They didn’t explain why she flipped them off (???) but either way, that is freedom of speech. It is sad that insecure little boys with badges try to punish people for not liking them. I think it’s vague-***** charges like “disorderly conduct” that allows police to abuse authority. My ex got into a police officer’s ***** outside a club because the officer bumped into me (hard) and tried to keep going like he didn’t see me. So my ex gave em the business (verbally- and with limited swear words). The officer then arrested him for “disorderly conduct”. The charges were eventually dropped, but it was still a night of hell all because some officer thinks his badge gives him free reign to act an ***** with everybody. This young lady should not be charged with *****ault if witnesses say the officer touched her first. Plain and simple.

This is an outrage! I don’t understand why or how law enforcement can get away with such atrocities….for example, here in Ohio, just a few short months ago, a young man was shot in the back, twice, by the police. They said he was running away from them and appeared to have had a gun in his hand so they shot him. How is it that the police can feel so threatened in such non-threatening situations? Don’t get me wrong….I can only imagine what they must see from day to day – its got to be horrible some of what they have to witness…but, for those who feel as though they’ve run the full gammit of what they can tolerate on the streets, they should then be put of desk duty, and call it a day. Granted, the young lady should not have shown such blatent disrespect for the officers by flipping them off, but by no stretch of the imagination does that warrant the beat-down she got in return…I hope she’s in a position to summon attorneys who will work on her behalf to seek justice for this.

It was in Long Beach. Those cops went too far. They pulled over an entire bus just to confront the woman and slamming her face to the ground was just wrong so I hope she does sue for that.

On the flip side though this is what irritates me about some black people particularly her:

Why you on a city bus flipping off police officers? I guess she figured I’m on the bus they can’t do anything and she found that to be funny until they actually pulled the bus over.

When are people gonna learn how to avoid things. When he asked her was there a problem she should’ve said no. Why try to get all big and bad and say “Well I do have a problem now”

Also just because you are gay and you wanna be a dude don’t mean you are sweety so yes you were gonna get ur behind beat by a man if you were trying to fight him. At that point if you are fighting an officer then you automatically get charged with *****ault which is why the other officer jumped in for the arrest.

Common sense people. Use it.

I’m not saying that all cops are evil because my brother is a cop, but MOST just join the force because they’re on this power trip and they know once they get that badge and gun, they can pretty much do whatever they want and get away with it. Its basically your word against theirs and they always win. I see no point in even arguing with them anymore because most of the time my mouth just gets me in bigger trouble or gets me an even bigger ticket. F*ck it, I just avoid them at all costs. Has anyone seen “Caught on Camera” on MSNBC? They have many cases of police abusing their authority being video taped by their own cruisers. The police in South Carolina are so out of order that they are being investigated by the FEDS. St. Louis has a citizen action committee that basically police the police due to many cases of abuse of power by the cops. I advise every community to form one. The police are suppposed to answer to the people and its up to us to make sure that they do.

1. Most police officers barely have their GED let alone a college degree.

2. Police officers, military officials and others working in the armed services barely know how 2 shoot their guns let alone protect the people thay are soupposed to be serving. Ya’ll know they only need 3 months (most of the times less) before they are given theor gun and badge. yea they have 2 take a written test but that is useless when one is actually thrown in a life threatening situation.

3. Anybody can become a police officer, including bigots and reformed power hungry jack*****es who seek revenge against anyone who reminds them of the times when they regularly got their ***** beat.

4. There is a reason why they have the poor guarding the poor. The same reason they had the slaves whipping other slaves. The same hispanic and black police who are struttin’ around beating ppl grew-up down the block and I can’t understand why they treat their own ppl like sh*t. There is no respect for the police because they do not respect the citizens who pay their salary. being in law enforcement i see these types of things everyday. we don’t see everything that transpired. We just see the cops pulling the girl off the bus. its hard to make a judgement when you don’t know the whole thing. you know the police were justified in pulling her off of that bus if showed any type of resistance. as a police officer you never know what people have on them or their motives and being on a crowded bus with the girl’s sister trying to fight you as well puts an added risk to it. could the cops just have ignored the girl flipping them off? yeah…but you have to save face, you can’t let everyone slide some of the time or people tend to get out of pocket really quickly.

