Hate him or love him, Kobe Bryant continues to make his imprint on the sport of basketball. Last night Bryant surpassed former Laker Jerry West as the highest scoring player in the history of the Los Angeles franchise. Pop the hood for details.

Needing 29 points to become the all-time leading scorer in Los Angeles Lakers history, Kobe Bryant scored on a breakaway dunk with 4:14 left in the third quarter Monday night to pass Jerry West.
West scored 25,192 points in his 14-year career, all of which was spent with the Lakers. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1980.
Bryant, in his 14th season, missed his first three shots in the game, but scored 23 points in the first half. He finished with 44 on 16-of-28 shooting, but the Lakers fell to the Grizzlies 95 -93. Bryant had the ball in his hands in the final seconds but passed to Ron Artest for a last-second 3-pointer. It clanged off the rim and Bryant left the floor shaking his head.
Bryant moved within a point of West’s mark on a dunk with 4:37 left in the third. He passed West 23 seconds later.
There was a scramble for the ball on the Grizzlies end. Jordan Farmar gathered the loose ball and was alone with Bryant on the break. Farmar gave up the ball to Bryant for the dunk.
West’s silhouette is used in the NBA logo, earning him the nickname.
Gotta love how they throw in the added detail about Kobe shaking his head after Artest misses the three. Congratulations anyway Kobe!

great job Kobe, you are the only player in the world who could TRULY be mentioned in the same breath as M.J. People try 2 throw Lebron in the conversation but he aint there. People may like Lebron personally more so than Kobe but Kobe’s game is far superior, he has no weaknesses.

People choose to hate Kobe, because they dislike him as a person, but the boy is the best in the game period!!!!
We all may like Lebron James, but the boys game is nowhere near Kobe’s. Kobes dedication and discipline in the game of basketball shows-Kobe is a BEAST on the court!!!! He may not be as aggressive as Lebron, but he’s SICK none the less.

Good for that self absorbed lyin *****, does he want a cookie? The one thing they fail to mention is that during Jerry West’s era, there was no 3 point shot. Jerry would have lit it up something awful. I’m a Laker fan, but I don’t care for #24. I can’t wait until he’s done holding my Laker team hostage. I’m not impressed by ball hogging and over shooting….but he’s talented. Ha…imagine him playing in Jordan’s era…I doubt he could handle the tough defenses of that time. The rules have been changed to make things easy for ball hogs these days. Would like to see D. Wade replace this foo….

I totally agree. The Lakers are the only team I grew up liking but now hate. Magic Johnson is still the greatest laker of all time (G.L.O.A.T.). Showtime was fun to watch. He even made Kurt Rambis look good. Now it is just isolation and Kobe 1 on 1. Boring.

Oh poo on the lot of you that simply deny the Lakers the glorious position they deserve. No other team in the entire league is as respected and feared. They sellout arenas whereever they go because they are, have been and will always be the team to beat. As for Mr. Bryant, brava indeed young man for your accomplishments. Your athletic grace and superior work ethic are by far better than anyone elses in the game. No as far as common sense dear, always check the age first and for the love of California, pre-nup darling, pre-nup!!!!!

@White Devil…true dat! Magic Johnson rules the entire Laker Kingdom regardless of how many points #24 scores. No other player in franchise/league history could make sub-par teammates look so great like Magic did, and probably never will. Sick of all this “me me me” attitude/concept in basketball today…it teaches the youth nothing but how to be self centered & ignant.

kobe the rapist has the advantage of an extra point for 3 point shots, he has approximately 1900 points coming from these shots, Jerry West did not have the 3 point shot line when he played and brother, some of Jerry’s shots should have been 4 point shots.
