Hovvy on the Hood Life

Jay-Z explains the hood life:

‘I think it’s more important for me to be in touch with who I am than in touch with the streets, per se,’ he says. ‘Being in touch with the streets, keeping it real, that’s become a lie and a cliche. I’m not hanging on the corner in the Bed-Stuy. I hate it when rappers say, “I’m keeping it ‘hood.” I’m like, “Why? What do you mean? No one’s there by choice! You’re in the hood, by choice?”‘

Bling he feels was misinterpreted by the media as tasteless showing off, when really it was a celebration of success by people who had enjoyed precious little of that before. ‘These people came from nothing,’ he says. ‘No-thing. The bottom. And when they got money and cars and houses it was a party. Like, us being here, at the Lanesborough, eating caviar? That just didn’t happen before. Why not celebrate that?’

You Jay Look like he got Cancer?

The closest I’ve been to a hood is what I see on tv. Awhile ago I didn’t think people lived in them being sheltered in all. I wonder what he is going to rap about now.

  • Tealeaf

I can’t understand nothing he is saying, especially after looking at that 80′s Cameo jacket, but I love the sneakers..

Anyway back on topic. The Only reason he dropped AG was to get back to the streets without being critized for it. So Most likely any album he drop is going to be a concept album.

  • Kompton’s Kutie

I get what he’s saying, but some people just go overboard with their bling and flashing.

  • BeReal

I agree with his commens, I think one reason 2Pac got killed is he was always going back to the hood. Once you reach a certain level everybody is not happy about it and jealousy makes people crazy.

As far as the jewelry some of it is okay but we have to learn to be more financially smart. Make the money and don’t let the money make us. so if you never make another album you will still be comfortable.

  • blaq

You know I am really glad J said what he said, I am sick and tired of rappers feeling they can only be taken seriously or be successful if they are from the hood in the streets, still committing crimes even though they don’t have too. I feel as though that is a slap in the face to the ppl who live that life due to lack of choices. Look at rick ross who is denying he had a job as a correctional officer, when he did. So what that he was a correctional officer he was making a living and considering the length of his employment, it probley wasn’t for him, why is that something to be ashamed of unless you were telling a bunch of lies to fit in. If I were worth $350million I would only go to the hood if I had to or if I was giving back to the less fortunate. Now J there is a reason to return to the ghetto, to improve it, you were blessed with success so you can encourage success from others.

  • And…

I was trying to avoid posting this…

I really want him to shut the hell up.

At this day and age and this late in the game…people that need to know – know.

Do folk realize when they’ve reached the point of not having to explain?

    Who are you explaining to?

Shut the hell up man. Learn when to smile & know when to shut the fk up?

He tries to act like he doesn’t but he talks to much.

Hursh the fk. We get it. People in the streets get it, fans get it…it’s the press and media that don’t get it or don’t get enough of it.

  • glok9n

@IJM! LOVE YOU SISTA, YOU HAVE A BLESSED WKND!

  • And…

He should have just not said nothing and left them at hello. He lost me right here:

    “Jay-Z explains the hood life”

    Really?

Why do people want him to explain it anyway?

  • chico

Wow are we really fighting on here about who hood is more hood…GTFOH…A hood is a hood same ish goes on in the BK as I’m sure that goes on in other hoods…drug dealing, killings, gangs etc..I’ve been to too many hoods from BK, Bronx, LA, Miami and they are all the same…I wouldn’t want to live in any hood and if i had money like Jay damn right you wouldn’t catch me still trying to kick it in the hood to stay real…for what? If anything showing people that you can come up and get out is better then just going there and hanging out…

  • riiiiiight

*silently thanking the Lord that both my parents were college educated*

  • Fire

somebody tell this fool to shut the hell up! Point taken u don’t want to live in those conditions…but does he realize that he capitalized and glorified things that went on in the hood…(even though it wasn’t him doing the action)…then, snaked his way to the top(cutthroat hood tactics)….this fool just looked at black in america and realized how silly some of these people look…sooo, he’s no longer there and u are…he’s even going to throw it in your face by saying that he’s eating fish eggs now while you’re still eating beef patties….such a WANGSTA!

