Great Music Receives Great Recognition: Sade’s New Album Moves 502K Units In First Week

Don’t call it a comeback:

Last week Sade, the Nigerian-born singer whose song “Smooth Operator” has been a radio staple for a quarter-century, released “Soldier of Love” (Epic), her first album in 10 years, and it zoomed past all competition. It reached No. 1 with a remarkable 502,000 sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan, a better debut week than Jay-Z, U2 and Britney Spears had for their latest albums.

“Soldier of Love” has received strong reviews. But the album’s success also points to the consumer power and loyalty of older listeners, who helped make Susan Boyle’s album “I Dreamed a Dream” (Syco Music/Columbia) the second-best selling album of 2009. No. 1 was “Fearless” Taylor Swift (Big Machine).

“It’s easier to reach an older, more traditional consumer by using the old means of promotion,” said Carl Mello, buyer for Newbury Comics, a music and media chain in New England. “You can build awareness with younger people, but fewer of them will actually put their hand in their wallets and pay for it.”

“Soldier of Love,” Sade’s first No. 1 album in 24 years, runs contrary to prevailing sales trends. Her previous album, “Lovers Rock,” sold 370,000 copies in its first week in 2000. Since then overall album sales have dropped by more than 50 percent, and most artists have gotten used to the pattern of gradual sales erosion; Sade’s sales — at least for this first week — have increased significantly.

Sade is a straight beast!!! Kudos to her for making it rain all over the music game at the age of 51.

  • Sydney™ (Lucille Clifton)

I bought the very last copy on sale at Target over the weekend — It was sold out at the other locations I called in the area. It’s that hot. Go, Sade! I would love to see her perform in person. :)

Yes, the hunger for quality music is out there, and people are more than willing to support it.

reached No. 1 with a remarkable 502,000 sales
    ________________________________________

She accomplished this with NO a$$ shakin’ and no silly a$$ gimmicks!!!

But truth be told, it was because of the demographic… It’s the same reason why Susan Boyle sold so many records in her first week out also…

The older and mature demographic has been conditioned to go out and purchase the CD of an artist they like whereas the youngin’s with their limited funds and ability to get music illegally are less likely to go out and support their artist the same/right way…

Either way, Congrats I LOVE when my people achieve success in their endeavors!!!

  • Caramel Cat

My husband and I were just listening to Lover’s Rock and Love Deluxe before picking up this new one, her music is cla.ssic and timeless, she is a true artist….

  • Sydney™ (Lucille Clifton)

Also, if you want to receive e-mail updates about the album and tour, her official site is sade.com. I’m waiting to see where she’s going to be performing. I missed her last tour. :(

  • Caramel Cat

Thanks for that info Syd, that will be a concert I will not miss….

  • Sydney™ (Lucille Clifton)

    Hey Caramel :)

Yeah, girl, when she goes on tour, if you don’t pick up your tickets early, you’re out of luck. I had no doubt that her CD was going to move quickly. It also took me weeks to find Maxwell’s CD. It kept selling out.

  • http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/blog/imgpop.php?img=http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/client_images/kanyewest/3164_b0e5bda4c46c8d17b6cf25713d3170ac.jpg Slide Like A Fresh Pair of Gators

Oh yeah, I like how they went about putting this project out too…

It was very odd considering how they put out music today = the artist releases a single and then you have to wait MONTHS before the album comes out… They basically did it old school style where they put the single out and a few weeks later the album was in the stores…

That first single was dope too, she did what she does and didn’t try to change her sound to sound like what’s out today… She just tweaked it & updated it perfectly and the end result was very good…

The cream always rises to the top!!!

  • Sydney™ (Lucille Clifton)

Actually, I think the U.S. tour dates are going to be announced very soon. I just found this online: “With her first album in nine years scheduled for worldwide release on Feb. 8 and 9, Sade is looking to first tour Europe and then the US in support of the new album. It will be her first tour in nine years as well.”

  • SASHA FLOP

it’s great to see REAL artists shine without having to dance around in leotards surrounded by trannys LOL…

  • Caramel Cat

    @Sydney

Yeah, I hear you, I plan to get those tickets as soon as they go on sale. For some reason I had no problems finding her CD or Maxwell’s CD when they came out…it likely depends on the part of town I live in, lots of young college students…lol…

  • Plagueis The Wise

Sade is my mother’s favorite artist. I grew in a house where smooth operator was in heavy rotation. I bought this cd for my mom and I put it on my Ipod so I can listen to it in the car. Timeless voice and beauty.

  • SASHA FLOP

    @why?

LOL, nice spin. people are mentioning beyonce because they’re showing you that beyonce is nothing when you have REAL artists like Sade. the only thing she’s doing “right” is that she has her daddy running the show. Sade doesn’t need that, and never has needed that.

