Posted by Bossip Staff
Quest Love, from the Roots, shares his opinion about modern day hip-hop in a recent Spin Magazine article:
The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe the artist is smart.

Wow
?uestlove is part of hip-hop’s Mt. Rushmore right now….love them, love them, love them. Speak on it ?uest, I feel you!
This is a good article. I’ll have to finish it later. I immediately went to the back, and the end of the article has some good juicy bits about black artists taking so long to release material.
?uestlove is the truth (’specially on them cans fa real), as is the roots. nothing negative to say here.
Preach it ?uest I LUV YA you r speaking the truth new artists that sell r bull The roots, common, mos def, dead prez, etc ,etc, goes on and on
Free your mind people
the really good artists dont get shine,,,,,, the ones i named above
black power…………..
minstrel-any of a troupe of performers typically giving a program of black American melodies, jokes, and impersonations and usually wearing blackfac
True…
iNSIghtFUL…Hmm
YES YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSSSS YALL!!! ?uestlove speaking nothing BUT the truth. Not just a minstrel show, but anything like Soulja Boy, Plies, Flo Rida, Rick Ross (you know what I mean) sound like something that got taken fresh off a slaveship, while m*****a cracks the whip.
Sambo rappers are disgracing Hip-Hop, with their coonery and the condoning of ignorance, feeding it into the minds of young people. Its most of these commercial southern rappers *****ing things up. Someone needs to give them a *****ing dictionary lame country ***** coons, running around like they’re on a plantation.
And BET is the mainstage of this minstrel show.
notice that people would rather comment on bey and jay walking down the street then talk about that we r being brainwashed to SUPERMAN LOL
this is crazy i feel like i am in the matrix
thats why kids r going up messy and ignorant
bet is not even owned by black people thats why i dont even bother watching tv
Thanks Bossip for the post Love the roots they always keep it real their new album is off the charts which it would get more aitime great article
True Dat ?Love comes with the truth
IF HIPHOP AINT DEAD, SOMEONE NEEDS TO KILL IT!
I’ve been saying it for years. BET is Buffoon Entertainment Television, and it definitely is the mainstage for the “Buck and Shuffle” hip hop “artists” (I use that term very loosely) of today. It’s as if any and everything that is horrific or distasteful is glorified as the ideal in today’s hlp hop. Despicable. Big up to ?uestlove for pointing that out.
The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe artist is smart.
**********************************************************
AMEN QUESTLOVE AMEN. MINSTREL HIP HOP IS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS
^^^^^ ?uestlove…my bad
then talk about that we r being brainwashed to SUPERMAN LOL
this is crazy i feel like i am in the matrix
thats why kids r going up messy and ignorant

the reason for that is that we make excuses for them saying let Soulja, Bow Wow and others make that MONEY. It’s all about the money and not able keeping your morals and respect for yourself.
Yet when our kids come out dumd or dropout of school to be the next Weezy and Soulja Boy-we scream it’s the white man’s fault. Yet it’s us ignoring the talented rappers and supporting coonery.
so i am mad at myself because i went to check on the source to find out if Bossip made an error or ?uestlove..
Bossip you are missing an article, you know ‘the’-between ‘believe and artist’..please fix, if not you make his statement void..thank you!
as usual those on point are heard but not listened to.
BLACK FOLKS NEVER TAKE ACTION THATS WHY THEY ARE CONSTANTLY PUNKED.
WHOA SELLOUT CATS ARE HECKLING OBAMA
Yes, free your minds for this mess they put for us to hear. They want us to become gone and more irrevelant. The real artist are shelved to the new young ***** in the butty music…. They don’t know their God, they don’t know their language. We aren’t well as E. Badu says.
Mary J. Blige Has Super Powers- Is right on! the commercial southern rappers are whack. Whatever happen to groups like Arrested Development? Occasionally even Outkast seems to put forth a shuckin & jivin song. BET is a disgrace.
after looking at the new trina video all i can say is “AMEN”
Thank you, my brother
thatbrutha:
Sellouts for calling Obama out on what he needs to do? Please.
I’m glad they called him out. I’ve said time and time again, when is Obama going to address us? He’s addressed latinos, gays, jews, native americans, asians, specifically and uniquely, why not us?
@dubya
Don’t be an idiot. If he tries to run an a black orientated campaign he will loose. Can’t you just trust that the brother will do the right thing (by all),
Leave Obama alone has Mccain addressed you?
Crabs in the barrel,,,,, i swear some black folks r the biggest complainers,,, but did u even register to vote? sshhhhhhhh stand for something,,, obama has addressed black people time and time again HE IS A BLACK MAN IN AMERICA WITH A BLACK WIFE HE KNOWS THE STRUGGLE……b4 u complain abt him visit his website and educate yourself

