Lil Miss Sunshine stay shopping. Rihanna was seen outside of Fred Segal’s yesterday afternoon. She talks about “colorstruck” issues she faced while growing up in her recent InStyle Magazine feature:

“It made me angry; it made me want to fight in my younger years. Having lighter skin wasn’t a problem in my household, but it was when I went to school – which really confused me at first. For the first six years of school, I would go home traumatized. The harassment continued to my very last day of elementary school.”

More Rih-Rih is just under the hood.

What the hell is she talking about??? She’s trying too flip the script. What BullS@$T.Everyone knows that it is the DARKER skin people all over the the world who suffer the most prejudice/discrimination directed toward them baised on their complexion. She’s just trying to get sympathy.

  • Just_Wanna_Know

The probably really teased her cause of her big forehead. LOL

  • ebGCH

    Lmao…

Wow, well I’m a brown skin girl; and everyday I see how someone with “light skin” is treated like their ass hole ain’t brown on the inside.

    Do I care? No.

    Why? because I’m an adult.

For the record all women are beautiful.

  • Hannibal

LIGHT SKIN OR DARK SKIN, WHITE WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED BETTER!

  • always knew

I like Ri-Ri, even if she is a little weird….I don’t believe her about being teased, normally light-skinned people have it easy…She does charity work, she’s young and usually nicely dressed, nice attitude, makes her a beautiful young lady, not just cause she’s lightskinned…..LOL about the forwhead, ya’ll always find something….

  • always knew

@Hannibal, white women always looked better, that’s some bullshi-, why do you even bother, always to put down black women, what did we ever do to your self-hating a–?

I dk want to know, you’re just not that important…

  • WhatsYoursIsMine

I guess it depends on where you’re from. I know some people from the islands that complain about being treated worse because they’re lighter, then I know darker people who complain that they getted treated worse. Same here with the Americans. My light skinned friends talk about having to prove their blackness to other blacks, and my dark skinned friends complain about having to work extra hard to prove how smart they are/pretty they are/etc.

I’m right in the middle, so no complaints here.

  • always knew

@Hannibal- Fu– your trash as-! Why do you always have to down every women of colour? Who do you think you are? You’re right I don’t care about your trifling a–, every comment section, you’re on here, putting everybody down, it’s Friday, take your broke as- back to the projects, you must be white, talking all that trash. You are broken down physically, mentally and especially financially, so keep hating on, it doesn’t affect my life, one little bit. Fuc– bs artist…. The hate that hate made, fu– you havenoballs….

  • always knew

I was right, that was your whorish mother on the pole…I had previously apologized but stick that right up your ugly a–. Why no pic havenoballs? Cause you look like shi-????? Hate on hater, NEXT….

  • Smokie

Light skinned girls get teased and treated poorly. Especially if you are any ways cute. And especially in elementary school. When you are that young, you don’t know that “light is in” — all you know is that all the girls at school are ignoring you, calling you white, fighting you, and treating you like sh!t. You cry. You stay outside trying to get dark. Then you get older and realize…it’s all good. But in the mean time, it AINT.

  • Smokie

And notice that I said light skinned GIRLS get teased. I didn’t say women. I am speaking of pre-teens.

  • Hannibal

SHOULDN’T YOU LADIES BE IN THE KITCHEN MAKIN YOUR MAN (MASTER) A SANDWICH OR CLEANIN UP AROUND THE HOUSE LIKE WOMEN SHOULD?!

    @SARAH JANE

BLACK WOMEN DON’T LIVE IN THE UK! THAT’S LIKE A WOMAN LIVIN IN COMPTON!

  • Hannibal

*A WHITE WOMAN LIVIN IN COMPTON*

  • Karen

And my friend’s son has been taunted and literally traumatized to the point of hospitalization all through elementary AND middle school….

    …AND HE’S A WHITE BOY!!!

I was teased for being an “oreo”….

Another kid was teased for being fat…

Another kid in school was teased for having big azz cola bottle glasses–back in the day those glasses were THICK….

You get the point: It had less to do with her complexion and more to do with the fact that KIDS ARE JUST PLAIN EVIL!!!

  • always knew

@Smokie, Wow!!!! Never realized it was that hard for the light skinned girls. I always say black is black, I wish we could come together and stop the madness, we need to heal, come together and move forward…It really shouldn’t matter, what hue you are, we all need to get past, the colour issues..I didn’t realize that the hate went that far,,,,,wow….

  • jackie

Rih Rih love you, but that story is soooo old and tired!! i am from the Caribbean so you should know we know what time it is, hop off the light skin, dark skin band wagon, no need for it. Don’t believe a word of it either, you would still be beautiful if you had darker skin. you can’t be different and coming up with the same story every medium-brown black female of color coming up with!!! people are not stupid!! it’s a clever way some women of color try to say they are better and prettier than darker skin tone. get off the skin tone bull!! WOMEN OF COLOR….. FREE YOURSELVES FROM MENTAL SLAVERY!!! our different shades of colors are all beautiful. Enough of the nonsense!

