  4. Say What?! 3/11/10, 11:28:PM

Vanessa and Joy got it right! That is why I did not go see the movie, i’m tired of white saviors. Anyway, they only took him in because he played football, I bet that wasn’t in the movie.

  5. deenscene 3/11/10, 11:29:PM

no they shut vanessa williams down. its true that it is a cliche story but we have a cliche system. white people saving ghetto poor black people. Art imitates life. this kind of stuff happens in real life and its kind of sad that black people cant help themselves. always some white people doing it.

  6. cem 3/12/10, 12:16:AM

Vanessa was right on target. I don’t know why people think whites have to save us.

  7. Ray 3/12/10, 01:23:AM

    Vanessa knows Hollywood!

    Note: EVERY black Oscar winner,plays a sub~role to a white.(Honoring a white cause)

Denzel won Oscar for playing a thug!
Halle won an Oscar for getting screwed!

    Must i go on?

Vanessa..come back to Marina Del Rey baby! We need you!

    Love you!
    xoxo

  8. real black is chocolate 3/12/10, 01:54:AM

    LOL but she’s not black!!

  9. Mr.uPPeR CuTTs 3/12/10, 01:56:AM

Vanessa know what she talkin bout. Sh^t bothered me a bit, but the movie was a nice gesture though.

  10. Wow 3/12/10, 02:42:AM

I agree in totality with Vanessa and the other lady who agreed was on point too…The blonde one I swear I can’t stand her, ‘they were republican’

  11. White folks helped her 3/12/10, 03:47:AM

without white folks helping her she’d be nothing but a porn star or a school teacher like her mother.

she has a lot of nerve criticizing white people for helping poor blacks, because negroes with affirmative action money sure ain’t dong it.

  12. eyesrthesoul 3/12/10, 05:46:AM

I don’t think Vanessa is upset about the fact that the whites are helping black people in these movies, she’s just saying we’re all tired of seeing so many movies about how white people are so generous towards poor, unfortunate black folk. Why do all the heartwarming movies like “Radio” and “The Blind Side” reach such critical acclaim, and the closest black people ever get to saving the day for white people is mammy type roles like “Corinna, Corrinna”? Why not make a movie about The Riding Family, a black couple who fosters children, has biological children of their own, and adopted a white girl, whose mother was a prostitute, that no one else would take? Or how about more movies about the black people that didn’t have some nice white family around to help them? Like Khadijah Williams, the homeless girl who got into Harvard? Or maybe, just one tell it like it is movie, about Anita Tedaldi, the white woman who adopted a black baby and gave him back after almost 2 years, claiming she “couldn’t bond” with him? No, movies like this are reserved for white Hollywood. The only movies that white people want to see black people in are gritty, tearjerkers about “the rise from the ghetto”. I just would like to see black people being recognized for movies where the hero or heroine is doing something other than “being saved by white folks” or spending half the movie on their backs. I’m happy that there are so many generous people of all colors out there helping each other, so let’s see more than one portrayed.

  13. oli 3/12/10, 06:59:AM

i am SOOO TIRED of this!! every race (hispanic, white and especially black) want to pull the race card on EVERYTHING. poor victims it was a true story of michael oher and his “family” and the color of skin does not define them as a family their love and support did!. it’s 2010 and everyone wants to be considered equal but its black race that that always wants to be singled out and put every other race down. no one is better than anyone if the roles were reversed and it would of been a white guy taken in by a black family everyone would want to praise it BUT its the SAME story but you wouldn;t get tired of that would you??!!! THINK PEOPLE OPEN YOUR MINDS

  14. eyesrthesoul 3/12/10, 08:36:AM

Oli, I think you’re missing the point. It was a true story and a great movie. No one said it wasn’t. The whole point IS about being open minded. “If the roles were reversed”? In Hollywood, they rarely are. I would get tired of it if every other movie I watched was about a family of minorities helping some poor white kid. We have plenty of great movies where we see white people helping the unfortunate. Other races? Not so much. It doesn’t have anything to do with the “pulling the race card” it’s making an observation. The Blind Side deserves its props, and I don’t believe in bringing people of ANY race down. My mother didn’t raise me to be a bigot. I would just like to see the day when all races are equally represented in Hollywood.