So true.
What’s even crazier to me is how you have certain artist (Jim Jones, just to name one and there are plenty more) who come right out and say all there about is GETTING THAT MONEY and people STILL buy into it. They couldn’t care less about musicianship. There primary goal is MONEY. They are willing to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to SELL albums.
I said it before and I’ll say it again, “If reciting nursery rhymes over a beat somehow becomes the LATEST THING you are going to see A BUNCH of reformed Gangstas, Drug Dealers, and Pimps”.
And I wouldn’t be surprised to hear “The Byrd Gang”
reciting “ITSY BITSY SPIDER” over a Swiss Beatz Track.
I get the impression that some of them would sell there own mothers out (they’re already selling there community out, why not?,what’s left?) to get out of the same situation they glorify not only in there music, but with their persona (Rick Ross to name one and there are plenty more).

That would really be a *****ed up thing to say, if there wasn’t some truth to it. And believe me in some cases California, and New York aren’t too far behind.
an idiot? okay…so we sacrifice our needs so he does not appear to be running for the president of black america?
That’s not a sacrifice i’m willing to make. point blank. If he’s willing to speak to latinos, jews, gays, etc..then he must speak to us as well.
No one expects him to cure our ills, but I want proposals, expectations and agendas.

Throwing McCain into this argument is a void argument as if serves to only deflect. I can find a counterexample for just about anything, does not make the original argument any less valid.
Obama is running for the president of America. If he can sit down and barter with latinos, gays, jews, and working cl***** whites without appearing to be a latino or gay or jew or working cl***** panderer, he can do the same for us–specifically and uniquely.
We are very much a part of the fabric of America. We have issues that uniquely affect us that need to be addressed.
If he can give a speech in Berlin talking about what he wants to do as a member of the global community, he can give a speech talking about what he wants to do for the african american community.

I apologize for offending you, that was not my callous attempt.
I went to see Obama when he spoke at the Apollo, and yes he did speak to black people about issues pertaining to black people with an agenda on how he expects to change this country so that it would be better for us. That’s why your statement, not necessarily you, is idiotic. He cannot walk around doing this all the time. You need only to research his past actions to know the p*****ion and sincerity in the dedication to his people. However, he can not get elected if he places too much emphasis on blacks and exclude the other ethnic groups in this country. Please understand what he is up against – A BLACK MAN IS RUNNING FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Get behind or get out the way.

Ok, you got me there. Although I was referring to the level of intelligence they personally display. A lot people really need to move past thinking that having intelligence somehow makes you either soft or sound white. What the ***** does being able to speak in complete sentences have to do with your race or ethnicity?.
It’s been that way since my days in high school and it just seems to be getting worse.
I’ve never been able to understand it. The whole concept makes me think of one slave telling another slave,”Don’t you let m*****a know you gots no book learnins or you is sho gonna gets whooped”.