@Sarah, Thanks but no help for Havenoballs, just little kids playin on the computer while mommy is at work. No Havenoballs, I am not supposed to be doing a damn thing. I have already made sure that I don’t have to work or struggle. I am a successful black entrepreneur, that owns several ventures and businesses. I got started early, learned from my Dad and other successful family..I have people like you, working for me, 24/7. My money is made no matter what…So I can be home with my children, waiting for my husband to get back from taking the kids shopping, so we can leave for the weekend. You wouldn’t know anything about that, though,…..2 more hours until 5:00pm, you better hurry or your mom will catch you on the computer, you know you’re supposed to be doing chores…

  • BellaY

One of my sisters is extremely fair skinned, she used to get harrassed all the time when we were growing up. There were a couple of times when I thought I might have to beat some chicks down! It was a little unnerving for me to see the way some women reacted towards her. I stopped being friends with a grown woman once because of her reaction to my sister when she first saw her. For the longest time my sister was self-conscious and thought something was wrong with her. That kind of stuff is really sad and hurtful. SMH!

@ Self-hate is a powerful thing. You asked, and I amswered your trifling behind. That’s what black women have done. You really are stupid, I will not respond to any more of your comments, you really are too simple for words. All ladies, on this comment section, see what happens, when you don’t educate yourself, you turn out like have no balls,at home, with no job, commenting on nothing, trying to get a rise out of people, nothing but insults,

I can’t stand a useless black man that hates black women. No use for them at all….Ladies, continue to rise and do you…

Well, Rhianna should consider herself lucky. If it weren’t for that light skin, she wouldn’t have had a snowball’s chance in hell of entering the music industry with THAT voice and THOSE dancing skills.

Rhianna probably exaggerating. She fine as all outside though…

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

I think light skinned men have it harder than light skinned women. Fair skin is associated, for better or for worse with feminitiy and I imagine they have to prove their masculinity to people especially black people. I’ve heard about stories of light skinned women being beaten up. Its jealousy.

  • Jahpson

    its true.

they call you redbone and other kinds of mean names. Those of you with west indian parents would deny because they were the ones making fun of the light skinned in school.

I was called out for it too. Told to get a tan, why am i so yellow and other hateful stuff!!

I can relate to what she is saying…

I am sick of hearing about this chick.

She’s pretty and all but I don’t get the obsession.

Take A Bow and Hate That I Love You are the only songs she sounds good on.

Other than that she doesn’t even sing or perform that well. I don’t get it…cute clutch though.

  • danc3

ok she is just wanting sympathy points! that girl cant be traumatized…i went through the same thing kids picked on me for bein mixed, light, & having long hair, but i didnt go home traumatized…i went home happy for beating someone’s ass that day for steppin outta line wit me or i just ignored them.

  • oh please

why would rihanna say that its not like that in the islands. are u telling me there arent any light skin light eye girls in barbados. because i know in jamaica there are white jamaican, indians, chineese and all.

  • deeva

i feel rhi rhi on that. im extremly light skinned (thanx to slavery and all) both of my parents are much darker than me yet i came out lookin like an asian baby with a fro…anyway i have cousins i havent talked to in over 15 yrs simply cause they tortured me. not just calling me names but hitting and slapping me plus pulling my longer hair. ive been chased by groups of darker skinned black girls on more than 1 occasion.

i have a friend who is creole (my grandfather is too) and she has the same life story. we both share a mexican friend who i kid u not, has said “damn im glad im not lightskinned” cause she’s been chased with us.

im pretty timid and mind my own business but it doesnt matter. i still get the eye rolls and the “she aint cute” comments all the time.

now that im older i dont give a damn. ive realized i am damn cute otherwise hatin ass people wouldnt notice me nor need to let me know im not attractive…

having the people u identify with the most dislike u simply cause they think u have it better is hard. just like its hard being dark skinned around a bunch of white folks…

black people come in the most differant shades and are ALL beautiful…

  • Hannibal

NAW, NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE ARE BEAUTIFUL, BUT ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE!

  • Erica

B!tch, you not even that light. Them kids ‘traumatized’ you because you looked like an alien and had a scary voice when you sang.

Oh…My….DAMN! I almost forgot to type something about Rhi-Rhi. Or is it–Rih-Rih?

    Anywho–

I finally looked at her video of the “go ahead and take a bow”. Or is it “It’s over now?” Or “Sorry you got caught?”

Whatever it is–I think she did a good job. It wasn’t like she was screeching out of her vocal range or anything like that. Other than the young man in it looking like a plucked chicken, I thought it was good. I thought she should’ve swerved sharply to her right and ran his ass over. Then, it would’ve REALLY made for a good video!

  • nelle

kids will tease no matter what, thats just what they do!!! its no big deal. i remember being teased for being light skinned but it wasnt just me, EVERYBODY got teased. whether you are light, dark, short, tall, fat or skinny, you WILL get teased by other kids.

  • nelle

im cracking up at you saying that the guy in her video looked like a plucked chicken!

  • CriticXtreme::

  • djdjek

    damn she’ve got nice legs….lol

  • The Truth

The woes of a light skin girl… OOOOOOO poor Rih Rih…

    Next,,Please

  • Reina

I’m light skinned. A lot lighter than Rhianna. I was called half-breed, mulatto. In high school girls threatened to cut my hair. She may be doing this for publicity but I went through this for real. It wasn’t until I got in a fight and beat some girl’s a** that I got respect. It’s all about the person on the inside. Skin color doesn’t matter.

