Ever since the USA went into a recession, people find themselves doing things that they never thought they would just to keep the lights on. According to the AJC, professional women in Atlanta are turning to the strip clubs just get an extra check. Just because the economy is in a slump doesn’t mean the bills stop coming.
Atlanta’s exotic and nude clubs generate $240 million annually, more than the city’s three major sports teams combined.

Would-be dancers are lining up to apply for the $350 permit to work in the city’s 19 clubs, Atlanta police say. Among the usual aspiring actresses and dancers, there are more college students, single mothers trailing toddlers, health and office professionals and even a few age-defying grandmothers — all looking for well-paid work in a city with unemployment above 10 percent.
While there are no hard numbers, Atlanta police say they’ve seen a spike in applications for adult-entertainment permits in the past year or so due to the recession and the recent change in Georgia law that allows nude dancers to be as young as 18.
Those who do wind up working in the business soon learn that even nude dancers have to work harder these days, as patrons spend less and don’t return as often. Even in this tough economy, a dancer can clear about $50,000 a year, and that beats working in a dentist’s office or selling homes right now.
Angelina Spencer, manager of the Washington, D.C.-based trade group and a former stripper turned lobbyist who has been tracking the adult-entertainment industry for seven years, estimates metro Atlanta’s exotic and nude clubs generate $240 million annually, more than the city’s three major sports teams combined.
Despite its enormous presence, the industry prefers to keep a low profile. Clubs like Magic City and Cheetah have built a following over the years, and while the money doesn’t flow as freely these days, patrons still make their way to the clubs. So do the women looking to dance.

I hear that, but shoot a few years back I was single and didn’t have any kids and STRONGLY considered doing this. I had a couple of girlfriends I went to college with that were doing it as a side gig just to pay the bills. I had a financial situation myself and really thought long and hard about it, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it (plus I’m kind of shaped like a barbie so I wouldn’t have made it at the black clubs!) lol… I can see how women may consider it, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it….I chickened out!

I do think women should have more faith in God helping them find a way than stooping to that level. It may be fast easy cash, but long term it’s degrading and damaging. I agree and I feel the exact same way. I used to look down upon women that did this kind of stuff but I think God has been working on me when it comes to pre-judging a situation too harshly. Many people say they would rather go on public assistance than to strip. On one hand I can understand that outlook especially when it comes to degrading your body and losing your self-respect, but then on another hand I know people that think going on public assistance is losing self-respect! I say to each its own. I have been blessed to not have to stoop to this level and I am thankful for it, but there are folks out there with families and bills that will not stop and the economy is in the cr.apper. It’s almost a catch 22 situation for some folks out there…