  • CUTIE PIE

I partially agree with jay..but I hate when rappers say I din’t have it so now that I do i’m going to buy it..they wouldn’t want it if it wasn’t glamorized on T.V. and if the people that had it didn’t look so damn happy.

  • dc-va

hov must have forgot he got paid by telling stories about how he stills hustle and he must forget he said he will never ever ever ever change. Yep some people are in the hood by choice in 2008, mabey not in 88, but in 2088 the hood sings a different song.

  • He We Go again

First of all a lot of ya’ll idiots dont’ know the difference between hood & proverty. I hate when people on the internet call themselves giving true information about the HOOD but sound so far of it. You never seen a hood, if you don’t know there is two side to every story. There is not just one lifestyle in the hood, or just VOILENCE, and BROKE ASS HOODRATS and DRUG DEALERS, you got a lil bit of everything in the hood, people with degree’s are in the hood. The hood is basicly any city where the majority of black folks live, because wherever we live we bring voilence, so we destroy good neighborhoods & turn them into hoods. The hood is not just the PROJECTS.

  • CUTIE PIE

let me also say that I personally hate the hood. People like to say that its culture when really its a damn mess. I came down on that black in america special that came on but come to think of it they really needed to focus on the bad just so we could feel ashamed and embarrased and fix it.

  • He We Go again

some of ya’ll are so stuck in the 80′s. Black people need upgrade from that. & some of ya’ll might bragg like you so out the hood, and you just one pay check from it or a mile away from the city zone. It’s a lot of people who THINK they are out the hood but they are not. Like people in the burbs arent on section 8 and public housing. It’s easier to get section 8 and public housing in suburbs than cities. Everybody who live past the city line dont’ got it made. some of ya’ll who down the hood are prolly in it and don’t even know it. The hood isnt nothing but a NEIGHBORHOOD, but because it’s a majority minoirty neighborhood, with a proverty rate and crime rate surrounding it, or in the percentage of the NEIGHBORHOOD, people describe it as HOOD.

  • MissBlaze43

My man, Ice Cube, said it best – back when he WAS in his late 20′s / early 30′s:

Hell yeah I moved my wife and kids out of the hood. Why would I keep my family in South Central? So somebody could kidnap them talking about “I want some money, I got your wife, I got your kids.”

  • Erica

His outfit would be on point without the jacket.

  • He We Go again

Thanks meeko, they act like everybody in the hood is living unlavish, however the hood is just when your STREETS are tough, it’s not always a place where ever is broke and starving. it’s a place where a mixture of things happen.

  • MissBlaze43

What rapper was it that said, “Fool, I can roll through any ‘hood from Central to Webster Avenue without my glock.”

I think Be-Real said that foolishness. THEY WILL ROB YOUR DUMB ASS.

  • He We Go again

However think realiticly THE WHOLE HOOD ISNT GOING TO MOVE, so somethingelse need to be said other than telling ppl TO GET OUT. Thats unrealistic. Black people got it twisted, after we all move from the hood to the burbs..then what???

  • He We Go again

& meeko think about this if those same kinda people move to the burbs the same thing would happen, so it’s not the LOCATION.

  • Meeko From Detroit

  • hazer

  • CUTIE PIE

    @here we go again

I agree people shouldn’t run away from the hood because it is a problem..the damn issue is that they don’t see it as a problem. Don’t even lie..how many times have you heard people in the ghetto say we don’t want anything to change? I’m tired of smelling piss in the damn hallway and seeing graffiti on walls people in the ghetto do not have respect for the place they live and its really a shame because they are the first one’s to demand respect.

  • bria

You don’t have too live near the Hampton’s to be doing well in life. I think what he is saying is that there no honor in not trying too better yourself in life and accomplish all that you can. I think that most of these men out here selling drugs don’t realize there full potential. They are already running corporations. If they could find something that they can put their talents in for good they would make more money and don’t always have to worry about getting shot.

