Quest Love, from the Roots, shares his opinion about modern day hip-hop in a recent Spin Magazine article:

The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe the artist is smart.

  • The Full Has Never Been Told

I’ve been saying it for years. BET is Buffoon Entertainment Television, and it definitely is the mainstage for the “Buck and Shuffle” hip hop “artists” (I use that term very loosely) of today. It’s as if any and everything that is horrific or distasteful is glorified as the ideal in today’s hlp hop. Despicable. Big up to ?uestlove for pointing that out.

the reason for that is that we make excuses for them saying let Soulja, Bow Wow and others make that MONEY. It’s all about the money and not able keeping your morals and respect for yourself.

Yet when our kids come out dumd or dropout of school to be the next Weezy and Soulja Boy-we scream it’s the white man’s fault. Yet it’s us ignoring the talented rappers and supporting coonery.

  • http://n/a Shirley

Mary J. Blige Has Super Powers- Is right on! the commercial southern rappers are whack. Whatever happen to groups like Arrested Development? Occasionally even Outkast seems to put forth a shuckin & jivin song. BET is a disgrace.

I’m glad they called him out. I’ve said time and time again, when is Obama going to address us? He’s addressed latinos, gays, jews, native americans, asians, specifically and uniquely, why not us?

  • X

    @dubya

Don’t be an idiot. If he tries to run an a black orientated campaign he will loose. Can’t you just trust that the brother will do the right thing (by all),

    ———————————————–

    So true.

What’s even crazier to me is how you have certain artist (Jim Jones, just to name one and there are plenty more) who come right out and say all there about is GETTING THAT MONEY and people STILL buy into it. They couldn’t care less about musicianship. There primary goal is MONEY. They are willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to SELL albums.

I said it before and I’ll say it again, “If reciting nursery rhymes over a beat somehow becomes the LATEST THING you are going to see A BUNCH of reformed Gangstas, Drug Dealers, and Pimps”.

And I wouldn’t be surprised to hear “The Byrd Gang”

reciting “ITSY BITSY SPIDER” over a Swiss Beatz Track.

I get the impression that some of them would sell there own mothers out (they’re already selling there community out, why not?,what’s left?) to get out of the same situation they glorify not only in there music, but with their persona (Rick Ross to name one and there are plenty more).

  • dubya

an idiot? okay…so we sacrifice our needs so he does not appear to be running for the president of black america?

That’s not a sacrifice i’m willing to make. point blank. If he’s willing to speak to latinos, jews, gays, etc..then he must speak to us as well.

No one expects him to cure our ills, but I want proposals, expectations and agendas.

An idiot would be one expecting a “brotha man” handout once he’s elected.

Watch who you call an idiot. I engaged with you respectfully and I would expect the same in return.

Coon sh!t is not exclusive to the south… Chicken Noodle Soup anyone? And what about Puffy’s whack a**?

  • dubya

    erica:

Throwing McCain into this argument is a void argument as if serves to only deflect. I can find a counterexample for just about anything, does not make the original argument any less valid.

Obama is running for the president of America. If he can sit down and barter with latinos, gays, jews, and working class whites without appearing to be a latino or gay or jew or working class panderer, he can do the same for us–specifically and uniquely.

We are very much a part of the fabric of America. We have issues that uniquely affect us that need to be addressed.

If he can give a speech in Berlin talking about what he wants to do as a member of the global community, he can give a speech talking about what he wants to do for the african american community.

I apologize for offending you, that was not my callous attempt.

I went to see Obama when he spoke at the Apollo, and yes he did speak to black people about issues pertaining to black people with an agenda on how he expects to change this country so that it would be better for us. That’s why your statement, not necessarily you, is idiotic. He cannot walk around doing this all the time. You need only to research his past actions to know the passion and sincerity in the dedication to his people. However, he can not get elected if he places too much emphasis on blacks and exclude the other ethnic groups in this country. Please understand what he is up against – A BLACK MAN IS RUNNING FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Get behind or get out the way.

