Peep this teaser for “The Princess and the Frog.” It’s Disney/Pixar’s first motion picture featuring a Black heroine. On the real, we didn’t expect much from that warped mega-corp, but when that freakin’ minstrel fire-fly popped up with the scraggly grill, our suspicions were confirmed. F**k Disney.

    Victim victim victim. Get over it.

  • $m♥K.E.Y.

    Clearly those of you who feel that some of us

    (black folk) are being to sensitive and over

    reacting on this matter lack knowledge about black

    minstrels throughout this country’s early and

    modern history. Unfortunately most peoples “Black

    History Education” includes Dr. Martin Luther King

    and a synopsis on slavery.

  • http://deleted BadNewsBrown

    as much as that firefly was offensive, im okay with the movie as a whole

    shiiiit W.Disney was a freakin Nazi sympathizer, so they came a long way.

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    Classic Disney though.

  • Kompton’s Kutie

    As for the firefly….his speech is of the New Orleans dialect and we would really have to watch the whole movie, maybe he’s missing teeth for a reason?! Who knows. Also, there are white Disney movies where not all characters have the best characteristics(think back)….Don’t just blame it on the fact that it’s a Black cartoon.

  • ThatTouchOfPink

    I know plenty about minstrelsy, and I don’t think this was it.

    I figure the movie takes place in New Orleans in the south, the bedrock of the old fables & Uncle Remus tales.

    The firefly to me symbolizes the old creole/cajun grand dad, missing some teeth (BFD), narating a tale. My family is based out of Louisiana, and there are plenty of these types of characters in my fam, and we look up to them and honor them.

    So if a character done in this style is seen as minstrelsy, that is a slap in the face to many of our own family members.

    Minstrelsy to me is blackface, white paint on the lips, softshoe cakewalk type stuff . . . I don’t see how the firefly symbolizes that at all.

  • DanaDane

    I loooove the fact that it’s set in New Orleans, ANR did a pretty good job with the accent…7th Ward FOREVER! And that firefly looks a MESS…

  • Color Me Beauty

    Kesha and Smokey, I co-sign!

    I thought it was cute and didn’t see anything wrong with it. Black folks so quick to make a issue out of everything. It’s not that serious

  • Godsdivinegift

    i thought it was cute! as for the firefly, i fell out when i saw those teeth. i dont see what the big deal

  • african_4_eva

    Well….

    I thought that it was cute (minus the semi-toothless firefly with a MASSIVE lightbulb for a donk)

    …am I wrong?

  • Juicy R

    it should not have took Disney this long to come out with a black character.

  • organoize

    And despite all that…I wanna see the movie! I showed this trailer to one of my friends from N.O. and he has ppl that talk just like the lightning bug…..and anyone who has spent time in New Orleans in a place other than Bourbon Street…would know that white and black ppl sound like that.

  • brdnbutta

    This is a fly with a Cajun accent… He’s probably from on the bayou somewhere… relax people.

    @ Darren. That firefly doesn’t have a deep south accent. I don’t know where you reside, where your people are from, etc. but no one in U.S. speaks like people from Louisiana. I suggest you if funds permit travel a bit and open your ears so that you can recognize a Cajun/Creole accent when you hear one and you might learn something too. New Orleans is a beautiful city and the people are lovely as well

  • $m♥K.E.Y.

    this movie can go 50/50 about it. Im sure there

    are folks who will be seeing red and othes who

    will enjoy it for whats its worth. The firefly

    seems a bit “iffy” It was real unexpected. My jaw did drop on him.

  • $m♥K.E.Y.

    *others

  • Ed

    Somebody needs to let Disney know that they’re wrong. Why is he missing teeth? Are most black people missing teeth? Not that I know of. The princess part is great.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    LOL!

    I fell outta my chair laughing, Its obvious that princess is in the deep south somewhere and that no teeth, stepin’ fetchit firefly just kills it! And you deep south n*ggas/n*ggettes think i make this sh*t up?

    I’ll be the first in line to see it when it comes out!

  • TEEDY

    I live in New Orleans and none of my Uncles have missing teeth and if they did dentures are only a dentist away. Crack-heads are not cute and should not be in Disney movies. Also that Cajun accent is played people have not spoken that way in New Orleans since the 50′s. That woman on Big Brother gets on my nerves too.

  • Serafina

    I’m from New Orleans and I think the accent is charming and funny and it’ll be amazing to take my kids to see something thats based from our hometown.

