What The Hell??? Three Elementary School Teachers In Trouble For Honoring O.J. Simpson, RuPaul And Dennis Rodman For Black History Month

A group of Los Angeles teachers must’ve thought Black History Month was a drag… at least that’s how they treated it! Three third and fourth grade teachers may be removed from their posts, after choosing some unlikely heroes for their students Black History Month celebration. More on the flipside.

Three teachers in California are in jeopardy of losing their jobs after making the decision to honor Black History month by giving their students portraits of O.J. Simpson, RuPaul and Dennis Rodman.

The three white teachers who teach third and fourth grade are on administrative leave after giving their students portraits of the “unlikely” Black heroes to carry in the Black History Month parade.

The incident occurred Friday at Wadsworth Elementary school in Los Angeles.

While other children toted pictures of Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman and President Obama during the festivities, the teachers chose to give their students pictures of the basketball player, accused murderer and notorious drag queen.

The Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP reported the incident to District Superintendent Ramon Cortines after receiving a complaint.

    As a former teacher in the los angeles unified school district i wish i could say i was surprised. the average elementary school teacher in the district is a 20 something whie girl from an all white suburb. wads worth elementary is in watts which is now 90 percent latino, so they probably thought they could get away with dissing the few black students they have left.

    More from the LA Times, latimes.com:

    Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa expressed shock over allegations that three teachers at a South Los Angeles elementary school encouraged students to celebrate O.J. Simpson, Dennis Rodman and RuPaul during Black History Month.

    The teachers have been suspended as the L.A. Unified School district investigates. According to officials, children at Wadsworth Avenue Elementary School were carrying pictures of the men at a parade Friday on the school playground.

    “I am shocked and outraged by the actions of these teachers at Wadsworth Elementary School,” Villaraigosa said in a statement. “These teachers undermined the school’s well-intentioned celebration, and they did so at the expense of elementary school students. Their actions were not only cynical, but did a terrible disservice to the students, their families and all of the teachers who work hard on a daily basis to build trust and a productive learning environment.”

    Toure has always said off the wall stuff. I think he likes the attention. Granted, there have been times where he’s made some insightful remarks, but most of the time he’s just running his pie hole. Some of his remarks about Michael Jackson back in the day were unnecessary. You can tell he’s trying to pander to a ‘mainstream’ audience but makes himself look ridiculous in the process….

  • Ms. EJ

    “You can tell he’s trying to pander to a ‘mainstream’ audience but makes himself look ridiculous in the process….”

    That’s even worse. Can you image a Jewish American cracking jokes about the Holocaust to gain favor? Some topics are completely off-limits.

    Girl, you don’t have to say anymore. I don’t care what the race of someone’s wife is — He can still harbor anger/resentment toward his own. And, yes, I’ve noticed repeatedly that when men — this happened to Film, too — confront other men, they tend to back down, rather than mount an aggressive attack, as they do with women. Interesting, indeed.

  • Caramel Cat™

    @Sydney

    I agree with you but I have to admit, I think it’s more than that. The election of a black man as POTUS has caused alot of dormant feelings and views to rise. For the longest people knew these feelings existed but chose to ignore them and act as though we would progress. White people were comfortable with minorities sprinkled a little here, a little there, but they still needed to feel in charge and in control. They don’t feel that way anymore and it’s caused to race conversation to come up and alot of it is poisoning not only the minds of whites, but the minds of us too. Eric Holder was right when he said the race conversation needs to be had… Malcolm X said it best: “In order for us to get over the issue of race the black man and white man need to sit down at a table across from one another and get all their feelings and emotions out about the other one…but I ain’t the one to do it!” lmao!

    Good afternoon. A story like this is living proof that you must review the information that your children are being taught in school. How could this have happened without the parents’ knowledge? Obviously the parade was a pre-planned event. I remember when I was in school, during our black history parade, we had to do a book report on the person we were representing. Both of my parents were active in my education. What the teachers did was reprehensible, but I don’t think they could have done it without the negligence of the parents.

