Out of Pocket: Tea Party Speaker Wants to Reinstate Law to Keep Blacks from Voting

The opening speaker for the Tea Party convention got real out of pocket when he suggested reinstating the literacy test for blacks to stop them from voting.

The opening night speaker at the Tea Party convention suggested a return to a “literacy test” to protect America from presidents like Obama a segregation-era method employed by southern US states to keep blacks from voting.

In his speech Thursday to attendees, former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo invoked the loaded pre-civil rights era buzzword, saying that President Barack Obama was elected because “we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote in this country.

Speaking of out of pocket activity at the convention, Sarah Palin was also a speaker and she had to use cheat notes just to deliver her $10,000 speech:

  • Alrighty Then…

So he is saying that the overwhelming majority of American’s that voted for Obama (majority white btw) are illiterate???

    wow… white folks…

  • leave the burner home

    silver!

  • Black on Top

Wow! Hilarious! What did she say that was so complicated that she needed a cheat sheet.

Epic fail! This women sounds challenged. Testimony to our mentally challenged society that she would even have a forum.

  • Black on Top

Tancredo is a racist. Aside from that, It’s funny that he’s on the same panel as dummy palin and is suggesting that there be an entrance exam. She would fail.

  • Niasia

I think most of the Tea party people are illiterate…take a look at a few of their signs.

  • Caramel Cat

I wouldn’t even claim this stupid stuff with outrage, it will further give power to them thinking blacks can’t read in the first place. It’s interesting that they aren’t acknowledging how many illiterate trailer park trash types are out here voting for idiots like Bush….yeah, that’s real interesting…

  • http://aol ebonieladi

I would like to see how many of them would pass a literacy test judging by the dumbness we see on tv every day, which includes the news.

  • Robin B

“Wow! Hilarious! What did she say that was so complicated that she needed a cheat sheet.”

They’re called ‘bullet points’. She had a few key words on her palm. President Chimp can’t open his mouth without being fed every single word on a teleprompter. He can’t do what Palin did. He can’t give a speech with only six words to look at.

  • Bran_Dizzle_

    smdh…

Some of these republicans have been REAL out of pocket ever since Obama became president. A s s a s s i n a t i o n plots, called a terrorist, he was called a liar, and now this?

  • Black on Top

    @Alrighty Then…

No he is saying that Obama is uneducated and unfit to hold office and a “literacy test” would have prevented America from making the mistake of electing him.

“literacy test” were used pre-civil rights to prevent poor uneducated blacks from voting, since you had to pass the test in order to vote.

It’s a slight he’s using and a wink and nod at his fellow racists.

Democrats generally win on the coasts and in metropolitan areas. Republicans win the rural areas. The more educated people generally live in the areas that Democrats win. I think the literacy test might backfire on him.

  • foxxy cleopatra foster

    EVERYONE IGNORE THE TROLL

  • Black on Top

@Robin B are you kidding me? Are you praising her for being able to use key words on her palm vs. Bush’s use of the tele-prompter? Lol!

First off that’s like comparing dumb to dumber. Second she wasn’t giving a speech. She was being asked a simple question.

Clearly there is an audience for her. She speaks at many people’s level.

LOL @ Black on top, so funny and true!

He certainly touched a nerve. Take a good look people. Tancredo is what jealousy looks like.

  • Gimmeabreak78

Unfortunately, what Tancredo doesn’t know is that the literacy tests would eliminate many people from his so-called electroate– poor, rural whites with limited formal education.

Hate and fear-mongering nowadays is the political equivalent of a Hail Mary when your political platform has such little mainstream appeal.

The real racist here is the writer of this article. The writer ASSUMED, when Tancredo mentions a civics test, it referred to blacks. It did no such thing. It was race neutral.

Shame on the writer for injecting race in the story.

How do you know what Tancredo knows? He didn’t mention race. He wants ignorant voters educated. Sounds like a admirable thing to do. I know I hate that someone who can’t name a Supreme Court Justice negates my well thought out and intelligent vote.

  • Man, I just don’t care™

  • http://bossip mybaad

shame on dude for suggesting that anyone that voted for this president, a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and the president of the Harvard Law Review, must be illiterate in anyway. the statement is totally unfounded and frankly ridiculous.

  • Robin B

“lol hick wrote: “im so glad barack is prez just so these farmers can get mad everyday when they wake up.”

You’re so eager to piss people off, you’re going to wake up to America being a third world nation, with everyone suffering. Congratulations bonehead.

its funny that you believe this is the evil empire, and the west is such a bad place, but you have no problem living here and enjoying life. so if you hate it so much GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM NO ONES FORCING YOU TO STAY! shoo fly shoo!