I think some people say they keep it hood because they do not have enough money to get out the hood. Let’s say there was no more music and acting for minorities how many of them would not live in the hood. They would be living just like the average black folks. The entertainment business is the only occupation thats keeping most black folks living lavish. The other 40- 50% are probably selling drugs. 5- 10% are average working people living lavish. If Jay Z didn’t sell drugs back in the days and selling record now where would he be. REAL TALK

Keeping it real.. if an artist raps about weight, coke, the block he is speaking of his experiences and what he sees on the streets-thats keeping it hood, nothing wrong with celebrating your success. But Jay Z needs to keep it real, if he aint dealing coke no more, then why is he still referencing it, those days are over.. as he said its about eating cavier in Europe, rockin LV, thats real talk and I can NOT relate.

Jay is definitely right but I must say it is funny how these rappers get common sense AFTER reaching 30 and messing up these young, weak-minded kids because 15 years ago he and others weren’t saying that. But, now, after it is obvious that age 30 on down is complete screwed up mainly the black race,…..NOOOOWWWW you come with some sense. I remember years ago, I heard folks saying that…that constant display of “bling” was not good. So now, you got a bunch of kids running around trying to make money fast and illegal in the name of keeping it real. They are not becoming the Jay-z or lil wayne. They are becoming jailbirds by the thousands who can’t get no job afterwards…..Hey…but jayz did tell the truth there!

  • Trini Chica BK (AKA) As a matter of Fact

Ya DAMN Real…If you’re a broka azz rapper, yes you can hang in the hood, but when you’re making real money, no you cannot hang in the hood. Simple English…Jay is Boss…

  • The Bear

I am thinking thinking that if those who come up out the hood and become successful were more willing and eager to reach back and help to give the younger generation a sense of hope rather than senselessly ‘flossing’ there wealth and trying their damnest to forget where they came from CNN might not be able to portray us with that ‘mess’ I witnessed last night.

I’m not just singling out rappers, I’m talking about everyone. You probably would not be where you are today if it wasn’t for where you come from.

Anybody want to tell me where Jay-z’s music career would be if it wasn’t for the ‘hood’? And who’s better qualified to help strugglers to get up on their feet than someone who’s been there and became a success? George W. Bush???

  • INOCENTbiSTANDR

Can’t really blame him, hell ppl who live in the hood want to get out so why should he want to go back. Only dumbasses or should I say ignorant, don’t know no better ppl want to keep running back. It shouldn’t matter WHEN it hit him to stay away, as long as it did. He finally got it, alot of ppl NEVER get it. You can reach back and help WITHOUT actually going back.

  • Natasha

He is 100% correct! That is a grown man speaking right there. I NEVER want to go back to the hood; only if I am visiting or volunteering in the community baby!!!!

  • The Bear

I just don’t understand how one gets rich talking about what happens in the hood and then once he makes it to the mountain top tries to forget about the hood.

I’m not saying you should continue glorifying the evils that happen in the hood but you have a responsibility to use your wealth to improve conditions for mankind.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are currently competing to see who can give more of their fortunes to help the poor and you mean to tell me you can’t help the brothers still stuck sellin dope on the same corner you so famously claim to have worked back in the day?

To whom much is given, much is expected…

    I’m just sayin…

  • hOTdAMN

Jay, you are too damn old to be sagging…seriously. If your off the streets, making millions, heading companies…please dress like a man with a plan and not a boy with a toy. Your an Icon, not an ion, please lead the way.

  • The Bear

We are focusing on the wrong thing. Its not about “getting out” of the hood. Our target has to be to TRANSFORM the hood into a functional and safe community that nurtures and brings the best out of its seed.

Whoaa *I just had a Barack moment*

  • The Bear

    @ The Grundle

Ok, So there’s people in your new nieghborhood that like to eat Ostrich eggs. Soo???

Is there another race of people on the planet more self-centered yet self-hating than we are. If we really loved ourselves and each other and respected God the hood would be the sweetest place to reside in this whole world. Hoods are already usually located on the best real estate; conveniently close to the business centers. Why do you think the city was built there in the first place???? Cause its the best land!!!

  • mizz_undastood

    @Bear

Unfortunately thats easier said than done. People have been making attempts to transform the hood for years. Not happening anytime soon. The ‘hood’ is just another one of society’s issues that will continue to be over-looked. I’m in Houston- and what they consider ‘transforming’ the hood out here is building a new park or a new school in the area and labeling it MLK as if that’s going to bring about any kind of change to the community. So sad, but true.

