Lupe Fiasco Gets Deep And Stuff “I Don’t Want To Be Jay-Z And Be Worth 400 Million…”

Fresh off his climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise attention to drinking water shortages, Lupe Fiasco recently got real deep and stuff, saying not only has the journey showed him he’s on the right path musically, he’s also convinced it’s his calling to help his fans find “self esteem” instead of Bentleys and chains. Pop the hood for his exact words.

Lupe says his journey up Mt. Kilimanjaro proved to be an illuminating one career-wise:

”You get to a certain point in your career and you wonder if you’re being arrogant or you are on the right path. This showed me I am on the right path with what I talk about. And now I have more to talk about.”

As he prepares to release his third album Lasers Lupe discussed the challenge of having to satisfy himself as well as his label:

”It’s less about me being a celebrity, because I guess I’m not really a celebrity,” he says. ”The most difficult part of the music business is the label. What I want to do and what they want me to do – creatively – is in conflict. It doesn’t keep me up at night. I look at it as a challenge. It’s not meant to be easy.”

”There’s a misunderstanding with my fanbase,” he says. ”People [at Warner] feel they know my fans more than I do. They want me to step out of my comfort zone and step into theirs. I don’t have necessarily the celebrity success they want me to have but it’s more social success and being able to speak at a college about world affairs. That’s a success, to me.

”I don’t want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show. It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.”

Despite the challenge he described in working with the label, Lupe says all parties are satisfied with his upcoming album Lasers, although it is currently lacking a release date.

”It’s an album we both feel comfortable putting out,” he says. ”I’m somebody saying the things that maybe 98 per cent of the music industry is not.”

In addition to his music career and film projects, Lupe is also working on a documentary he produced for the History Channel and his clothing line.

Wow, like Lupe is like, really deep, and stuff. From where we’re sitting, every rapper stays at odds with what their label wants them to do and we’re pretty sure Lupe isn’t the only rapper who is satisfied not being Jay-Z and not driving a Bentley or flossing with big chains — so to say he’s saying things 98% of the music industry is not seems a lil off.

Do you agree or do you think Lupe is just so deep and smart and cool and rebellious not to bow to Illuminati Hov and the capitalistic music industry structure???

  • Gimmeabreak78

Lupe is one of the unsung heroes in hip-hop. He will never be a commercial success on the same level as Wayne or Jay-Z because hip-hop record execs feel the music must be about the money/cars/jewelry/women to be relevant and commercially viable.

  • HOT CHOCOLATE

Real talk! I commend him for taking a stand and doing the opposite.

  • charlyndria
  • Chi-Town Diva (Wild 100′s)

Whats up Lupe Fiasco West side !!!!! CHI-TOWN STAND THE F$CK UP!!!!!!!

  • MsConsciousOne

Lupe, I am one of your biggest fans because of your substance and conscious. You are the only rapper I can listen to, since the old skool guys are gone. Please keep doing your thing, you have a ton of us spiritual people out here supporting you! I pray that the lyrics you spew impress the soul of these young folks. You are a gift from the Universe.

  • lupe should be named dumbo

So he wishes for his fans to be satisfied with grits and gravy while he eats caviar off of his record sales.

If he was intelligent he’d know that confidence comes from ACCOMPLISHMENTS, NOT being satisfied with sleeping on the floor.

    HE STUPID.

  • QUEEN

I’M PROUD OF LUPE…HE IS YOUNG SMART AND INTELLIGENT…HE IS GOING TO SHOW KIDS ABOUT LIFE WITH OUT ALL THE EXTRA HYPE OF GROUPIES DRUGS, SEX, GANGBANGING, TOO MUCH ICE AND NOT PAYING BILLS…I THINK HE IS RIGHT FOR THE RAP GAME. REMIND ME OF MOS DEF, TALIB KWELI & COMMON ETC…

  • diane

    @msconsciousone
When he gives his CD to the public for FREE i’ll believe his lyrcis, but he WANTS all the PAPER he can get.

  • MsConsciousOne

True confidence is knowing who you are within; not defining yourself by the world. Lupe is brilliant.

  • Money is Power

Money is POWER to lift you and OTHER’s out of poverty.