  • Robin B

“This law would actually disenfranchise poor whites that make up a good number of this nation’s poor…”

Actually, it would force people to get educated on civics. Why do you asume people are too stupid to learn?

  • Tamara

This is the same man from Arizona who wants to deport all the Mexican whether they are legal or not. He is also a member of the Border Guard Patrol.

  • Sydney™ (Henrietta Lacks)

Quote from Tancredo: “This is our country,” he added. “Let’s take it back.”

This is the same incendiary, divisive rhetoric that I heard spouted by many “Tea Partiers” when they converged last year in D.C. And I was very disturbed to read Sarah Palin’s calls for a new “revolution.”

All of this is deliberately targeted language designed to rally those who still hold dear to antiquated, ignorant views. It’s offensive and potentially dangerous speech.

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @Robin B

First of all, you are dumber than I first
a s s u m e d you to be if you don’t think that the phrase “literacy test” is coded language meant to refer to blacks, Hispanics, and other undesirable minorities, which is why The Voting Rights Act was put into place specifically outlawing poll taxes and poll testing.

Secondly, if by “someone who cannot name a Supreme Court Justice” you mean yourself or your mother, perhaps the two of you better get cracking on studying for your literacy test.

I’m a law student with a concentration in Constitutional Law, and I hate it when a troll poses as a pseudo-intellectual on a black gossip site only to spew ignorant venom under the guise of enlightened discourse. Perhaps your comments will be better-appreciated at a Tea Party convention. Be sure to speak slowly, though, so Sarah Palin can understand you.

  • Black on Top

    @Robin B

The word n i g g e r has a history does it not? Well so do the words “literacy tests” and notice the he preceded those words with the words “return to”. That is crystal clear. SMH. You call your vote educated. You must be a Palin constituant.

Also, what makes you think that the tests wouldn’t screen you out? Because you’re so smart? Lol!

What do we do to protect America from people who have a mentality like him from ever being PRESIDENT, again, is the REAL question people need to be asking themselves?

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @Robin B

Furthermore, I also think it is hilarious you choose to bring up ignorance of the Supreme Court as your calling card. Was it not your fearless leader, Sarah Palin who could not name one Supreme Court decision with which she disagreed besides Roe v. Wade in the Katie Couric interview? This was the woman who wanted to be within a heartbeat of the Presidency and she could not name one other Supreme Court decision, but knew she wanted to one day potentially have the power to name someone to the Court? Spare me.

  • http://bossip mybaad

the reason its implied that he’s speaking of african americans and the poor is because everybody knows that “standardized tests” were deemed socially and economically biased due to content. And were supposed to be updated because of it. This situation is no different. example.. a kid raised knowing knots as a measurement of nautical speed and not just sumn that happens to ur shoe string. lol… the “bullet points” have been instilled from birth in sum but obviously not all. hence the cringing with the mention of such tests.

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @brnhornet

You missed the point entirely, sweetie. The “literacy tests” of the pre-Civil Rights Era were not really tests to measure if a person could read. It was a test measuring the test-takers knowledge of obscure and obsolete laws that very rarely had anything to do with the election at hand. To give the government that type of power again would be a foolish and dangerous thing to do.

They hate us so much when they need to be paying attention to China, Russia and Iran. They are the ones that tried to remove the dollar from being the reserve currency. Hell, they need be concerned about the illegals sneaking into the US, using our resources and not paying any taxes. And as far as the Middle East, Iraq will rise to be the next robust economy. I don’t believe that all white people are racist but for the ones who are, I wish they would all just DIE!!

  • Robin B

“The more educated people generally live in the areas that Democrats win”

Really??? So you think inner city ghettos are full of more educated people, huh? The typical Democrat voter tends to be under-educated, un- or underemployed, on food stamps, welfare, living in dumpsters, living in their beaters. As a whole, blacks are the least educated racial demographic, and vote for Democrats 95 to 1.

So you go ahead and think Democrats voters are the smart ones.

you do know that blacks make up only 13% of the population. So there is no way that we alone voted Obama into office. And there is no way we make up the whole or majority of the democratic party. Even the Rethugs tried to argue that Obama was an elitist along with the rest of the democratic party. Can’t have it both ways are we elitist or illiterates?! Just look at the map of the red states most of them are in the south or in the middle…look at the illiteracy rate of those states. Even the drop out rate is higher in the red states. The facts are the facts. Also do you think rural towns where moon shine is massed produced are full of “intelligent”people? The rate of higher education across the board is low in this country compared to other developed nations. America the great isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @Robin

To equate Obama’s slip of the tongue with Sarah Palin’s fundamental ignorance of the Supreme Court is a feeble attempt to delegitimize Obama’s presidency. Palin has time and time again proven herself uninformed and unprepared for the type of leadership role she sought/seeks. That is why the McMain campaign didn’t let her field unscripted questions from the media.