  • bria

This article is kinda stupid. You don’t need to over market or over saturate someone like Sade her and her band their work speaks for itself. It’s like Whitney Houston she is sellign out arenas and you barely see that on blogs because it’s not necessary. We bought music in the old day off of sound not sight and that is the problem today. Maybe now record companies will stop trying to market everything to 12 year olds and realize they are missing the boat on the actual people that will buy music and not steal it off the internet.

  • QUEEN

    CONGRATS

  • b’more

    @bria

very well said. if record companies want to pull the music industry out of the sales slump it’s in now, they will start catering to the older crowd, who actually buys CD’s, instead of the younger crowd who wouldn’t know good music if it slapped them in the face.

  • QUEEN TRUTH

    WOOOOW

  • TOPNOTCHKILLA

I ALWAYS LIKED/LOVED HER MUSIC,SADE DOES IT FOR ME.9, YEARS SINCE THE LAST ALBUM,TIME IS MOVING SWIFTLY!

  • QUEEN TRUTH

DATS WONDERFUL! DATS HOW U KNO, U R A TRUE LEGEND. SADE BEEN GON FOR HOW LONG???? AND SHE CAME BACK BETTER THAN OUR FAVORITE RAPPERS & SINGERS. CONGRATS SADE…… (hmmm wonder if beyonce can do the same)THINK NOT!

  • rain

she way better than that homwrecking pizza face alicia keys

  • peaches

U GO GIRL!!!! Old school is still alive!!!! And as soon as the music industry and the awards show stop letting hip hop and rap takeover and recognize that: IF IT WASN’T FOR OLD SCHOOL MUSIC, THEN THERE WOULD NOT BE NEW SCHOOL!!!! and maybe we could get back to the way REAL MUSIC WAS AND IS!!!!!

  • http://Bossip.com Eddy

Her debut song was not that good.

  • mouth

Love Sade, who doesn’t? But why get at Beyonce’? Evidently she’s doing what she’s here to do, you all can’t keep her out your mouth. I think that’s the point. Now go and buy HER cd again…

  • Mizz Frost

She’s 51?!! Damn! I absolutely LOVE Sade!! She’s amazingly talented and inspiring! As Madea would say “Halleluyerr!!”

Make it rain on em, baby girl! Sade is the bizness and I absolutely LOVE her new music. It’s on a poppin!

  • AnonymousGal

Rihanna sounds like a d*mn wounded moose when she sings. At least Beyonce has some talent, but even she won’t be talked about. Go on youtube and visit some old school (70s and 80s) music and people of all ages LOVE it! Everyone desires for the days of real music to return.

Sade is beautiful and talents. Trust, she’ll be around for a long time.

  • AnonymousGal

Excuse the typos. Moving far along.

  • the one

Actually Sade is for anyone that can appreciate good music. My niece is 11 and she does not like Justin Beeber or Molly or Rhianna… She’s into all the funk and Motown of old. She asked her mother the other day if she could get her the Sade album. It’s all about what you’ve been raised on to appreciate.

  • You Smell Me??

When I went to pick up my copy, there were only 4 copies left.

Good to have authentic adult music. Is there any adult music left in the world?

Or do we all have to rewind 25-30 years to get it?

  • http://aol ebonieladi

What’s really being said about artists like Rihanna,Beyonce, Gaga and the like is that these artists will not go down in music history as legends. They will be fads. Legends have classic songs. None of these artists have songs that will be classics 10, 20 or 30 years from now. And please don’t let anyone say Single Ladies. It’s no I Will Survive.

  • Newlife

THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL A TALENTED WOMEN AND BY AS AN OLDER LOVER TO MUSIC/MUSICIAN’S I WAS SO ANTICIPATING FOR THIS ALBUM AND THIS IS DEF A PURCHASE I HAVE NO REGRETS OR THOUGHT TWICE OF SPENDING.

  • http://youtube.com/ICANDIGUOUT STEF

love all the comments, with exception to folk knockin’ beyonce (who will go down in music history as a legend, ebonieladi ;-) ). im happy for sade and it does go to show that when an artist has that solid fan base that will wait for u, you’ll always do well. maxwell talked about that too cause his career has been compared to sade’s…u mightve already known that…lol

  • http://aol ebonieladi

What will be legendary about her? Inquiring minds want to know.

  • http://aol ebonieladi

Again, legends have classic songs. Honestly, will anyone still be listening to her songs, 10 years from now? That’s the mark of legends.

  • http://aol ebonieladi

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not knocking Beyonce. If i was I’d be calling her names and saying she has no talent, which is not true. She is very talented, however she is not in a class of artists who are or will be legends. That’s being brutally honest, not bashing or hating. There is a difference.

