True Or False: MoNique Threw Barbara Walters Shade During Their Interview

Posted on March 7th, 2010 - By Bossip Staff

Categories: News, out of pocket, True or False?

According to a source Barbara Walters had her work cut out for her when she interviewed Mo’Nique during her pre-Oscar special.  She wouldn’t even let Barbara in her home to conduct the interview.

Pop the top for more.

According to sources Babara has been telling her friends that Mo’Nique has been her most difficult interviewee yet.  Mo’Nique hasn’t been a huge fan of Barbara’s after her visit to the View in 2006 where Barbara referred to Mo’Nique’s twins as “little creatures.”

Now that she and Barbara are meeting again, Mo’Nique made it as difficult as possible for the TV reporter.  She even refused Barbara to come into her home which is where Barbara usually conducts her celebrity one-on-one interviews.

Between Mo’Nique’s high hair and makeup demands and denying Barbara the privilege to come into her home, Mo’Nique made it clear that she was not feeling Ms. Walters.  The producer even picked up on it and asked Mo’Nique’s husband why she was being so rude.

We can’t call it what do you all think… True or False?

  • Cocoryder

probably true…i would not have given her an interview at all because of her insensitive choice of words regarding my kids…

  • FloRida

    True… I don’t blame Mo.

  • Shemander

I don’t care if she IS almost 80…don’t talk about my child or family. Mo didn’t have to do the interview if she didn’t want to…I wouldn’t have let that trick in either. hmph

  • http://www.swirlsociety.com swirlsociety

this is right up there in the who cares category it must a be a slow morning

  • MrsPriss29

Well what in the heck did Barbara think would happen. You insult the woman’s kids then want a nice cozy welcoming for your interview. Good job Monique.

  • shonda

Monique should off given her a harder time. Rude woman calling her kids creatures.

  • miss luv 2 talk

If it’s true, good for Mo’nique. No one will stand up for your children if you don’t.People can say what they want to about Mo’nique, she stands her own ground. She’s been through too much not to.

  • http://. dance1233

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at- A_ge_m_i_n_g_le @ c-o–m a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

  • ThatBish…yeah, that’s right.

Mo’Nique can do what she wants…Barbaba Walters ain’t shit..been there, now she’s done. Honestly, Mo’Nique’s performance in “Precious” was so good, it would be a shock of all hell if she doesn’t win.. Go head Mo’nique, get your shine while it’s your time. Damn, I can NOT WAIT til the Academy Awards!!

  • http://nautysgirl@yahoo.com bklynlady

I think its true as well and if so THAT RIGHT MO! Old azz cr@cker Barbara Walters…..it’s about time someone knocked her off that high horse….Why didn’t Oprah interview her?

  • Zulu Chili

    Go MO!!..

  • http://nautysgirl@yahoo.com bklynlady

I remember that show when Mo was on the view and she shut Barbara’s azz down QUICK….and Joy….she said to Joy when she tried to defend Barbara, “I feel a back smack coming on”. LMFAO…..

If somebody referred to Barbara’s grandchildren as creatures I’m sure she would have a fit.

Good for Mo! I would have given her hell too.

  • phatgirlssuck

why even do the interview if you’re gonna act like that?

    really can’t stand this heffa

i hope they’re no more mammy roles for her to play

  • red

    children ARE creatures
maybe she’s just racist and doesn’t want white folk in her house

  • SIMPLY PHILLIP BROWN

Barbara, is truly something else. Gotta love how she makes a situation seem more about the other person then her. Always trying to play victim – GIRL STOP!

  • lala

Ok “little creatures” is what women of Barbara’s era called cute kids. “Such a beautiful creature” is also what many said about a beautiful woman. Monique was just out of her cultural ream, which explains why the shyte went over her dumbazz head.

  • smarteston

So is that a photoshopped picture?

  • Takkyaa@hotmail.com

Barbara Walters doesn’t have any children of her own. She adopted one daughter who refuses to have children of her own. She may have adopted a child also…can’t remember. So we can’t say that Barbara would have been angry if someone referred to her child or grandchildren the same. Hell, she doesn’t have any grandchildren.

  • bimshire4life

that what old white folks call kids creatures. ” oh aren’t you an adorable little creature” “look at the little creature” “i could just steal that little creature” it’s a cultural difference and if monique is to dumb to know that well then why should barbara care? Ms. B is PAID unlike most female journalist Barbara doesn’t have to do this shit, she has enough money to retire. Why do some black people call women “ma or mama or mami” regardless of thier reproductive status. WTF MO get over it.