Nothing good comes from poverty. 99% of the people in jail are there because they were VICTIMS of their POVERTY, and had to steal for food, shelter, drugs or clothes.

this lupe should be forced to give his CD sales to the poor.

  • MsConsciousOne

@Diane, so because he stands for something he should give away his music? Come on now! His music feeds the soul.

  • NELLZJUS2BAD

DATS 2 LONG 2 READ BUT HE NOE HE WANT 400M IN DA BANK..HELL I WOULDNT WANNA B JIGGA EITHER BUT DAT 400M SOUND GOOD

  • diane

I SAY AGAIN, CONFIDENCE ONLY COMES THROUGH ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

IF YOU CAN’T PAY YOUR RENT, BUY FOOD, HELP SOMEONE IN NEED, AND HAVE A LITTLE FUN MONEY LEFT OVER, YOUR SELF ESTEEM WILL BE ZERO. I GUARANTEE IT.

HOWEVER, I WILL SAY THAT THE GOAL OF BEING RICH IS NOT DESIRABLE. REASON BEING, IS THAT EXPERTS HAVE PROVEN THAT, AFTER YOUR BASIC NEEDS OF FOOD, SHELTER, CLOTHING, ENTERTAINMENT ARE MET, EVERY DOLLAR YOU EARN AFTER THOSE NEEDS ARE MET, DOESN’T IMPROVE YOUR HAPPINESS QUOTIENT A GREAT DEAL.

IT IS LIKE RAY CHARLES SAID, “I CAN ONLY EAT ONE STEAK AT A TIME, AND I CAN ONLY WEAR ONE PAIR OF PANTS AT A TIME.”

HOWEVER IF BLACK PEOPLE ARE TO CONTROL THEIR DESTINY AND STOP BEING DEPENDENT UPON WHITE MEGA MONEY, WE NEED TO HAVE BLACK BILLIONAIRES WHO CREATE JOBS, GIVE LOANS, AND PROVIDE EDUCATIION FOR OUR OWN COMMUNITY. SO WE NEED THESE BILLIONAIRES.

BILL GATES CONTROL THE LIVES OF ABOUT 200,000 SOFTWARE WORKERS AT HIS MICROSOFT. WE NEED BLACK BILL GATES WHO CREATE JOBS FROM THEIR WEALTH INSTEAD OF PARYTYING AND LIVING HIGH ON THE HOGG.

  • just….why?

Lupe’s music has always been real. Every song has a message and for that I respect him. I wish there were more artist that thought about the messages they are perpetuating instead of just grabbing the money and running! How can one truly call themselves a success when they’ve led a great portion of a generation towards self destruction in their own pursuit of wealth?

  • MsConsciousOne

@Diane…I shall agree to disagree with ya. The truth is peace of mind comes from a loving relationship/connecton with God, not from wordly accomplishments. Your soul account is what matters most, not your bank account. With peace comes confidence, love, humility, grateful attitude, giving spirit, kindness, money to give to others, etc.

Maybe if we focused on loving ourselves more in the community, we could love others. Just a thought. The truth is, only hurt people want to hurt people. The more love you give, the more love you shall receive. When you are on your death bed you will realize accomplishments won’t matter, but how much love surrounds you will.

  • DaJournalist

I like what Lupe stands for. These labels are trying to feed us bullsh1t. Anyone that fights to do something in opposition of THAT, I’m down with. Yay Lupe. Don’t dumb down. We ain’t stupid. They are.

  • Sarah

JAY Z IS TOO UGLY!! NOBODY WOULD WANT TO BE LIKE HIM NO MATTER HOW MUCH MONEY HE HAS!!

  • J

    Love Him!!!

For the people who want a free CD, you have to keep in mind the man has to eat too. Just sayin.

Obviously, he enjoys his job, alot of people can’t say that.

  • J

    I love Dari too! :) )

  • WHAT THE HELL IS A JAY-Z?

GO AHEAD LUPE. DO THE RIGHT THING AND YOU WILL BE BLESSED. JAY-Z IS FOR MINDLESS FOLLOWERS. LUPE LIKE ROBERT FROST FOLLOWS THE PATH OF THE “ROAD NOT TAKEN” CREATE YOUR OWN PATH INSTEAD OF FOLLOWING THE HERD.

  • 2Sweet

We need more of him in the game, for real. More Lupe’s, less Wocka Flocka’s.