  • mizz_undastood

    @ Queen Dee

I guess you deserve a round of applause because you read his comments before everyone else. Take a bow.

  • The Bear

    @ INOCENTbiSTANDR

Its not whether or not you go back. Its what you do when you go back. I would never diss the place where I was born and raised like that. You don’t hear Dominicans dissin the D.R., Cubans dissing CUBA, or even Haitians dissing Haiti (Look at Wyclef!!) They all send money home to help make things better.

But as EZ said… “the boyz in tha hood are always hard; come talkin that trash and they’ll…”

WE ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO ONLY LOOK OUT FOR SELF AND DO NOT HELP EACH OTHER!!!!!

And that’s why most “successful” black women can’t find a decent husband to raise a family with and none of the money in the hood stays in the hood. Everybody thinks they’re an Island but…

“I got news for you” *singing in my Al Green falsetto*

NO MAN (or woman) IS AN ISLAND PEOPLE!!! Grab a dictionary and look up the word “community”.

  • mizz_undastood

As far as Jay-Z goes…he used to rap about all of the dope he sold and ish; if this was true, he sounds just like an Uncle Tom; first he helped to contribute to the growing drug problem in the black community and now he wants nothing more to do with them.

  • BlackBeauty

Jay looks like a sick ass old man trying to dress young. Why is he looking so thin and sick?

  • The Bear

    @ mizz_undastood

Transforming the hood can only be done one mind at a time. From my experience most of the people in the hood are very fine human beings, then there are many who are misguided because they are followers who just want to “be down”. And then there are a few psychopaths who pretty much keep the place on lock.

  • cantstopwontstop

    @ Bear…

the only one who’s making sense on this board…

I live in the hood, by choice. More accurately I live in a predominantly black neighborhood in the inner city that within walking distance of four Chinese restaurants, two pizza parlors, two Dollars stores, a Blockbuster, a Radio Shack, the produce truck and two churches. Hood enough for you?

Yet this very same neighborhood also has a public tennis court that is kept up and maintained, a private, country club level pool club, and has college professors, yuppies, buppies, hippies and ghetto folks living side by side. My neighbor to the left’s son is a state senator. My neighbor to the right is the chief of staff for another politician. My neighbors down the street who just had a baby are both doctors.

So, although I completely understand Jay-Z’s point and he’s absolutely correct, you can’t stereotype every neighborhood. There is positivity and productivity in many “hoods.”

  • The Bear

    @ cantstopwontstop

And I would go as far as to say that the music put out by Jay-z and others have done more harm than good to the hood. How??? By further eroding an already compromised moral fabric, glorifying sex and violence and worst of all materialism which influences young poor brothers to break laws to get what Jay-z says they should have because “money ain’t a thing” right?

So after you influence so much destructive behavior in the hood you move far away to count your stacks and tell the press about how you no longer associate with the hood.

  • The Bear

    @ cantstopwontstop

And is it just me or have you noticed that Chinese seem to be the only people who own small restaurants in the hood. They seem to do just fine financially and send plenty money back to their hood in China.

  • Nik

    bougie nicca!

  • girlzluvme

nik needs to read the article again..it didnt sound like some1 that forgot where they came for..at least not to me

  • Ara

What he says is true, but some people, even when they become very successful and wealthy are still trapped in that hood mentality……thats why there still is no substitute for education. Education and wealth together is a powerful combination.

  • DIANA

I don’t like Jay-z but I must say he is 100% CORRECT on the “street cred” thing . Why woUld you waNt to go back to the hood if you made it out? People live their because they are economically devalued and have no choice . I do belive she should help improve you hood once you become “of status” but why still walk around tough? . That is why you pay bodyguards ?All these nigg** is studio gangsters . I think Young jeezy is one of the few who actually live the “street life “

  • Ara

When you know better, you do better…… he has grown, and broaded his horizons.

I’m not advocating anything illegal but a lot of these families such as the Kennedys etc. started out involved in illegal activities, that is how they started their wealth. They also were smart enough to have a vision and eventually became completely legit.

  • Ara

    @ The Bear

I agree with what you’re saying, hood is a state of mind. You can live on Park Ave, or in a million dollar mansion and still be hood.

