7-Year-Old Samba Queen Breaks Down Under Pressure, Was She Too Young For Her Role?

7-year-old Julia Lira sparked controversy in Brazil after being elected Queen of the Drums for her Samba school because role is traditionally reserved for adult women, largely due to the provocative costume and dancing involved . Child welfare advocates fought to have Julia removed, but a judge allowed her to participate in the Carnival parade today. Unfortunately Julia did get a little overwhelmed by the events. It’s normal for a child to get overwhelmed by papparazzi — we think Julia held her own pretty well. She’s the youngest samba queen in recent memory and if you check out the gallery that includes some of the other queens, it shouldn’t be hard to see why the child welfare advocate groups were beefing.