  • STUTTERBOX

    MUCH LOVE FOR LUPE

  • just4u1

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at- A g e m i n g le @ c.o..m a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

  • T-MAC

That’s whats up Lupe. Regardless of what the record labels want, please by all means, keep churning out that real down to earth hip hop.

  • L

Although I respect Jay and his hustle, I am in full support of Lupe as well. We each have our own path to follow and our own purpose in life. A washing machine cannot operate as a dishwasher and neither should we attempt to operate outside of our purpose as it simply wont work for us. Tupac is a prime example of this. Although he succeeded and did well at gangster rap, it was his socially conscious songs that garnered him true acclaim and endeared him to his true fans. It wasnt until he began to operate outside of that to garner fame and fortune did he encounter misfortune. Stop chasing after others and shine in your own light!!!

  • Be Original

I agree w/what Lupe is saying and he’s what I consider to be a true artist. People amuse me on what they consider to be “deep”. What he said isn’t deep, it’s just logical.

Wish him much more success because his last album was good.

  • chep

the best thing to do when you CAN’T be jay-z is to pretend like you don’t want to. There have been a million lupes in hip hop history. But, no one else has reached jay-z’s level of success. It is a business after all. No matter what anyone says, Lupe is a capitalist; just like jz, just like Nas, just like Tupac was. I just think it’s disingenuous when Lupe insinuates that he could be jz if he wasn’t sacrificing for some higher plane of enlightenment.

  • UrHeinessDaQueen

Btw,Jay looks real nice in his suit! I’m so loving it.

  • PORTIOLS

i think he is just trying to be popular. if this is true why cant he just give us his cds for free. we all need mula to survive were do they do dat at i wonder maybe in Lupes fantasy world everythin will be for free.

  • Maal G

Lupe I feel you 100% brother do your thang SAVE THE BABIES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rosie

I can respect him for his comments because lately some of these celebs act so arrogant its ridiculous. Like don’t forget who made you who you are and your money came from me the consumer. I understand sometimes life in the limelight can be a bit much, but hey that’s what they signed up for.

That’s why I love Lupe and everything he stands for. Cant wait for LASERS.
    I also cosign with @dari and @diane

  • DIANE

to every idiot that says money don’t matter –

WHEN YOU GIVE UP ALL YOUR MATERIAL POSSESSIONS TO PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO NEED THEM, AND BECOME LIKE MOTHER THERESA THEN I’LL BELIEVE YOUR STUPID AZZ COMMENTS.

    or

YOU CAN JOIN THE AFRICAN WANDERERS IN THE DESSERT WITH NOTHING BUT YOUR SPEAR AND LOINCLOTH. LEAVE THE MATERIAL POSSESSIONS TO INTELLIGENT BLACK FOLKS AND ALL THE WHITE FOLKS.

AND TO DUMMBIES WHO SAY BLACK PEOPLE DON’T NEED BLING -

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME ALL RACES HAVE ENJOYED AND WORE JEWELS. WHY THE HELL SHOULD OUR BLACK KIDS BE DENIED THE PLEASURE OF NICE JEWELS.

LUPE IS AN IDIOT. HE SHOULD TELL HIS MOTHER TO SELL HER JEWELS AND GET CUSSED OUT.

  • Really sleepy…

    @diane, i guess..

I just wanted to address the idea that he should give his cd’s away for free, I mean really? first off, Lupe has already put 10-19 high quality mixtapes out FOR FREE. Not like the nonsense you would find on “No Ceilings” but well written lyrics with carefully placed metaphors. Secondly, Consider the fact that he is a NORMAL PERSON with a family (he’s the sixth child of eight) if you heard the song “Real” you would know he’s probably the primary source of income for his family, and has responsibilities. Lupe is the best one doin’ it and deserves to be paid for putting in the work, he has never suggested for his listeners to stay in one place, and has always been pro black-power in his music (“this ain’t a pen it’s a paintbrush, and I intend to rearrange how they paint us”) do I don’t see what point “@diane” or “@lupe should be named dumbo” are trying to make. Lastly, why is it that whenever anyone says anything about being different from the rest, everyone thinks it’s a ploy to be popular? What do you want? for everyone to act like Lil Wayne (shudders)

    100+ for @Dari and @MsConsciousOne.