The fact that she has yet to articulate any comprehensive plans to correct her perceived abuses of the Obama administration despite the fact that she has nothing but the time, media attention, and ability to speak freely she claimed she lacked during her failed VP bid isn’t surprising. The woman is an empty vessel and puppet of a fringe group of people shockingly dumber than she is.

    @Robin B

    0bama taught the Constitution.
During his SOTU speech he said, the Supreme Court decision will open the floodgates for foreign corporations to spend without limit in our elections.

But that’s simply not true. He lied. Laws forbid that from happening. But you keep focusing on bullet points written on Palin’s hand, okay? Ignore how deceitful and ignorant 0bama is
    ________________________________________________

Unfortunately dear, the only ignorant one here is you. In the recent campagin finance decision (Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission), the Supreme Court effectively changed the last 150 of campaign finance laws by deciding by a 5-4 margin, money is speech, therefore the money of a large corporation can be used to endorse or repudiate a candidate in an election. (Funny enough, the political right has been the side crying about activist judges for the last few years now.) About the specific subject of foreign companies using their money in US elections, Chief Justice John Roberts said this:

“…it would be overbroad even if the Court were to recognize a compelling governmental interest in limiting foreign influence over the Nation’s political process.”

In other words, to expressly forbid foreign corporations from contributing to US election campaigns at this time is too restrictive a limitation to place on them. So if Sony, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, or even Haagen-Dazs for that matter want to air anti-Obama ads, they are currently free to do it. Of course, we all know that the political right has been in the pocket of big business for a long time.

Once again, you and people of your ilk have demonstration a fundamental ignorance of the Supreme Court.

  • bossip.got.nerve

Smh. Bossio is always trying to put a title on these articles. Can people read them and formulate their own opinion? He said a literacy test. That has nothing to do with BLACKS voting today. If you knew anything about history, the time the law was made Blacks were not allowed to have any education so they would obviously fail the literacy test and not be able to vote. There are so many people in this country who cant even speak English properly and they have the right to vote. Maybe he felt like the people who voted were not intelligent and they just voted because someone told them and they couldn’t think for themselves. Anyways he’s just mad b/c Obama won and is saying that people who voted for him are stupid which would include white people. But really who cares, he’s president deal with it.

  • MzTee

A lot of southern white Republicans can barely read or write, so he’s shooting himself and the Republican party in the foot by suggesting instituting voting literacy tests as it takes away the majority of their base by prohibiting the BUBBAs from voting.

Hell, the Republican’s number one bimbo Sarah Palin probably wouldn’t be able to pass the literacy test.

He needs to STHU…and sit down somewhere.

Niasia “you do know that blacks make up only 13% of the population. So there is no way that we alone voted Obama into office.”

The issue wasn’t who voted 0bama into office
The issue was, education in relation to voting patterns. You think high school drop out welfare mammas vote Republican? NO WAY! The fact is, being in poverty means a lack of education. And it’s these people who vote for Democrats overwhelmingly. Simply because they think Democrats will redistribute the goodies to them.

Be honest. What’s the last hand out poor folks have received from a Democrat, nationally?

The rethugs only care for the rich regardless of skin color. But like Caramel Cat says both parties play for the same team…I will be renewing my passport next year and looking for another place to call home…we are citizens of the world! Of course there are more whites on welfare. They’re 85 percent of the population. I’m not judging anyone. I simply mentioned statistics. Blacks are the least educated race, overall. It’s a fact, not hate. Look it up. Lower income vote Democrat. It’s a fact. No opinion, just undisputed truth.

  • Robin B

The “literacy tests” of the pre-Civil Rights Era were not really tests to measure if a person could read. It was a test measuring the test-takers knowledge of obscure and obsolete laws that very rarely had anything to do with the election at hand.

Do you think it’s possible to create a election test that deals with important and relevant issues? It seems the anti-test argument basically is, the old tests were bad, so lets no have any tests at all. I think we can have a fair test that forces people to get educated. If there was a national vote test, would you educate yourself, or would you insist on remaining ignorant?