Making more than your teacher is not a sign of intelligence. There are people selling their ***** making more than a teacher. Does that make them smart?, LMAO !.
MONETARY GAIN DOES NOT AND NEVER WILL EQUAL INTELLIGENCE.
That statement says more about our society as a whole than it does about being dumb. That a person who goes through years of schooling to become a teacher makes less than some dude who walked in off the street and picked up a microphone.
He had just better hope that statement doesn’t come back to bite him in the ***** when 5 years from now Young Jeezy, will be a use to be.
I apologize for being rude as well. We can agree, disagree, and move on!

I caught it too.
The sentiment behind the statement as a whole, far out weighs the error. Whether it was intentional or not doesn’t make it any less true.
That is so true
I DON’T EVEN LISTEN TO RAP ANYMORE BECAUSE IT’S SO DISRESPECTFUL AND DEGRADING TO BLACK MEN AND WOMEN. ME AND MY FRIEND HAD A DEBATE ABOUT LUDACRIS AND HIS SONG ABOUT OBAMA. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT SHE POINTED OUT HE DOESN’T EVEN LET HIS DAUGHTER LISTEN TO HIS OWN MUSIC AS AN ATTEMPT TO SAY HE IS SMART AND KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING MY RESPONSE WAS YOU CAN SHAVE A MONKEYS ***** AND PUT HIM IN A SUIT, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS STILL A MONKEYS *****. RAP HAS GONE DOWN THE TUBES. I MISSED THE DAYS WHEN DEF JAM AND BAD BOY WAS THE SHYT. BEFORE THEY HANDED THE REINS TO SELF PROMOTING JAY Z AND BEFORE DIDDY WENT EXTRA HOLLYWOOD AND STARTED SHOWING HIS TRUE FIERRRCCEENEESSS
The artists that care about quality music need to hook up with some tech geeks and figure out how to cut out corporate interests that impair their creative vision. The forum is there. Between YouTube, Amazon, Internet radio stations and ITunes there is some ground to be broken. These cats need to just think outside of the box instead of pointing fingers. The music industry is what is but these artists have more options with technology than their predecessors to change the game. Man up.
CO-SIGN to ?uestlove…….. ***** I remember back in the 90’s when damn near EVERY single rapper sounded intelligent…… now and days it’s been narrowed down to “Superman That Ho”……. I can’t take stupidity in Hip-Hop anymore…….. great thing the Underground movement is poppin’…… because they just give people hope for intellectual Hip-Hop……
Rap is getting stronger by the second. They be bootleggin my boy Plies CD in my hood cuz that mu*****in album is straight fire shawty

1st off, thank you for pointing out the improper use of English.
Although Quest Love makes a significant point, it gets lost as he wide-eye(ly) espouses his observations in minstrel-like, Ebonics-type speech. [Better known as the "pot calling the kettle black" syndrome].
“The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe artist is smart.” What kind of ig’nant n*gger ish is that? Quest, come correct with the verb conjugation. Yes, have an opinion (he has a right to), but express yourself accurately. His lack of a grasp on the English language further perpetuates the minstrel, ignorant aspects of hip-hop. And I’m sure he wasn’t doing that for personal effect. C’mon now?!
Puffy, is a coon show too. He is more of the flashy coon. Would you guys put 50 in the same minstrel show? Come to think about some of the southern rappers names are slave sounding names i.e. young buck, young jeezy, young anything is just plain wrong. during the years of enslavement, the enslavers and overseers would refer to adult black men as young this or young that or little this or little.
Pertty much all rap these days is sell out to destroy black community , coons in minstrel shows is alive and well on every coast , Just that deep south has down like a science its sooo SAMBO.
Some one needs to take all rap music out in the streets and burn it but of course thats never going to happen beacuse white society loves how it continues to destory us our culture and artform. So on the sly they will say its awful but continue to be produce by greedy music moguls both black and white and white people who just want confirmation that black people is whack and rap music provides that verification.
They were willing to destroy Disco and funk back in 70’s and 80’s cause it was music of love and self respect for , and great talent.
but this rap crap will never die due to it’s deeper purpose ..KEEP BLACK COMMUNITY IN CHAINS!!!