  • Mo

So he’s now officially gone from being called Joe Camel to Ill. Hov now i see …

Big ups to Lupe, climbing a mountain’s no joke

  • Young

J came to SA in 2006, addressed the water shortage, did a concert and donated all proceedings to water projects. today millions have water because of Jay Z, in SA we even have a clean water dedictaed system, watre pipes every where because of Jay Z. Lupe doing it now is just adding, we appreciate all the efforts all your help and so forth.

to be a better man you dont compare yourself to another, Lupe did that and thats where he is wrong, he should have told everyone that since Jay Z started this project, I felt the need to add on it, instead of me driving a Bentley I felt it was time to donate that money. itys not like Lupe gave us water systems that work, he just addressed this issue again meaning he is opening it up for discussions.

We love both Jigga and Lupe here… man people like Em should come thru as well and we would see what they would give away. people bash the one rapper that gives more because he has more. if he had little he wouldnt have benefit concerts or barsury funds and so forth. u people should be proud of those who invests in your children.. Oprah has a beautiful school for girls here, we love that… we appreciate that, may God bless them for the difference they make

  • Reggie08

Lupe is nice with it, but I’m sure he meant percent instead of “per cent”

  • http://www.thenoireffect.com GotYou

It cost money to make albums? So whomever said he should give away his content for free is mad. He has to recoup cost and live a life like the rest of us. Music isn’t a hobby for him. He’s a poet and music is his life.

  • laser tag

some of you are killing me on here…”he should give his cd away for free”..misery loves company damn can the man eat? at least? what you guys need tp realize is that having money is fine. the problem starts when you began to love money so much you will do anything for it.As a result money is the root of All evil. mo money more problems and maybe lupe choose a life of peace and comfort. i love his music. It enpowers me while on the otherhand other folks songs degrades me as a women

  • Doctor Bird

Lupe is obviously a smart dude and spreading his knowledge and is just making it really clear he’s not about the flash and the flash doesn’t phase him. The dude is focused on the original new world order principals-spread your knowledge.

  • BritChick

Diane you make very ignorant comments and I am surprised no one has noticed this. You think just because you are better off than your so called African wandering around the desert with his spear and loincloth you feel he is less intelligent than you.

And for the record you paint a very racist stereotype.

Lupe is obviously saying he is more interested in knowledge, education and upliftment of the people than chasing wealth. Of course people has to pay the bills etc.

This is the society we live in, he isn’t about to dole out his album for free, then where is the value of his music and how does he survive?

God help people who are as materialistic as yourself.

most of todays artists lack substance…this young man brings hope to the game…he obviously is more into uplifting his community/people and spreading his wealth to help and not just buy a bunch of trinkets that the irs will be carting off someday…i like what he stands for and i will support him…it’s about time that hip-hop takes a stand against what has become the norm…

  • Shoni

The more of a following you have the greater your responsibility…therefore i can understand he doesnt want to be a Jay-Z…I salute this cat because a lot of these guys have an opportunity to speak to these younger people and they dont like Jay-Z. It’s ridiculous…He’s so concerned about superficial things…Get back to giving back knowledge!

  • Lana

JAY-Z wish he was worth $400 million. Even Elvis Presley’s estate which bring in millions and million each year took Lisa Marie forever to be worth that amount.

  • That’s a good thing…

Because he’ll never be worth that much. Also, since when does making money mean that’s all you care about? The problem is that people perceive money and success to be inherently evil and that one must sacrifice your soul to achieve it. It’s all hypocricy really cause most folks taking bout how bad he is would sell their 1st born, and a kidney to have what Jay-Z has.

  • resurrected

So what I am hearing is that for right now he is a man of his own will and does not want to conform to the system of his record label company trying to push that same agenda though with his music… I like that he is not the for the celebrity appeal but just for his love of music but the record labels will drop you off of very little I think it is better when U take the time to create your own labels so that you can have freedom of music and not that have to conform to the same old tactic for money and mind manipulation by your record label…To me the only success that artist usually have is when they confirm totally to the records labels mission making you a puppet like Lady Gaga and only further pushing there agenda which is never about your music or talent but only about manipulating that image of your celebrity and creating following of everyday people…

  • http://www.freewebs.com/atyourbest redcora

Lupe’s rhymes are so intricate and detailed.. Like abstract, surreal and real life that the hollow mind cannot interpret.. But if you REALLY REALLY get what he sayin, especially in ‘Sunshine’ from Food and Liquor,,you my friend are enlightened as well..

