I really don’t think Reggie was to pleased with Kim…He didn’t ask for her to be interviewed…She just popped up…you can actually see her mother and he plotting on how they could NFL.com and down and the right corner of the screen you can see his mother and stepfather putting on championship hats. Usually, I don’t stick up for Reggie but this time he had nothing to do with Kim being interviewed.

To provide some balance, there was a similar backlash among some Essence readers when Diddy and Kim Porter were featured on the cover. My objection was that it gave undeserved legitimacy to a “relationship” that has created more than one child out of wedlock, but marriage (which we have more than enough of already in the black community, IMHO).

That’s horrible. I’ve mentioned another book on here called “Medical Apartheid” that explores the history of medical experimentation and other mistreatment that blacks endured, such as the Tuskegee Experiment. I haven’t read it yet, and I wonder if Ms. Lacks is mentioned in it. I’m sure there are other stories like hers. Thank you for the additional info.

Of course, there are deeper issues. If you read some of Essence’s past articles, you will see topics covered such as how some black women feel invisible, stereotyped, rejected, and abandoned. There are a number of articles that examine various angles on the state of relationships in the black community, and much of it is painful to read and not very uplifting, IMO.

You also have to understand that relationships — including dating and marriage — are very important to all women. When sisters do not see themselves represented in relationships in a magazine that, once again, is designed for them, yes, some of them may get just a smidgen “incensed.”

Well, I can agree with this assessment. I think many of the women who visit this site regularly understand that these threads function as a race-baiting trap. They’ve calmed down some, but I recall some really vitriolic bloodbaths. You had some sisters who openly objected to interracial dating and some brothers who found great pleasure in denigrating them.

Read many of the comments at the beginning. It’s funny how all these black women are trying to all of a sudden appear like they don’t care that Reg is dating KK. KK get more hate on blk websites than anywhere else. It’s not like if Reg wasn’t with her, he would be with a blk chick.

Now as a couple it’s clear that this 24yr old successful man is NOT ready to settle down. When they split up for a minute early this year it was clear that the only reason he got back with her is cause a whole gang of rich black men like 50 where blowing her phone up. I am not saying that categorically, Black people who date/mate interracially are sellouts… but in the case of Black athletes and wealthy Black men and white women… do you REALLY think these women would be with them, if they weren’t wealthy? Conversely, they would find a Black woman who loved them because of who they really are – and would stay with him for the right reasons to get married.

There may be a certain [very small] segment of Black women that only want a thug, but that is not the majority of Black women.

There are more college-educated Black women than Black men… and for the most part, they are looking for an equally educated Black man, not a thug…

As for wanting pale skin, light skinned women are preferred over dark skinned women to a larger extent that light skinned men are preferred over dark skinned men… that is because the perception is that light is feminine and dark is masculine…

It seems that your perceptions may be founded on a very small group of people, but what you are saying is not overall, representative of interracial dating or the divisions between Black men and women.

Black women are not ‘so racist’. In the United States, Black women are the last chosen in the interracial dating pool – and because of the very ugly racial history of this country, there is still a fairly strong perception that Black women are less valuable, less beautiful and less desirable than White women – as dates and wives.

This perception is changing – but slowly.

Because the stigma of interracial dating is lifting, Black men can now pursue White women – but again, it is the MEN that are doing the pursuing, and Wite women that are more receptive.

White men are not yet pursuing Black women at the same rate that Black men are pursuing white women – and this is not simply because something is wrong with us… again, the fairly PERCEPTION is that we are not as good as White women.

So, it is not as simple as Black women just ‘deciding’ to date outside their race. Dating is a two way street, and for the most part, MEN do the pursuing.

No other race of women is told to ‘get over it’, ‘its your fault’, ‘don’t expecting to marry a man of your own race’, ‘so what if your own don’t want you… just go pursue someone else’ There is something wrong with that… and Black women did not create this problem.

Best to know the very complex history before you propose an over-simplified answer.

My observation is that black women & men who “hate” when other ethnicities date “their men/women” were raised in that hate. This is a “learned” behavior not an inherent one. There are plenty of classy black men & women out there who are secure enough in themselves to know it is ok to either choose to date other blacks exclusively or date inter-racially and guess what, some even choose to dabble on both sides of this spectrum when they believe they have met a good person. What is so wrong with that?
