I used to work at a clinic. You’d be surprised, people! Girls from 11,12 to 80 would come in on the regular for herpes 2. Herpes is the MOST common STD. It’s more of a stigma than a health threat. It’s a skin condition, and it can’t be transmitted through bodily fluids. A lot of people have it but don’t realize b/c they don’t have active symptoms. 1/4 of all adults have it. Most of the time you have to have an active lesion to test positive b/c the blood tests are not 100%. Also, condoms don’t cover herpes 100%.

The reason this number affects more black women than black men is simple, yes the same men are spreading the diseases to various women. Black women have to make better choices in men. Also the numbers are so different because there are far more black women than there are black men. I think the recent studies show that there are 1.5 to 1.8 million more black women than black men.

Those numbers were alarming to find that 70% of new infections of black women came from sleeping with men who have been imprisoned. As someone who used to conduct research and collect data, you know as well as I do, numbers can be subjective and fudged, DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LOOK TO GET THE DATA AND INFORMATION. If I wanted to counter this study, and pull data and information on white women, I would look in predominately white populated areas where white women go to get treated for STDs to make my case. I’m sure that those numbers would be sky high.

Black women only make up 6% of the U.S. population, but make up 50% of new HIV cases. If we can be so highly over-represented with one STD, what makes us think we wouldn’t be over-represented with another?

At the clinic, we have come to believe that it’s the medical community which is “somewhat” at fault for the indifferent attitude toward this disease. It won’t kill you, it rarely endangers your life or that of you child and by the time most you reach 45+ there is a greater than 75% chance that you will have herpes 1 or 2 because it is that common. Thus, Dr’s worry about things they think are more important and the ignorance in our community about this disease just continues it’s rampage. WE(black folks) like to think of it as “The White Folks disease” because they(by a large margin) get more symptoms than black folks.

And I repeat a condom is not 100% effective against transmission. A herpes outbreak can occur where a condom does not cover, so remember that. I’ve had a few patients tell me that they always wore a condom but still got the disease.

I do not fall in the 48%. Me and my fiance practice safe sex, and even get tested TOGETHER twice a year. Nothing is wrong with knowing your status people.

The way statistics are generated is through taking a sample. The clinics that they are sampling are likely representative of an area that is highly ravaged with poverty, violence, disease, etc. If there were only samples taken from heavily populated areas with poor whites (i.e. trailer parks), the data would also be highly skewed….

I think these statistics are put out by white women. They are making sure black men don’t want anybody but them.

In Hawaii they can look for a cure and the infected will live a peaceful life away from the uninfected population. If U are coming from another country then U will have to HIV testing before U are allowed in this country. Your rejoinder brings up another question. If it’s impossible to look at or test every individual in a population, how did the CDC reach or form the conclusion that nearly half of black women have genital herpes?

I think the IGNORANT INCLINED are reading these stats wrong. The article is not saying 48% of black women have Herpes. Its saying black women are 48% of the recorded cases.

I beleive there is some truth to the numbers. I know of 5 women that are friends of my wife that have it. All of them got it by having unprotected sex. most dudes know when the got it and the still go at it raw doq. All of these women are college graduates with good careers. most got infected after college.

Another fact that many people are missing is that herpes is a disease that tends to affect women more in general, not just black women. It is much more common for a woman to contract herpes from a man than it is for a man to contract it for a woman. I say this to emphasize the point that the study is not just picking on black women, or inferring that black women are more promiscuous than black men.

If black women kept their legs closed and stopped sleeping with every man that flashes cash in there face then maybe the rate wouldn’t be so high. You don’t have to believe statistics, just walk through the area of any hospital with a unit dedicated to HIV/AIDS Care. Walk into a support group full of people newly infected with HIV. I have sat in on a few support group session with HIV infected people and honestly the room was filled with women, many of the minorities. Not because they are more promiscuous, but because they didn’t believe it could happen to them and or they made a bad choice in choosing a sexual partner.

You can see the results for yourself, you don’t need the CDC or CNN.

The article you posted led me to the source of the press release, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This survey combines interviews with physical examinations. The methodology is published on the web. The sample population for 2008 is at:

They used 2,141 non hispanic black women in the 2008 sample. The total sample was 9,976 people.

I doubt this very much….I believe this statistic is a bit misleading. First all, if you know how statistics is computed, they usually use a subset of its target population to come up with a conclusion. This in itself is misleading to the reader because by saying that 48% of black women have herpes (14-49), they may interpret it to mean that you have tested each and every 14-49 black woman in the US, which is impossible. First we much examine the data they used to arrive at this statistic. Who did they test, in which states, are there any outliers that may skew results. Sorry but I just don’t believe this at all.