    I fail to see how ONE little bug has some mindless fools thinking that the entire movie and/or Disney are being racist. Some people find fault with every little thing that non-blacks do and excuse the behavior of blacks that really make all blacks look bad, in the mind of some.

    It’s a cartoon! Does everything made with blacks have to be shown in a good light? There’s no one in the entire state of Louisiana that speaks like that?

    Once again, I fail to see how one little cartoon makes the entire race look bad. Or makes fun of the entire race. Or make Disney look horrible.

    What Im most concerned about is why they’ve waited so long to make a movie like this! We’ve had the white princesses, we’ve even had a movie with a Chinese lead female character and a Native American one too. It would have been amazing if all of the little black girls has someone to look up too. Until now.

  • http://www.google.com Man, I just don’t care

    This was a poor decision on someone’s part at Disney. With the history your company has (Tar Baby anyone) why would you want to have anything that reflects poorly in any way?

    Is she a “swamp” princess? I don’t understand the intended accents relevance.

  • glok9n

    ABSOLUTELY BLKS ARE SOCIALLY AND MENTALLY DEAD FOR ALL OF THE AFOREMENTONED REASONS… EMBRACING THESE CHARACTORS AND BUYING INTO THEIR OWN DOWNFALL!!1

  • Ermy Erm

    Um, I saw the clip and I dont think it’s racist. Just because the lightening bug was snagga-toofed and talked silly? EVERYONE at Disney isnt racist. They drew the black princess beautifully as they HAVE done every other Disney princess. I would have taken offense if they had drawn her with buckwheat shots in her head or given her POOR english as in UNEDUCATED. I’m not upset about it.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    @ Serafina,

    C’mon now you’ve got to be kidding!

    So Disney decides to make a cartoon featuring a black princess but then decides to throw every deep south stereotype into the movie for good measure and you dont see the problem with this? Did they have to make her a princess in New Orleans? whats wrong with the east or west coast, or even Africa or the Caribbean? At least in africa she coulda run into the LION King and that coulda been a tie-in.

    If i go see this movie and you have even one picture of a black person eating watermelon, chicken or dancing a jig, or has an exaggerated accented southern drawl im gonna write a letter to Disney and ask “where are the fat b*tches with weaves and saggy t*tties” If youre gonna stereotype for the world to see, you may as well go all the way! as i understand Soldier boy has a speaking part so you wont be able to understand sh8t anyway.

  • Dapro11

    Disney should have done this movie years ago. I’m taking my little girls to see this movie. I’m tired of skipping over the White Princess at the store. You know how many times i had to race past the Disney isle in the store because none of the characters look like my kids!

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    Lets see how many white asian and mexican kids ask for “the princess and the frog” merchandise or Halloween costumes. i bet their parents tell them its all sold out just because the princess was black! thats how disney will know if they made a mistake or not. Also lets hear some of those songs that will be in the movie, heavy accents etc.

  • Rebekah

    n e one upset by this is clearly bein oversensitive…every disney movie has funny looking characters…i saw a beautiful black princess and this is great for the young kids.

  • glok9n

    It is the removal of the decadent slave mentality.It is black nationalism, it to is the utilization of this problem our culture , embraces these sambo type cartoons,there messages in these cartoons and they are targeting our children.KKK, ha ! they arent in white sheetz the have degrees and are branch all over society, as judges lawyers actors producers etc.. and you foolish niggrz buy into this crap,Wake the fuk up folks stop buying into your own downfall…now what are you as a parent gonna do ?

  • fabulosity

    L M A O. i am sooooooooo mad at this.

  • tooty

    who said the firefly was supposed to represent black people just b/c the princess is black. we need to quit with this stuff, black folks. we are we so often offended by the dumbest things.

  • glok9n

    WHITE PPL KNOW HOW TO FOOL YOU NIGGRZ EVERYTIME AND SOME OF YOU ARE TOO DUMB TO KNOW WHEN THEY LAUGHING AT YOU OR WITH YOU!