Who would design the test? Since the results would determine who will win the election, don’t you think there would be a lot of money spent on influencing the questions? Would you want Obama supporters to design the test? I bet if he did, there would be a lot of questions about African American history. How would you do on that?

    The question is moot, since

  • White Devil

    @ Robin B

I was talking about a civics test, not literacy. And I was going to say the question is moot since poll taxes and tests have already been determined to be unconstitutional

  • drenk

    @White Devil

    the questions would be -

    1. Isnt Mayo delicious?
    2. Dont you justlove rod stewart?
    3. Isnt it fun to dance embarrasingly bad?
    4. Who was better Larry Bird or Michael Jordan

come on you know who these questions for

  • White Devil

    @ drenk

That is funny stuff, but Democrats are now in power. I don’t think that Robin B wants them designing a voter test.

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @Robin B

Since most high schools already teach civics classes, and most people who haven’t finished high school don’t vote anyway, why would you want to make a federal vote test?

It seems that the only reason to make a test to vote is to make sure that only the people who come up with the “right answers” are allowed to do so. Just like White Devil stated earlier, exactly who would design the test? Democrats, Republicans, or Tea Partiers? You can see the obvious conundrum this would cause

Finally, I see you completely ignored my comment on the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission comments I stated at 15:41. For someone who spouts all this talk about the Supreme Court, you seem wholly ignorant.

  • White Devil

    @ Robin B

Not just 5 judges, but 5 judges who are appointed to life terms. It is not so easy. Plus, they can only determine cases that come before them. So a state would have to institute a poll test, which has already been determined to be unconstitutional, before they could rule that it was legal.

  • Robin B

I think fair questions can be created. Any objection to asking a voter to name his state’s two Senators? Or, name the Speaker of the House? How about, where does government money come from?

Personally, I’d like to see tax day combined with election day. Pay taxes and vote on the same day. The country would sure be a lot different politically if it was.

You would have to frisk everyone coming in, because there would be many volunteer groups passing out answer sheets to incoming voters.

Cause it’s really eating away at the Tea Baggers, Palin, Rush, Hannity, etc., that a Black man is president. They truly cannot stand it, as their vile hatred demonstrates daily. Was I upset that the Supreme Court declared Bush the winner in 2000? Yes. Was I upset he won re-election in 2004? Yep. Now the banks loved it. And Big Oil loved it. -His foreign policy advisor and vocal supporter is Zbigniew Brzezinski. This is the same Brzezinski who created the Illuminati’s Trilateral Commission with David Rockefeller in 1973. The Trilateral Commission is dedicated to a world government dictatorship and closely connects with other strands in the web like the Council on Foreign Relations (member: Barack Obama) and the Bilderberg Group.

-Another Obama claim is that his administration would not be influenced by lobbyists for the corporate cartels and yet he has precisely these people among his campaign advisory team, including Moses Mercado, who has lobbied Congress and the Bush administration on behalf of two Illuminati private-equity firms, the Blackstone Group and the Carlyle Group. The Carlyle Group, which is closely connected to father George Bush and has had the Bin Laden family among its clients, paid Mercado $260,000 while the Blackstone Group rewarded his work with $3.7 million

-Among other professional lobbyists (manipulators of policy) on the Obama team is Daniel Shapiro, a foreign policy advisor on the Middle East, who has some of America’s biggest corporate names on her client list. These include Anheuser-Busch, Daimler Chrysler, the American Petroleum Institute and Freddie Mac. Shapiro also served on Bill Clinton’s National Security Council.

Presidents aren’t involved in government finances. That’s Congress’s job. And Congress has been run by Democrats since 2006. But you knew that, right?

frankiestage “And the level of racism that has revealed itself since Obama’s election does lead me to wonder if racism is an inherent sickness or disease that lives within some (some, not all)white people”

You think racism is reserved only for white Americans? Newsflash slick- there’s racism in every country, in every person on earth. You think it’s bad here, try visiting Japan. I’ve traveled to quite a few countries, and for some reason American blacks are looked down on almost everywhere I’ve gone.

Lucius Fieldon wrote: “I wondered why I had not seen any Blacks at any of the rallies”

There was that one black vendor who was beaten by SEIU thugs. But government is all Democrat. Why would that pizz off the typical black voter? A large part of the tea party movement is anger at the tax rate. Again, if you’re black, why would the tax rate make you mad? With an all-Democrat government, blacks must think things are going pretty well.

I agree but make it for dumb whites also. You should have to take an exam to vote and reproduce. You dont need one for both of those things but you need a license to drive! Go figure!

“Wow!