What does dating a white chick have to do with everyday life that is not answer or a cure and if you are loose with your self no matter what color you date it put everyone in jeopardy… From what I see everyone is most PROMISCUOUS in all shapes, sizes, colors and genders… Men are never exempted from the process as well… When animals starts to have the same sexual decease as humans I guess that will be there fault as well not the faults of the humans that sleep with them so are so unaccountable of the things that we choose to do and it is very sad to say the least..

I think this whole entire post needs to focus on prevention rather than how many has what and who has what. I see an entire thread of people blaming each other just about. But at the same time I think there is some inaccuracy in the numbers I think there are alot more whites with HIV/AIDS than studies lead us to believe.

I remember reading this article that showed many hospitals listing the cause of death for whites who had HIV/AIDS as pneumonia and heart disease and of course you and I know those are complications of HIV/AIDS so shouldn’t the cause of death be HIV/AIDS. With that said how aren’t the number skewed??

I know of course being hands on in the hospital and clinic you’ll see alot for yourself too. We as black people definitely need and can do better.

I am checking the CDC website right now and cannot find a description of the samples used for this study…. no formal write-up of the methods… just the press release.

Given that the CDC gets most of it’s information from public health departments their could be huge regional affects or a sampling bias. Considering that fewer black people go in for routine testing it would make since that nearly half of the women who did come in would be positive, but that cannot be generalized to all black women in the U.S.

I feel that it is extremely important to build a sense of security for our daughters and that we set our expectations firmly for their growth and raising.

I tell my Daughter that I love her as much as I can. Yes, Denial in the black community is strong. Instead of seeing a problem and dealing with that problem hands on and consciously, people in our community deny that there is a problem or they would rather talk about it as if it is just some study and not people’s lives. I have held the hand of a young woman who died alone because she didn’t want her family to know or her church people to find out and mistreat her.

I am borrowing this excerpt that Gimmeabreak provided just to point out one glaring aspect of these reports that is overlooked:

“Dr. Gottlieb and colleagues [examined] questionnaires and HSV-2 blood tests from 4,128 high-risk individuals visiting STD clinics from July 1993 to September 1996 in five U.S. cities – Baltimore, Denver, Long Beach, Newark and San Francisco as part of project RESPECT, a trial evaluating HIV prevention counseling.”

1. Please note these were “high-risk” individuals to begin with

2. These are people visiting the public clinic and thus largely represent the lower SES population

3. It has been reported that blacks are less likely to seek routine check-ups. If “we” go in to the clinic it is for a REASON.

So mid-high SES blacks with access to private health insurance are not included in these stats. These CDC statistics are reporting for low SES groups only.

I agree that we should all use this as a wake-up call. But sites posting this info should report it accurately.

Unfortunately, that fact is true. I know this because I work for a local health department’s sexually transmitted disease program that receives funding from the CDC. When the rapid (20 minute) HSV-2 test came out we were not shocked when roughly 1 out of 4 black women tested were positive without ever having an outbreak. SCARY. Our clinic has been working on a vaccine for HSV 1 and 2 for the past two years. Let’s hope it works. Sad thing about this information is that you can go your whole life without so much as an outbreak that’s why people don’t know. It’s sad that black women are always the number 1 statistic for an STD, but the numbers don’t lie. Each one teach one. Thanks for the post.

To be fair, the report referred to the subjects as a “high-risk” group in general because they were black and female, and thus disporportionately affected, not simply because they participated in “high-risk” activities.

I don’t think that the study referred to at the STD Conference is the correct study. The NHANES is not done by a single doctor.

All stats on STDs are public record if you really give a damn contact your state or local health department or visit http://www.CDC.gov/std. Nobody believed that black women were contracting HIV and an alarming rate either until women started telling their stories. Get real people.

Dr. Gottlieb and colleagues analyzed questionnaires and HSV-2 blood tests from 4,128 high-risk individuals visiting STD clinics from July 1993 to September 1996 in five U.S. cities – Baltimore, Denver, Long Beach, Newark and San Francisco as part of project RESPECT, a trial evaluating HIV prevention counseling.

Overall, 40.8 percent (1,684) of the study participants were infected with HSV-2. Infection rates were higher among women (52 percent) visiting the clinics than men (32 percent), and higher among African Americans (48 percent) than whites (30 percent). Infection rates were high even among African American women who had few lifetime sexual partners. The infection rate for African Americans who had only one or two s-e-x-u-a-l partners during their lifetime was 29.7 percent, compared to 12.9 percent for all other racial groups with one or two lifetime partners.

