When The Checks Stop Coming In: Donnie Simpson and His Light Eyes Are Out of a Job

- By Bossip Staff Categories: Blast From the Past, News, When The Checks Stop Coming In

Donnie Simpson was recently fired from his Washington Radio Show because of low numbers and lack of appeal to a younger audience.  More info under the hood.

Simpson’s departure follows months of declining ratings for his show and internal friction between Simpson and WPGC’s management. The station has sought to boost Simpson’s ratings and attract younger listeners by updating his playlist and playing hit songs more often. Simpson and his producer-son, Donnie Jr., have maintained that the station was meddling, compromising his long-running program and alienating loyal listeners.

CBS had wanted to ease Simpson out with a celebratory retirement party in mid-March, but Simpson declined, according to people familiar with the negotiations between him and the station. Late last week he began telling listeners on the air that his departure was imminent but didn’t specify when he’d be leaving.

Lucky for Donnie his checks will be coming in until his contract runs out…even though he won’t be on the air.  On a sidenote remember when Donnie used to hold BET down:

    I must admit I havent been listening to him since Huggie Low Down left but damn. And Im not feeling Angie somebody they hired.

    RUSS PARR ALL DAY!!

  • Des

    @Nique

    Yeah I know right HUGGIE was on with J ‘nem and I still have no clue what happen with that situation

  • PRPPLE, just PRPPLE

    @DES
    I don’t think his showing is boring becuz Donnie doesn’t do what all the other stations are doing I will sad to see him leave but oddly this morning I was listening 95.5 and i was WTF is Donnie playing LOL

  • thatlady

    Whoa….this is very surprisely. I listen hear and there…but didn’t hear him leaving supposely to getting fired.

  • http:chokolatemilk.blogspot.com Choco

    @PRPPLE
    I would have to agree Russ Parr’s show has taken a dive as well they be on to much clown time in the AM and all that hard laughter make me switch my station to 95.5

  • Des

    Well I will say I don’t mess with Russ ignorant butt either..Alfredas is the only one with a little sense on that show…

    @Choco Donnie is boring at times, it doesn’t matter if he isn’t doing what the other stations are doing dude can be boring at times..

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHSHADDAAAP!!!!

    When Donnie left BET, he took the c.l.a.s.s. with him.

  • Des

    @AHHHHHHHHHHHHSHADDAAAP!!!!

    Now I will second that, but for real Donnie living over in Potomac, MD, he good, dude is rich and he should be in front of the TV not behind the radio…He has more personality than Radio

    @choco I do get that he is for an older crowd, I’m older, so if they fired him cause he wasn’t appealing to the younger crowd then what was the point of hiring Tiger? Makes no sense right?

  • KeepNit2Real

    The real issue was Donnie was in the streets of DC with REAL stories! Not this syndicated bullsheez all the new radio dj’s are on these days.

    The corporation wanted him to change his format up and that’s not what made Donnie Donnie.

    you have sellouts like Steve Harvey, big country bumpkin asz…tryna tell everyone how to live their lives on radio when his is messed up…and they booted Tom Joyner for him for syndication..which means big money for Steve…so obviously the relationship is amicable…

    Donnie. No sellout there. And THAT’S why he didn’t want a retirement shindig. Who would when management won’t let you go out the way you came in?

    Get yours Donnie….DC still loves you bro!

  • thatlady

    well i guess no more
    IIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. Donnie had the Tiger in him! ahahahahahaaaaa

    @Des
    I know he can be boring but dayum Im just so used to him being around so I excuse it : ) I will miss hearing his voice grew up on him : (

  • Horse.Head.Nebula

    wow .. i’m surprised .. He’ll get another gig. TV One? Perhaps??

  • frankbarbie

    i saw this coming…donnie’s morning show is a little dry (he’s trying but still). i’m a russ parr in the morning kinda girl…however there is someone who’s laughter is like nails on the chalk board, i think its the intern chick that does the gramma voice. its like a pinching cackle.

    once that happens i turn to rickey smiley:)

  • B3 Fearless

    I’m not surprised I figured it was only a matter of time when they brought in the new female and the guy who both are younger than Donnie. I also noticed how they tried to switch the music up. I don’t their ratings are going to get any higher with his departure. They’ll just lose Donnie’s loyal fans. DC already has a 93.9 and it just seems like 95.5 is trying to go in that direction.

  • aleximaq

    Yep….saw this on the news yesterday morning and heard him talking about it….He did mention his ratings were down but that is because Chris Paul left the show and they replaced him with some children….Angie Corley is NOT a good DJ and that guy Bootsie is not funny….I don’t even know who the other person is….

  • Nique

    The worst is the Kane show on 99.5

    I used to just listen for the ridiculous stories and war of the roses but Kane is an a$$. The way he talks to his ppl is sad.

  • Des

    @KeepNit2Real

    You are right in some ways I was sad when they took Tom off for Steve big lip butt

  • Chelly

    I love Donnie Simpson and I refuse to listen to 95.5 in the morning since they wanna get rid of him. Donnie had taste and loved real music, now all they gonna play is bullshi*t by these non talented so called artists. SMH. Love ya DS!

    @Des
    It does make sense to me cuz Tigga is on in the pm and Donnie does the am if Tigga pm shows are bringing in more ratings he may just do the AM and PM or use the other ppls that dj in the pm…the older crowd can swicth to 102.7 or 96.3 I think it was Tigga success to ushered him out the door

  • ginobli

    honestly im going to miss donnie though its nothing wrong with his show and who wants to hear some damn waka flacka flame at 7 am not me to hell with some of these station they dont play anything positive on the radio any way

  • Nique

    @aleximaq

    LOL @ Bootsie Vegas thinking he’s funny. He can beat a joke to DEATH!

  • lani3000

    DC Loves and will always love Donnie Simpson!

    I also stopped listening to Donnie Simpson after Huggy Lowdown left — I used to laugh out loud when Huggy named his “Bama of the week, week, week. . .”

    I tried listening to Steve Harvey on 96.3, but he just doesn’t grab me. The same for Russ Parr (and I cannot stand most of today’s music, so that’s a turn-off).

    So, most morning, I listen to NPR.