  • The Bear

What Jay is saying here personifies hood mentality. Anybody who takes what society has to offer and does not put anything back is guilty of having a hood mentality. When Jay was poor he claims to have sold dope in the hood to make money. Then he starts rapping and selling records that helped further shape the mindset of the ghetto youth and got mega rich doing it. Then he started selling overpriced clothes and shoes to people in the hood and got even richer. Now he is not advocating ideas that will uplift the mindset of the people in the hood but rather celebrating the fact that he can eat caviar(yukk) @ the Lanesborough.

Bill Gates is trying to celebrate when he uses his money to eradicate malaria from the worlds poor countries. Why can’t Jay celebrate when you use some of your dough to eliminate drugs from your old neighborhood, or at least your block, or at least your old building instead of dissing your birthplace. Now thats noble.

  • The Bear

In that respect Jay-z is more hood than Plies.

Because at least Plies is tryin to help kids from his hood who’s daddys are in jail pay for college. That’s not

  • The Bear

And all of you on here who came out of the hood and say you never want anything to do with the hood again are displaying the deepest form of hood mentality.

  • Ara

    @ Meeko From Detroit

You sound like you’re proud of the pathetic, subhuman conditions that are going on up there. That’s the type of sorry ish that black people are trying to rise above, not glorify it like it is something to be proud of because it’s not.

  • K-ten

“I’m keeping it ‘hood.” I’m like, “Why? What do you mean? No one’s there by choice! You’re in the hood, by choice?”

Cause its the best land!!!

you are really right bear we all need to pray especially the hood

  • Ara

    @ He We Go again

The Hamptons? I’ve seen some of those houses in the Hamptons, some are older structures that seem to be wheather worn, but they are on the water and waterfront property is always more valuable. What makes that area so prestigious is the atmosphere and the caliber of people who live and frequent there, if Pookie and Shanana were running around there it would be called “hood” or “ghetto” too.

You are so right, part of the reason black communities become “hood”, “ghetto” or run down is because as soon as some blacks get a little money they run off to live in a white neighborhood ( they really don’t want you there) instead of staying and improving their own communities.

A lot of the houses and architectural structures that are in some of the older communities are beautiful and really better built than a lot of the newer structures. We (blacks) have no vision, if it ain’t new we just can’t see the potential beauty.

But I’ll tell you what, whites have vision, and the very same neighborhoods that we flee from, they move in buy up the properties, renovate, clean up the trash, plant grass, flowers, shrubs etc. soon other positive people move in and now this is the hot neighborhood to live in, the same one that you ran away from. Ex. Harlem in New York, beautiful Brownstones with great architectural detail that’s hard to find today. Same thing with the Row houses in Washington DC. There are no bad neighborhoods, it’s the bad people in the neighborhoods.

  • US !

You will never be out of the HOOD because the HOOD is IN YOU. WE made sure of that before any of you were even thought of. So YOU CAN THANK SOME OF YOUR ANCESTORS for KEEPING THE PLAN ALIVE. APPARENTLY it ONLY TAKES A FEW. The ONES who OPPOSE, well “WE” MAKE SURE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. And You would be amazed how many of YOU are WILLING to aid US in our goal to RID US of the UNDESIRABLE.

You PLANT the right SEED at the RIGHT TIME the TREE PRACTICALLY GROWS ON IT’S OWN. Some of our little seedlings have even spawned a GENERATION that are becoming more and more DETERMINED to carry out our plan FOR US. An UNSTOPPABLE force that will surely do more for our cause than any MILLION of US.

It’s amazing what you can accomplish by waving THE CARCOUS of a ROTTING GAZELLE in front OF A PRIDE of HUNGRY LIONS with NO INTENTIONS of EVER FEEDING THEM. REMOVING THE ABILITY TO HUNT FOR THEMSELVES. WATCHING THEM TEAR EACHOTHER LIMB from LIMB solely for the RIGHT to FEED is an amazing sight indeed. Till the last one stands, PROUD and TALL, REVELING IN IT’S ACCOMPLISHMENT ONLY NEVER TO BE FED. BEING LEFT TO BEG for whatever SCRAPS WE DECIDE TO THROW IT’S WAY.