  15. pat 3/12/10, 08:39:AM

vanessa has a point…..white actress wins best actress for a movie where she saved the poor black boi

black one, monique, wins for beating down her own race……lol

dont think anyone’s playing a race card…its just calling it like it is

  16. Eyre 3/12/10, 09:14:AM

fOR FOLKS SAYN SHE’S NOT BLACK, LET ME HIP YA’LL TO SOMETHING. IF YOU ARE MIXED WITH BLACK, EVEN DURING SLAVERY, THE BLACKS TOOK YOU IN, RECOGNIZED YOU AS THEIR OWN. SHE KNOWS WHERE SHE COMES FROM AND THE DISCRIMINATION SHE GETS FROM BOTH SIDE BUT MRE SO, THE BLACK COMMUNITY WAS AND IS THE ONLY THING SHE KNOWS AND IS SUPPORTED BY. SECOND, SHE IS TOTALLY RIGHT ON. BLIND SIDE VERSUS PRECIOUS. LET’S THINK ABOUT IT!

  17. aleximaq 3/12/10, 09:50:AM

I saw the movie with my son. Love Michael’s story….no other Rookie or player for that matter, life story has had such an impact on this society. I am glad that family came along a saved him from all the trappings set up for him. He was given opportunities that he would not have even been able to think about had not this particular family came along and took him in. I really believe Leigh Anne Tuohy LOVES herself some Michael….I know she does…and now he knows what love feels like and how he can give it back to other people…that is what is important.

  18. peaches 3/12/10, 10:50:AM

It is very ironic how Barbara and Elizabeth have the same view and Vanessa and Joy share a similar view. Vanessa is right and Barbara is still stuck in the past. I wonder was she thinking like that when she was with that black Senator Brooke when she broke up his marriage. Barbara and Elizabeth have such a hidden racist attitude. They are the one’s that is blind sided. I agree with Vanessa and I am tired of these: “here I come to save the day white folks”. How about a picture where the white people are slaves and gettin the same type of treatment that black people used to get.

  19. Sticky-n-Sweet 3/12/10, 10:56:AM

Good point to whomever said that if he hadn’t played sports, either no one would be interested in the story, or no one would have taken him in. White Hollywood likes to perpetuate a certain image of Black people on screen. If they can feel sorry for us in a role, they will certainly praise it. Hattie McDaniels was a trained opera singer, but got the most respect for playing a maid. Denzel’s best performance ever was as Malcolm X, but he got two Oscars, one for being a slave, and one for being a crooked cop. Halle got hers for being a down on her luck woman who needed a White man to “make her feel good.” Cuba got his for being an athlete with a bad attitude and needing some slick talking White man to help get his money right. Now Mo’Nique gets one for being a horrible mom. The list goes on and on and on… right on Vanessa, we don’t need another movie about a White family “saving the day”, we need films recognze us as more than athletes from troubled homes, crack heads, whores, slaves, thugs and maids!

  20. RosarioRed 3/12/10, 12:13:PM

If Precious had been about a girl who was abused and captured by a white person and tortured, then saved by a black woman (this being Mo’) would Mo still have won? I don’t know. Its interesting how in the movie Precious, all of the characters or most who were considered good and positive were either white (Carey) or mixed (Patton/Kravitz). Don’t get me wrong I <3 PPatton and Kravits is gorgeous, but that sends out a bad msg. Seriously.

  21. real black is chocolate 3/12/10, 12:25:PM

    Eyre

lol suck my black d’ck and go back to your white ppl with your MIXED azz!