  • Ermy Erm

    I need to see more of this movie to get a better understanding of all the mixed hatred for it. I just showed my coworker the link and she is black as well and she thought it was cute. She wants to see it. If they premier this trailer on TV and its insensitive then it should be nixxed, but until then, I havent seen enough to judge the whole movie. Again I dont see anything wrong with the clip though

  • Ermy Erm

    yo pro, how goes it…

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Its6amHoGetOut(Check me out!)
    Did they have to make her a princess in New Orleans? whats wrong with the east or west coast, or even Africa or the Caribbean? At least in africa she coulda run into the LION King and that coulda been a tie-in.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    *cracking up at that Lion King remark*….You wrong for that

  • Marquis de Sade

    @ Tooty

    LOL! Spare me! You we then assume that Jimmy Cricket is/was black? That flrefly is clearly a stereotypical proto-type of the ghetto-hood black wino hanging out in front of the local liquor store.

  • TEEDY

    This is the problem, Black people are always so overjoyed with the crumbs we are thrown we don’t know how to demand a loaf. So they finally made a movie with a Black princess, so what? If it’s going to be another stereotypical movie showing us in a bad light, what is the point? Those Disney execs or just laughing at you pathetic people right now cause they know y’all will show up no matter how stupid they make you look. If you are happy to take your little girls to see a crack head fly in a movie that is supposed to make them happy about being them, oh well but that’s your child who will grow up with self-esteem issues and when the world slaps them with that good old blacks are beneath us crap good ole Disney will come thru with the reinforcement they need, after all we all have crack heads in our families right. Yes it is a cartoon but what kids watch helps to shape their minds.

  • stark-vegas

    i really don’t have a problem with the movie. i think it’s going to be good. i wish black folk would stop COMPLAINING about any and every lil’ thang. they have ugly characters in the the other white princess movies too. for real ya’ll, just chill!!!

  • Jo Jo

    It’s set in ‘Nawlins! That’s why they talk with an accent…be real. Come on now, the movie looks damn cute. I plan on seeing it. And I agree with a ton of other posters who pointed out that they don’t sound no different than any number of black folk….would you rather they white washed it???? I can just hear the complaints if that were the case.

  • glok9n

    @TEEDY ! ON POINT !

  • helloitsme

    hey this is a kids movie adults can read into to it kids all they see is a funny cricket

  • TEEDY

    Oh my God, it’s not about the accent; some of y’all surprise me with your inability to look deeper than a glass of water. Like I said I live in New Orleans and yes I’m sure there are some slow people with no education who do sound like that and if your family members sound like that they just might be one of those slow people i’m talking about but my point is why do the worse things in our community have to magnified??? I don’t have a problem with the accent everyone who is not from here gets that wrong but the broken English and the sambo steez is what I have a problem with.

  • http://www.google.com Man, I just don’t care

    LOL! Spare me! You we then assume that Jimmy Cricket is/was black? That flrefly is clearly a stereotypical proto-type of the ghetto-hood black wino hanging out in front of the local liquor store.

  • WhatsYoursIsMine

    I think the character is supposed to just be a backwoods/bayou guy. I looked up the movie on Wikipedia, and the guy who’s voicing the lightning bug is famous for his voice, and I think he’s white.

    John Goodman is going to be one of the characters, he does a good Cajun voice!

    I KNOW THERE ARE MANY UNFAIR & UNREALISTIC PORTRAYALS OF BLACK PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA, ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT.

    AND IT IS GOOD TO BE AWARE AND OBSERVANT OF WHAT IS PUT OUT THERE.

    BUT, MAYBE JUDGEMENT SHOULD BE HELD AT THIS POINT. WE SHOULD NOT TRASH THE WHOLE FILM BASED ON ONE LITTLE CHARACHTER WHO MAY NOT EVEN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE STORY…

    I can see what some people are complaining about based on historical cartoon figures especially for Disney. But, at the same time I can see people are also being extra sensitive as usual focusing on racial issues. I say it can go either way. Maybe bad intentions. Maybe accute paranoia. Does it really matter to me…no.

  • Xavier08

    There is nothing offensive about this trailer, it seems like it is going to be a good movie. When I first saw the firefly,I did kind of stop and wonder what the hell is this but it’s all in fun and like someone said earlier kids will see this and laugh. I don’t think black kids will see this and think they’re a bumbling firefly. I think black girls will see this and it will reinforce the “I can be a princess” mindset for little girls. What’s wrong with that? I’d rather a child grow up thinking she’ll be a princess than a supporting character.

  • kansas

    I saw nothing wrong with it, and will be taking my girls to see. humph.

  • Phoenix

    The firefly isn’t a crackhead. He is a wino. There are winos in New Orleans who sound like that regardless of race. My brother met a derelict Chinese trailer park trash (with a George W. Bush accent and all) in Texas on vacation one time.