Love Lupe! He is a great artist, more talented than some of these so called artists out there. What he is saying is true, and at least he can recognize what he wants, and what his fans want, without “falling puppet” to the music record execs. Good for you Lupe.

Like BIGGIE said: “More Money, More Problems”. NEGB (New England Journal of Medicine) and several other researchers showed that Centurians (people who are living at age 100 and over), are people who live in countries where they do not have wealth. All the money in the world cannot buy love, happiness and simple things in life that makes your life more fullfilling than material things! Lupe you are so right. More people with money die, before they can even get to enjoy it or make their lives worth meaning…So some of your comments are indictive to what the problem is in the Black Community…so busy trying to keep up with the “Jone’s”…SMDH!

I have definitely always enjoyed listening to Lupe’s message through music and can appreciate his growth beyond materialistic worth.

All people who think otherwise are Doe Doe heads! What’s the opposite of conscious rap? Unconscious rap – you sleep, brainless waste of space! Go die on a pile of money you greedy mindless shells.

  • Relz3000

All the money in the world can’t save you if are mentally frozen. Lupe shouldn’t have to give away his profits to any one. He’s trying to give something more valuable, that being an option other than gangsta. Wish I was more familiar with that option growing up.

Lupe is just basically what a young black man should be, problem is most of us aren’t being that so it seems so brilliant. Stay up my brother Lupe and keeping being strong.

  • WhatAWorld

Im a Jay-z fan too but Im not going to sit here and act like he straight dissed Jay.He just used the man as an example.I would love to follow up on the acting that I study in high school but the industry has too many facades for me to deal with.I would love to be rich but at the expense of what my soul, heritage, dignity and pride. No I will keep that and go the business route of things. Also no matter how conscious a rapper is,he is still a member of that group(You Know, lol)

  • DreTruth

He should try to stay as true to himself as much possible but he could play the game a little so that he can get his message out!

  • UNCMBAandBlack

@Diane, so these ‘black billionaires’ you want to see–who’s more likely to invest in the black community, a Jay-Z fan or a Lupe fan? I’m gonna say a Lupe fan is the only one that’s gonna get there in the first place; you only have to graduate the third grade to understand a Jay-Z lyric.

  • MzPW

He speaks the truth and uses his music as an avenue to reach his fans. Have you taken time to actually READ his lyrics to see what he’s talking about? The guy is real….hopefully, he’ll bring back hip-hop sometime soon….

LICK THE CHEESE OFF HAIRY NUTS. I JUST SHARTED!!!

  • WHY

I Love Lupe, I have been a fan since the mixtapes the best rap he has done to date is “Switch.” He’s crazy live; I saw him on the last tour with Ye and he Fu*king killed it… As long as he’s true to himself and he can go on a huge and successful tour with people like Ye, Jay z,etc he’ll be alright…

  • Detriot Slugga

lmao at all you ignorant readers who can’t interpret a basic article. First of all, Lupe is not saying he doesn’t want to make money! He is stating that he doesn’t want to be flashy and be on the scene like the big entertainers (i.e. Jay Z). Secondly, Lupe also stated that don’t let money control how you feel about yourself. When money controls your mind, you feel that the flashy ice can cover up the real demons that you are figting inside.

the most intellegent rapper in the game…i heard a hour long conversation he had with dr cornell west and it was the most amazing conversation i’ve ever heard!!….and someone said he knows all he wants is the money…some people rap for the love of hip hop of course we want to get paid for what we do but for real hip hop artist thats not the main objective! i’ve ben rapping for 5 years and weather i get a deal or not im going to continue!…i rap to give people the felings and goosebumps i get when i hear a lupe fiasco or a nas!

  • Concerned.

Lupe fiasco shares a gift, I have a lot of respect for him. I don’t understand why people here are referring to music as a Business above an art form. that must be one of the most messed up things, sure we’re all capitalist and want to all be rolling around in money while others fight over a piece of bread but I’m pretty sure that music was an art form before it was a business venture.