  • Slim

For the people who said Rihanna is just making up some sad story about her life- regardless of whether she got teased or not, her dad smoked rocks and left her when she was little- light skin or not, that sucks all on its own. No need for stories.

  • http://myspace.com/yungberg Yung Berg

Rihanna baby, don’t worry about them dark butt women. ;)

  • http://www.google.com daoneuwant

    superherochic(Check me out!)

so why would she give an eff about light skin versus dark skin as a mega issue?

  • Dior

rihanna..baby girl…STOP..b/c u know damn well u weren’t traumatized…what i wanna know is…how rihanna was lookin brown skin wen her first 2 albums came out..all of a sudden she light skin..BLEACHIN perhaps??? rihanna and i WERE the same complextion and now she lighter…NO ri ri u’ve been playin in the bleachin cream ova the years..good job too b/c u have an even skin tone..n e way what is the point of the quote?? rihanna u a clown..

  • Don’t mind me

    Bleaching ha ha

Leave the girl alone desperately trying to find fault with her just makes you look bad. Her mentality is more balance then alot of the others in that industtry and she is alot younger. She is by far more NATURALLY good looking. Nothing to do with skin tone as Kelly Rowland is @ the top of the food chain in my eyes.

Just look introspectively and ask yourself why you feel the need?!

  • SHE ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!

She’s telling the truth kids are so mean because they don’t think about what they say. My nephew is black and spanish, and would come home upset when he was 5 or 6 because the black kids use to call him white. He’s 17 now and I remember this like it was yesterday.

  • JT

oh please! she aint even THAT light skin! she looks practically brown skin to me. Rhianna…GET OFF THE GAS!!

  • SHE ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn what’s with these skin tone issues? It’s not that serious, If your black as Flava or as light as Venessa Williams guess what your still black….and some where down the line it became ok for dark skin men to become attractive but not the women??

  • TriniGeisha

Ok….once again let me educate you Americands!!!! I am from Trinidad and Tobago which is in the Caribbean. Trinidad is probably the most cosmopolitan Caribbean island. Yes we mainly have people of African descent and East Indian but we have Chinese, Portuguese, English, Scottish, Syrian etc. I am VERY DARK-skinned (chocolate brown) and I was tormented for five years straight in Secondary school. I was called things like “tar baby”, “walking pitch lake” and “black and ugly”. Rihanna IS NOT LYING the skin colour prejudice exists heavily in the Caribbean especially in places like Barbados because they have a huge white (English) population. When you are at both ends of the spectrum (very light or very dark) you are ill-treated, ridiculed and bullied. If you are not from the Caribbean you should not really comment on the issue because it is difficult to understand the intricacies of the culture….trust me it is complex. For those people who have West Indian parents…know this….they are probably in denail about the issue because alot of Caribbbean people tend to be very flippant about the skin colour issue when they get OLDER and WISER and like to pretend it does NOT EXIST.Also people who live in America who are originally from the Caribbean like to pretend like the Caribbean is perfect…..if it was soooo perfect why did they leave, ask yourselves that. ALso LEONA LEWIS’ father is Black and her mother is WHITE. ALSO ESTELLE IS BLACK and from England. There are many Blacks in the UK/ENGLAND. Most are originally from the Caribbean or have Caribbean ancestory like NAOMI CAMPBELL, and some are from AFRICA. Also someone said something about East Indians from the Caribbean? Well Trinidad had the most (about 40%) of our population are East Indians and they have a variety of skin colours just like Blacks. Yes they are more likely to have a “sand brown” complexion, but some are very very datk and some are almost White-looking in terms of their colour. SO anymore questions about Ri RI. SHE AINT LYING!!!!!!!

  • Clarisse

Just a note, people–don’t waste your time on Hannibal. It’s obvious (regardless of what colour he actually is) that he is making these comments to be provocative and get you riled up. Don’t play into it.

  • ~*MahoganyGyrl*~

She’s a Beautiful Black Woman regardless of her complexion. Damn it’s 2008 and we still have a Light VS Dark war among ourselves. Its sad. I remember being tease for being Dark Skinned. But My mama didn’t play that insecure sh*t. She simply would say “If they ain’t putting they hands on you, you better not cry over that stupid sh*t” You know what she was right. I remember the same girls that swore I was UGLY was in fact Light, Bald Head (Or had very little hair) Ugly & Look like a Messed Up Science experiment (REAL TALK). Where as I would get ALL the Boys. they probably did tease her and beat her up. then they teased and beat up the girl with the black skin. but then rh was happy she did not have black skin because they treated that girl worse. then a boy liked r because she looked she was light and R felt better. then she begin to notice lots of boys liked her because she was light and she begin to think light was good. and that she was prettier than the pretty black skin girl. and then the black skin girl got mad a r for thinking she was better than her because the black skin girl thought she was better than r. and more black. then both girls grew up and all the boys grew up and no matter what they believed about themselves based on their and any other person’s color they realized that the color of their skin did not protect them from hurt, pain, or loneliness. and they begin to realize that everybody got something they have to deal with. and everybody got a heck of lot more to worry about than skin color. and so they moved on with their lives and tried to find peace, happiness and relative success. except the ignorant ones. they stayed stuck and struck — only cause they wanted to make excuses for things in their life that were not right, wanted to get someone else’ approval, or wanted to find a reason to feel better about themselves. stuck and struck is a crutch. put it down. this girl has a great style about her. she’s pretty. let her tell her story because its her story. everybody got a story to tell. and then let her put it down…she needs to put it down for her own good. so do you. they would not have this problem if they had crust between their toes.