  • Mock Rock Star

  • silkybee

    Does anyone know who wrote the script for this movie? Were they black? Cause I heard on Black voices that Disney has been told to go back to the drawing board on this movie because it’s coming out racist.

  • Ndi

    Ummm I think he was suppose to have a Creole/New Orelans accent. But I wonder why they just HAD to put it in the south? Just had to give them some type of accent. Cuz u know us colored dunno no good ANglish!

  • Jassy

    everybody is making a big deal out of this fly’s teeth…does anybody remember the disney/pixar movie “cars” and the tow truck with the jacked up teeth and the “trailer trash” persona? I’m just sayin.

    Is it possible that they were trying to cast black people in a negative light with the fly? Maybe, but i seriously doubt it. I think people are looking into this a little too much.

    I’m addicted to disney cartoon’s and I wish they would have made a movie like this when I was a small child. I didn’t see anyting wrong with the fly, and I honestly think that no matter how they made this movie, SOMEBODY would have found something wrong with it…I know we as black people have been ( and still are ) treated unfairly, but i think this is going to be a cute movie that people will enjoy.

    and i think we should be a little more focused on the racist people who are going to sh*t on this movie and say that the people at disney are out of their minds for making a princess black in the first place.

  • Kwentsiwa

    The firefly has got red hair, chances are, it’s not supposed to be ‘black’…

  • Jassy

    @ Kwentsiwa

    I agree…who said that this fly had to be black? i’m pretty sure there are whites just as well as blacks in New Orleans who talk like that.

  • http://natashassecret.blogspot.com Malaika

    I’m not sure what to think of the firefly….BUT I am disappointed that people on here are defending Disney because now, “black girls can be princesses too”.

    I’m sorry, but being a PRINCESS is NOT something our little girls should aspire to be (black, white, asian or latino). This whole “princess” mentality is exactly what’s wrong with my generation–the “me” generation who feels that they are entitled to everything! The image of a princess is a female who has been handed everything her entire life and has people waiting on her hand and foot. Um—what’s so wonderful about that???? NOTHING. “Princesses” are spoiled and stuck up.

  • http://natashassecret.blogspot.com Malaika

    And….Anytime you make a movie concerning black people, you have to be VERY CAREFUL because of the history of how black people have been represented on film. Sambos, coons and mammies are still alive and well. So a seemingly innocent character that would be fine in a white dominated film, will take on a different significance in a black dominated film. That’s just how it works unfortunately.

  • onion61

    It makes me sad to see how complacent we’ve become whenever we are disrespected, and so many people wonder why some people still think it is okay to insult African Americans. Yes New Orleans is colorful and has a wonderful and very rich history, I just can’t understand why of all the images they could have taken from there they chose to portray a toothless brokedown firefly. I know that New Orleans is much more than that. No one is saying that this type of imagery is absent from the Creole /New Orleans culture, what I am saying is that why do all of the images associated with black folks always have to be distorted or clownish? Why couldn’t the fire-fly have all of his teeth, be clean and look presentable, like Jimminy Cricket? Show me this parody in any of the other princess movies. It’s distasteful and distorted and the underlying connotation is negative. I’m sorry, but I have sent out a mass email to everything Disney/Pixar and to the media. This is unacceptable. In Mulan you did not see a portrayal of the stereotypical bucktooth and half blind chinese person that used to permeate early Hollywood movies i.e. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, In Pocahontas did you see any Native American characters stereotyped as: “Injun Joe Me smokum me peace pipe” that was always shown in old Looney Tunes cartoons? What about Aladdin? There were bad guys, but the comic relief was a genie (he was blue)not like the genie from old Hannah Barbera cartoons, a monkey, the carpet and the bird and neither were condescending. Let’s look at: Beauty and the Beast(all dinnerware and not offensive), Cinderella (the mice were nice), Snow White (although they used Little people they were all valiant and honorable), again all are absent of any blatantly racist stereotypes, but all of a sudden with a movie with an African American heroine/princess and the only character they can come up with has to be so ridiculously embellished and negative. I have to agree with Spike Lee with what he said on: CNN Black in America, that if he wants to do a dumb ass comedy with no message starring black folks he can get plenty of money from studio execs but when he wants to do a black film or a film with a positive message mysteriously there’s no money from the studio or black movies just don’t make any money; and we all know that’s a lie. And lastly, all of the data that was compiled during the investigation for the CNN Black in America feature all showed that RACISM IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN AMERICA!!!!!!! And that is a fact.