So I agree with BET and urban radio being the culprits behind minstrel music, so why aren’t we calling for Stephen Hills (BET EXECUTIVE)resignation? That mother*****er has to go. I don’t even think I’ve seen a new video for the Roots new album on BET at all yet….as a matter of fact I know I haven’t. I don’t really mind Rick Ross and all those other cats, I just mind that there’s no balance at all. It’s been years since I’ve actually seen a Little Brother, dead prez, Buckshot, Mos Def, or Roots video on tv…..there’s something wrong with that. The Roots are a great band and I think if you let kids listen to it, they more than likely will love it. Come on people….let’s start a revolution!!!!!!!!!

im down here in the south and while i dont agree with your oppinions of southern people you are on point about southern rap (aka the “Circus”) i cant even listen to my radio without feeling my soul die a little everytime. Actually he conjugated the verb correctly. Artist is a singular noun. Therefore, the use of the verb “is” was correct. Maybe injecting “being an” between believe and artist was supposed to be printed.
Nevertheless, ?uestlove makes a valid point. I could be wrong, but the rappers that he is referring to don’t love and appreciate the art and the history of Hip-Hop. It’s not just Southern rappers either.

It’s a damn shame, when most of the time on here you have to research the post they put up before you even make a comment, because these jack*****es (and you know who I’m referring to) will have you going on and on and at each other over something that isn’t even accurate.
If they intend to continue the trend of sinking to the level of Media Take Out than I guess I’ll have to be out.
Some of their commentary on the stories they post is bad enough without having to be inaccurate. Intentionally misleading people is not cool. And I’ve been to this site and seen enough from them to believe IT WAS INTENTIONAL.

