What is considered handsome (facial features, etc) obviously changes depending on your culture or time period!
Now the counterpart to the tall/dark man is the opposite…small/light (blondes have more fun??). So men, according to this standard, are supposed to be attracted to thin, young light-skinned/(or blonde if you’re white–the lightest of the light! haha) women. Yung Berg is young and has a lot to learn. Prior to him making his comments I never bought his CD and probably never would’ve anyway. But I feel the need to post an HONEST oppiion on the matter. I am black women with a very beatiful brown complexion. I’m often asked if I model. I have to be honest and say that I never was into the whole complexion thing. Because I have relatives that are prettier than me who are darker and lighter than me. So pretty is pretty. I know that all to well. I have dated guys who only preferred dark girls and who only preferred light girls BUT were still drawn to me. I know that all all light women DON’T have that “I’m better than you complex” about them. But in my own personal experiences. 9 times out of 10 every time I’m in the presence of a lighter female she makes it known that she is uncomfortable with my presence. Without me saying anything. My confidence seems to rub them the wrong way. They always go out of their way to say that they feel lighter is more preferred but I constantly catch them looking at me, sizing me up, and basically secretly admiring me. Im not trying to sound conceited Im just being honest. Maybe a lot of(NOT ALL) lighter women feel this way because society puts unrealistic pressure on them to think that they have to look the best in the room just based off of their complexion. The same way that society puts unrealistic pressure on darker females to believe that they are less pretty just based off of their complexion. Its pure BULL.
For the record this whole light/ dark thing is a result of slavery. Unfortunately it remains for SOME black people. When I was younger I actually preferred dark men, then I was on light men, then brown men. I’ve also dated white,Asian and Spanish men. As a woman I’ve learned that people are people. I agree that my statement about what we find attractive is based on social conditioning was a little…loaded, but that doesn’t make it wrong.
I have a big problem with the word, “universal” as in–”universally deemed attractive” because ultimately-historically, the word universal has been used to NORMALIZE eurocentric standards of beauty and living. There is no such thing as a universal standard of beauty. Sure, now dark women across the world (Africa, Asia, etc.) are bleaching their skin, straightening and bleaching their hair and popping in light colored contacts to conform to some idea of beauty—but that is a recent concept of beauty that came with COLONIZATION, SLAVERY and the spread of WHITE SUPREMACY!!!! We have all been told at some point in our lives, directly or indirectly that white is the most beautiful (the color white signifies purity in the West…women wear white dresses on their wedding day, the day they are supposed to be the most beautiful, and white people despite not actually being “white” colored call themselves white which indirectly aligns them with all of these qualities…it goes that deep. And then black…the symbol of dirt, the devil according to the West…anyways, I digress). This cannot be ignored.

That’s not to say EVERYONE finds light skinned people, or whatever attractive just because we have been socially conditioned to believe that. We make our own choices…but even those choices are based on our immediate environment. If you have tall men in your family who have certain features, and these men have been good to you, you will most likely find men with similar looking features to be attractive. If you are a man and were raised by thick, dark skinned women who were confident and treated you well–you will most likely find thick, dark, confident women attractive. BECAUSE OF THE ENVIRONMENT YOU WERE RAISED IN! But if you were raised by short Asian people you will probably find short Asian people to be the most attractive. Generally, that’s how it works. Keep in mind, I say GENERALLY. CLEARLY THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS.

I agree with you 100%. This goes very deep. I was recently horrified that my 4 year old nephew refuses to say or be proud of the fact that he is brown. He threw a fit one day because we were looking at pictures and his mom called him her chocolate baby. He said I’m not a chocolate boy. He said I want to be a white boy. He told my mom and dad they should not be together because black boys don’t belong with white girls (my mom is light not white). None of these things have been said to him by any member of our family or at his school but these or just things that he must have picked up from the Disney channel and other cartoon and super hero outlets that he is in to. One day my 5 year old came home and said mom I wish I was your color. My heart sank to my stomach. I’m light completed and my daughter is brown skinned. All I could think was where did this come from, so I asked her, she shrugged her shoulder and said “she don’t know, I don’t like my color I want to be yours”. I wanted to cry because it hurt me to hear the hate she had from being a dark skin child. I since then did damage control. I often tell her how beautiful her skin tone is, and how pretty she is etc. I made sure I put extra inferences on her skin tone. I Must have did to much of a good job because now being 11 she talks about how beautiful her skin tone is etc, which make he heart smile because not only does she say it she now knows it true. I was talking to an older cat today, and we were talking about the journey of black people. Some of the things he said was so profound, while other things he went “left field” on me. What has happened in the black race that has made us take thousands of steps backwards? Was it the deaths of our prominent leaders, or the lack of a successor? Was it the crack in the 80’s or the over abundance of children having children? Many people believe that we have “arrived” as a people because we can buy material things or a lot of us are in the entertainment biz. The only place some of us have arrived is back to slavery. We might as well be somewhere picking cotton, because some of us have become slaves to the dollar bill. The whole “get money” idealism is dead, how about keep money, invest money? Get rich or die trying? And when you do get rich and die you can’t take those riches with you. Yeah its easier to obtain riches, but where is the mindset to obtain wealth? I work in a bank and it is sad to see a grown man in his 30’s not being able to subtract $50 from $850. What is our excuse now? We are flooded with resource, its so unbelievable. We have no excuse and I refuse to believe that. Now in the days before some of us there were no resources for us to be educated. Again what is our excuse? Our people were being beat up, and hosed down like animals because they wanted to be educated. Their mentality was get educated or die trying, but now you have fools willing to die for money? WHAT? I dont even need to bring “the man” (don’t know who he is, nor have i ever seen him before) into this post because this is about us and our lack of responsibility for ourselves and our actions.

Okay, I respect that, I really do.
And though I will not appologize like Berg, I would say that my initial comments were harsh I meant to say that quite a good number of black women are false and when they are alone it’s a totally different woman staring back at them if they were to take off all that wasn’t theirs and alot of black men share the same sentiment.

Why are people so offended? First of all, most comments people make on here are truly unflattering and sometimes, down right, derogatory. Yall can sit on here and call females tramps, others suspect, but yall just laugh at that. The minute someone say something about dark skin, OMG, yall get all sensitive. To me, you guys are a bunch of hypocrites.
Me personally, I wouldn’t have apologized. If a offensive remark would have been made towards a light skinned woman, I seriously doubt, you all would have reacted in the same manner. And it’s not just on here, I hear ugly comments made about light skinned sistahs, in everyday life, but once again, people are cool with that.
I myself, prefer to date light skinned or mixed. Always have, always will. Doesn’t mean I dislike dark skinned, but wake up people, everybody has preferences, even if they sometimes, make dumb statements, when referring to the opposite of what they like.