@ Sweet. Prevention is the key. That is why there is an HPV vaccine given to young girls and women up until age 26. Now it’s the HSV (herpes)virus. And what you guys need to realize is that these numbers are from those who have actually been tested. So if you’ve never been tested you really don’t know. Also everytime someone tests positive for an STD and are treated, that information is given to the local/state health department and they inturn send it to the CDC, why??? So they can receive funding from the CDC to continue programs, outreach and research on STDs. Ok I’m done. Once again each one teach one. Later yall.

I think that black men not going to the doctor has several layers.

First, a history of broken trust.
Second, they just don’t want to know. I have tried several times to get young black men to get tested when the come in to see me. Most refuse because they just don’t want to know and they don’t want to have to deal with knowing and telling their families because of the way black people treat other black people who are gay or have diseases.

Third, financial a lot of brothers are misinformed about their health care options ad feel like they can not afford to go to the doctor.

But mainly I think it’s fear of acknowledging that they are irreversibly sick.

There are human beings in EVERY race that are being affected by curable and incurable STDS around the world daily. Being skeptical about this post does not mean that I don’t believe that we ALL need to be educated and informed about the dangers of STDs, prevention, and treatment. That is not was this post is trying to do. It’s presented in the same way that every other post against the Black woman has been worded. If we’re going to discuss the problem of STDs for everyone, then let’s do that. Has anyone been to or worked in the clinics, doctor’s offices, hospitals, etc. in areas where the majority of the patients are white, latino, asian, etc.? If so, how did that compare to your experiences in these places with a large Black population?

I do think the reason for wide spread homophobia particularly in the black community is caused by the sometimes hateful rantings of preachers in the black church. There are countless examples and news articles, that discuss this.

No not all churches preach so negatively against homosexuality. But the ones that do have shaped our community’s ideas about sin, right and wrong.

That type of lambasting of gay people from the pulpit cause black gay men to hide who they are so that they are accepted by their communities that are largely influenced by the church.

When these men feel like they have to hide so they wont be looked at by their church and family as sinners or abominations, they get married. They are with women to please the people around them yet creep with men instead of just being who they are.

I don’t think all churches are to blame but they hold the spiritual responsibility and ability to help heal and fix things.

A lot DL or in the closet gay man say that they did not or have not come out because of fear that the people that they love wouldn’t love them any more because of their religious beliefs.

I personally believe God loves every one and that we are all sinners.

I hear you. I just need to see the methodology. My understanding of CDC’s reporting of STD stats is that they gather the data from health departments. Which is still likely to provide a skewed sample of high risk, low income individuals seeking (in the case of black patients) acute care. Now, if NHANES actually polled a random, extremely large sample from all regions of the U.S. and 48% of the black female respondents endorsed having HSV-2, then that’s a different story altogether.

Has anyone notice that there are programs out here and CNN continues to air stories on “Saving Young Black Men” programs and others like these. Even radio personality Michael Baisden is starting programs to save young black youths (including girls).

You don’t see programs about “Saving young white men” because most of them train their boys at home. Black men are the only race who don’t raise their boys right and they leave it to society to do it.

This is because black men are lost mentally, emotionally, physically, and any other way you can think of. Black men are also very gullible and only live for today, immediate gratification and they don’t want to work hard for anything. They do not plan for themselves or their family for 10, 30, or 50 years from now. This is one of the major reason why black men can be so easily manipulated by media, music, and Becky…..They are one of the weakest and dumbest species known to man-kind.

Most of these health articles are misleading, and some aren’t accurate. If researchers and scientists wanted to present their systematic investigations as methodologically sound, they’d issue the full journals and not just brief abstracts. But, I understand why.

Blacks are validated in questioning the statistics put out by white folks – especially when such data is subjective.

This is a prime example of psychological warfare.

It is about time we start rejecting and challenging the lies of white folks.

I know firsthand about the situation you’re describing. A few years ago, one my aunts was befallen by some serious health issues and testing revealed that she had AIDS. Since she had been faithful to her husband and not used drugs, she confronted her husband who admitted to occ.a.s.s.ional dalliances with men. This is a man to whom she had been married for over 30 years and with whom she’d had 4 children. He was subsequently tested and found to be afflicted as well. He died 2 years later, and she died the year after him. It was quite a devastating experience for our family, since she had always been someone who was attentive to her family/friends and extremely active in her church. Yet, she found herself with AIDS through no fault of her own from a man to whom she had pledged her life.

Yeah, my father, and his friends have met women with similar stories, and occurrences in their lives. There was also a woman who posted on here over a month ago about contracting HIV from a man in a healthy relationship, and she is now living with full blown AIDs, I believe. Just as women sleeping with men who portray condemnable qualities, they are also women being affected by their own significant others, and what they thought was a stable marriage or relationship.