She crossed that *****e to get closer and say ” I do have a problem now” Any human in their right minds would swing on that girl. She was testing the officer more than once starting from her middle finger, to the invasion of his personal *****e making him feel threatened. And yes those officers can pull over a bus for that. They cannot arrest her for it, but they can approach her about it. Truck drivers radio bus drivers all the time when kids throw things out the windows, spit, or put up vulgar signs. There are definitely officers out there that look for trouble and I’ve seen it first hand, but also there are ones that people like to provoke because they say “I got a right to do this and you can’t do nothing to me”

I hope the officers get in trouble for the smashing of her face on the ground and stuff, but also she needs to get in trouble for what she did also. Both parties took things too far. Had those officers called her a dyke as “freedom of speech” every gay organization black and white would’ve been going after them. Some people need to grow up and learn the difference in ignorance.

The tried to arrest her. They didn’t beat her down…the physically man handled her *****. The didn’t use a knight stick…they didn’t use pepper spray. First of all I watched the tape more than once and she was not resisting arrest *****hole. The cop got in her face first and tried to scream on her asking her if she had a problem, which violates her personal *****e which she has a right to. Second of all her response was I do now since you pulled this bus over and just pointed me out and got all up in my face which again she has a right to especially since the cop was violating her personal *****e for some petty *****. Third after she made that comment the cop tackled her to the ground like she was a football player and then got his boy in on it which means they *****aulted her first *****heads. Last but definately not least she was handcuffed before she was taken off the bus so slamming her face onto the ground with enough force to break four bones in it is WRONG period no matter how you slice it. I can’t believe that in 2008 there are still ignorant ***** people such as yourselves and whats sad is that some of you are black. I feel the punishment should always fit the crime and someone spitting on your pops Ldy Arc definately deserves an ***** whopping but the finger is so insignificant that anyone willing to whip someones’s ***** over it needs to spend every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on a couch for an hour at a time just letting it all out because there are definately some deep seeded issues that you have to deal with.

I think that you missed the point. No one is attempting to justify the woman’s actions. If she was resisting arrest then she deserved to be arrested for the offense. The issue at hand is the magnitude of the officers’ response. Was it necessary to break 4 bones in the woman’s face in the midst of the arrest? Consider the fact that the hardest bone in the body is found in the face! Sorry, but the manner in which they conducted themselves is blatant excessive force. Do two grown a$$ men need to engage in that type of violent exchange with ONE woman in order to arrest her? I think not.

Therein lies the problem!!! It is common knowledge that resisting arrest is an umbrella term that cops frequently use to justify THEIR use of said force. The way that the law is written, one can technically “resist arrest” verbally and not lay a hand on an officer in the process of the arrest. Does that justify what we have seen here? NO!!!! Sorry, but NO ONE deserves to be *****ulted like that for an offense that does not cause bodily harm to an officer. THAT is the point.

I feel that this was the motivation behind what occurred here. The police thought that she was brazen and displayed a lot of “nerve” by flipping them off, and that is why they created a scene and pulled over the entire bus to confront her. You just brought that point up before I got the chance as far as psycological testing.

I wonder where in the manual does it require an officer to illegally imprison someone, the stopping of the bus without cause, whenever they feel “disrespected.”

A full investigation needs to be completed. If they were brazen enough to do this in full view of witness they probably feel the support of their department.

From my understanding her sister of herself flipped off the cop from the bus window, so they were agitating the police. I know how frustrating it can be to ride the bus, bus you shouldn’t take your frustration out on other people. It’s all about discipline and respect for others. I was pulled over by the police in March for a warrant that I had cleared a month prior. I was very angry and upset, but I kept my cool because they were the law, they were men and they had guns. They took to me jail and although I very, very upset I made calm small talk with the cop. They found out that they “had made a mistake” upon my entering jail and they let me go within 20 minutes. I filed a complaint and put the incident behind me. The police were rough with her, but she should have keep her cool and just apologize for the gesture…then she might have avoided being beat down and jailed. I don’t know if she will get compensation for this, but it’s pretty clear that her attitude needs to change.

BTW, isn’t it cool to be gay in Cali…I guess if you look like a woman then it’s cool

You forgot to mention that this is PART of the process in the United States for a federal law. Has to be federal since you stated the president signed on it.

An important note is that you didn’t mention that in the United States any “proposed law” must conform to the Constitution which is interpeted by the Supreme Court.

How did this blog turn into a race issue anyway? The cops were wrong plain and simple. SHE was wrong plain and simple. Two wrongs deserve consequences, but a broken face isnt one of them.