  • Jenny

My God I love Sade! Always have, always will. And by the way, why am I NOT surprised to see Beyonce’s name brought up ONCE AGAIN, on a post that has NOTHING to do with her. Why don’t y’all haters just come on out and admit y’all are secretely obsessed with Bey, cause this getting downright ridiculous right here.

  • Somali Ninga

BeYAWNce, RItard, and Lady Gargoyle aint got nothin on my gurl Sade!! Keep doin ur thing gurl!!

  • http://bossip.com YES, they deserved to die, and i hope they burn in hell!!

I would love to know why people keep bringing up Beyonce’s name as well, because it does not belong anywhere near anything that has to do with Sade. Sade is a living legend. 500,000 sold in the first week??!!! That is incredible, and all with out the so called “hype machine” behind her. Bey, Rih, A. Keys, nor any other pop “tart” out there now, will NEVER be on the level of Helen Folasade Adu.

  • http://CLANIER@TBSDDP.COM C LANIER

Yes Sade is a legend. I never said she wasn’t and for the record I have most of her music the older stuff and I love it. To be realisic let’s see what happens months from now and when the next award season come up. As we all know some of the most talented are not even considered for nominantions they are always passed over for the more pop/r&b commericial talent. There is no sense of arguing back and forth because you all should know how the music industry is nowadays.

  • http://bossip.com YES, they deserved to die, and i hope they burn in hell!!

Think about it, since Sade first came out, we’ve seen Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Prince all in their primes. So for Sade to STILL be in the game 25 years later and come out number one, shows you what REAL talent can accomplish. I really don’t believe anyone out there now can achieve this greatness, not even Beyonce. We should really appreciate Sade while we have her, unlike the way Michael was treated while he was here.

  • http://bossip.com too cute

glad for her, finally someone out there, putting out music worth listening to,compared to the crap we have now by these female artist

  • Shana Boo

dang its like she never ages..i guess its that AFRICAN blood running through her lol

  • Shay*

Everybody get tired of the same ol’ mess. This is something refreshing and soulful. Go Sade!

  • chaka1

Go head Sade! Show them how real women run things…

  • Keisha

I got my copy. Well…my boyfriend has my copy.

  • jennifer

Luv Sade!! I will definately be purchase this album, as I have all her previous albums as well! Thanks Sade for giving us the kiss of life! when it comes to music, I cherish the day, glad this smooth operator is back! Is it a crime you made us wait so long? Sade you give us the sweetest Taboo! Nothing can come between us!

  • Hope4more

See that is what I love, good music and a good singer. You don’t have to rob others of their style, sell your soul, steal music, copyright others, pop the coochie—-That is getting back to the music!!!!!

  • Dirty Diana…Let Me Be ♪

this is how it’s done. i was just thinking about her today and wondering how her album sales are doing since she hasn’t been in the public eye too much since it’s release. I hope the young people are taking notess and memorizing them. Imagine, she’s not all over the place promoting and promoting and sold half a million albums in just 1 week. I hope she comes to my city for a concert because i sure as hell will not miss it.

“I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I’m not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand,” lead singer Sade said of the record.

What a freakin’ breath of fresh air!! Sade don’t wait another 10 years…the music industry is in sad shape.

  • Q-T

I LOVE Sade and I have ALL of her music! I’m so happy for her!!!

  • Ronnie

In the article it said that Sade new album outsold Britney’s latest album “Circus”, that is FALSE, Circus debuted at number-one on the US Billboard 200, moving over 505,000 units in its first week. I don’t mean to be the b*tch but Im a Britney fan and I had to get that corrected!

  • Money First

Wow maybe this will finally convince the music industry to make real music again and the radio stations will also get off the bullcrap they are playing also. I have nothing against the youth because I am still in that range myself but the ones that are between 17-22 yrs of age are literally destroying the music game right now!!

  • NEEKYUK

Got the new album.. Babyfather is just beyond words! It’s funny she doesn’t have the best (conventionally best) voice, but I could listen to her sing forever.

  • !!!!!

    YES U GO SADE.

  • Prince

That is what you call a true artist!!

  • In all truth

Everyone is longing for real music. The music/entertainment industry went downhill, to the lowest. At one point, you get used to it, and forget what real music is all about. So, when artists like Sade, Maxwell, come back, then you realize that, all I’ve been listening to, is bunch of garbage.

Helen Folasade Adu, welcome back, and thanks for staying true to what real talent and music should really be about.

  • Fedup

GO Sade! I absolutely loves her. The album is great I got it the minute it came out. Sade shown them youngins what it is to carry yourself respect on stage and don’t have to dress half nakes to sell a record! Thank you Sade! She brought back R&B!

  • Fedup

Ms. Adu is like a breath of fresh air. Hopefully, music with some depth is going to be on the radar with the rest of the other stuff monopolizing the air waves.
