What Was The Deal With The Lady Who Pulled A “Kanye” At The Oscars?

We’ve done a lot of Oscar talk this week, but one story we haven’t covered was that “Kanye moment” when Music by Prudence producer Elinor Burkett interrupted Short Film winner Roger Ross Williams’ Oscar acceptance speech. Williams directed and produced the film, about a disabled Zimbabwean musician, but barely got any words out before he was interrupted by Elinor Burkett, another producer of the film. Pop the hood for the story behind what happened.

In a post-speech interview with Salon Burkett explained the pair had a disagreement over the “direction of the film” and that she was late to the podium because Williams’ mother used a cane to keep her from the stage.

BURKETT: What happened was [Williams] and I had a bad difference over the direction of the film that resulted in a lawsuit that has settled amicably out of court. But there have been all these events around the Oscars, and I wasn’t invited to any of them. And he’s not speaking to me. So we weren’t even able to discuss ahead of the time who would be the one person allowed to speak if we won. And then, as I’m sure you saw, when we won, he raced up there to accept the award. And his mother took her cane and blocked me. So I couldn’t get up there very fast.

BURKETT: The movie was my idea. I live in Zimbabwe. Roger had never even heard of Zimbabwe before I told him about this. And you know, I felt my role in this has been denigrated again and again, and it wasn’t going to happen this time.

Williams disagreed with Burkett’s version of events:

WILLIAMS: Only one person is allowed to accept the award. I was the director, and she was removed from the project nearly a year ago, but she was able to still qualify as a producer on the project, and be an official nominee. But she was very angry — she actually removed herself from the project – because she wanted more creative control.

WILLIAMS: I just expected her to stand there. I had a speech prepared.

She claims she found the movie’s story, that she brought it to you.

WILLIAMS: No, not at all. The truth is that she saw the band perform [in Zimbabwe], and told me about that, and then I opened up a dialogue with the [King George VI School & Centre for Children with Physical Disabilities] school and went on my own – which you would’ve heard about in my speech — and spent $6,000 going to Africa shooting myself. And when people expressed interest in the film, I asked her to come on board. And then I regretted that decision. Then she sued.

Did your mother try and block her with her cane?

WILLIAMS: My mother got up to hug me. And my mother is 87 years old. She was excited.

What are people saying about it?

They’re saying it looked like she pulled a Kanye.

WILLIAMS: She did! She pulled a Kanye. And it’s a shame, because this is such positive, happy film.

So who do you believe???? Was Burkett wrong, or is Williams lying? And is there some swirl lovin’ gone wrong at the bottom of this???

She disagreed with the direction of the film that ultimately won an Oscar thanks to the direction Williams to the film so she has a lot of nerve getting up there to try and accept credit. She should be ashamed of herself!

    Cosign.

Seriously, though, all the people thinking that this should/will receive Kanye West-level media coverage are dreaming. I’m willing to bet that few of you ever heard of these two before the Oscars, and furthermore, I’m willing to bet that few of you are on the lookout for their next projects. They are both pretty obscure figures in the entertainment industry fighting over an Oscar in an obscure category.

  • Just Sit And Be Pretty

I found the whole thing funny. This is Hollyweird people and there’s probably more to these back stories we’re not getting. Frankly, that scene made the boring awards show a tad bit more interesting. LOL, when he was on Larry King, he tried to give the same speech and once again…was interrupted. Pure comedy. They’ll both be alright.*shrugging*

  • BLACK HERMAN THE MAGICIAN

co-sign @those who are wondering where her kanye -like media beat down is….erry body knows that a white woman is sacrosanct in america…especially when she is in conflict with a black man

  • Wreckless Driver

At the risk of the usual retaliatory responses, the PRODUCER is who get the award when a film wins. If its Best Picture,Best Foreign Film,Best Documentary, whatever! The Producer is the one who actually wins the award. If the Director is also the producer, meaning he FINANCED the project, then he he gets the award. I don’t know, who is telling the truth, but if she has a producers credit on the film, then she had a right to be up there.

  • Such a Fu* king Lady

Thst mess was too funny he flew down them stairs fast as hell but In all realnesss she didn’t even give the man enough time to even acknowledge anybody else. Her speech wasn’t even about nothing. Prudence should have beeen the only one Kanye Westing the stage.

  • http://abe@gmail.com Crazy but she still deserved credit

Some of you are missing my point. This guy didn’t come up with this idea out of nowhere. that’s why her argument held up in court and they settled out of court. If you came up with an idea, and your friend who is a filmaker decides to work with you, then takes over, runs you over and claims all of the credit for everything you’d act crazy too, lol. This broad was wrong for acting a fool on the stage, but I still think there’s more to this story, and saying he never heard of zimbabwe is a figure of speech. He obviously trusted this woman enough to follow her idea and suggestion and look into the zimbabwe woman who’s story the film is about. Read thrice. reply once. If you disagree, read their interview again. she’s not some weirdo stranger he doesn’t know. he’s only making her look crazy after the fact.
