This is a messy situation, and stereotypical of what society thinks of black men. I have said all along that he felt called out by Obama for his “dealings” in this arena.

The child may never be accepted by the others in the Jackson clan, and nine years later is too late to slap her in the forehead and tell her she should have had a V-8. But try getting a true father figure in the child’s life and keep her out of this already tangled mess.

This woman is an opportunist who knewhow this man was in the beginning, and is looking for more spotlight. Jesse is dead wrong, but the graceful healthy thing to do for the child is NOT talking to the National Enquirer. The point is, its not the child’s fault. She didn’t choose the way she was brought into this world, yet, she’s the one suffering most. My mom said my dad was getting cold feet about the wedding, and she should have just broken things off. She never blamed me EVER, she even proclaims my coming into her life when I did was the best thing that ever happened to her (that I don’t believe, but I was a very loved and spoiled little thang). I think this woman could take care of her child even if Jessie was not the father to contribute financially. Is marriage really ideal in today’s society? The divorce rate is so high most women today black or white end up being unwedded mothers at some point if you really take a look at it. Or is your situation better than the unwed mother because you are “marrried”. Let’s see there are “married” women, who are unhappy, men don’t want to be with them- so they cheat, men want to be with another man(DL), men are always extra occupied, so they essentially are still handling the parenting themselves even though they are “married”. “Marriage” in the black community has taken on a new meaning not all but for the most part the marriages are not perfect and they have plenty of falls but we as a society are so hung up or “marriage” even though you marry just to say you are married, married to see what benefits you can get out of it, you married but you did more planning the wedding, but did not plan on how you are going to make the marriage last or work. By the way, did anyone here see either of the CNN panel discussions aired over the weekend in connection with the Black in America series (which starts tomorrow, July 23, with Women and Family)? Some of the issues being discussed here were also touched upon by the panelists. I watched the Saturday discussion and much of the focus was on family and education (Hill Harper, T.D. Jakes, Julianne Malveaux of Bennett College, Cornel West, and others).

Ed Gordon, formerly of BET and now on NPR, talked about the importance of fatherhood and mentioned his new site, www(dot)daddyspromise(dot)com, on which fathers can make pledges of love and support to their daughters and access other parenting resources. I really respect Mr. Gordon for taking the initiative for addressing the importance of fathers and father figures in the lives of girls and women.

When you lay down it’s both people responsibility not to bring and unwanted child into the world. Women are no more innocent than the men. I just can’t understand how a woman can date a man for two week and then get pregnant and then want to get upset when the mans a bum.

I think it’s great that he’s going to see the areas of importance, even though I’m sure a lot of people don’t think he should go. I don’t like McCain’s group criticizing him, because McCain has made similar trips. If anything, they’re both doing better than our current president, who never left the US until AFTER he became president.

Jesse did feel convicted by the statement…But Obama didn’t say “Jesse…you know better…you need to step up and be a father to the out of wedlock child you had”…He made a general statement to all african-american fathers…Jesse shouldn’t lash out at him for his wrong doings…just do what you should have been doing all along…be there for your child

I totally agree with the Sasha’s assessment of men in power. Didn’t Vanity Fair just have a story that alleged that Bill Clinton was STILL having affairs on the campaign trail (a charge he refuted, I believe)? Plus, who can forget NY Gov. Spitzer’s precipitious fall from grace? I think the details of his scandalous behavior shocked quite a few people.

No, girl, I hadn’t heard about the SC Senator’s website, but it doesn’t surprise me. My sister is divorced and so I’m helping her out by waking up early and taking my niece to summer school…

EVERY morning when we’re together we hold hands and I put NOTHING BUT positive things in her head by telling her things like:

- You are wonderful

- You are intelligent

- You are “sooo special” to me

- I know you can do it!

- This up coming school year I know you are going to do soo well in school

- You’re going to get Straight A’s

- We’re going to have a great day today…

- You are a lady and so act like a lady

- You are beautiful (*NOT everyday, I don’t want that going to her head – like every 3 days or so – she’s due for that compliment tomorrow)

Point is, I’m doing everything possible to:

(1) keep her off of that pole (stripper pole) – by making sure she has high-self esteem

(2) make sure she is successful in life

Her father isn’t really in the picture and so being that she’s “fam”, I’ve got to step up…

Please don’t generalize, actually, I’m off to Germany tomorrow to attend my brother’s wedding. Yes, he’s German (mom white, we have the same Nigerian dad). Anyway, both of my brothers are sweethearts and their friends are all cool. My “stepmother” is a wonderful woman and I remember when I was there a few years back, other than the color of her skin, she reminded me so much of my mother because they have very similar personalities and she treated me extremely well.

Another war movie I can’t watch again is Casualties of War. It’s too depressing. And I have trouble watching films about slavery (Roots), the Middle Passage (Amistad — cried so loudly in the theater, a man turned around and handed me a tissue), discrimination and lynchings (Rosewood — bawled in that movie), the Holocaust (Schindler’s List/The Pianist/etc.) and just about all human suffering that actually took place.

To be honest the musio industry is garbage now. I enjoy Outkasts, Goodie Mobb, Clipse, Big Pun, Wu, and even some rock stuff. I used to go to every concert in the area a while back, but I have settled down from what I used to be. I know I read this years ago regarding his background and how that lack of being recognized and accepted by his fathers’ family, was the impetus for his wanting to be successful and recognized.

I think most of America realized he was angry because he fits the profile of the shameful, absent father that Barack was referring to. We’ve all seen them, heard about them and no doubt, seen the hurt children left behind.

Children need both parents. A man is just as important a parent as a woman. Men teach you how to navigate in the world; how to be strong and standup for your ideals; how to be confident regardless of what others say. Like it or not, women don’t have all the tools to raise high self-esteemed children. A loving, caring, hard-working man is necessary to raise a happy and successful human being.

For too long black women have put themselves in relationships no matter how brief and have borne children. It’s time black women take responsibility and demand that their men prove their worth.

A man must have good values; want to work; able to keep a job; have an education-even if it’s vocational, some type of skill-no hustling. A man must prove he has the intellect to think and make good decisions about his own life before you join you life to his and this must occur before he marries you and way before you get pregnant by him.