  • Mock Rock Star

If it’s true that her father left her @ an early age then yes that’s traumatic in itself. Children tease other children, that’s life. What makes it worst when you don’t have two, strong parents to void all that mess and abuse you received from ignorant children. Childhood incidents are the reason why people act out and do things that seem irresponsible, needy or whatever you feel is negative.

A sense of God and a good therapist (or self therapy) is what a lot of us need to function in this life, not continuing to put others down because you’re insecure about something that went on in your childhood.

  • CANDY

Please that is a load of BS. Light skin girls get teased and then grow up and realized that they are the prefered skin tone. Dark skin girls get call all kind of names, then we grow up and still get called all kinds of names. Rihanna is where she is in large part because shes light, cause frankly she ain’t that pretty.

  • Jody

Haters can hate but that girl is a fashonista

  • Crustbetweenmytoes

Let’s not talk color, but quality. Dry, itchy, pimply, rashy, ashy, bruised, veined, blotchy, discolored. Drink more water and eat right. Nothing like some nice, clear skin. All you should be happy that you have skin at all…we could be walking around with our insides unprotected.

  • Aoki Lee

Rhianna is doing what alot of lighter skinned sistas do, saying they were teased about being light tells the world that you {in your own mind} believe you are superior to darker skinned girls.

These light sistas still believe in their heart of hearts that dark skinned folks harbor animosity & jealousy towards them simply cuz they’re light skinned.

Perhaps those girls at Rhianna school teased her because Rhianna was a jerk, snob, spoiled brat ugly,ect.. And the words they used to diss her were words that best described how she looked at the time

    {notice she didn’t mention that she was teased about that HUGE forehead of hers!! And we all know how cruel kids could be- they most certainly called her out for that thing I’m also sure they called this broad ugly a time or two as a kid yet Rhianna didn’t mentions THAT either}

There is still some slavery mess going on out here in 2008.

  • Fordham

Light skinned girls are not the only ones that get hated on! Try being a pretty dark skinned girl with long hair & a nice shape

OMG all my life I got hated on & guess where most of the hatred came from…LIGHT & DARK SKINNED GIRLS!!

My sister & I look exactly alike except she’s the light twin I’m the brown twin. My hair is real hers is weaved yet folks call me out for wearing weaves & except her as a “natural” beauty it’s funny cuz we’re identical twins. Bottom Line is some ignorant black folks have a problem when a dark skinned sista is pretty they are willing to accept beauty from a red bone but not from a brown suga.

I say to hell with them

  • http://Tenbul2@yahoo.com Waktakten

So Rihanna was teased in schoole for being light skin. And it left her TRAMATIZED.C’mon Ri Ri,how many DARK skinned kids did “you” tease because of their complection??? And left them tramatized. It cuts both ways.I’m sure she’s gonna say she did not call kids names baised on their complextion.Saint Rihanna my BLACK ass…

  • DanaDane

IDK how they do it in Barbados, but in Trinidad, everyone is referred to by their color (Chiney, blackboy, redman, coolie, etc)…everyone is so mixed in the Caribbean, how can someone be racist?! What they probably were making fun of is that her White daddy was a crackhead, thell the truth Rih-Rih, it will set u free…

  • Well….

@Slim wrote, “For the people who said Rihanna is just making up some sad story about her life- regardless of whether she got teased or not, her dad smoked rocks and left her when she was little- light skin or not, that sucks all on its own. No need for stories.”

PUH-LEASE that is not an excuse! My mum was an alcoholic because my dad used to hit us but then my mum took us & got the hell up out of there & got her act together. I ain’t tramautized i’ve moved on so she definately can!

  • Well….

Anyway….She wasn’t getting teased because of her color..she was getting teased because they didn’t like her but obviously they are going to call her out about her physical appearance.

It don’t matter what skin tone you are. My twin brother is light-skinned with green eyes & short afro hair. Im dark skinned with light brown eyes & long indian hair & we get treated the same wherever we go. We may be twins but we look exact opposite some people in our school didn’t even know we were twins until out last year!

I used to get teased by light & dark skinned girls & boy for having long indian hair. Because im black they used to always claim it was a weave and pull my hair all the time but when nothing happened they looked real stupid and I brushed it off. Kids shouldn’t take teasing too seriously as everyone gets teased at some point in their life..whatever skin tone they are.

  • Tracey

I have been to Barbados, they are complete inbreds and obsessed with white people and the complexion of their skin….seems like Riahanna is also!

