The Illinois senator is depicted in traditional Muslim garb in the Barry Blitt illustration set in the Oval Office. His wife, Michelle, is in fatigues, sporting an Angela Davis-style sky-high Afro, an AK-47 slung over her shoulder.
“The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.
New Yorker editor David Remnick seemed shocked by the backlash. “Our cover … combines a number of fantastical images about the Obamas and shows them for the obvious distortions they are,” he said in a statement. “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Sen. Obama’s right-wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.
Obama brushed off the brouhaha. “I have no response to that,” he told reporters when asked about the cover, but his supporters are infuriated.
We all know how well versed our man Barack is at brushing off the bullshyte. You can always guarantee that he will show class and strength in the face of this kind of plain foolishness. Barack Obama ‘08 – YES WE CAN!!!

The artwork is great. I’m not worried about this kind of stuff. The more the racists push, the more right thinking Americans (white and Black) will shake their head and vote Obama on election day. The young people especially are sick of this crap. Sick of their father’s and mother’s hypocrisy. In countries where children are bi- and trilingual, it is known that they do better in science and math- the two areas that are very lacking amongst ALL American children. SO, yes. I am all for anything that is positive, why aren’t you?

if more and more Hispanics are coming to the U.S. why not be prepared to communicate with them? I think that Hispanics should not refrain from learning English, as well. I think he’s trying to prepare us for the future of America. I do think other languages such as, French, Swahili, Asian languages should be introduced along with Spanish.
In Philadelphia, there is a fast food place called Gino’s-cheesesteaks, at any rate, he has a sign on his window- “no english, no service”- not too long ago the same signs were put up on water fountains refraining “coloreds” from drinking “white only water”- the humanity… I do not support supremacists in their efforts of the demise of Hispanics(namely Mexicans) in America.

How much money do you think that you will make off this cover if it causes pandemonium and a backlash that causes Senator Obama to lose because people believe he is a terrorist? If anyone can get ahold of the article that goes with the story, please post it. I was listening to NPR at lunch, and the author of the story was being interviewed. It sounds like a good article giving an accurate background of the Obama family, so I at least want to read it.

The irony was lost because the New Yorker did NOT caption the cartoon with THE POLITICS OF FEAR written on the COVER. Without this disclaimer, the image itself takes on an entirely different meaning. Like someone said earlier, relatively few people r likely to read through 18 pages of the magazine 2 get the point.

(1) I am not one to shy away from provocative commentary & imagery –> we need it
(2) I am a politics, philosopy and economics major & law school grad –> so no suprise that I habitually read the Economist and at times read the New Yorker and YES political cartoonists are CRAZY –> they push the envelope often
(3) some people do not pick up on satire – if too subtle then no one may pick up on it (in which case it fails as satire if we do not onlymeasure by the intent of the satirist but the effect on the reader/viewer)
WITH those two things said I think at the heart of the issue are the following:
A) if you believe that liberal whites & conservative whites = racists w/ the only difference being that the the former is a closet rascist THEN you do not think this is satire BUT think that the label “satire” is a cover
B) If you believe the New Yorker is a liberal mag that carries quality reporting and essays & you do NOT believe liberal white basically = rascists THEN you probably think either:
1) the cover is good satire
2) the cover is a failed attempt at satire -”Satire that is indistinguishable from what it purports to satirize fails as satire”
C) If you believe any or all of the following: Barack is not patriotic, is a (radical) muslim, and Michelle is an angry, black power militant racist THEN you probably WILL NOT pick up on the satire OR you WILL NOT GIVE A DAMN about the satire (BUT you get an image that matches your
thoughts)
SO for me –> I think yeah this is satire:
1) truth: some people believe the images depicted on the cover (hahahaha can you believe people still think he is muslim – WHY – where is the evidence of this – what you just have a hunch – and do not get me started on the fact that there NEEDS to be something done about this damn autmoatic *****ociation of islam and terrorism)

@ROADRUNNER- I agree that it failed but I must admit that I cannot conceive that and intelligent group of reporters and editors at The New Yorker could not see that this would fail before it was published. The biggest obstacle that Obama will have to overcome in this election is the bigots who will not let go of the stereotypes about him. They WANT to believe he is a Muslim and his wife is a fist pumping America hating radical, so when you just throw a photo like this out there all those people will see is a well-established publication like The New Yorker co-signing with the ignorance they believe to be true.

I’m also a former subscriber to the New Yorker, and I appreciate political satire as much as the next person, but this cover is part of a disturbing trend that has emerged during this campaign, examples of which has already been mentioned (did anyone mention the recent Daily Kos cartoon that depicted Michelle Obama tied up and being tortured by the Klan?). These “satirical” renderings echo a dangerous racial undercurrent that appears to be worsening as the campaign progresses.

I do believe that if you are familar with the New Yorker you know it is satire BUT what people who know it is satire and still think it failed or may have demonstarted lack of foresight can criticize is the impact of the cover:
- I do not think satire is meaningful if the satirist alone “gets it” (BUT it is still satire b/c I do not think any definition of satire has a requirement that it be recognized as such by readers) OR if the people holding the beliefs that the satirist is mocking does not get that they are being mocked (I think there is some danger of that here)
An attempt to make the satire less evident/a little more subtle and boom you may no longer be able to distinguish between the satire and the beliefs that were the focus of the satire (This is always the case w/ satire so nothing new here)

Girl, I’m having a hellacious Monday. I haven’t had time to read the article yet, but I definitely will. I understand the satirical intent of the cover, but I believe emotions are running very high during this campaign, and there is a definite racial undertone to certain depictions of Obama that don’t sit well with a lot of folks. But I’m not as disturbed by this cover as I was the Daily Kos cartoon of Michelle being held captive by the Klan. Did you see that? It appeared a few months ago. Also, as a black woman, I’m naturally sensitive to public depictions of us, and I can’t help but feel that there are deliberate attempts to vilify Michelle as an angry, militant stereotype, and I believe the same is being done to Barack.