Although what we hadn’t expected was that SOME of OUR OWN would eventually fall behind. Becoming victims of some of the very same tenants of the PLAN we set in place for YOU. RACISM, SELF HATRED, COMPLACENCY, IGNORANCE, POVERTY, HOPELESSNESS, FALSE SENSE OF MODESTY, APATHY, just to name a few, or just being too WEAK to CLAIM what’s RIGHTFULLY THEIRS. This will HAVE TO BE CORRECTED of course, there will be NO ROOM FOR THE WEAK OF MIND, BODY or SOUL in the FUTURE of OUR PLAN.

We also hadn’t expected the TREE TO BEGIN TO GROW so fast and OUT OF CONTROL while our heads were turned. Seems a little PRUNING may be in order. Hmm!, Seems, We’ll have to come see MR. CARTER.

So for the REST OF YOU carry on and HOLD on tight TO THE TENANTS OF THE PLAN we so patiently INSTILLED IN YOUR ANCESTORS your time will come soon enough. And don’t think for one minute, TELLING YOU THIS, ISN’T PART OF THE PLAN.

  • Just Sayin

There is nothing good about the hood if you from there and you are blessed with the opportunity to make it out – keep it moving because the people you left behind are not half as happy to see you as you think they “would be” when you come for a visit. their best memories are when “they” was doing what they thought was something. No way you make any kind of real money and go back and think you spreading love if you must keep in touch – that is what the telephone is for so at least you dont have to see their fake smile and the knife cant come through the wire.

  • tonihyll

I understand and agree with what Jay is saying, however, he should also place emphasis on using NAM “newly acquired money” (especially for people who came from nothing)to build their future, their kids future, and their kids’ kids future and so on….

As a black female I’ve seen way too many black men and women make money only to spend it on clothing jewelry, cars and other superficial indulgences and later have nothing to show for it. Have bling is fine but uplifting your community as well so more and more blacks can have bling is even better. Maybe one day we won’t be categorized as the minority especially where money and status is concerned. Jay I see what your were trying to say but what about being finally smart and secure as well? What about the flip side of that?

  • Jay-ZMakesSense

No wonder Jay-Z is wealthy. He makes a lot of sense. Who wants to stay down if they can move up. The sad thing about these rappers is they can’t seem to know that they must leave that type of hoodlife behind. Going back there only means you are going to end up, in jail, dead or broke. These rappers beat the odds and end up in worst shape than what they came from. If you keep that hood mentality than you deserve what comes your way. They should try to do something positive and help get these young people out of self destruction, but they can’t do that because most of them can’t seem to get themselves out of self destruction, drug use, incarceration, baby mamas, uneducated, etc. A very sad situation. Wake up my people, please before it is too late.

  • Black Intellectual

What Jay is saying shouldn’t be newsworthy. It’s obvious that it makes no sense to act like a person with very few opportunities in economically depressed neighborhoods.

What isn’t obvious, though, is the difference between remaining loyal to black ethnic social institutions, black culture, and the US working class as opposed to the white power structure and the owners of capital. Every rapper that comes from the hood should remain loyal to their people. However, doing so has nothing to do with acting like a petty criminal. Rather, the rapper should use his good fortune to better speak to and represent his people. Malcolm X is a prime example of a person who left the hood but didn’t betray his people. 50 Cent is a prime example of a person who who left the hood but has betrayed his people.

Jay said what needed to be said. I mean really the only rappers still in the hood are the one hit wonders.50′s out in Connecticut and I think Fat Joe is in long island. He’s not selling out he’s speaking the truth. That was the whole purpose of getting a record deal so you could leave the hood. So who ever is like Jay’s a sell out ya’ll are young and ignorant and don’t know better

  • kigali Weaves R4 trannies

Jay Z is being a bit disingenuous. This is a man who shot his own brother over a chain. He made lots of money off of the hood and now he wants to distance himself. Its a bit like a cocaine dealing making millions and then decides to go straight.

Sorry brother but you could have given the hood the finger decades ago. Instead of selling that coke, you could have worked at McDonalds. You wouldnt have had as much money but you would still have your self respect. People all over this country do crap jobs, live, in the hood, and still manage to keep it lawful and legal. They dont need the hood to keep themselves feed and they would rather be broke than do dirt.