Once I was asked if I would ever date a white man, and obviously I was shocked by the question, and reacted with a big NOOOOOOOOOOO, and everyone who was black seemed offended. Being from England I had to explain, it doesnt matter what complexion one is or even if you are mixed race…youre black YOU ARE BLACK! yes they were shocked, their ignorant asses thought being of a lighter complextion one would be accepted as WHITE lolololol

Bajans are backwards, ignorant fools who worship white people, lets not forget slavery wasnt really abolished in Barbados till 50-60 years ago LOLOL

And they are all cousins who share the same surname, what is it…blackman or griffins LOL!

  • Graphixmeister

You ignoramuses need to stop telling Rihanna to shut up. You don’t know her story. YOU WEREN’T THERE. I grew up in Jamaica. I’m lighter than Rihanna with curly hair and hazel eyes. She’s not lying. Many of the darker-skinned kids put me through the mill. And it was just EVIL – because I looked different than them. But it’s not all their fault. Their parents and elders embed that racist crap in their heads and their kids regurgitate it on the play-grounds. This was back in the seventies. Rihanna is much younger than me but it’s sad to hear West Indians still operate by that archaic, self-destructive belief system.

  • Tiff

I forgot i have the issue of this magazine….why do these reporters or journalist or whatever they are lol…ask her the same damn questions all the time.I’m just tired of hearing that “OH I WAS TEASED B/C I WAS LIGHT SKINNED IN MY COUNTRY”. I’m sure she was but come on ppl get teased all the time you grow up and you get over it.

  • Bajegal17

Oh my gosh! How many of you people are actually Bajans. You meet one group and classify all of them…that sounds fairly stupid to me. But anywho. Its elementary school Rihanna, everybody gets teased for something. And after she won the pageant she started acting like she was all that and went around teasing everyone else. so i think she should stop with the whole innocent routine.

And for all you non-Bajans, less than 10% of Barbados’ population is white. The majority of ‘black’ people come in all varieties of skin colours. And I would say that in Barbados ‘red’ people (light skin) have it easier so I have no idea wdh she’s talking about. If someone is teased here about skin colour its mostly because they’re dark but this doesn’t happen often.

Oh and Rihanna’s mother is not INDIAN…she is dark skinned.

And no Rihanna didn’t bleach, skin colour tends to fade when you move to a cold climate.

  • Bajegal17

    @Graphixmeister. I was there.

Don’t worry Rihanna we still love you here in Bim….although after that article who knows anymore…

Light-skinned WOMEN get it the worst from BLACK WOMEN. In college all the pretty light-skinned girls were HATED on furiously but all the dark sistas. Even the pretty dark-skinned sistas were salty.

Was the same way in high school. Yeah, it’s harder in the world for dark-skinned women, but black women feel like they have to make up for that by being evil to light-skinned women. It’s always, “f—- that b—–, she think she cute.”

Beyonce has said similiar things. Black women. You ARE evil the light skinned sistas. It ain’t their fault. They didn’t make the world racist.

  • Tracey

Even in 1966, Barbados was still ruled by Britian LOL

  • Bajegal17

so do many other islands including Jamaica

  • Tracey

    Barbados has no class!

  • Tracey

Oh dont get me started on Jamaica, but atleast they dont bow down to the white man!

  • Bajegal17

since ur quoting history you’d realise that most islands got their independence around that time period.

  • Forgodssake

That child was not “traumatized” for SIX years for her skin color…take it from this island girl.

It’s just a way of her trying to fit in and apologize to her fans for being so light (who don’t really care).

She acts like she is is the only Bajan with her skin tone.

  • Bajegal17

no they just bleach…but they don’t bow down to white people…silly me

  • Tracey

To be honest, Barbados is the only country in the world that has made me feel inferrior to white people, seeing the same black people treat you different from white people was truly disgusting.

  • Common Sense

    @Tracey and Bajegal17?

Are you two SERIOUS? Or are you messing with each other? You both seem to be about 13 years old. I’m waiting for the ‘yo mamma’ jokes to break out.

  • Bajegal17

@Forgodssake. Thats all i was trying to say. Thanks

  • Bajegal17

Sorry if i offended. you @commonsense. But i’m very patriotic and i find it offensive when people insult my country.

  • Tracey

Come on, i have never seen any Island star make it, and go on about their skin complexion, Rihanna is doing because she is simply bound by her small bajan Island mentality.

It is embarassing, for crying out loud! I just want to expose Bajans for the people they are!

  • Bajegal17

Tracey you have to admit. that happens all over the world. When i go to england and i go in certain stores they always follow around me and never the whites,

  • Bajegal17

Rupee is another Bajan artiste who is extremely lighter than Rihanna but he has never complained about his skin tone.

  • Tracey

Okay, the English are just racist, but they are white. That is why i said over here, no matter what your complexion is you would still be classed as black, so skin complexion means nothing to me.

  • Common Sense

    @Bajegal

No problem with being patriotic, but you have to recognize when someone is just winding you up. Never fight with a pig. You both get dirty, the pig likes it, and people from a distance can’t tell which of you is the pig.

  • Bajegal17

it doesn’t matter to me either and to most people i know…so can we just end this now.

  • Common Sense

    @Bajegal

No problem with being patriotic, but you have to recognize when someone is simply winding you up.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, the pig likes it, and people from a distance can’t tell which of you is the pig.

  • Tracey

Of course it doesnt matter, so why is Rhianna going on about it?

