As shocking as it may be, if I were intimately involved with a non-black man — let’s say a man of European descent — it doesn’t guarantee he’ll be automatically less racially intolerant. It doesn’t guarantee his prejudices — should he have any — would suddenly disappear.

It’s going to take a little more work than intermingling in the sheets to truly address the historical problem of racism.

You’re absolutely correct. You being involved with a non-black man does not automatically make him any less racially intolerant and will not eradicate racism single handedly.

But from the outside looking in, with the majority dating outside their race, interracial couples will seem less taboo. And I think EVENTUALLY everyone will stop looking at race first, leading to more racial tolerance. Idk, just a theory.

I should amend that to I see beauty in couples across the board. I think Seal and Heidi make a nice couple, for example.

I had a Vietnamese-American co-worker who openly expressed her preference for Vietnamese men. I believe she thought of her choice as a way to preserve her culture when she was ready to have a family. Other cultures have members who hold similar beliefs. I don’t see it as “exclusionary” — it’s a personal preference.