This is EXACTLY what I meant. Is it necessary to have this poor (I’m *****uming,Sha?.) woman and others go on and on so vehemently about something that wasn’t accurate to begin with. Unless she happens to read the REAL VERSION, she’s left believing ?uestLove is illiterate. DUE TO THE SCANDALOUS TACTICS OF BOSSIP!. Putting it bluntly, that’s *****ED UP, lol. SMDH
“The new minstrel movement in hip-hop doesn’t allow the audience to believe artist is smart.”
What’s ‘new’ about that? He’s right, but that’s been going on forever.
I went and read the whole article. I didn’t even know it had been all these years since D’Angelo had been around. 8 years….wow. I mean I was thinking about what happened to D, Maxwell. It is really sad and Ihad no idea that objectifying them messed up their heads so much. But they are right. It wasn’t about the music after that video. It really wasn’t. I do like D’Angelo’s music though. I loved Brown Sugar and I look forward to anything that he comes out with. I really hope he stays sober and gets it done. Music has definitely changed since the mid-to-late 90’s. I mean I loved Angie Stone as well. She just seemed to have fallen off completely. Their music was good and had a positive message. I really hope these people can get back out there because I am so tired of the Soulja Boy type of junk that is out here. And it is all the same. There is no variation, we have no choices. Why can’t 3 6 Mafia and Lauryn Hill exist in the same world. It is so sad that people’s personal lives have affected their art like that. This article definitely put me on and answered so many questions.
?uestlove has been discussing the state of hip hop for some years now. I found the below excerpt from an interview he did in 2006 with the LA City Beat, www(dot)lacitybeat(dot)com, in which he discussed the “minstrel movement”:
One of the main texts of hip-hop is surviving in the ‘hood. Is that story played out?
“You’re going to have to look at hip-hop through the eyes of what has come before it, and see if you can sort of see a cycle. You have to figure it out like an algebra problem. Saying that, I now have to say that hip-hop is the new minstrel movement. I don’t think most hip-hoppers even know that sometimes they’re part of the joke. I’ll give you a great example: I’m very happy for Three 6 Mafia at the Oscars, but I’m sorry, after watching that at least six times in a row, I get the feeling that people weren’t laughing with them. It’s more like a novelty thing. The minstrel movement has definitely taken over hip-hop. And as a result, the heart of the matter’s just not there anymore.”
There was a statement to be made, but now it’s just entertaining?
“Here’s the problem: It’s always been entertainment. We’ve always known that, and to tell you the truth, that’s borderline what paralyzes us. We’ve been here for 12 years, but every album’s like, “Oh, we’re on the verge – this gonna be the one!” But there are some people that genuinely believe – I tease Common about it all the time, but he really believes that love makes the world go ’round, and good music’s just the soothing thing that we need. Yeah, in theory, I do believe that as well. I don’t want to ever mislead people that I’m not about my art. But you know, I have my suspicions and my theories that certain people don’t know that it is all entertainment.”
Is there a problem with having always to speak to the commonality of black experience?
“And they don’t know that their people aren’t them? [Laughs hard] I would be okay with this current state of hip-hop; however, something got lost in the translation, and now I believe that hip-hop has been mistakenly replaced as the actual mirror reflection of black life.”
I like this statement: “I would be okay with this current state of hip-hop; however, something got lost in the translation, and now I believe that hip-hop has been mistakenly replaced as the actual mirror reflection of black life.”
And therein lies the rub: yes, hip hop is entertainment, but with its m*****ive popularity that now spans the globe, it has also become a means for casting a general image of what some believe is the genuine African American experience. And we are more than a people consumed with sexuality, materialism, and an aversion to intellect. We need more balance in our musical choices, and artists who offer more than rudimentary, stereotypical lyrics should have the same opportunity to share their art with the m*****es.
@ Bossip….that is a daggone shame that you cannot copy and paste correctly. It does say ‘the artist is smart’. So why when you copy and paste that, can it not be correct.
@ The idiots on Bossip who cannot get past a Bossip Made Grammatical Error to get the point of this message: You are really sad. Even if Bossip didn’t make an error it is sad that you are harping on that fact instead of the fact that culturally speaking hip hop is going down the tubes. I am sure you commenting on the error are the same ones who rock Soulja Boy and Plies like they are saying something smart or productive. You are a sad bunch with crab in the barrel syndrome, for real.
@ Sydney
Good Morning and Happy Saturday.
Hi, I’m Just Me! I love D’Angelo’s music as well. I think some excellent artists came out in the 90’s — D’Angelo, Maxwell, Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Erykah. . .
Wait, I think I need to make a correction on Lauren — I think her solo CD came out in this decade. Change that to The Fugees
@ Sydney
If I amnot mistaken the MisEducation of Lauryn Hill came out in 1998. I remember having that CD when I was 14-15 which was in 1998.
@I’m Just Me
Your gravie is adorable, by the way.