  • Birdman-Baby

Kudos to Monique…i remember when that white b*tch referred to Monique’s kids as “creatures” when she visited the view…Monique SHOULD have made that b*tch jump thru hoops as she did. God Bless u Monique!!!

  • ellegirl

I don’t know if it’s true or false. If it’s true I think Monique was being a little extra. If you don’t like the woman, don’t do the interview. Also, at her age she should know that having a bad attitude is not productive. Also, I would like to add that I can understand why Monique would have a problem with her given their history, but it doesn’t justify her alleged behavior.

  • Mock Rock Star

Maybe she’s still in character from Precious and doesn’t want a b*tch at her buzzer

  • memchee

    *clap* *clap* *clap*

How many of BW’s parties have Monique been invited 2?

Barbara has the habit of acting like she can make or break you! Oprah doesn’t even carry on like that.

Monique deserves xtra cool points for toss’n shade on this one.

  • SnakeEyes

I agreee with the first comment. Just because you are barbra walters does not mean that you can be disrespectful.

  • Blue Eyed Angel

Never talk about a woman’s kids. -The End.

Barbara is so f’n old and dumb.

You’d think she would have the sense to known this by now.. Ms. “I had an affair with a married black man ..and have to tell everyone.. to sell books of course”..Barbara Walters is an old dried up b*tch.

She thought she could say that sh*t about Monique, because she never realized in her small little mind.. she would ever be interviewing Monique in this prestigious manner for the “OSCARS”..

    Take that Barbara. haha

  • Meh

Couldn’t care less if it’s true or false. Barbara’s annoying and there is something i really don’t like about Monique.

  • daahlingnikki

That dry coochie b&*ch is lucky Monique didn’t grab her by that frizzy hair of hers and drag her off the set that day..I will never forget that interview…and “creatures” is not a term of endearment no matter what society or culture you come from…Best of luck to Monique tonight..No one else in the category deserves it more…

  • loveme lovemenot

Barbra Walters acts like she’s some high standard diva!! I would not give no body no interview that considers my children as litt;e creatures

  • cher shears

Thats right MO! Keep that adultress thang up out your house. More people need to keep things real like her. You can tell she really guards and protects heer family. Hell I dont have “anyone” in my pad and Im just a local celebrity lol..

  • Bruh

I remember that show, and while Barbara may
not have really “meant” anything by it, or
to be insulting, the fact remains that its HIGHLY doubtful she would have referred to Angelina and Brad’s twins as “lil creatures”.
Also, its not like MoNique got ignorant, she
merely asked Barbara to “please don’t call my
kids creatures”. She didn’t raise her voice,
or anything when she said it. For those suggesting its just a term that was used in the
past, guess what? WE AIN’T IN THE PAST ANYMORE!” We used to be called “colored” in
the past, too. If Barbara had used that term, would y’all have found it equally as ok, or cool??? Only reason Barbara wanted to interview MoNique anyway, is so she could bask
in the acclaim Mo is getting now. As usual, its more about Barbara, than the interview
subject. Also, something seems “off” about the
story. If Mo wouldn’t allow Babs in her home,
where the h.ell was the interview conducted?
On the porch? In the driveway? Across the street????

  • REPOSITORY

how about not doing the interview all together?? I mean she had that choice too, instead of giving someone hard time

  • DeMI

Mo is ignorant and doesn’t deserve to win an Academy Award. I hope that there is an upset and she loses.

We as the human race are creatures, however you call my kid one and I’m smacking you. White people ALLLLLWAYS looking for an excuse to justify their sh*t…

  • WeSLyN

good for Mo..wow didn’t know about the creatures comment but we all know how BW can get out of pocket..like this old **** deserves any respect (admitting to and obviously being proud of sleeping around with married black senators and like Paul Mooney said on his old standup “MasterPiece”- at least she wasn’t claiming she wanted to be white at one time and kissing up like when she interviewed Oprah at her home, feet all up on Oprah’s white couch, does this white lady have any home training….

True but Barbara is always out of pocket and Monique called her out on it prior. I heard her do an interview where she talked about why she’d never be a guest host on the view because she interupts people and she’s rude and she did call this woman’s children little creaters. It reminded me of that scene from a color purple when that white woman was like sophia’s kids were so clean and then asked her how would she like to be her made. It’s just condescending and Monique ain’t ignoring that. So no B you can’t come to my house. I’m with her.