I’ve never pulled the race card in my 29 yrs on earth. In fact my friend and I first experienced racism in college, (she is mexican, I am black) were stranded in a white neighborhood about 9 years ago going to get apps for a college and we were trying to wave down cabs to get back to the inner city and not ONE stopped for us. Being the naive ppl we were, thinking America had come a long way from racism, didnt understand why we were not picked up until after 6 DAMN HOURS of walking trying to find a train or bus to go in our direction. Once we did, we started talking amongst ourselves of the disbelief of the situation. We’d only heard of that happening in NY. Never ONCE did we call anyone a cracker or honky…its so childish.

Long story short, these are the experiences that make people view things the way they do. I love all races even though that happened, but all black ppl are not ghetto baby mamas, or thugs, or have warrants our for them.

The world is a stereotype and the only way to defray it, is to teach OUR children to love everyone. It has to start somewhere.

it really depends on what really happened on the day of the incident!!! i am a black guy and i have NEVER been abused by a cop or gone to jail in my whole like and i am above 22yrs old!!! as a matter of fact when i get pulled over they even let me go with a big smile on their face both white and black cause of they way i address them!!! i do not believe in maltreating women, but when u have to take it to that level then u have no choice!!! she must have resisted or said something really bad for them to that!!1 i have seen that many times in DC and trust me the women desereved it because of the way they approached a cop!!! hope this helps tho

This incident that we were blogging about is BS, simple as that. The woman flipped an officer off, but that doesn’t justify stopping the bus and confronting the woman. The Police are trained in situations much worse than this. Imagine if some brothas such as myself would have been around to see this, it could have escalated into a m*****ive ***** whiping and the score would have been Streets 1 Cops-0

The point is the whole incident was avoidable. She shouldn’t have gave them the finger but damn it’s plenty of us out here that feel the same way she did because we get mistreated on a regular.

So before you insult one of us, think first and think carefully. It’s easier to spread luv than hate

Anyone can “resist arrest” verbally. Resisting arrest can mean a lot of things, and that is why the law is so ambiguous. Even so, resisting arrest does not predicate the need for unnecessary violence and this is a clear case of brutality IMO. It was two against one! Since when is that “fair?” SMH

Sweetie I hate to break it to you but never in my life has any white person done anything to oppress me or even be racist towards me, and this is coming from a person who was born and raised in NYC. I was driving my uncle’s BMW and the cop pulled me over. When I asked him WHY he stated that the tag light was out. Now you know me so NO, I was exactly friendly cause I knew that he was full of $hit. I cranked up the car, get out, and what do you know? The tag light is FINE. He then had the nerve to ask me if he could search my car. WTF? He had to let me go, so there were no handcuffs, but it was unsettling to say the LEAST.

If you are from NYC then you remember the study that was done not to long ago (maybe 2 yrs?). Five thousand resumes were sent out to fortune 500 companies. Half with European names (William, Mary, etc.) and half with Black names (Ebony, Malik, etc.). The Black resumes were given equal or better credentials than the White ones but only about 10% of the Black names received replies (even to say they were not interested) while close to 60% of the White ones were given (not replies)interview dates. Oppression is not dead in this country. It is just hidden better….instead of the backwoods of Mississippi it is in the board rooms of corporate America. Keep your third eye open….please. If you don’t see the sh*t in front of you then you are doomed to step in it.

Long Beach police has a history of being violent, not just toward gay women, but anybody who is different (not white). My uncle is a civil attorney in LA county and he has handled numerous cases against LBPD for brutality and excessive use of force.

I lived in Long Beach and went to CSULB. As a Black women, I never personally dealt with the LBPD but my roommate (of mixed race) did. He got beat down to the ground at my birthday party because he refused to answer the cops questions (we were too loud at our apt). We lived in a bad part of LB so I guess they felt like they could treat him that way.

I hope they take their *****es to court. If they need a good civil attorney, check out Vincent DeSimone from Venice, Ca.

Stand up for this *****. It’s unacceptable.

You are right: the cop saw me driving around in a 90,000 car and felt the need to “investigate” the source. You should have seen his face when I told him that my uncle was the ADA!

And yes, I do feel what you are saying. Bottom line is that I think that what happened in LB was the ultimate testament of hypocrisy. Some police officers deem themselves worthy of so much respect, but they have no qualms about desrespecting someone else beause they think that they can get away with it. I am not a judge by profession but to me, it’s as plain as day that they took it too far. The officer jumped her first, and she was still in the process of talking. From what I could see, he was not in any danger of bodily harm. That’s when you use “excessive force.”