Off-topic, I know BOSSIP doesn’t post new stories on Saturday, but, hopefully, there will be a post soon on Obama’s comments on reparations. He’s scheduled to address the Urban League today:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes offering reparations to the descendants of slaves, putting him at odds with some black groups and leaders.
The man with a serious chance to become the nation’s first black president argues that government should instead combat the legacy of slavery by improving schools, health care and the economy for all.
“I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again — that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.
Thanks for the correction, I’m Just Me. So I was right about Lauryn
I still have that CD. . .it was hot!
@ Sydney
Thank You Momma!!
I was just watched the Doo Wop that thing video. What the hell happened to Lauryn man. She just looked so healthy, and was so positive. She was talking about woman being strong and uplifting us. For her to let Rohan help be the reason she is losing her mind is so beyong me. It is just so sad (I think his name is Rohan).
Why doesn’t Bossip post on Saturdays? Maybe they will post it when they post tomorrow? I don’t know. I did read this article on Yahoo though.
@I’m Just Me
I LOVE the Doo Wop video, lol. Yes, I think the fall of Lauryn is tragic — she’s such a talented artist, and I loved the messages in her music — she was uplifting women and taking them to task for some of their poor decisions. Yeah, I think Rohan is the name of the man behind her losing it. Such a shame. . .I think sistas are still waiting for her to return.
I like Seal, too, and his first CD came out in the 90s as well, I believe. And I’ve been listening to a lot of Jamiroquai lately. I tend to like artists from the U.K. Their sound is definitely different and, lyrically, they’re on another level, IMHO.
I don’t know why Bossip doesn’t post on Saturdays — the news cycle doesn’t end on the weekend, lol. Some of best dirt happens on a Saturday.
@I’m Just Me
I have to go out now, but I’m sure I’ll run into you again soon, chica.
Take care!
well good murning syd and im just me!!!!
looks like were the only ones up lol
and i know im late but i miss l.hill too.
i you tubed her and almost cried…what happened?!
well goodbye i guess syd lol
Bye Syd
HEY MANDAH!! HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS MORNING!!
@Mandah
I think that man and his womanizing ways may have played a part. From what I hear. I don’t really know though, I just love that Miseducation CD. I really do and i hope that she comes back out. I don’t know.
Maybe the industry and times are changing. She is a mom now…I don’t know.
Met ol dude a couple of times. He needs to wash his *****. His body odor can knock you out
He aint lie.
OoopS went to lunch!!! im good just me !!!! i meant to tell u yesterday i love ur gravie too!!! cute lil baby in there cheezin’! lol, i wish she would come out with a new album too! my copy of miseducation is all scratched up and i need something other than plies and rihanna to listen to! lol
God, i miss The Spinners and The Commodores. Hell, the 70’s was the hallmark of R n’ B. The ***** that you people call music today is garbage.
I do not think TI is part of the minstrel so he may not always be positive but he is def. not on a minstrel show level. I won’t have yall talking about my baby..:-) I am very disappointed in music these days. I work with young kids so I see the influence. We are so much better than what we put out. For ex. in Lil waynes new video I just realized he is robbing the bank to re build NO what the heck is that about??? SMH
August 02, 2008. MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that a horrible brawl broke out in the Turks & Caicos between ANTM hopeful Bianca and Hairspray actress Nikk Bronsky. Here’s how TMZ is reporting it:
Cops tell us the two got into an “altercation” in the departure lounge at the Providenciales airport in the Turks and Caicos islands in the Caribbean — and by altercation, we hear it was an all-out family brawl!
A spy at the airport that day tells us the fight was over saving seats in the lounge — Nikki was saving five seats for her fam, and Bianca’s family wanted to sit. That’s when we’re told the huge fight erupted — with the entire families on both sides throwing down, yelling and cursing…
Both divas have been charged with *****ault — Blonsky with two counts! But get this — Nikki’s father Carl was also charged with inflicting bodily harm, for his alleged beatdown of Eleine Golden, Bianca’s mom. Nikki’s arrest was first reported by Us.
Both Nikki and Bianca have been released on bail, but Carl’s gotta cool his heels in jail until August 8th. All parties will have to book a trip back to the islands this fall to appear in court.
And it gets worse. According to sources, MediaTakeOut.com has learned that Bianca’s mom was so devastatingly beaten that she had to be airlifted to a hospital in the United States and is VERY SERIOUS condition. Hopefully she pulls through….
Dammmmmn! Did y’all hear about this ish?
Bossip why the hell haven’t you corrected your damn mistake yet? you are missing the article ‘the’ between ‘believe’ and ‘artist’! damn it!
bree, apparently there’s only one person working @ bossip today… and it took them all damn it day long to come up with one story. plus errybody know bossip staff cant spell, they cant even copy& paste right lol
That man is intelligent.
I appreciate his standpoint and delivery.
Keep going ?uest, I look up to you.
The new minstrel movement was quite hilly but well worth it as it was picturesque. If it wasn’t for personal effect and artist in black people, it would have made for quite a picture. They get black people because of all of TI in ig.
he is so handsome, looks like the man i fancy in London.
wish this one was single….
