Congratulations To Englewood Urban Prep’s Class Of 2010!!! Chicago Boys Break Stereotypes By Being Model Students

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! After all the negative news about young black men in Chicago, we are so proud to share this story about an all-male charter high school where the entire class is not just graduating, they’ve also all been admitted to four-year colleges. Pop the hood for A Lil Positivity!

Four years ago, Bryant Alexander watched his mother weep.

She stared down at a muddle of D’s and F’s on his eighth-grade report card and threatened to kick him out. He had barely passed elementary school, and high school wasn’t even on his radar.

“Something just clicked,” Alexander, now 18, said. “I knew I had to do something.”

On Friday, Alexander proudly swapped his high school’s red uniform tie for a striped red and gold one — the ritual at Englewood’s Urban Prep Academy for Young Men that signifies a student has been accepted into college.

As the Roseland resident and 12 others tied their knots, Chicago’s only public all-male, all-African-American high school fulfilled its mission: 100 percent of its first senior class had been accepted to four-year colleges.

Mayor Richard Daley and city schools chief Ron Huberman surprised students at the all-school assembly Friday morning with congratulations, and school leaders announced that as a reward, prom would be free.

The achievement might not merit a visit from top brass if it happened at one of the city’s elite, selective enrollment high schools. But Urban Prep, a charter school that enrolls all comers in one of Chicago’s most beleaguered neighborhoods, faced much more difficult odds.

Only 4 percent of this year’s senior class read at grade level as freshmen, said Tim King, the school’s founder and CEO.

“There were those who told me that you can’t defy the data,” King said. “Black boys are killed. Black boys drop out of high school. Black boys go to jail. Black boys don’t go to college. Black boys don’t graduate from college.

“They were wrong,” he said.

Every day, before attending advanced placement biology classes and lectures on changing the world, students must first pass through the neighborhood, then metal detectors.

“Poverty, gangs, drugs, crime, low graduation rates, teen pregnancy — you name it, Englewood has it,” said Kenneth Hutchinson, the school’s director of college counseling, who was born and raised in Englewood.

He met the students the summer before they began their freshman year during a field trip to Northwestern University, the first time many of them had ever stepped foot on a college campus. At the time, Hutchinson was Northwestern’s assistant director of undergraduate admissions. Inspired by what he’d seen, he started working for Urban Prep two months later.

“I’m them,” he said Friday as he fought back tears. “Being accepted to college is the first step to changing their lives and their communities.”

Hutchinson plays a major role in the school, where college is omnipresent. Students are assigned college counselors from day one. To prepare students for the next level, the school offers a longer than typical day — about 170,000 minutes longer, over four years, than other city schools — and more than double the usual number of English credits, King said

Even the school’s voice-mail system has a student declaring “I am college-bound” before asking callers to dial an extension.

The rigorous academic environment and strict uniform policy of black blazers, red ties and khakis isn’t for everyone. The first senior class began with 150 students. Of those who left, many moved out of the area and some moved into neighborhoods that were too dangerous to cross to get to the school, King said. Fewer than 10 were expelled or dropped out, he said.

At last count, the 107 seniors gained acceptance to a total of 72 different colleges, including Northwestern University, Morehouse College, Howard University, Rutgers University and University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Alexander was accepted to DePaul University.

While college acceptance is an enormous hurdle to jump, school leaders said they know their job isn’t done; they want to make sure the students actually attend.

To that aim, King said, staff made sure that every student has completed the dreaded Free Application for Federal Student Aid, lest the red tape deter them.

Later in the year, the school plans to hold a college signing day where every student is to sign a promise to go to college, he said. Staff will stay in touch through the summer and hopefully in the first years of school.

“We don’t want to send them off and say, ‘Call us when you’re ready to make a donation to your alma mater,’ ” King said. “If we fulfill our mission, that means they not only are accepted to college, but graduate from it.”

For now, students are enjoying the glow of reaching their immediate goal.

Normally, it takes 18-year-old Jerry Hinds two buses and 45 minutes to get home from school. On the day the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana was to post his admission decision online at 5 p.m., he asked a friend to drive him to his home in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

He went into his bedroom, told his well-wishing mother this was something he had to do alone, closed the door and logged in.

“Yes! Yes! Yes!” he remembers screaming. His mother burst in and began crying.

That night he made more than 30 phone calls, at times shouting “I got in” on his cell phone and home phone at the same time.