  • http://aol ebonieladi

It’s almost the same as calling her kids little monkeys. Barbara Walters had BEEN out of pocket. While she may be well informed she is very ignorant when it comes to knowing about black people. I remember when they did the show about Good Hair and she kept insisting that black women get perms and weaves because they want to be like white women. Despite the fact that Whoopi and
Sherri explained to her that was not the case, it was more for convenience, as soon as Chris Rock came out she asked him the same question and he looked at her like “Didn’t Whoopi and Sherri just finish explaining that to you?”
She tends to get on my last nerves at times. Mo’Nique treated her liked she needed to be treated, keeping her at a distance, without being phony.

  • Hell Is Not Full

Unless and until she apologizes , she needs to be treated to FULL SHADE. Calling her babies creatures, is racist and disrespectful, and she’s fortunate that she didn’t get a “nap” from that foolishness. Now because Mo’Nique is Oscar worthy she has to play up to her like all is forgotten?

  • jlittle

I have long been a fan of barbara walters for along time but calling monique’s kids creatures is totally unacceptable and my respect for barbara has deminished a great deal. Miss Monique, I applaud you for standing your ground, you have proven to everyone that you have worked real hard to be where are and I appreciate you because you are truly a sister that our young females can look up to and admire. Peace

  • GET REAL

Most of you are idiots for taking Mo’s side just cause BW is an old white lady. Mo’s is not just like this with BW. It’s been noted since Precious came out that Mo had been difficult to deal with. Remember when she refused to do press for Precious. A lot of it has to do with her husband who wishes he was was the star. On the red carpet at many of the recent events photographers have complained that Mo will not even take a solo pic. The only time they can catch her without her hubby is right after she leaves the stage with her trophy in hand. I have already read many critic’s choices for tonight’s Oscars. Many say that Mo should when but Hollywood is so turned off by her attitude so don’t be surprised if she don’t win the big one tonight.

Trust me, IT’S NOT JUST BARBARA WALTERS THAT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MO’S FAT AZZ & EGO.

  • Ms.ViVi

I dont want to hear anything she has to say until she shaves her damn legs

  • BronxCubanQT

Off topic but black women get perms and weaves for convenience? Surely many black women may get perms and weaves for convenience but there must be just as many who relax their hair or get weaves due to self-hate. I know a lot of black women who think that natural hair is too radical, especially in a corporate environment.

As for the whole Mo’Nique VS Barbara Walters thing…it’s a non-story. Both parties have denied that there is a problem. Even if there was a previous issue, they have both decided to move on and not dwell in the past. Let’s get over it.

  • http://aol ebonieladi

When I was coming up we permed and straightened our hair for convenience, it was easier to manage. Not everyone can rock a natural style, some have hair problems. It seems that more black women today have issues with self hate than in the 60′s and 70′s. Back then we had more self pride.

  • Dirty Diana…Let Me Be ♪

    I like Barbara Walters

  • prettyfaceAKA

Barbara should of apologized to MoNique in private for her off color comment long before the interview…when U say something, and it offends someone…U should apologize immediately…no matter what your intent was…you should just apologize…that’s being professional…Barbara is arrogant, I hate ego driven people like that…they bring bad energy where ever they go…

  • Ms.ViVi

Self hate is usually brought on BY OTHER PEOPLE!
No one is born hating themselves or something about themselves. It is other people that bring them down. Whether you were fat, had nappy hair, had acne, were picked on because of your skin color, were abused…things happen to you to shape the person you are or have become. But we can all change when we really want to and if we are enlightened.

So when I do see a girl going to get her weave done, I don’t frown up my face. I just figured that she wants a QUICK and easy fix. Maybe it is a problem inside but thats not for me to make her feel worse. Just like when I see some guys who are as black as licorice talking about they dont date black girls because they dont find them attractive. I dont get angry, once again I just think about how they might have grown up and what they chose to do now is not for me to judge.

    Its all relative

Mo’Nique is smart to not have cameras in her home. It’s such an intimate setting and should not be put on display for the rest of the world. At this point Mo’Nique should be able to be as demanding as a Barbara Streisand or even Diana Ross. She proved her ability to be a stellar serious actress and she should be able to conduct interviews on her terms.

