Another Day, Another Lawsuit

Bugs Monkey is stirring up one more legal battle:
50 Cent wants dollars — lots of ‘em — from Taco Bell for jacking his “good name” for a low-budget promo.
Fitty claims in a Federal lawsuit that the burrito slingers stole his identity by encouraging him to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent, or 99 Cent as part of a less-than-a-dollar-menu promo. While he doesn’t address the total idiocy of the campaign in the suit, Mr. Cent does claim he wasn’t told about the ad until he heard about it in the news — whereupon he totally disavowed it.
Reps for Taco Bell didn’t immediately comment.
It’s doubtful that he’ll even see a penny for this wack lawsuit. This cat never grows tired of drama. SMH.

I think he knows he won’t be paid, it’s more of a thing to get them to stop using his name in their ad. Other celebrities have done this. Even though they don’t appear in the commercial/promotion, your name being in it implies your consent. Calm down Bossip, he’s not the first person to do this.

@ Whatsyours…thank you. I was just about to say that same thing. The lawsuit has nothing to do with personal feelings like Bossip would have us believe. It’s about business, period. And in business you cannot use another person or entities likeness, name, trademarks, without their permission. If you do, you get sued. Business, nothing more nothing less.
I think he’s ridiculous, now that he is worth so much I think he does stuff to do stuff. If this happened a few years back(before Vitamin Water) I doubt his reaction would be the same. How do you sue someone for witting you a letter? It’s not like they put it on a billboard or something. I read the letter and it didn’t make me want to eat Taco Bell.

In the business world,you must have permission to use someone else’s name or anything else of theirs.He has every right to sue.

This is a legit lawsuit. Taco Bell aired commericals (which I heard on the radio) stating that they were trying to convince 50 to change his name to 69, 79, or 89 cent for one day for a commerical. 50 lawsuit contends that their public announcement of this plan was in fact a commerical in disguise using his name without permission. In fact Taco Bell aired these “announcements” before they officially stepped to 50 about changing his name. Furthermore, 50 contends that the announcements did him financial harm as many of his fans had the impression that he was on board to change his name of Taco Bell and many of his fans responded negatively on online boards.
Now I am far from being a 50 fan but he is right. These corporate hustlers think they are slick.
I’m starting to realize who the real punk ***** is in the rap game…….50 cent, he is the only rapper that keeps little highschool ***** going on in the industry. he reminds me of the movie Mean Girls, 50 cent needs to MAN UP AND rap before he becomes totally irrelevant in the rap game,and stop buying men cars that don’t even like you seems a little suspect to me, crushing on a hasbeen actor like val kilmar?

1st of all 50 cent is bull*****. there is no way unless we see all of the details 1st hand of Yo Quiero Taco Bell penning him a letter saying we are going to do a series of promos for our new low value meals. and we need your permission to introduce our brand. 50 Cent was getting mocked by his gang of *****s so he got offended and now he wanna sue taco bell
2nd…a company can have protection on their marketing. they have to research and a series of test runs before it even hits the streets. 50 knows this. he is just a greedy ***** who wanna make Taco Bell go broke

Do you poeple know the law? Are you reading the full story are just what’s on BOSSIP? This man has every right to sue the hell out of TACO BELL. We as black people make it hard on our own people. White folks to this everyday and we are not calling them out so y call him out. I am not a big fan of 50, but if you read the story and know the law,he hasevery right. That is just like them doing a ad and named any other famous person or business ( Wal Mart, Mc Donald’s etc). I hope he wins. They think that we (black people) are stupid and don’t know our rights.

Uh, actually the odds are very very good that he will win this case easily and get a nice damages award. Taco Bell and Yum Brands intentionally misappropriated his name and likeness for commercial gain. I hope they award nice punative damages too because it is of such a willful and malicious nature.

@Realmatic-And thanks for naming what this is, misappropriation. I forgot that word, but that’s one of the first things I learned in marketing cl*****es was misappropriation of character. Bette Midler has sued Ford, Kelsey Grammar sued Geico, so they had to change the Gecko’s voice. I’m not sure if they were paid a settlement, but I know it serves as a cease and desist.