“We’re breaking barriers,” he said. “And that feels great.”

This is incredibly moving.

We swear we’re not soft, but keeping it all the way 100 — somebody pass us some tissue cuz we really just might cry y’all.

This is what happens when you have good parents who take an interest in their child’s education and well-being…they excel. They will win at life and be better able to cope and make a positive contribution to society. Even if you only have one parent you can still go a good job raising children if you are nuturing and place their needs above your own. Education Education Education is the best way to lift yourself out of poverty.

Some good news. Plus my friend go to this school his a Junior.

  • Fred

Unfortunately a group of 30 black boys doing what every other boy does everyday is not enough to erase the damage that generations before them has done.

Until black men start raising their OWN kids, all this means nothing.

Well said, the schools can’t do it all by themselves. Parents have to be proactive concerning their kids education. My 10 yr old son knows to bring home all his books even if he doesn’t have homework from his teacher. He knows there is always homework from me. He will stay ahead so he can get ahead.

  • Jane Doe

    Great to hear!!!

  • shay

This article means a whole lot. I’m very proud of them and all black men can definitely do the same! I am soooo glad my father made my lil brother go to this school. He was already highly intelligent before he went there because Bogan was below his standards. Now they need an all female school like this. Or as a matter of fact ALL Chicago Public Schools Need to do what they are doing, follow their guidelines, follow their curriculum and all of our kids in Chicago will gradute when they are supposed to and be on top of their game.

  • How come you can’t think?

Yes! These young men have shown what comes naturally to US- when we’re not distracted by frivolity, go ‘head young men I am SOOOO proud of you!

Yes!!! These type of Charter schools are the future, they are incredibly successful in DC.
Good job men, way to do yourselves and your people proud!!!

You are absolutely right. Might I add that we don’t necessarily need government intervention to do better by our children either. It doesn’t cost anything to turn off B.E.T., or put the XBox away during the school week, and make your child pick up a book instead. If more parents raise their expectations, more kids will meet them.

  • Monica

This is beautiful, as a Black Woman I am so proud of these Young Black Mens’ accomplishments. This shows that there is no excuse for being uneducated and ignorant. It shows that you don’t have to be born a genius to succeed, all you have to do is study, work hard, and stay focus on your goals and you can make it in life.

Education is the key to our success, and existance as Black people. We have to be able to read and write and express ourselves so that we can have a voice to speak up on issues and represent our Black people in order to move our Black Race forward in this world in a positive way. We don’t need these ignorant ghetto fool thugs, athletes & rappers as roles models, we need these wonderful great Black Young Men to be the role models for our children, our survival depends on this. Peace.

  • nyob

There have been two stories recently about black children exceling academically and we could use more of the same so that some of our misguiided youth can see that school and intelligence is not trying to be “white”.

With all of the inventions that black people have produced (some of the old ones are still in existence) it amazes me that some of our youth fall for that BS and have fallen for this illogical fallacy.

Over 40 years ago, Englewood was my neighborhood and it’s decline saddens me. But I thank some of my teachers who motivated me and taught me how to read, write and strive (back in those days Ebonics was a no-no, in fact there was no such word (it was referred to as bad English)).

Congratulations to these gentleman, may they stay on track in the years to come. This is an awesome accomplishment.

  • Duuhhh

Good job… but this isn’t any great news..
Kids r supposed to attend high school in order to graduate and then head on to college. Nothing “grebout that. In Cameroon (Africa), high schools have been scoring consistent 100% graduation rates for years on, and ain’t no Mayors coming to pat these kids on their backs.

My message: set that bar a little higher. Graduating from high school ain’t sh*t.

I agree with the folks in here saying that this shouldn’t be out of the norm and is something that many of us see all the time, but these young men are exceptional because of all the odds they had working AGAINST them. The article outlined everything they deal with on a daily basis and it is easy to get caught up and distracted with this stuff. But, these young men stayed focused and accomplished a very big goal. Shoot, I lived in a nice surburban area and went to a good high school where the black to white ratio was about 40% black 60% white and I can tell you that the graduation and college acceptance rate was nowhere near 100%. So, let’s commend these young men for their accomplishments and stay positive so that they can continue on and make a difference in our world…

  • Taisha from Chicago!