I have just seen the box office hit movie, Han*****, with my two teenage sons and their 12 year old cousin. As usual, after seeing a movie with the kids, we engaged in debates about the representations and subtle messages in the movie. I asked the young men if they liked the film and they all agreed that it was a great film. I asked them what they liked about it and they said that Will Smith was the greatest superhero ever. Then they asked me if I liked the movie and I said no that I did not. Why not? They all asked in unison.

I asked the children to compare Will Smith’s character with other super heroes played by white actors. They said that all super heroes have their nemeses because people are suspicious of those who have superhuman powers. Many people dislike Superman and Batman and Spiderman especially when they are slow to beat the bad guys or when the bad guys impersonate them and make it look like the bad things were being done by the superheroes. Sometimes people dislike the superhero because they envy the superpower or because they fear that he may use the same power to defeat them if they did anything naughty by themselves. So they were not surprised that people were complaining about John Han***** in the movie, it comes with being a superhero.

I asked the young men if they knew of any superhero who was unemployed, or an alcoholic, or who slept rough on the streets, or used foul language, or tried to pinch the bum of women on the streets or called them *****es, or bullied children who were bullies, or had no girlfriend or family or went to prison just to learn how to say ‘good job’, or chased another man’s wife?

I told them that I suspected that Hollywood used these stereotypes to send the wrong messages to young black men and help to continue leading them astray. Some young black men may see the movie and believe that abusing large bottles of whiskey might give them superpowers. These are common stereotypes of the black man: unemployed, drunk addict, homeless, no family responsibility, cursing, ex-convict, childish, ignorant of his true identity and doing more harm than good.

Moreover, while he slept rough, it was a white boy who kicked him to wake him up by the side of the street to tell him that there were bad guys that he needed to fight and when he could not be bothered, the boy called him an *****hole, an insult that almost everyone called him for his trouble of saving the world from dangerous criminals who were represented predominantly as foreigners or as black people while the criminal bosses were white men.

The young black men who saw the movie with me protested that Han***** gave up drinking in the movie. Yes, I agreed, but guess who made him give up drinking for a while? It was a white man who did so as if he had no mind of his own. Moreover, Han***** did not even know who he was, it was a white woman who defined him for himself the way white people like to be the ones defining black people’s identity. I Asked them if they have ever seen a superhero played by a white man who did not know who he was until a black woman revealed the true identity.

Why was Han***** persuaded to accept a prison term as the only way to win respect when it is easier to improve the image of anyone by sending him to the university? In the prison where black men were over-represented, Han***** had to prove his superpower status by pushing a man’s head up the ***** of another man (a metaphor for male rape in prison), by dumbly saying ‘p*****’ in the group therapy sessions, and by magically scoring baskets from incredible distance as if that was all black men could do in a world dominated by ideas of white supremacy.

Why was Han***** not given his own family or girlfriend in the movie instead of setting him up to appear as if he was after the white woman who was married to the white man who pretended to be his boss and who told him how to dress for work? He later claimed that the white woman kissed him after he had tucked her husband into bed as if he was the nanny or ‘manny’ but that was no kiss, it was a beating that he got from the white woman who simply told him that they were different because she was stronger, blah blah blah.

Finally, Han***** was persuaded to go to a different planet to avoid tempting the white woman who claimed to be his mystical wife as if getting rid of the black man was the only way to resolve the sexual desire of white women for the forbidden fruits of black masculinity. By some kind of coincidence, John Han***** was the name of one of the Founding Fathers of America who was a slave trader, tax dodger and smuggler.

Films like Han***** are rated PG with the expectation that parents would guide their children in reading the codes in the movies but not all parents have the time, skill or interest to do so adequately. As a result, schools may have to fill this void by having seminars and workshops in which popular films will be closely read and *****ysed by a students’ film club to guide students against the negative messages encoded in films. So PG films should also be rated SG for School Guidance.

Recently, in Maryland, in Prince George’s County, a 19-year-old brother was strangled to death while being held in jail on charges of allegedly killing a police officer. The family has asked for a federal investigation, and the investigation is ongoing. Now this young man was no saint and had a rap sheet, but he was murdered.

These are the LONG BEACH police not beverly hills. If a police office cant handle someone flipping him off in long beach then he needs to find another field. I live in long beach and there is much more things to be worried about than an alleged middle finger being thrown at you. I am not saying flipping of the police officer is right but pulling over a city bus with people who were probaly commuting to work is over the top.

Then I checked the Long Beach newspaper’s site and found this. Seems like the Long Beach police have a few brutality cases on their hands:

LONG BEACH – Relatives of an 18-year-old burglary suspect found dead in the back of a police cruiser after fighting with residents and police gathered in front of the LBPD headquarters Tuesday, demanding answers and justice.