    Exactly. I know there has been much debate over the veracity of the Willie Lynch speech, but, as you stated, the ideology is very much apparent in our current intra-racial communications and interactions. Black History Month isn’t about celebrating perfect black people because there are/were none. It’s about celebrating the most talented, well-rounded, and inspiring to and amongst us. Dennis Rodman is known more for being outlandish than he is for his talent playing basketball. The same goes for RuPaul. He is known more for being an overgrown tranny than any other achievement. There’s no need even getting into O.J. Being a sideshow shouldn’t be lauded in the same breath as blacks who have actually made substantive achievements and contributions to black people specifically and the rest of humanity in general.

    We have to stop making excuses for inexcusable behavior. I definitely think some of us have lost sight of our history, and I question how much some of us actually know to begin with. There is no way that Rodman, RuPaul, and OJ belong in any category with the likes of MLK and other historical icons. If some of us can’t get that, I don’t know what to say. It’s sad. @Caramel

    “who is creating black history in recent times BESIDES Obama, members of his administration and a few names here and there?”

    I think there are many individuals who are making history who may fly under the radars of a number of us. For example, Ursula Burns, who recently became the first black woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company (Xerox). These are individuals whom you won’t see in the sports and entertainment arenas — moreso in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. There have been a number of political achievements among blacks as well.

    If we look outside the basketball court and the concert arena, there are a number of brothers and sisters who are excelling in the fields of law, medicine, business, politics, etc.

    I agree and these people fall in the ‘and a few names here and there’ description. But my argument is why can’t these people be recognized now? Can we focus on black history in the making? Not to sound disrespectful or disingenuous but I get tired of the ol’ negro spiritual feel we get over MLK, Malcolm, Rosa Parks, Sourgurner (sp) Truth, G.W. Carver, W.E.B. Dubois, etc. etc. etc. I KNOW these people were an integral part of our history but I want us to move forward and move on…these people helped shape us, how are we being shaped and can the spotlight be on the current? I hope I’m getting my point across without offending anyone…

    @Gimmeabreak78

    Today, too many of us feel chide or demoralize the academically gifted amongst us, accusing them of trying to be white.