  • bigblack

I notice that this site hates on lighter skin girls alot. Thats self hating.

  • Tracey

bigblack, whether we are light or dark, or have mixed blood, if we are black we are black and we need to stick together and stop making people feeling about about who they are.

Its only bloody skin, and to be honest it is better to have dark skin and it reduces many health problems people have to deal with enviormentally…like skin cancer and wrinkles LOL

  • Tracey

Millions of people cook and crips their skin JUST to get a bit of colour and there we are hating on our naturally blessed skin.

  • Tracey

Let me apologize for the negative things i said on Barbados, Barbados is still an innate blessed island I did have fun on. It was just this article on Rhianna cheesed me off big time and a few negative experiences I had in Barbados made me reminisce, and I went bashing on my kepboards.

All I have to say to Rhianna is that she needs to get over her complexities, we are all in the same boat and we should be proud of who we are.

  • bapbarbie

I believe Rihanna’s story because I personally know friends that have been through those same experiences from childhood to adulthood.

  • NYC Gal

I don’t believe Ri Ri bleaches her skin because on her first album she was tanner but that was because she had just moved from Barbados. After a while of living in a cold country, the tan fades and a paler complexion emerges.

  • Nurse GiGi

Umm ok Rhi Rhi….like your style sweety, but that comment is for the birds.

My family is from Jamaica and we have all kinds of shades…anywhere from Chiney’ Jamaican to Dark Indi’. Nothing but BS Rhi Rhi. Anyone from the Caribbean knows that, haha.

  • Well….

Its so weird how people are so bothere by skin tone..Im from England & if your black, your black..whatever the skin tone. It really isn’t that serious!

However I do have dark skin friends who do hate on light skin girls because in the media if your light skinned thats seen as beautiful. Even the pretty dark skin girls hate! But then again I do know light skin girls who think that they are better than darker skinned girls because they are light.

In regards to Rihanna..I’ve read a number of times that she acts like she thinks shes better than everyone else..So maybe thats the real reason she was getting teased?!

why was she trying to talk about something so deep for InStyle mag… I thought they just wanted her to take some pretty pictures.

I mean no offense, but what does Rihanna have to talk about?

    -she likes boys

    -she likes fashion

-she wants to be an inspiration to other island kids

    what else???

so now, her publicist is having her say, “i was harassed. I’m scared for life…but look at my Manolo’s. aren’t they hot?!”

We as black folks know what the deal is. but white folks eat that sh*t up!

  • http://www.therealave.blogspot.com Esha the Diva

wow, well this is a very heated debate. I feel bad if Rihanna was teased for being light. I was teased for being very dark (and yes I am Jamaican-American). Still as a dark skinned girl I never teased or tortured lighter girls. In fact in black culture (caribbean o otherwise) I think we all know that its better to be lighter, you are automatically thought of as begin prettier, smarter and better, even if your not. I am sorry if she was hurt by the teasing but I’m sure she also reaped the benefits of her light skin as well, shoot I was teased too and haven’t had any benefits from being dark. Actually I didn’t even realize I was pretty until college and all the (open minded) boys (the ones who weren’t color struck and yes even some white boys) started hitting on me. I was like ‘shoot, I’m pretty, when did this happen?” I thought I was black and ugly for a long time. I guess my point it it sucks to be teased and tortured for you skin color, light or black, but in this society anything that is more closely associated with whiteness is going to be prized over anything that is more related to blackness. Was Ri Ri teased? probably, she was also probably the teachers pet and the girl all the guys liked, all because of her lightness. So I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

  • RICK

Who is anybody to tell a person how they should feel. Whether your being ridiculed for your, race class, religion or complexion ect those are things that one can get over with age, maturity and time. I’m almost 40 and it’s funny I realize people who criticize others for being too sensitive are usually the most sensitive. You never forget how it feels when people are acting maicious towards you whether it’s because of hate or jealousy.

  • Nurse GiGi

    @ St. Boner

    Hey what’s up

  • tiredofthebs

Posts like this exhibit how ignorant some of us are. I am a brown-skin Black woman, and I do believe that she was probably treated like shXX.

All of my cousins, excluding the oldest, are light skin and they realize how I am treated differently for being darker than them, so why is it hard for us to realize that they do go through shXX too.

They KNOW they are treated better, but all have the same story about some ignorant man that likes them ONLY because they are lighter than him, someone thinking they have it easy, and they were tortured in school! And only one of them believes she is the Holy Grail because she has light skin, but the other ones are disgusted when men like them for their complexion, and have repeatedly said that they would prefer to date a non-Black man because they believe they like them only because they are light skin.

Also, all that talk about Rihanna being from the Caribbeans means nothing. Darker people of ANY culture are not treated as good as the lighter people in ANY culture that I can think of. Don’t believe me? Ask a Black person from the U.K., a dark-skin person of Latin descent, or hell a African, and see what they say. So lets not pretend that we are treated good in other places, some cultures actually believe that Black skin is an omen.

When you are an entertainer or public figure, your publicist has a list of what you can and cannot ask. With bigger magazines and what not, the publicist “clears” what will go down in the interview. This is more strick with bigger artist.

Why do you think no one asks Beyonce uncommfortable questions?

