Wow, I hate to hear that about A.I.’s child. Derek Fisher’s child went through a tough illness a few years ago. It just brings home the point that illness and disease don’t care if you’re rich and famous. I wish him and his family the best.

On another note, I think the whole notion of putting his career on hiatus is a disingenuos ploy on AI’s part. The buzzards have been circling over his career for the past couple of seasons now. There may be a part of him that’s using this opportunity to exit the game of professional basketball quietly.

You probably are not a basketball fan. If you were, you would realize that AI’s career has suffered in recent seasons because the teams he has played for have viewed him more as a contributor off the bench rather than the franchise player he has become accustomed to being over the years. It’s no secret that he’s been very vocal about his disappointment about riding the bench.

What my detractors either don’t know or choose to ignore is that while the situation with A.I.’s daughter is disheartening (and we all wish his family the best), Iverson is used to being the franchise player. He is now almost 35 years old and 6 feet tall. Very few teams are looking for that quality in a player. That is attested to by the fact he has played for four teams in the last two years. A.I., being the competitor he is, has stated to the media in the last several months that he still wants to play. However, his skills have declined as he has aged.

All I was saying was that this situation with his daughter gives him the opportunity to focus on what’s really important (family) AND to leave the game of basketball with a measure of dignity.