    ~~~~
    You make a great point with this, but is focusing on the past going to help remedy this sickness???
  • White Devil
    @ Caramel Cat
    Focusing on history reminds us of things we might otherwise forget. Also, time allows us to properly put things into perspective. Things that seem important today might seem less so in the future and vice versa.
    I get that. But I’m 29 years old and have been reminded of the same stuff for the last 29 years. I don’t feel like our focus is on the right thing SOMETIMES….this is just food for thought…
  • Gimmeabreak78
    @Caramel cat
    I was only offering those examples as an explanation for why their seems to be a dearth of outstanding blacks in our society today.
    For example, Myron Rolle, an FSU cornerback AND Rhodes’ scholar was heavily criticized in some black circles for p.a.s.s.i.n.g up the “sure money and fame” of the NFL to do something as inconsequential as attending Oxford. *sarcasm* Their reasoning was that “he has the rest of his life to be smart, but he can only play football for a few years”. I wanted to rip my hair out when I heard that statement.
    It’s not that there aren’t many of us doing well–it’s just that our collective priorities are so messed up, there aren’t enough of us supporting and applauding those wonderful efforts.
    You’re right, all I’m trying to figure out for myself is: Is focusing on the past and what achievements our ancestors fought for going to cure this problem or does there need to be another strategy????…
  • Sydney™
    @Gimmeabreak
    Sadly, I completely agree with your points. The dissolution of the black family has hurt us in immeasurable ways.
    @Caramel
    “But my argument is why can’t these people be recognized now?”
    We can, but we tend to recognize athletes and entertainers more, unfortunately. I believe that is why it is incumbent on us as individuals and as parents to make it our responsibility to teach and learn about the notable individuals who exist among us in law, education, politics, business, and the like. No, you’re not being offensive at all. I view these historical figures as inspirations for those of us in the present and in the future. By no means do I think we should cling to the past and stay immobile.
  • Sydney™
    @Butterscotch™
    “And to make matters worse, he tried to put it off on his cousin.”
    I doubt the existence of this “cousin” — I think those were his thoughts that were expressed, and his half-hearted “apology” was despicable.
    @Caramel
    “does there need to be another strategy????…”
    Yes, I absolutely believe that we need a new strategy. For one thing, I’ve noticed that, collectively, it seems that we shy away from directly confronting the challenges that some of us create and/or contribute to that are damaging to our future, such as the issues of our broken family structure and diminished state of education that Gimmeabreak mentioned.
    I’ll show them a picture of G.W.B. and Bernie Madoff and tell them to kiss my black *#& before I let them bother me.
    YES! This ^^^^^ is why I get what you are saying. Sometimes we want to focus on something remote so badly that we miss the big picture.
    I don’t think that being a lawyer or activist or surgeon makes you automatically better than an athlete or entertainer or artist, so I don’t see why they should be ignored in favor of someone who happens to have a different skill set than they do. Mack, my black plumber, has fixed my pipes on more occasions than I’ve had need for a good black lawyer. I’m just as impressed with his work as I would be with a black surgeon
    And i agree just because you up higher on the totem pole dont make you better than someone who does menial work. i just feel that they could have choosen better people to represent us as blk people.
    I was thinking the SAME thing… :)
    Peace and tranquility are kind of boring.
  • Sydney™
    lol @ Caramel
    They were mad last night, huh?
    @White Devil
    “Peace and tranquility are kind of boring.”
    Well, I’m sure you can find a way to disturb the peace, lol.
  • Caramel Cat™
    @Sydney
    Yeah, I mean I’m not mad at any of them on a personal level. But it was real cute how when all the females left the thread all of a sudden there was a quick tongue lashing on bitter black bytches and how we never recognize when we are doing something wrong, and so on and so on. It was a completely different tone from when the women were present, and I was a little taken aback….
    Oh, you haven’t seen that before? Girl, that’s the usual routine. I thought a certain individual was going to rupture a blood vessel.
  • Caramel Cat™
    Yeah, the only one keeping an even tone was the blogger Mike. I felt kind of bad for him because I think he was expected to immediately side with the testosterone in the room…lol
  • Sydney™
    @Caramel
    “I felt kind of bad for him because I think he was expected to immediately side with the testosterone in the room…lol”
    LOL, yeah, I had the same sense — He’s different, though, and it shows. That’s a very good thing.
  • Caramel Cat™
    @White Devil
    You always find a way to cause a little bit of a stir…lol
  • Caramel Cat™
    @Sydney
    It’s like when we were present they all still had their school clothes on and were doing their best to remain ‘somewhat’ diplomatic. Girl as soon as the women left, the white tees and basketball shorts came out and it was immediately time to talk ish…lmao! I mean, fellas, tell us how you REALLY feel….!
  • Sydney™
    LMAO @ Caramel