    That is so true

  • WOW

I DON’T EVEN LISTEN TO RAP ANYMORE BECAUSE IT’S SO DISRESPECTFUL AND DEGRADING TO BLACK MEN AND WOMEN. ME AND MY FRIEND HAD A DEBATE ABOUT LUDACRIS AND HIS SONG ABOUT OBAMA. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT SHE POINTED OUT HE DOESN’T EVEN LET HIS DAUGHTER LISTEN TO HIS OWN MUSIC AS AN ATTEMPT TO SAY HE IS SMART AND KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING MY RESPONSE WAS YOU CAN SHAVE A MONKEYS ASS AND PUT HIM IN A SUIT, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS STILL A MONKEYS ASS. RAP HAS GONE DOWN THE TUBES. I MISSED THE DAYS WHEN DEF JAM AND BAD BOY WAS THE SHYT. BEFORE THEY HANDED THE REINS TO SELF PROMOTING JAY Z AND BEFORE DIDDY WENT EXTRA HOLLYWOOD AND STARTED SHOWING HIS TRUE FIERRRCCEENEESSS

  • The Roc

The artists that care about quality music need to hook up with some tech geeks and figure out how to cut out corporate interests that impair their creative vision. The forum is there. Between YouTube, Amazon, Internet radio stations and ITunes there is some ground to be broken. These cats need to just think outside of the box instead of pointing fingers. The music industry is what is but these artists have more options with technology than their predecessors to change the game. Man up.

  • Sha

    To got-damn

1st off, thank you for pointing out the improper use of English.

Although Quest Love makes a significant point, it gets lost as he wide-eye(ly) espouses his observations in minstrel-like, Ebonics-type speech. [Better known as the "pot calling the kettle black" syndrome].

“The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe artist is smart.” What kind of ig’nant n*gger ish is that? Quest, come correct with the verb conjugation. Yes, have an opinion (he has a right to), but express yourself accurately. His lack of a grasp on the English language further perpetuates the minstrel, ignorant aspects of hip-hop. And I’m sure he wasn’t doing that for personal effect. C’mon now?!

  • http://n/a Shirley

Puffy, is a coon show too. He is more of the flashy coon. Would you guys put 50 in the same minstrel show? Come to think about some of the southern rappers names are slave sounding names i.e. young buck, young jeezy, young anything is just plain wrong. during the years of enslavement, the enslavers and overseers would refer to adult black men as young this or young that or little this or little.

  • rachel

Pertty much all rap these days is sell out to destroy black community , coons in minstrel shows is alive and well on every coast , Just that deep south has down like a science its sooo SAMBO.

Some one needs to take all rap music out in the streets and burn it but of course thats never going to happen beacuse white society loves how it continues to destory us our culture and artform. So on the sly they will say its awful but continue to be produce by greedy music moguls both black and white and white people who just want confirmation that black people is whack and rap music provides that verification.

They were willing to destroy Disco and funk back in 70′s and 80′s cause it was music of love and self respect for , and great talent.

but this rap crap will never die due to it’s deeper purpose ..KEEP BLACK COMMUNITY IN CHAINS!!!

Actually he conjugated the verb correctly. Artist is a singular noun. Therefore, the use of the verb “is” was correct. Maybe injecting “being an” between believe and artist was supposed to be printed.

Nevertheless, ?uestlove makes a valid point. I could be wrong, but the rappers that he is referring to don’t love and appreciate the art and the history of Hip-Hop. It’s not just Southern rappers either.

I went and read the whole article. I didn’t even know it had been all these years since D’Angelo had been around. 8 years….wow. I mean I was thinking about what happened to D, Maxwell. It is really sad and Ihad no idea that objectifying them messed up their heads so much. But they are right. It wasn’t about the music after that video. It really wasn’t. I do like D’Angelo’s music though. I loved Brown Sugar and I look forward to anything that he comes out with. I really hope he stays sober and gets it done. Music has definitely changed since the mid-to-late 90′s. I mean I loved Angie Stone as well. She just seemed to have fallen off completely. Their music was good and had a positive message. I really hope these people can get back out there because I am so tired of the Soulja Boy type of junk that is out here. And it is all the same. There is no variation, we have no choices. Why can’t 3 6 Mafia and Lauryn Hill exist in the same world. It is so sad that people’s personal lives have affected their art like that. This article definitely put me on and answered so many questions.