  • cj

    I find it hilarious that people are so overworked by this….(I’m from Louisiana) and appreciated the cajun/creole dialect…its something that is signficantly distinctive to Louisiana and had they not done it…what would have been the point of setting it in New Orleans??…the fly is just a fly…DAMN! its not that crucial…the princess is beautiful…she speaks (from that little clip) proper..(shouts to Anika Noni Rose)…and children (who the movie is intended for) will see a funny fly…and i personally thought the fly was like a white cajun story teller (when i frist saw it)…but i guess….people will complain about EVERY AND ANYTHING….

  • jackjack

    SOMEBODY TELL LUDA TO SHUT THE F*CK UP WITH THAT BULLSH*t SONG THAT JUST LEAKED OUT TO THE MEDIA.

    THE REPUBLICANAS ALREADY ARE TRYING TO SCARE WHITE PEOPLE AND THIS DUMB *SS NICCA IS TALKING ABOUT PAINTING THE WHITE HOUSE BLACK AND CALLING HILLARY A B*TCH.

    DUMB AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASS…I SWEAR.

  • cj

    oh and there are CLEAR differences between cajun/creole dialect (which isn’t racial)…southern vernacular…and how African Americans talk (because we do have our own distinct vernacular as well)….

  • orb queen

    I just wanted to say that even though the trailer was hilarious I did take offense to the firefly with that being said I’m pretty sure if it was a “white” cajun princess the firefly would probably representa bayou cajun person and nobody would care, but since the princess is black and from New Orleans everybody assumes that the firefly is a black “uncle tom” looking character which I will admit came into my mind, but come on people it’s a FIREFLY OR lIGHTNING BUG not black or white just an insect without a race! like in real life we don’t go around saying hey that roach is Asian oh that beetle is Mexican! by the way being from New Orleans I must ask why the princess can’t be creole!!!! if they want to go back to the history and culture of my great city then she should have been creole like me we never get any recognition! also no one in the N.O. talks like that if they do then their really really old and live in the country not the city.

  • Pynk

    The picture isn’t showing up, I have no idea what it is of.

  • onion61

    BTW!!! I’m not sure if some of you are aware of this but…DENIAL and MAKE BELIEVE are not going to make racism disappear no matter how hard you wish upon a star or try to pretend that it doesn’t exist. We can’t all be crying and complaining all the time at the same damn time about the same damn things if they aren’t real. Does everybody have to be discriminated against, called a racial slur, imprisoned unjustly, denied employment, try to run for president and have your wife be insulted daily on the FOX news channel, be racially profiled, sodomized by a broom stick at the hands of the police while in a holding cell, be shot 23 times by the police in front of your home at the door while reaching for your keys, or shot 50 times and killed on your wedding day, or be a young teenage girl gang raped by a group of white boys and called a liar before some of us realize that RACISM is real. You’ve got to be a real dumb ass if you believe that on today, July 30, 2008 in America we are crying racism because we’ve got nothing else better to do than point fingers or lay blame. May God have mercy on us.

  • Shame on Disney

    I work with young military children and I would not want to show this crackhead to any of them. What a waste of a great idea! Shame on the people at Disney that are sitting at some table giving high five for this mess!

    I think that it’s cute and I am definitely going to see it! Why do we have go on a rant? Everything seems to strike our nerves. Get over it! Stop blaming white people for everything!

  • DhaniDarko

    FIRST OFF KIDS, MICKEY MOUSE IS BASED ON BLACK FACE MINSTRELS.

    SECOND, SOME BLACK PEOPLE TALK WITH A DRAWL AND HAVE MISSING TEETH.

    THIRD WE LIVE IN A WHITE SUPREMACIST CULTURE. GET OVER IT AND ENJOY LIFE!

    The firefly is Cajun and that is exactly how they talk; so the portrayal is accurate. Besides, Cajuns are black, white, or a combination of both so it doesn’t seem to fair to get offended when the bug is n’t characterized by its race…

    @brdnbutta

    I’m actually from New York and I suggest that (funds permitting) you travel a little bit more outside of the U.S. and be amazed that there is actually a whole world that has been thriving and in existence way before the U.S. My comment wasn’t about the accent it was about the grammar being used. It gives the perception that the orator isn’t well … educated and even dumb. That’s what I was talking about because that’s what my perception of the argument was.