THIS IS A NEW DAY AND TIME AND AS A JOURNALIST YOU HAVE TO CONFORM TO WHAT IS CURRENT. JUST LIKE THE JOURNALISTS THAT GO TO MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRIES AND COVER THEIR HAIR AND FACES BECAUSE THAT IS HOW THAT CULTURE EXPECTS IT. SO STOP! YOU HAVE TO CONFORM TO THE NEW TIMES AND CALLING PEOPLE’S CHILDREN CREATURES IN 2000+ IS OBVIOUSLY NOT TOLERABLE.

NO THIS IS NOT HAZEL’S/MAMMY’S/PEARL’S TIME. THIS IS A NEW DAY AND YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE DO NOT TALK THE SAME WAY THEY DID BACK THEN.

Two thumbs up for Monique. Protect what is yours lil’Mama. Her dude is a lucky man, and if he screws this up,it would be the worst mistake of his life. Barbara made a mistake and should apologize for it. Monique is a woman who just wants her respect. She didn’t do anything wrong to Barbara. Sometimes folks run their mouth on other folks without thinking about the consequences. However, I think Monique would forgive her if she asked.

  • ada

People, People, People. What happened on the show was years ago. I really don’t think BW meant it the way it was taken. I think Monique has given her by now. I mean she did do the interview. And Monique and BW both stated that the interview was not even done at Monique’s house so where is this information coming from. Everything is fine and gossip sites are trying to make Monique look bad before the Show tonight and mak BW ratings go down on the view. WRONG!!!!! I tell ya

  • Sydney™

“I know a lot of black women who think that natural hair is too radical, especially in a corporate environment.”

I think this is more a sentiment that has been expressed and/or implied to black women by some non-blacks in the workplace. I think most sisters are aware and have heard and/or personally experienced stereotyping of them by other cultures based on aspects of their appearance, such as their hair styles. This isn’t something that black women created and/or have imagined — it’s a reality in some workplaces. There are certain nuances that are apparent to black women in professional environments that women of other races may not experience.

As far as the self-esteem of black women being perceived as lower than in the past — we’re also being scrutinized, attacked, and left unprotected more than in past decades, IMHO. I believe the black community has never been more divided than it currently is, and I definitely think this has had a very damaging impact on not only the self-esteem of some black women, but some black men as well.

  • Sydney™

As far as Barbara Walters’ “little creatures” comment (I didn’t see the show myself), I can see how that could be potentially perceived as offensive. As someone mentioned, it wasn’t that long ago — and some people still use this language — that black children were referred to as “monkeys” and other dehumanizing names.

I think sometimes non-blacks utter comments without being fully aware of their implication. A white colleague of mine recently told a story of an evening out that she and her boyfriend had recently in D.C., and she said that she was fearful in a certain part of town because of the “kids with their pants hanging down.” She never referred to any particular race, but, accurate or not, I detected an undercurrent of stereotyping in her observation. It was subtle but certainly noticeable.

  • Kai Elliot

This story has been denied by both parties! People stop don’t fall for this negativity. The media created this garbage! Barbra and Monique are both denying this.

I do not believe that Barbara was being insulting when she referred to the twins as “little creatures”. That is just an example of the terms that Barbara often uses. The woman is over 80 years old and those references were probably common in her day. I have heard a few white people refer to a pretty woman as a “beautiful creature”.

  • BossLady

I believe that she will be much more succesful than that in the next two years. I also believe her talk show will still be around in the next two years since she has the people we would like see on her show. Also Mo’Nique is a talented actress. Check out her dramatic performance in Shadowboxer with Cuba Gooding Jr and Helen Mirren. She had already proved that she was a good dramatic actress and I expect to see more decent roles come her way.

what is it with white people and creatures? I swear they’re hooked on animals and it’s these same animals that end up killing they a**.

I just don’t think you should call a human being a creature regardless of what race or culture you come from. They’re are human beings. If you want a creature, go to Bob’s pet shop and get you one smh. I would be mad too if she called my children that.

  • Jewel17

@ 4Real-Tho – Barbara Walters is a “snotty bag of wrinkles” Love it!!!

@Bronxcubanqt and others – Getting a perm is self-hate? women and men all over the world of different races have been manipulating their hair, the shapes of their noses and foreheads and other body-parts for CENTURIES. For many, it meant they belonged to a certain tribe. For others, they simply wanted a different look. No one is born with braids, afros, or locks as they have to be cultivated and maintained. Some CHOOSE to be bald. If I were born in B.C. times, I would have found a way to change the look of my hair because that’s what I like. I’m just saying all of this because this talk about self-hate regarding hair is often off-base. Going natural may be a great alternative for some – but not for all.