“*****ody’s telling me nothing, I don’t even know why my baby is dead,” said Lakeysha Wright-Lee, mother of Deshoun Keyon Torrence.

The protest occurred less than an hour after Wright-Lee met with several high ranking members of the Long Beach Police Department, including Gang and Violent Crimes Cmdr. Laura Farinella and lead Homicide Detective Russ Moss, who tried to give her as much information as they could about the case, Farinella said.

The incident above reportedly happened Saturday and involved the use of taser guns. The story quotes Naomi Rainey, president of the Long Beach chapter of the NAACP, but she’s currently in Cincinnati at the NAACP national conference:

The officers knew Torrence was not armed and was secure when they used their Taser guns on him, Harrison said.

“They Tasered him approximately five times even though his hands were cuffed behind his back,” Harrison said. “They Tasered him, and Tasered him, and Tasered him.”

Police denied those claims Tuesday, saying officers did not know residents had handcuffed Torrence and that the his arms were not behind his back when police arrived. Police also said Tuesday that he was shocked two times with a Taser gun, not five times.

Couple of things here the lady instigated the altercation. As some people on here say that officers are always harr*****ing black people in particular, if that is the case why give them a reason? The entire footage of the video is not there so I am not sure as to what truly transpired.

I have been pulled over by the police on a numerous occ*****ions (never got a ticket, YESSSSSSSSS!), and all the cops have been white. Do I think I was pulled over because I am black? Absolutely not. One incidence in particular while on my way to work speeding as usual, a cop p*****ed me by and everyone slowed down except me, I kept speeding and even drove p*****ed him doing 73 in a 55. He waved for me to pull over and all he said was “ma’am are you familiar with the speed limit? It’s 55 and I’m doing 70 myself and you are doing 73, slow down”. I deserved a ticket that day for sure, now if he did give me a ticket it would’ve been because I was breaking the law and not because I am black.

Officers are people too and like people you have good ones and bad ones, so eff the police? negative. I work at a bank in a high crime area in Atl, and whenever we call the police they are there for us. So I have a lot of respect for the ones that do their jobs according to the law.

Back to ya girl and her foolish antics, she might as well just opened the window and hollered out “eff the police”, because that is what she was pretty much saying. Had she not been the instigator the bus would not have been pulled over, etc.

ok sorry z i wasn’t here to argue with u earlier, i have a life outside of bossip..but yes, im NOPD and it comes to a point in our career where we cannot do ANYTHING right..honestly, it seems like NO MATTER WHAT, the police force is criticized…and even though it may not even be OUR police force that does something wrong, we are still faulted for it because the police force is always so generalized. this police did such and such, so all cops are pigs…Half the time, we are just doing our jobs in these situations. You know what they tell us in the academy? they say “if you are going to shoot someone, shoot them until they are no longer moving” thank god ive never had to shoot someone-yet..but when i do, i will make sure they are no longer moving…I’ve been through the academy, and in there, we have been peppersprayed, tased, beat, yelled at, the whole 9….we do good, heroic, law abiding things everyday…its a shame we don’t get recognized for the million good things we do a day, only the one bad thing.

Real Talk: People reap what they sow and what happen to the young lady came with the territory. I am not saying what happen to her was right becasue the police officer was out of pocket. But ol’ girl received a royal reality check. She could have flipped off some crazy n!99A, who had a chip on his shoulder and the outcome would have been the same, dude would have whooped her @$$. When you do things out of pocket, you will get a reaction. What did the officer do to the young lady to provoke her to give him a middle finger? She ain’t Tupac. She is a little girl, trying to be a dude. Everyone might be a winner here, though. The police officer got a chance to beat up a girl and will pay for it. My brother got pulled over the other day because he had his brights on. There was no one else on the road but him. The cops proceeded to scream and yell at him as if he was a criminal. That’s why alot of people are shooting at the police… because their scared. Alot of people feel kill or be killed! Only difference is a suvillian will get 25 to life for shooting a cop. If a cop shoots a suvillian they get a 3 days suspension. Look at the Sean Bell case. Those cops have moved on with their lives and Mrs.Bell and her children are without their husband/father. Its evident that we are living in the last days.

I don’t fear anyone or anything, but I don’t just go around flipping-off policemen–IT JUST AIN’T SMART! People, please find other ways to amuse yourselves. It is always sad to see these violent police/civilian confrontations. This young lady has caused both herself and her family a lot of unnecessary anguish by pulling that stunt.
