Tyra Banks Shines The Light On Black Culture’s Color Complex… 9-Year-Old Cries Because She’s Too Brown

- By Bossip Staff Categories: For Discussion, News

Tyra Banks is becoming quite the little agent for social change. After airing out gold digger moms for raising their daughters to marry for money, Banks recently took on young girls struggling with self-esteem and showcased one particularly sad story of a little 9-year-old so dismayed over her brown skin that she cried on television. Tyra has nothing better to talk about?! We all know that the spectrum of colour is misrepresented in the media. No need to reiterate the obvious!

  • Injera70

    Damn shame.

  • Caramel Cat

    Tyra come on…

    I’m starting to think that she does all these kinds of shows to subliminally make her guests hate themselves more than they already do. She keeps recycling this stuff over and over again. If it’s not a fat girl, it’s nappy headed girls, or dark skinned girls, or people who hate their own race…blah blah blah.

    @Somali Ninga

    I was done with Tyra years ago when she did a show on the standards of beauty and had a panel of women who all hated the way they looked. Most of them were dark-skinned and/or had short hair, etc. She closed the show out and looked in the camera with a straight face and said something to the affect that the standard of beauty doesn’t always have to be Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Beyonce, or ME!!! I couldn’t believe she shoved herself into that mix. No one is taking anything away from her but with her being the host of her own show she needs to stop making it about her and always remain neutral…all she does is make everything about HER….maybe that’s why she is getting canceled…

    How much longer is this black, white, light, brown, red skin issue gonna continue? The devil is not racist. He will take anybody out regardless of shade, race or creed.

  • KocaKola

    People kill me always blaming the white man. When I was in school it was always the brown/light skinned black kids teasing the darker skinned kids about their “blackness”. I myself have also been a victim of teasing because I am dark and ironically it was my own race doing the teasing.

    Tyra Banks failled to mention black women w/ VERY DARK complexions like Alek Wek for example. SMH

    I thaught you were leaving us for twitter any way GTFOH

    Tyra is talk-show host whose objective is to gain ratings. She’s not a social scientist, although from time to time she does take on some interesting issues.

    I applaud her for talking about colorism within the black community, because it’s a dirty little secret no one wants to admit. However, I usually take her findings with a grain of salt because I realize that her primary objective is to entertain rather than educate.

    Hey lady…

    It’s not like Tyra has made herself an advocate for black pride, so her motivations for having these kind of shows are quite suspect in my eyes.

  • http://twitter.com/ibramblebush ibramblebush

    She doesn’t even advocate black culture for that matter.

    Tell that girls mother to get her some violin lessons I thinks she has better things to do than to worry about her color. Go read a book.

  • Alrighty Then... (Barbara Jordan)

    get over it! Black is black. This is about the most stupid, dated argument! I can’t understand for the life of me why this keeps coming up! Are we all that color-struck?

  • Who cares?

    I’m sick of the whole light skin vs dark skin. Shyt is annoying. Dark skinned females need to pull up their boots and get some self esteem and stop playing the ” poor dark girl victim”.

    Lauryn hill is dark skinned, she is intelligent, she is strong. She never once became stuck on the dark skinned issue, she did not let that get to her. Why can’t more dark skinned women be like lauryn hill?

    I can’t stand dark skinned females always bytching about their skin color. It is a shame because I’m attracted to dark skinned women. I went on a date with a dark skinned female a few months ago and she spent the whole date acting insecure about her skin color, telling me how hard life is for her, and how she doesn’t feel beautiful. Shyt is such a turn off seriously.

    @Who cares?
    maybe the female was fishing for compliments, which is also a turn off

  • Matix B

    @ Who cares? I 100% co-sign. We were all teased for something back in the day, but If you havea healthy self worth It souldn’t matter today! Get over it!

    This post is ironic, given that any non-black woman with a fake butt or black man gets shoved down our throats daily on this site.

    Blame white folks they started this im better than you because im lighter, and then some stupid black folks fall right into it, im light and i have light ,brown , dark brown and all shades in my family and my parents raised us to love our brown color no matter how light or dark it is, and she still says one day you will see how great it is to be brown .. and i see it everyday by looking at the white folks all up on the sun !!

  • UrHeinessDaQueen

    This isn’t the 1st time Tyra has touched this topic & even though some ppl are so stuck on color in these day & age,I particularly am fed up with this.Enough already!
    Yes,the media doesn’t help but let’s just learn to love, accept ourselves, embrace it period!

  • Caramel Cat

    Hey Rose!

    I hear you, I was telling Syd the other day that I never really was affected by the light skin dark skin issue because I’m caramel brown (got a light bright mother and a chocolate dad) but I was always raised up that it didn’t matter what complexion someone had. Ugly is ugly, no matter what shade you may be. In the summer I tan real easy and I wear it with pride, in the winter I get real light and I wear it with pride. God made us different shades and colors, that’s what makes us beautiful as a people…