  • Sydney

?uestlove has been discussing the state of hip hop for some years now. I found the below excerpt from an interview he did in 2006 with the LA City Beat, www(dot)lacitybeat(dot)com, in which he discussed the “minstrel movement”:

One of the main texts of hip-hop is surviving in the ‘hood. Is that story played out?

“You’re going to have to look at hip-hop through the eyes of what has come before it, and see if you can sort of see a cycle. You have to figure it out like an algebra problem. Saying that, I now have to say that hip-hop is the new minstrel movement. I don’t think most hip-hoppers even know that sometimes they’re part of the joke. I’ll give you a great example: I’m very happy for Three 6 Mafia at the Oscars, but I’m sorry, after watching that at least six times in a row, I get the feeling that people weren’t laughing with them. It’s more like a novelty thing. The minstrel movement has definitely taken over hip-hop. And as a result, the heart of the matter’s just not there anymore.”

There was a statement to be made, but now it’s just entertaining?

“Here’s the problem: It’s always been entertainment. We’ve always known that, and to tell you the truth, that’s borderline what paralyzes us. We’ve been here for 12 years, but every album’s like, “Oh, we’re on the verge – this gonna be the one!” But there are some people that genuinely believe – I tease Common about it all the time, but he really believes that love makes the world go ’round, and good music’s just the soothing thing that we need. Yeah, in theory, I do believe that as well. I don’t want to ever mislead people that I’m not about my art. But you know, I have my suspicions and my theories that certain people don’t know that it is all entertainment.”

Is there a problem with having always to speak to the commonality of black experience?

“And they don’t know that their people aren’t them? [Laughs hard] I would be okay with this current state of hip-hop; however, something got lost in the translation, and now I believe that hip-hop has been mistakenly replaced as the actual mirror reflection of black life.”

  • Sydney

I like this statement: “I would be okay with this current state of hip-hop; however, something got lost in the translation, and now I believe that hip-hop has been mistakenly replaced as the actual mirror reflection of black life.”

And therein lies the rub: yes, hip hop is entertainment, but with its massive popularity that now spans the globe, it has also become a means for casting a general image of what some believe is the genuine African American experience. And we are more than a people consumed with sexuality, materialism, and an aversion to intellect. We need more balance in our musical choices, and artists who offer more than rudimentary, stereotypical lyrics should have the same opportunity to share their art with the masses.

    @ Sydney

    Good Morning and Happy Saturday.

  • Sydney

Hi, I’m Just Me! I love D’Angelo’s music as well. I think some excellent artists came out in the 90′s — D’Angelo, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Erykah. . .

  • Sydney

Wait, I think I need to make a correction on Lauren — I think her solo CD came out in this decade. Change that to The Fugees :)

If I amnot mistaken the MisEducation of Lauryn Hill came out in 1998. I remember having that CD when I was 14-15 which was in 1998.

  • Sydney

Thanks for the correction, I’m Just Me. So I was right about Lauryn :) I still have that CD. . .it was hot!

I do not think TI is part of the minstrel so he may not always be positive but he is def. not on a minstrel show level. I won’t have yall talking about my baby..:-) I am very disappointed in music these days. I work with young kids so I see the influence. We are so much better than what we put out. For ex. in Lil waynes new video I just realized he is robbing the bank to re build NO what the heck is that about??? SMH

  • ebGCH

    That man is intelligent.

I appreciate his standpoint and delivery.

Keep going ?uest, I look up to you.

  • http://sydneyshotel.com Sergio Colon

The new minstrel movement was quite hilly but well worth it as it was picturesque. If it wasn’t for personal effect and artist in black people, it would have made for quite a picture. They get black people because of all of TI in ig.