    Girl, I had gone shopping after work and came back and read the posts that mentioned us, and I could only chuckle. Who knew that estrogen was so powerful? :)
  • Sydney™
    Oh, and make no mistake, those are their true emotions that were on display, lol.
    I have no doubt that’s true…it’s just really funny to see it being exposed ‘behind our backs’…lol
    “I know us women will give each other props, but I’ve NEVER seen the women co-sign EVERYTHING that another sista/sister said, NEVER.”
    That’s why one man — or a few (there was another male poster who appeared to be more of a deeper thinker) — stood out from the rest. It’s easy to make the differentiation.
    I’m getting ready to leave, ladies. :)
  • Caramel Cat™
    @Ms.EJ
    You are correct, I agree wholeheartedly.
    Well ladies, I’m about to leave in a few…it was good blogging PEACEFULLY today! Take care… ;)
  • Ms. EJ
    @SYDNEY- Exactly, that is why I made sure early on to acknowledge that good man.
    @CARAMEL & SYDNEY- Okay, bye ladies!!! *final exit*
    Oh, yes, girl, always. The brother deserved praise.
    Take care, ladies :)
  • white male
    dennis rodman was a great basketball player, should be a hall of famer, he shouldn’t be compared to oj who is a murderer and master criminal, dennis is just a little weird.
  • Junior Buggin’
    @ Any and all of the Scribbly posters
    “Clearly you are not Black…”
    Really? And you figured that out exactly *how*? Because my posts are “well written?” Was that it? Or is it because I’m not going to go march on city hall because some idiot on the west coast decided to be all clever and give a kid a picture of Dennis Rodman to hold? Seriously, you have to let me know, since my black parents and my black brother and two black sisters will sure as hell have some explaining to do when I go home and tell them that apparently I’m Swedish or Korean or something.
    “it is pretty obvious you have not had the pleasure of being ridiculed… You are highly unqualified to espouse what you perceive as a merely a ‘slight’.”
    Damn! You sure know a lot about my life. Have you been hiding under my bed since I was six or something? Or does my spooky white-man writing give you a unique insight into not only the color of my skin but also into each and every thing that’s happened to me in my life? Also, since you’re such a psychic and all, could you hook me up with some lottery numbers? I’m really sick of those student loan people bugging me every day.
    “I would more than likely keep my trap shut about such matters.”
    Wise advice. You might want to follow it yourself before you start spouting off to everyone else around here how I’m pretending to be black.
    p.s. – The only person in this entire thread who has used the word “slight” is you. If you’re going to come at me using fancy S.A.T. phrases like “espouse what you perceive” and tell me to “keep (my) trap shut,” then you might want to take a minute to crack a book and learn how quotation marks work.
  • kalifa.williams@yahoo.co.uk
    reasons why they should be celebrated:-
    -OJ is the luckiest Black man alive
    …killed two white people and got away with it
    -RuPaul is a man who looks far better (as a woman) than ALL white women his age
    -Rodman is hella ugly and f@cks more & more white women each year
  • Right the wrongs
    The real crime is ALL you black people thinking that these folks OJ,RODMAN& Rupaul don’t deserve to be included in black history. Despite OJ’s more recent actions he was a world renown football player. Rupaul is a trailblazer in MORE ways than one. He is also very inspirational if you have ever met him, heard him speak or read any of his books you will know that. As for Dennis Rodman the only thing he MAY have done was marry a white woman. Lol. Other than THAT you very black people who find an issue with this are the ones who need to have their head examined. Just because they didn’t put together a protest or attend Harvard doesn’t mean their accomplishments should go unnoticed or be demeaned in any way! Some of you people need to stop it with this white devil mess too. White people don’t need to do anything but sit back and laugh. We black folks destroy ourselves by ourselves nowa days.
  • BossLady
    Black folks need to learn to choose their battles carefully. Last time I checked, Dennis Rodman is a record holding stellar black athlete who played alongside the greatest player ever. Rupaul is an EDUCATED black male who has continually defy all odds and maintain a great career. And I do believe the OJ was ACQUITTED of all murder charges. Instead of being outraged, the parents should have not made an issue in front of the kids but jus continued with the parade wit all smiles and celebrated the careers and heritage of these BLACK (before anything else) people. A non reaction would have made for a very uncomfortable working enviroment and teachers lounge and eventually they would have quit. Blatant racist are only comfortable around ppl with similar beliefs. They missed a golden opportunity to teach these minority children 1 of the most valuable life lessons: LEARN TO PLAY THE WHITE FOLKS GAME.
  • DreTruth
    the last comment from bosslady is so damn stupid. None of these people are maintaining anything but destruction.
  • mekamac
    big up 2 all 3 & a special shout out 2 o-j keep up the good work
  • Nubian Quenn
    Wow I was just saying the same thing… WHITE FOLKS HAVE FINALLY SNAPPED and don’t care who see’s it!!!… Their like HELL its a damn recession why hide it any more … we could care less… I’m serious I live in Rochester NY and I’ve noticed it!!! It’s like they all look POSTAL
