Obama Responds to New Yorker Satire Cartoon
The cover of the July 21 issue of the New Yorker magazine has caused a stir in the political circuit and prompted reprimand from the Obama campaign. The magazine depicts the presumptive Democratic nominee for President and his wife in a decidedly anti-American cartoon.
Illustrator Barry Blitt drew the Illinois senator wearing traditional Muslim garb while his wife, Michelle, is in fatigues, sporting a big afro, and has an AK-47 slung over her shoulder. A portrait of terrorist Osama Bin Laden hangs on the wall of what appears to be the Oval Office – above the fireplace in which an American flag is burning. The two are engaged in the now infamous “fist bump” – which has been referred to as a “terrorist fist jab” in less flattering circles.
The candidate is now responding the cover, calling it an unsuccessful attempt at satire that will likely fuel misconceptions he has long battled over the course of his presidential campaign, reports CNN.com. Obama, however, attempted to downplay the toon’s overall impact.
“It’s a cartoon … and that’s why we’ve got the First Amendment,” Obama said. “And I think the American people are probably spending a little more time worrying about what’s happening with the banking system and the housing market, and what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, than a cartoon. So I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about it.”
“I’ve seen and heard worse,” he said. “I do think that in attempting to satirize something, they probably fueled some misconceptions about me instead. But that was their editorial judgment.”
The cover drew heavy criticism from both political parties after it circulated on the Internet over the weekend. Both presidential campaigns immediately condemned the magazine, calling the illustration “tasteless and offensive.”
In an interview with CNN’s Larry King, Obama also pointed out the implicit insult to Muslim Americans in the magazine cover.
“You know, there are wonderful Muslim Americans all across the country who are doing wonderful things,” the presidential candidate said. “And for this to be used as sort of an insult, or to raise suspicions about me, I think is unfortunate. And it’s not what America’s all about.”
David Remnick, the longtime editor of the publication, said Monday he believes the ironic intent of the illustration — to satirize misconceptions about Obama — will be clear to most Americans, according to reports.

I watched Barack on CNN with Larry King last night, he said that he’s been in the game for 2 years now and he’s become really thick skinned to all of the bull***** being thrown at him, he did very well.

Because, black women are the most ridiculed women on the planet. White women are praised for everything, but a black woman is torn down. Michelle is a great example of a beautiful black woman. She’s smart, beautiful, excellent mother, and very supportive of her husband, an yet, people in the media find a way to tear her down, and I surmise that this is so because she is black. I think American society in particular expect both black men and black women to be failures in all things, and the fact is, Barack and Michelle proves that stereotype wrong. I am proud they are black. I am voting for him because he is black. It’s my right and privilege. I know many more who vote against Brack for being black, so I choose to praise black people. it’s ethic pride, honey. And I know other ethich groups who say ‘Latina Queen’ and so on, and so forth….
Furthermore, the values of the Obamas are on the strength the values that black people are extremely proud of. they reflect us in every way that counts, I think. But, they reflect other Americans, too, and that proves that there are people of every race that see that great people can come in ANY COLOR….

Also, as an aside, I personally see nothing wrong with expressions of racial and ethnic pride. I love it when disparate groups celebrate their heritage and contributions to our diverse culture. I recently told my mom that the American Medical *****ociation, the national group of physicians, formally apologized last week for the past racism that black doctors suffered. There were long-standing policies that barred African American physicians from joining medical societies (black doctors responded by forming their own organization, the National Medical *****ociation, in the 1800s). Many other predominantly black groups were created out of necessity to counteract the discrimination that African Americans were forced to endure. We have a rich history in this country and have overcome many obstacles, and this is a time that none of us will forget, no matter the outcome. No matter what your party affiliation or whom your candidate of choice is, I believe we can all take pride in this moment.

Explain the comical part about the cover.
The explanation of it being satire is easily debunked based on the FACT that polls have reflected people BELIEVE this garbage. The point of something being “satire” is that it is exagerrated to the point of it being UNBELIEVABLE. The New Yorker was well aware of the polls conducted demonstrating that people BELIEVED and still chose to run the cartoon. The New Yorker failed in their “attempt.”

At a LaRaza meeting over the weekend, Obama told the latino audience that he was not going to take a single Latino vote for granted. He’s spoken to the Jewish community, the gay and lesbian community, and the working cl***** whites. He’s spoken to them and has told the SPECIFICALLY what he is going to do for them uniquely.
I’m waiting for him to do the same for us. Let’s hold Obama accountable for the 90%+ support he has from our community.

When people say that they’re voting for Barack because he’s black it’s not just BLACK it’s pain and struggle behind that *****, slavery, segregation, The Civil Rights Movement, the *****ination of Dr. King ect..Every black person who says they are voiting for Barack because he’s black can tell you some ***** that they’ve been through..pride, frustration, racism it’s a lot of things that go along with the term BLACK.

My point is that instead of seeing people say “I’m voting for Barack because he’s Black or people voting for McCain because he’s white, why can’t people say I’m voting for Barack because eg. I think his plan on handling soaring fuel prices is more feisable than McCain’s.

Yeah, this latest embarr*****ment for Jesse may be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. Jesse has been on record numerous times opposing the use of the N-word, yet he was caught on tape (at Faux News, no less) uttering the offensive term. This has been a crazy campaign year! But Isn’t the Presidential Candidate’s Plans and Policies on how he will lead this country much more important, and this should be the main reason on which to base on who should be our next president? What if the Candidate is your skin colour and understands the trials and tribulations that come with that, but you don’t agree with some of his policies and plans on how to run this country? – would you be ok with saying “oh well, he’s the same skin color as me, so hence I can overlook the issues I have with his policies”

You’re right issues are important and Barack is doing a good job in addressing issues, this isn’t just some black guy running for president with no vision, he couldn’t have gotton this far on race alone because there’s not enough black voters to get him there.
And as far as some people saying “Im voting for Obama because he’s black” we can’t do anything about that, it’s like free speech you can’t tell a person why they should or shouldn’t vote for a candidate they have the right to vote for issues, race, or eye color..You will always have people like this in EVERY ELECTION it’s a given..I feel more blacks are voting DEMOCRAT more than RACE, if Barack were republican he probably wouldn’t get half the number of black votes that he has received..I’m not voting for Barack just because he’s black I did take the time to watch the debates, read some articles and follow the world news and do my own personal research, I watched Obama on CNN with Larry King the other night, I even pay attention to McCain who just met with the NAACP..And yes we have simpletons who will only vote for race without doing a single ounce of research or watching a single debate but voting is a constitutional right not an intellectual privilege.
If Barack looked like Tom Cruise or George Clooney with the same accolades behind his name, a Harvard Education, a Princeton/Harvard educated wife and was getting 90% of the black vote no one would question the black vote and you’d still would have uninform individuals giving him votes because of his party so it’s really a no win situation.