You dont have to keep it hood but you should have been keeping it RIGHT from jump. This is America.

He can say what he wants after he has made his millions. You have people swimming to this country on the Rio Grande, going through desert, not speaking a work of english but mangage to do legally work, albeit working illegally. Negro please.

  • Power2Power

I hear you J. No one wants to live in the hood after finally getting out of it or do they? Makes no sense to me but to take it a bit further what has he done to help people in the hood? I am a little bit disappointed that all he and Beyonce do is take every penny they can from the hood but then do not associate themselves with the hood. Who the heck do they think buy their music? It sure isn’t the rich and famous. It is the hood. I consider Jay and Bey to be 2 of the greatest entertainers of all times but not so great individuals to humanity. I haven’t met them personally but if they did a lot of outstanding things in their former communities seemingly we would hear about it. Now, I have to give Diddy credit because he is always helping out financially. He creates a lot of jobs for others so in my opinion he is a great humanitarian. I know that one or two people cannot save the world but they can surely help one by one. I am happy for Jay and Bey success but since they have been Blessed by God with their fortunes why don’t they lower the cost of their clothing lines, do a free concert occasionally or just make a difference in someone else’s life besides their own. I think we all have a duty on this earth to be servants to others in some form or fashion because God doesn’t need us for anything else.

  • Negrodamus Believes(Condo and Coupe is a must)

  • The Misses

To Max please check your facts before you state what MR. CARTER HAS AND HASN’T DONE TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY.

Y’all are forgetting about the people living in places where they can only afford to live in the hood…even though they making good money…..

where i live I know people living in a two income household grossing 120,000 a year struggling so its about being financially smart.

We as a people need to get financially smart….we live outside of our means and try to live a glorified hood….cats in the hood would rather put rims on their car than invest their money.

I know people who aint got no job or a place to stay but they come up with enough money to take a trip to the bahamas or buy a coach purse……

And anyone can be broke i.e. if you make a millon dollars and you spent a million dollars you’re in the same predicament as the person making 1000 dollars and spending a 1000 dollars

  • cantstopwontstop

    @crustbet:

Thanks for posting that….that was way raw and real and you’re absolutely right. I see it every day…yes, I live in the hood, with central air and neighbors who are black professionals (and asian and white) and have solid family values. i have a three bedroom home and a garage – space that i could never afford elsewhere. i feel safe her and it’s nice to be able to get something to eat any time of night. i also think that the kids on our block see positive black role models who still live in their neighborhood. no, its not perfect. but its diverse and i enjoy that. But please believe as far as one poster said above, the yt’s are trying to take the hood back. Affordable housing (given what a house in the burbs cost) less maintenance, public transportation, access to city centers, believe me…right now is the best time if you live in an inner city to come on back and be a part of the change.

I have to say one thing about Jigga, many people have mentioned that he and Beyonce don’t do too much for their own. I think that’s true to a point, for instance look at what Brad Pitt did for folks in N.O. with his green housing contest.

However, Beyonce does have the “Survivor” foundation that did build an apartment building and community center in Houston. I know Jigga gave the water blah blah, but if you know anything about East Africa, they didn’t know who the hell or Beyonce was, and I’m sure they were just there to publicize what was already being done. But at least they went.

  • flawda

    @ cantstopwontstop

How in the hell would you know what they do with their money, some people run their mouth to get attention about what they do and some dont. Who gave atleast 500,000 to Katrina, who have a mil to Sean Bell’s family, fresh water to Africa, etc. Jay and Beyonce barely speak about their personal life in their music much less public so what makes you think they would try and get credit for donations.

    @ The Bear

I just don’t understand how one gets rich talking about what happens in the hood and then once he makes it to the mountain top tries to forget about the hood.

I’m not saying you should continue glorifying the evils that happen in the hood but you have a responsibility to use your wealth to improve conditions for mankind.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are currently competing to see who can give more of their fortunes to help the poor and you mean to tell me you can’t help the brothers still stuck sellin dope on the same corner you so famously claim to have worked back in the day?

To whom much is given, much is expected…