  22. Ray 3/12/10, 12:28:PM

If you cretins DON”T agree with what Vanessa said, you are:

1.Too young to know real racism.
2.Trying too hard to be “equal”, when in fact, whites hate your existence.
    3.Look at 1. and 2. a thousand times!

i also read that some cretin said that Vanessa isn’t black! ???

    And the curse continues!
    xoxo

  23. Ray 3/12/10, 12:31:PM

    @ real black is chocolate

What’s with the cursing? Are you just trying to get responses from people?

Real black people are kind, loving, and strong!

Oh! And we come in a lot of hues!
    peace!

  24. True Diva 3/12/10, 12:34:PM

    @ Sticky Sweet

u r so on point, Vanessa hit the nail on the head!

  25. Shay 3/12/10, 01:06:PM

Yea I can’t take anymore white savior shows or movies. It started with Different Strokes and then went out of control. The funny part about these “sport adoptions” is the kids often don’t have a real problem at their home. This happens all over the US. White hick town schools paying parents and unofficial adopted parents to house gifted athelets so they can play sports. I witnessed this as a B-ball mgr for my schools boys team and also a friend who’s two siblings lived with a white family on the sticks so they could play b-ball at the 99% white school. Their family was stable and their dad had a good job.

The crazy part to this is when our team would visit these white schools with 1 star black player (some of them I went to school with in the innercity and came from good homes) the people at the game would be nasty and racist to us. Calling us the *n* word while they’re school is paying to have a black player play for them and he’s the best player on the team.

  26. Somali Ninga 3/12/10, 01:11:PM

    Gabby should’ve won!!!
    Vanessa and Joy is right!!!

  27. Shay 3/12/10, 01:11:PM

^^ I’ll also add that I hope mag does an investigation to find out how this “adoption” went down. Also just to clarify I don’t know too many black schools who are sponsoring adoptions. Not to say their hands aren’t dirty. Usually the b-ball coaches will drive to other districts to pick up the kids and take them to school. They only post the address of someone who lives in the schools district but they don’t live there with that family.

  28. TRU_TO_ALL 3/12/10, 01:28:PM

    @ EYESRTHESOUL
YOU’RE A VERY INTELLIGENT WOMAN, IT’S NOT EVERYDAY THAT I STUMBLE UPON AN INTELLIGENT COMMENT. I COULDN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE ABOUT HOW BLACKS AND MANY RACES BESIDES WHITES ARE PORTRAYED IN HOLLYWOOD. WHAT MANY PEOPLE FOR TO REALIZE THAT THE WAY HOLLYWOOD PORTRAYS US IN MOVIES AND ON TELEVISION IT HAS A STRONG NEGATIVE IMPACT ON US GLOBALLY. PEOPLE IN CHINA, EASTERN EUROPE AND OTHER COUNTRIES THAT ARE PRETTY MUCH SHELTERED FROM THE WORLD AROUND THEM SEE THESE NEGATIVE AND DEGRADING IMAGES US AND BELIEVE THAT’S HOW WE TRULY ARE IN REAL LIFE. MOVIES, TELEVISION AND THE MEDIA HAVE A HUGE IMPACT ON HOW PEOPLE SEE US AND PORTRAY US. AND FOR THE REAL BLACK IS CHOCOLATE INVIDUAL, YOU MUST HAVE A THIRD GRADE EDUCATION, BECAUSE YOU ARE EXTREMELY IGNORANT AND EVERYONE BLACK PERSON IN THIS COUNTRY HAS A LITTLE WHITE IN THEM, I DON’T CARE HOW DARK YOUR SKIN IS. IT’S PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT STRENGTHEN THE STEREOTYPES ABOUT US AND IT’S IDIOTS LIKE YOU MAKE IT HARD FOR US TO COME TOGETHER AS A PEOPLE. GET AN EDUCATION.

  31. Lele 3/13/10, 05:24:PM

I wish Barbara Walters would retire. Joy Behar is the best.