As soon as you ask Bey about her sex life (pre-Jay Z nuptuals) Mama Knoweles cuts it shout. no more interview. and there are so many contracts that have to be signed; ergo, the reporter doesn’t put in the article,

“I asked Beyonce about rather or not she was hookin’ up with Rick Ross. She gave such a nervous look. Then her handlers told me that the interview was over.”

I know Rihanna is NO BEYONCE, but you have to think how A&R works. She isn’t very interesting outside of her choices in fashion…and boys (Chris Brown is a boy).

  • really

i find this hard to believe …not saying its a lie but i am from barbados and when u have lighter skin it like you are a queen are somthing …not even white children were teased

  • Sony

Dark skin girls always receive more critisim ridicule than light. Oh yea Rihanna, u were so teased that u became a talent/beauty queen winner

  • Let_the_record_reflect

I believe her, I had to take up for many of my light-skinned friends when I was younger. I can think of two in particular who were hated on constantly because of their skin color and their hair. Girls would try to start things with them all of the time. On the flip side,I used to get teased for being dark brown, it was always red bone this and red bone that. Honestly, that sometimes made me envy lighter skinned girls because they got all of the attention(from the boys). BUT, in high school and especially when I went off to college( a HBCU), I received nothing but love. I have this conversation with my friends all of the time. When a person feels bad about who they are, they focus on what others have that they don’t..whether it’s a difference in skin tone, body weight, money, clothes, etc. It’s just low self-esteem. As a woman, I now know that there is beauty across the color spectrum. We have to come together and stop separating. This willie lynch mentality has existed long enough.

    STFU @ Rhianna

she should be seen and not heard.

  • Seeing beyond colors

You know what I find annoying? People are so quick to disregard the experiences of others. Yes, darker skin people definitely do get discriminated against more by others in just about every culture.

BUT that does not mean that all lighter skinned people have better experiences everywhere. I can tell you from personal experience how when I was in elementary until high school, going to predominately black schools, the lighter skinned kids were the minority (lol and don’t even think about the white people)…and yes we all got picked on by those with darker skin. EVERY DAY I could tell you about how kids would pick on me, push me, pull my hair (it was a different texture), PUT GUM IN MY HAIR, accuse me of thinking I was better than everyone (i was SHY and nerdy), take my school books, etc. I have other light skinned friends who went to other schools, and all had similar experiences, especially over girls picking on them because of their hair.

Point being is, it’s an issue prevalent in the black community, everyone knows that. I don’t know why all colors can’t get along, and I wish they could. BUT I DO THINK it is very hypocritical that everyone is completely discounting what Rhianna is saying. You know if that had been someone of a darker complexion, everyone would have been commenting on the issue. Like when Young Berg made his comment, MANY people responded with equal comments instead denigrating lighter skinned people and stating their own preference for darker skinned people (which is ironically the exact same thing he did). Hypocritical, I swear. We can’t move forward if we’re all still fixated on our different shades of melanin.

  • Simple Truth

If we all try, I’m sure everyone has something they were picked on about sometimes in their young lives. Anything extra is subject to be made fun of: lighter than avg, darker than avg, taller than avg, shorter than avg…The list goes on and on. Perhaps RiRi was just unattractive as a child and blammed her torment on skin color- who knows! However, her experience is not even close to unique!!!!!

Beyonce got teased too but I only heard about it ONCE, on some biography show on VH1. Rihanna always has to do something to distract from her screeching.

Now her stans will come from nowhere and call me a hater and tell me I’m jealous. Oh please. Maybe I just don’t like her.

  • B

She is telling the truth. Black people are such liars, why cant we just be honest about our community’s issues and then we have hope of solving them. She is telling the truth….which is sooo hard for sooo many people!

Ri Ri’s experiences are just that her experiences. I think she should have said what she said in the Ebony/Essence magazine and not in a mainstream magazine because in Ebony/Essence mag more people would have been able to relate to her experience.

In the future, I hope she is more careful what she says because not every experience needs to be made public.

  • Kool Breeze

what rihanna said is sooo believable…since dark skin people are in the majority compared to light.

WAKE THE FU…BLACK FOLKS …WE ARE ALL FRAKIN BLACK STOP THE HATIN…AND JUDGE BY CONTENT NOT EXTERIOR…ONE LOVE …BABY

AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE ALL KNOW THAT WHITE WOMEN LOOK BETTER THAN BLACK WOMEN! HILARY CLINTON > MICHELLE OBAMA!

    @Seeing beyond colors-

I think YOU have a superiority complex which came out when you typed this “we all got picked on by those with darker skin. EVERY DAY I could tell you about how kids would pick on me, push me, pull my hair (it was a different texture), PUT GUM IN MY HAIR, accuse me of thinking I was better than everyone” then you typed “I have other light skinned friends who went to other schools, and all had similar experiences, especially over girls picking on them because of their hair”

Yo what’s this fascination you have over your hair? Don’t you think it’s possible that YOU caused the pain you received by thinking because you were light skinned that you were better? You commented on your hair texture more than once for someone to have been so young I find that a bit odd!!!

  • Sunshine

And what constitutes light skinnedness? Are we judging folks based on the apar bag test or what?