The CDC is the same agency that in 2004 vastly overstated the number of obesity-related deaths in the nation, and I believe there have been other errors as well. My best friend is a divorce attorney and she’s told me that several of her female clients have claimed that their husbands infected them with herpes. Black people have been kept uneducated and poor in this country by the white majority for most of it’s history. Scientific discoveries require education, time and economic backing. Three things that have been denied to black people in our history. It is not coincidence that most Nobel prizes are won and inventions are created in economically successful countries. Blacks have exelled in all fields where they have been given an equal playing field. I have no doubt the same will be true in science.

Wow. Where was I when this thread was posted? I’m surprised Dr. Drake failed to mention where they get these numbers.

Public clinics, which get federal funding, which is where a large number of black women get treated are where these numbers come from! Since these places are partially funded by federal organizations, the percentages are PUBLIC information.

Then there are private practices which are just that, PRIVATE! Some black women, like myself, visit private doctors to get my annual screenings and I know my information was not included in this study. the finding and percentages from private docs aren’t ever shared which is why, I believe, the numbers are disproportionate.

Again, I’m shocked that the doctor failed to mention this!

I am a Registered Nurse and you can’t tell me that these statisics are not skewed. The CDC relys heavily on reporting from local health clinics, local health departments, and places like planned parenthood. These types of health facilities will comply with reporting herpes cases more so than a private doctor. The uninsured and underinsured are more likely to use these types of facilities because they offer free or reduced prices on their services. I work in a local health center and unfortunately most of the people that use our services are on state Medicaid or have no insurance. I have to give the speech on using condoms with each sexual encounter frequently. Unfortunately, I have seen repeat offenders come back not once, not twice, but three times to be treated for STDs. They will not be happy until they contract HIV.

So as one of the few other medical professionals on this board, I am shocked to see all of the comments here.
1. Yes, the CDC did not ask every single black person in America for their herpes status. This is virtually impossible – for any statistical study. So for those of us who went to college and took a decent statistics course, what you try to do is take a sample that is representative of the entire population, and draw your conclusions based on that information. Now, is it the best method – absolutely not. But let’s think before we start crying conspiracy theory.

2. I concur with Dr. Drake; from my clinical experience, the stories that I encounter of black women and herpes/HIV is unbelievable. And for the record, I work in a top 10 medical school academic environment that is ethnically diverse.

3. Whether the numbers are a bit elevated or not, the issue remains – BLACK WOMEN (and all women) NEED TO BE CAREFUL. Herpes is transmitted through SEXUAL CONTACT – a condom is not enough protection! And you can transmit it even if you do not have any visible sores, or haven’t had an outbreak for years.

What a lot of people forget is that cold sores are the same virus and according to “statistics” 80% of people (young and old) have it.It is a highly contagious disease that not even a condom can protect you against. As long as there is skin contact there is a great possibility of getting it.Many people don’t know that they have it and sometimes they get one break out and never get it again. But they can still infect others.And for every1 who thinks this is a dirty disease it isn’t. I got it when I was 17 from an ex boyfriend I was with for 3 yrs. And not even he knew he had it.I suffered alot and ended up staying in an abusive relationship because I thought no one would want me. But All praises to God I am now married to a man who is uninfected and fully aware of my condition. And no I don’t take Valtrex. I try to stay au natural. It’s not life threatening if anything it’s an annoyance. Like the big red zit that you get right before your period.

careful with the stat. that article headline is misleading. the cdc report is from a study done in 1999 and reported that testing was done on HIGH RISK individuals visiting health clinics. of those visitors 40% had herpes. of those with herpes, 52% were women, and of those women, 48% were black. also note that this survey was conducted in only 5 cities. total people surveyed 4000. only 800 people per city.

this is completely different from saying 48% of ALL black women have herpes.

if you’d like a global stat we should do the math properly. 4000 people surveyed means 1600 people had herpes. 832 were women. 399 were black women. without knowing what % of those tested were black women you cannot conclude what % of the black female population has herpes. the only thing you can conclude is that 10% of high risk individuals that visit clinics in those 5 cities are black women with herpes.

Out of the 700 plus comments posted here, the most interesting is that not one person admits to having it which I put any kinda money towards the fact that that’s not true. In fact, I bet more than a third have it and maybe even a few more that may have it and don’t even know.

This report needs to be looked into. The findings were based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Each person they survey is supposed to represent 50,000 others? Bearing in mind Black Women are from a minority group, I bet less than 500 African American women were surveyed – It’s crazy. Why the report is even looking at this issue from a color perspective I will never know. Herpes is not a race specific illness, there may be a suggested prevalence rate of 48% amongst black women but if we look at the number of people actually suffering there are just under 30 million White people and just over 15 million Black people, surely there’s a common link amongst ALL the sufferers?