  32. christina 3/14/10, 04:06:AM

I couldn’t see the video. But I read the comments and some of these people leaving comments is very hate full towards blacks. 1.) Deenscen. He said blacks always playing the card game. Things has changed a great deal. But it is very much racisim still in 2010. But we get so much love. And so many races love our style and swag. They think that’s what makes us equal. 2.) Another person name oil. he is a joke we need white people to save us. I lived in a 5 bedroom home all my life. and I had 2 rooms to myself and my own bathroom. My famly wasn’t rich. But we waz well taking care of. My family worked hard. for what they wanted. And there are a hell of alot of storys. like mines in the real world. Than they are, like that movie. But they don’t talk about that. Or make movies on positve black familys takin. Care of there own. Those movies are good and I got love for a white person helping out a black person. But that is just not the truth. That our race needs white people to save us. Evey race got kids up for adoption. And needs help. Now if u talking about another country that’s a hole nother subject.

  33. thereeducation 3/14/10, 01:12:PM

thank you, Vanessa – and Joy, too :-)

  34. Dara 3/15/10, 06:40:PM

I agree with Vanessa on every aspect of what she said. Barbara needs to shut up and retire!

  35. 1908girl 3/16/10, 06:13:PM

all I have to say is White Privilege is a helluva of a drug, that’s why your girl Barbara and the Republican chick can’t realize the existence of racism and stereotypes in film.

  36. Jose 3/18/10, 01:57:PM

hmm… black savior movie… yeah they should do that! I think M Night Shyamalan would be a great director for it. You would need someone with a great imagination to pull that off. =p

  37. tj 3/18/10, 06:22:PM

It was a ridiculous white savior movie and Vanessa as always was dead on. I LOVE her!

  38. Susie T 3/21/10, 01:43:AM

Vanessa Williams’ comment was absolutely racist but she has a right to her opinion, as last time I checked we do have freedom of speech in our country. However, if a white person had made an equally derogatory comment like that about the movie “Precious,” they’d have Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson in their face threatening a law suit and provoking the black community into a frenzy with accusations of racism and oppression. It’s situations like that, as well as many of the comments posted here which continue to promote racism. I understand blacks were mistreated for many years but here is something to think about…How many whites fought against their own race & gave their lives to help blacks gain freedom? Are those sacrifices even considered while complaining about “whitey trying to hold me back”? We have a black president now, & he wasn’t elected by the black voters alone. I was really disappointed that an intelligent woman like Ms. Williams would make such a prejudice statement.

  39. B 3/21/10, 10:13:AM

Who makes these movies? Whites! So it is a no brainer that they will put themselves in the best light. Whites will go to that movie and get a kick out of their own hubris. It is all about dollars and cents boys and girls. Dollars and cents.

  40. Libertyisdead 3/21/10, 02:51:PM

I don’t want to see the movie for all the above reasons. Baba Wawa has the typical arrogance of white privilege and has always been a talking head for it. She needs to go. Of course she and the other little blondie don’t see Vanessa or Joy’s point. They have always been privileged.
People are limited by their own experiences.
The bottom line is about money/economics, not race. Poor whites get screwed over too, but people don’t believe it cuz we’re so obsessed with race and equate it with poverty, violence, etc. for this very reason: that’s what we see in the news and movies.
I’ve seen black people get into positions of power/authority and go at it like crack addicts to give payback – same as I’ve seen women, Latinos, etc. do it too and anyone who has ever felt badly-done-to. Sad thing is the people they’re hating aren’t necessarily the ones who hated on them. And that’s what makes prejudice so evil: it doesn’t care about justice.
Whatever group is in power makes sure that everyone else sees the world in the way that they want us to.

  41. Susie T 3/23/10, 09:40:AM

    Re: LibertyisDead…Well said.

  43. SouthFlaHoney 3/28/10, 02:54:PM

    @Libertyisdead

I could not agree with you more.. I can’t stand Baba Wawa she did everything she could to derial Star Jones tv career..