I really warms my heart to know that the all male Englewood prep school is churning out success in these young men and teaching them to think about their futures and how the choices they make right now affects that journey. I used to live in Englewood and before the academy opened their was a lot of backlash and negative talk from the community and even some educators themselves. I heard with my own ears one music teacher who just couldn’t imagine an all male school in an urban area producing anything SXCEPT

  • B3 Fearless

I did just get teary eyed.

Thank you Lord some positive news about some positive young African American men and good for the school to have a process to follow up with the boys to make sure that they attend their first year of college.

Maybe other public charter schools around the country need to take heed.

And this achievement was due to hard work from the school’s administration, teachers, the students and the parents. It truly is a team effort!

    God bless them!

  • Taisha from Chicago!

continued…. except homosexual men. So I am pleased that this school in a success and proving the nay sayer’s wrong & these young men are being lead in the right direction and on a path of hope and promise.

  • Gypsy

Obama and Bernie Duncan the former Chicago education chief are friends because they worked together to correct the Chicago education system problems for young Blacks, this was when President Obama was a State Senator, then when he became a Federal Senator he directed Federal funds to the Chicago education system under Bernie Duncan, then when he became President he took Bernie Duncan to Washington with him and make him the Education head and gave him Billions to do what he did in Chicago for the rest of the country.

So, Glok – Don’t try to use this as a excuse to attack President Obama, it’s not going to work idiot.

This is an awesome story that should be the rule and not the exception for young black men. Hopefully their school can become a prototype for others across the country =)

  • http://www.twitter.com/GOTSTRONG BicycleCrazy

This is a great story. The kids, parents & faculty deserve a ton of praise. However, I wonder when stories like this will become the norm & not the exception. We all know what needs to be done, the blueprint has been available to us for years, but it was repeated in the story. Provide a positive learning environment. Enforce a dress code. Provide positive self images. These concepts have been known and in practice for over a hundred years. However, society has gotten caught up in “allowing my child to express himself”, be it sagging, cornrows, or poor grammer. Also, when lil Johnny refuses to learn, it blame the white man time. It’s 2010, timeout for excuses. Once again, good job young men, hard work pays off !

  • VeraQT

This is the type of story that should be broadcast throughout the world. Media is so quick to show when black men fuq up (Chris Brown, Tiger Woods, Allen Iverson.. need I say more?) that when excellence comes, its considered “taboo”. Go boyz from the Chi!!!

  • HALLELUJAH

Bless the Lord for some good news. It’s gospel!

  • Glok is an example of why good black men have it so hard–empty barrels make the most noise!

Everybody on this thread is praising these young men for achieving such a wonderful goal and dismantling the stereotypes of black men being stupid and disrespctful.

Then of course, Glok shows up to ruin it all by insulting the President and calling Gypsy (who is probably a black woman) degrading names.

Two steps forward and three steps back. SMH

Great article! The mainstream media ignores these types of stories. The media would lead you to believe that 90% of blacks are no good instead of 10%. Look at yourself, your friends, family and neighbors for reality and truth.

I used to live on the South Side of the Chi and to hear about the success of these kids considering how violent that neighborhood is and all the negativity that surronds it is amazing. The area is only 4 square miles and they have had over 700 murders in the last 10 years which is simply deplorable and by the way this is the area that Jennifer Hudson grew up in and the place of the homicides of her family members so congrats young brothers and good luck in the future. I LOVE this story!! This is the kind of story that should be the “Breaking News” story, not another murder or robbery. This is should be posted on every child’s mirror just so that he/she can see that there is so much more in store for them! It’s a constant struggle just to survive and I am so glad that there are people out there who actually give a damn from the beginning, middle and the end! Thank you for such a wonderful and inspiring story!

    To:Glok…Book of Obama, Chapter bullchit!

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! You are ranting, not making a complete sentence…actually not making any sense at all. English is not that hard at all. And what does Pres. Obama have to do with this? Did you miss his televised speech stating what we as parents should expect from our children and as parents what we should expect from ourselves? Maybe you should enroll in the program if it is not too late, but then again it is NEVER too late. Stop being so mean! Turn that negative energy into something positive and worthwhile!

  • I’mJustSayin’

After reading this story it was proud moment to be Black, to know that your children (because they are all our children) took a pledge to better themselves and not give up. Life is all you have. You owe it to yourself to be the best that you can be. We will always be judged and under the microscope of others. Today I want everyone to examine the evidence and secure the ingredients to continue this and establish a legacy for other youth to feed off of. And to the mentors who set the course thank you so much for taking your time to care enough to step outside the box