    _______________________________________________
@Robin- So, lemme get this straight. Obama’s responses at the Republican National Convention, which took place a little over a month ago, were from a teleprompter? Does that mean the questions asked by these conservatives were telepromted as well? You might be right that Obama can’t give a speech like Palin could. He actually takes time to research the information and present REAL facts (not just made-up nonsense presented as true) instead of relying of cynical comments and jokes and throwing God into every third paragraph…

    @ Robin B

    From Wikipedia:

“The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act also called Medicare Modernization Act or MMA) is a law of the United States which was enacted in 2003.[1] It produced the largest overhaul of Medicare in the public health program’s 38-year history.

The MMA was signed by President George W. Bush on December 8, 2003, after passing in Congress by a close margin [2].”

The President signs bills into law. Including bills that have to do with finances. The President does not sign the actual budget into law, but he submits a request that congress generally follows. Especially if The President is of the same party as both of the houses, as was the case in 2003.

I am beginning to think a civics poll test would prevent you from voting.

  • Robin B

Using wiki as a resource? Maybe you’re the one who’s afraid of civics tests.

  • White Devil

    @ Robin B

Bush did not go to war with what Clinton left him. He did not use all of the resources available. He tried to do it on the cheap. Bush senior went to war in Iraq with about 500,000 troops. Colin Powell was chairman of the Joint Chiefs and had learned from Vietnam.

Bush Junior went to war with about 100,000 troops. Rumsfeld was trying to prove to the world that we could fight wars cheaply in order to scare the rest of the world into submission. Big Mistake. He proved just the opposite.

  • White Devil

    @ Robin B

Do you have a more reliable source that contradicts what I have posted from Wikipedia?

  • MzPW

@Robin B….y’know, you have some interesting, conservative-based ideals you present on this site. Sure, it’s only a blog, but I gotta say that you haven’t actually been able to back up one substantial claim you make about Blacks and the support for Obama, the ‘classist/elitist’ title Obama has been stuck with because he actually TAUGHT prior to entering into politics, or any of the Democratic/left-leaning policies he has pushed forward that has not been shaped to benefit the majority of Americans. So, here are some questions I’d like to ask you:

1)Since when did ALL Blacks throw their support behind Obama? Have you ever heard of Clarence Thomas or Michael Steele, or are they not Black?

2)Once again, if Obama cannot give a speech without every word presented in front of him, then how was he able to function at the Rebuplican National Committee meeting AND answer each of the questions that were presented to him by audience members? Wouldn’t conservatives make some big stink over this fact…if it was actually a fact?

3)If the government is all Democratic, why are there 41 Republicans in the Senate now, causing Demos to lose their super-majority?

I’ll start off with these 3 questions. Can you actually provide a logical, proof-based answer? I’m guessing no.

“Incomprehendable”? Did you mean ‘incomprehensible’? Boy, I’m hoping that was a spelling mistake. Otherwise, you really weren’t kidding when you said ‘I don’t need to sound intelligent or interesting to you because i’m not on this website for that…’

Or is you’re simply trying to disguise the fact that you’re not saying anything original? I can’t seem to work up the energy to try and understand what that sentence actually means..I also don’t understand how someone can become a homosexual for initiating an argument…

I DON’T KNOW IF YOU GET PAID BY THE ILLUMINATI TO DEFEND THEM ON THIS WEBSITE BUT MAKE SURE YOU GET RICH WHILE YOU’RE AT IT.. ANOTHER SELL OUT MOFO!!!!!!!

Surprise, surpise–another baseless Illuminati accusation. You’ve really got to put down your copy of “Things To Say When You Want to Sound Smart and Mysterious, But You Really Don’t Know What You Are Talking About”. It’s not doing you any good. Perhaps next, you’d like to tell me that Tupac lives in a condo in Burbank, and he too is a member of the Illuminati. There are apparently more people in the Illuminati than in community college. That’s a hell of a “secret” organization. Shut up, already. You bore me.

LOL…once again, your comments are hilarious! Lemme get this straight- You’re the one on a blog preaching all this Illuminate b.s., you’re the one making all the mean comments (like “Education Morons!!!!”), you’re the one arguing with folks and calling us all sorts of names and WE are the ‘educated morons’? Ha!

Do you even know what MPH stands for? Oh, and I’ve been intelligent; I just decided to get a few extra letters behind my name…then again, based upon your comments, you wouldn’t know anything about that. So let’s just call it quits. If I’m this “educated moron”, you must be two levels above crazy as hell. Now do us all a favor and disappear.

Back to the topic at hand- this Tea Party momvement is going to self destruct.