John McCain saught the endorsement of a man who had distorted views of Christianity and people who didn’t worship in the same denomination he did.
I don’t agree with Barack Obama leaving Trinity, but I was able to find out, through news sources and letters that were published online, several elders at Trinity, as well as everyday congregation members, were receiving threats and were getting sick of cameras being outside their church. They asked Obama to leave. If I were him, I wouldn’t have because A) Jeremiah Wright had already stepped down and B) We live in a country with freedom of religion.
His leaving Trinity didn’t help how Americans viewed him. right after it happened, his poll numbers didn’t shift any more/less than they did in other weeks leading up to now.

-Not exactly true. If you commit acts that are haram and of you say that you don’t believe Allah is God and Mohammed is his messenger, you are kicked out of Islam for ALL muslims. And Jeremiah Wright didn’t do sermons like that every Sunday. I’ve grown up attending mostly Baptist and Catholic services, and have heard things much worse than that. Why isn’t anyone going after McCain’s church record (now that he’s going).
I’ve seen Jeremiah Wright preach when he comes to Dallas to support a church here, and I’ve seen videos from him attending conferences all over the nation. That man had clergy members of all races and denominations defending him, but of course, no one shows that on the news.
I don’t know everything, nor will I pretend to, but I think you should do more investigation into issues. And who knows, you could know something that I don’t know, but I can tell you this: The months after September 11th, I heard (in church) sermons about how America brought this on ourselves. And watching Christian TV, the same thing was said over and over as a way to call people to Jesus.
I just want people to stop getting it twisted about Reverend Wright. Excuse me if I get a little heated about this, but religion is my hot button. I’m thankful we live in a country where a black Baptist child could attend the best white prep (and mostly Catholic) schools that her black mother could afford, and no one could turn us away.

I’m one of those people who can’t STAND IT when people go off the deep end on religion. Jeremiah Wright started cutting up after he “Retired” from Trinity, but he wasn’t making crazy statements like Hagee.
And it’s sad, because I’ve seen preachers of all races (especially at revivals) make similar comments to Hagees, and the older church members will sit there and nod and shout. Maybe it’s a Southern thing, I don’t know.

As we’ve seen in recent years with Katrina, earthquakes, forest fires and midwest flooding, disaster strikes. Even hard-working, so called “Middle Cl*****” (which really doesn’t exist anymore) American would be hard pressed to start over with NO gov’t *****istance. I can understand why many Americans are having financial trouble and may be in need of social services. If that costs me a few more tax dollars, I am MORE than ok with that. While you are on your pious horse, you could be one company downsizing away from needing food stamps.
You are so big on education, right? Well, Obama is talking about making higher education more affordable. I am currently a graduate student. I am 2 years away from my PhD. I have been FORTUNATE to avoid astronomical debt/student loans, but believe me, many of my cl*****mates are not so lucky. If Obama will help lower the interest on student loans, I am all for it. I am not terribly opposed to vouchers as a SHORT TERM fix. But shuffling children to suburban private schools will not change the fact that public schools need a major overhaul. Again, if I have to pay higher taxes for a better America, so be it.

Hey Sydney, what’s up girl? You responded to a post I made last week about the anti-black woman diatribe, but you were gone before I could respond. You were on point, as usual.
Anyway, there seems to be a lot of anti-Obama sentiment. Some people are breathing out such anger of Obama and Michelle like a dragon, but the thing is, it’s really pointless to argue with them b/c they will not change nor see the light even if the facts smacked them clean in their faces. To me the bottom line is, if you’re a person who doesn’t want to vote for Obama, so be it, but don’t criticize others for their choice to vote for him, which I will be doing in November!
Oh, I forgot to add that the richest 1% of Americans would face the majority of the tax burden under Obama’s plan. Conservatives are so quick to say that is unfair. Whatever. Unfair is when 1% of the population makes more than the combined incomes of the other 99%. One of the great things about a capitalist society is that you can acquire wealth, but one shouldn’t ***** and moan about giving back to the same country that afforded them the opportunity.
Unfair is working a job that BARELY covers the gas to get there and back. Then having to work a second job to provide food. Then not being able to afford the health insurance plan. Then having to send your children to subpar public schools. Then if you can find the time to pursue a degree, graduating in a mountain of debt… all because some guy/girl posting as “me” on Bossip doesn’t want the richest 1% to pay higher taxes. Lovely.

Gas prices are INTRINSICALLY related to who is president because certain presidents are pro big business and veto things like “windfall profits” taxes while others appoint judges that fine Exxon Mobil for the Exxon Valdez disaster which killed millions of animals and poisoned the waterways and killed the fishing industry for millions of miles. the price of oil right now is related to speculators driving up futures options, backlash against Bush for acting like he wants to goto war with Iran and Hugo Chavez and for being a *****head in general. The rest of the world isn’t feeling that whole “World’s Only Superpower” bull***** and google how many nations have formed treaties and trade pacts for oil against US interests. Under Bush.

The statement Michelle made stated that this is the first time she is REALLY proud of her country, with the word really being the most important word there.

I for one am all for bilingual education. However, I believe that more emphases should be placed in teaching are American youths, a more grammatically correct English. Before they are forcefully compelled upon, to learn a foreign language.
It is clear, that many of our urban city high school students, express them selves at sub-level verbalization. A great deal of high school seniors, speak as though they are in seventh grade. Again I’m all for bilingual education, but I believe it should be taught as an elective, for students that have already proven their mastery, of the English language. ARTOFWAR.