  • Shaniece

Black people (yes I am Black) need to stop being so damn sensitive about everything. White people have a tendency of referring to children as ‘little creatures”. Maybe if we got out of our neighborhoods and mingled with the rest of the world, we would know that.

  • Jewel17

@Shaniece – people also need to remember that Barbara Walters is truly in her own little “old” world. She is also a germophobe that doesn’t like greet people by shaking their hands. Now for a career journalist, that is bizarre.

  • Crystal

All that matters is that she won her oscar. Congrats Mo’Nique! She officially at diva status!

I agree with Capt’n Backslap….I’ll be glad when tonight is over and Monique’s 15 minutes are up too. Was she REQUIRED to do the interview with Barbara Walters? If she hated the woman so much, she could have just said she didn’t want to interview with her.

It goes to show that everything has a price and Monique is willing to sell out not only herself but her two “little creatures” for an interview that might just give her more publicity.

Barbara lucky she got that interview. Yeah she is a vet in the game but everybody is not gonna stand for her ways. I didn’t think the View cast was feeling Mo’ anyways cause she is a show all by herself and they could see themselves drowning in the wake. Mo’ came up through the comedy game and you have to be thorough and out spoken in that line of work plus she is a STRONG sista so I could see how non-blacks and even some blacks look at her as EXTRA and makes em feel uncomfortable or even threatened. Big up Mo’ you got these folks on edge!

  • Marquis de Sade

The Talking Heads put out an album called Little Creatures, over 20 years ago, whose theme dealt with new parenthood and marriage. Barbara Walter’s referring to Mo’Nique’s lil’ n.!.g.g.l.e.t.s. as Little Creatures was probably more due to a white sub-cultural thing as opposed to somethin’ racist.

No need to thank me for decipherin’ the odd ways of our Caucasian brethren. I’m here to help.

  • Bruh

Some of you here are REALLY sad. Still saying how MoNique refused to do publicity for
“Precious”, when she c-l-e-a-r-l-y did do print interviews as well as a few talkshows in promotion of the film. Yet you refuse to see that. Y’all read an article or two, where it was claimed she didn’t rep the film, and being the negativity loving folk that so many of you are, that is what you chose to run with. Mo, is a big woman, she also is a strong woman, who speaks her mind. Some might see that as abrasive (especially when its a Black person).
The reality is, Mo has a healthy and strong sense of Self. She is no more or less, rude than anyone else. Whenever Blacks present themselves as just as equal and worthy, many Whites interpret that as “cocky” or “rude”, yet
would think nothing of the kind if another White person did it. Sad, that now, some Blacks are adopting that mentality towards their own, too. Mo, has been nothing but humble and gracious, always spreading a message
about love, and loving yourself. The world would likely be a better place if more were like her.

Mo couldn’t win, no matter what she had
chosen to do. Y’all b.itchin’ because she
DID do the interview, but if she hadn’t,
    as some suggested, y’all would’ve b.itched
because she DIDN’T do the interview, with
more of that “she ain’t promoting Precious”
    foolishness.

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

heard about the previous interview but didn’t witness babs calling her kids creatures. whether babs was joking or not, i don’t think she knows mo well enough to talk about her kids and even if she did she needs to learn when to shut up! if mo took offense to it then can you blame her for acting ugly?? she’s lucky she got the interview at all!

  • Well Alright……..

I don’t blame Mo’Nique for not letting that old hag, Barbara Walters, into her home! I didn’t know that Barbara said that about Mo’Nique’s children!

Monique is totally right to be a b*tch. It’s her right. If you think someone is rude or insulting to you who cares if they didn’t mean it as an insult. It shows that just because someone may have made a faux pas doesn’t mean you have to turn the other cheek or kill them with kindness or show you are a better person. No be a rude, ignorant, insulting person, let it be known what a vindictive petty person you can be and that people can get to you if they know how to push the right buttons. Forget to err is human to forgive divine, hold everyone to a high standard then jump in the mud when YOU think they’ve fallen short of that standard. Don’t forget the people you kick on the way up will be kicking you on the way down.

This just goes to show that there are A LOT of racist black ppl, that was more a term of endearment, like rug rats, creatures, monkey, it all comes down to how you take it. So Mo is so filled with racism that she can’t see that. Next time a black term of endearment should every get up in arms. Get over yourself ppl. If Mo didn’t like Barbra then should have said no to the interview instead she acted unprofessional. Not surprised.

If she feels that way about Barbara, why did she give an interview with her?