    Someone said how Cassie is darker than Rhianna but Cassie is of mixed race {see below}

“Cassie was born in New London, Connecticut, to a Filipino father and to a mother of African American and Mexican descent”

  • Sunshine

*Are we judging folks based on the PAPER bag test or what?*

  • Yep I said it

People in Barbados are the biggest Uncle Toms in The Caribbean. They are overly fixated on skin tones. Who is red, brown, black and blue. ANd they all still see white people as superior to themselves. She obviously is a product of that system. Fixated with her own skin tone, I am sure she saw herself as better than darker folk.

Didn’t she claim to be part white some time back?

What a horrible thing to say. She is trying to explain to her fans about the troubles she faced as a child. It is ridiculous to assume that she felt superior because of her color. You don’t know what insecurites she may or may not have. You should never presume to know someones mental state.

  • sick of ridiculous hating

Here is my thing with this…I don’t doubt that she got a few comments here and there…or maybe she was teased but….Why in God’s name would she tell story to a magazine who main readers are white?

I remember when she first came out she was brown…I also remember an article she had in Sister 2 Sister magazine. She was told she looked like her Mom and her response was she didn’t think she looked like her Mom because her Mom is dark and she is Light like her dad…this girl has her own color issues and is pandering to white people. This folks…is self loathing at its worst.

TOTALLY agree with you [sick of ridiculous hating]

I could of SWORN she was “brown” too when she first hit the scene. Now she is getting lighter and lighter with every photo she takes *LOL SHoot I don’t know of ANY white folks in the bahamas even the white folks there are deep tan *LOL

  • JustMoi

Totoaly agree with cutey patuti too *LOL

correction thanks to cutey patuti Rihanna is from Barbados NOT Bahamas *LOL My bad ;-)

  • Baje00001

I have lived in Barbados all my life and I am the same complexion as Rihanna. I have never been teased about my complexion. I went to school with all races, all complexions and we got along well.

Now I am not saying there are a couple of ignorant kids out there that may tease others, but it is definitely not the norm. I think it is unfair to cast a negative light on the entire island with an isolated experience that she may be blowing out of proportion just to gain some kind of media attention and sympathy from the public.

As an adult living still living in the island, believe me, this is not the status quo.

  • Lisa

I thought in Barbados they loved light skin ppl, they have the light is right mentality, hell they kiss the white man’s a$$ all the time, very white minded in barbados, doubting the accuracy of this story

  • b.SL

Rihanna needs more people. Booooooo. And double-boo for letting a predominantly white magazine bait her into answering a question about “race”. Stupid broad, doesn’t she know they like to turn us against one another?

I like her music (and used to love her), but she is so tired. Heffa, stop complaining. You made it BIG. And not because you have talent. Not because you can sing. Not because you can dance. Not because you have a oh-so-fabulous body. But because you’re pretty.

You better get on your knees EVERYDAY and thank the good Lord for creating you as such!

  • Toni Montana

poor little pretty girl. im sure she was teased about her skin color. theres not much else to hate on. *think about it* but im sure she was extremely popular nonetheless.

  • BJ

what is she the ONLY LIGHT SKINNED PERSON ON THE DAM ISLAND pulezzz rihanna do us a favot get a coach to help you sing and go back to barbadoes and wear decent shoes we are not buying t his foolishness you are telling ,,THIS IS NOT NEWS AND CERTAINLY NOT WORTH PRINTING still black no matter what color she wants be,,

  • Jahpson

    @ Tracey

shut the hell up you crumpet smellin bytch!

  • makie

there are many beautiful darker skinned black girls who dont get the same notice as light skin girls, from black men, and that’s a damn shame. And what’s this obsession with long hair? It’s not what makes you beautiful, it’s all about getting the hairstyle that suits your face, stylists are experts at this. The missunderstanding about long hair being prettier, is BS, it depends on the head it’s hanging from. Besides, if you got a gorgous face, like Rhihanna, go for a shorter style so we can actually SEE your cute mug!

  • Blackie

@Rihanna…light skinned people always be talking bout they had it hard growing up because of their skin color. I do not know where these people grew up at but in my town the lighter you were the better you were treated. So please come off it girl. Try being blue-black and see how the people accept you.

  • Sunshine

I’m from the Caribbean Rihanna is brown skin she is not light skin. There are girls who are fairer than that. I am the same complexion as her and they refer to girls that complexion brown skin.

  • Mubera

Damn when I read some of these comments it makes me sick! Specially that color issue thing. Look maybe Rihanna is not lying. It could be true, because anywhere u go it seem like color will always be an issue. Even when everyone is mixed it will still go on. Anyway STOP hating on Rihanna, let the girl do her thing!!! See nothing wrong with that!!!!!

  • Chocolate

I got put down an picked on because I was darker not just by my peers but adults.

  • Kool Breeze

Rhianna, stay black and positive…ignore the haters..there are many. From my experience I constantly hear dark skin folks bashing light skin folks “light is this, light is that…why all the hatred and animosity againt your own people?. Our race will never be respected because of this color issue.I spoke to a white friend of mine recently and he asked me why do black people always talk negative about their own race…I told him that a lot a black people hate themselves. As sad as that sounds its the TRUTH!!
