Ain’t That A B*tch: Wyclef Jean Caked His Mistress With The Yele Haiti Funds… $105K To Be Exact

Posted on March 13th, 2010 - By Bossip Staff

Categories: Caught Creepin', News, SMH, What the Hell???, What Were You Thinking?, Wyclef

Wyclef Jean probably should have cleaned his slate before he asked the world to donate money to his Yele Haiti charity. Apparently, Wyclef was paying his mistress, Zakiya Khatou-Chevassus, $105,000 as an independent contractor with the Yele charity donations back in 2008. Damn Wyclef, we tried to give you the benefit of the doubt… SMH!!!

So what did she do for that money? Zakiya Khatou-Chevassus is currently listed on Yele’s web site as the organization’s vice president. But according to five sources familiar with Yele’s operations, in 2008 she served as Jean’s personal assistant—working on his commercial endeavors as well as his charitable ones—and was involved romantically with the former Fugees star.

“She worked for Wyclef on all Wyclef matters,” says one source who has worked with Jean in the past. “She did whatever Wyclef needed that day, whether it was related to Yele or not. She would do things like book flights, and she wasn’t very good at it. It’s a shame that she made that much money.” The source said Khatou-Chevassus’ salary amounted to more than three times what Suzie Sylvain, Yele Haiti’s dedicated program director who is credited by many Yele Haiti insiders with actually keeping the organization running, was paid.

“Everyone knows they were in a relationship,” says another source familiar with Yele Haiti. “A dozen people, including me, saw and knew. It wasn’t a secret.” Jean is married, but he has said in the past that he has an open relationship with his wife.

Jean has a long history of using Yele Haiti’s money for his own commercial gain. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, the foundation paid out a total of $410,000 to commercial entities controlled in whole or in part by Wyclef, including a whopping $250,000 for advertising time on a Haitian television station he co-owns. In 2006, he demanded a $100,000 fee to perform at a Yele Haiti fundraiser designed to raise money for his own hometown.

First Wyclef gets caught with naked pics of his manager in his cell phone, now he’s cakin’ his chickens through his non-profit orginization. SMH!!!

I told yall, the smoking gun had his tax return listed for the charity at its website, thats why he was doin all that hollerin on we are the world remake, he was excited by the new money comin in, I aint givin him shit.

  • Nic

Read “Lords of Poverty” you’ll see he is not the first. Just the first black to get caught so we’ll never hear the end of it. Get ready for the Tiger Woods-like coverage.

I don’t condone his behavior – anyone who could do something like this (if true)deserves whatever they get. I’m just saying this is nothing new a lot of non-profits operate this way. That’s why wealthy people are trying to come up with new methods of gving and are turning away from traditional charities.

Your money is better spent in your own community where you can see it at work. It’s unfortunate but it is what it is.

    @B3 Fearless

You are beyond stupid. You can not use (co-mingle) donated money from your tax exempt organization to fund your for profit (taxable) company. Secondly, the purpose of the donations is for a certain percentage probably 70% maybe 80% to actually go towards the charitable mission and the rest maybe 20% for administrative cost. Wycleff has the reverse maybe 20% going towards the charitable mission and 80% for (his own personal piggy bank) administrative cost.

  • Gimmeabreak78

Clef, say it ain’t so. *hanging head in disbelief*

And to think–this man had people forgoing donations to the Red Cross in favor on giving to his organization. SMH

  • REPOSITORY

I knew it and told yo’ll dont donate to this WYTHIEF guy, he will use this money for his own benefits and not to the people.

  • Ayana

Oh well….thats $10 I lost. Really thought I was helping the needy.

  • memchee

    not surprised!!!!

I was more surprised by Al Sharpton coming to his aide before finding out the whole story!!!

that gov’t body warned against donating to his charity.

He should’ve taken that as a heads up and started working to get things in order…..certainly they’re investigating him and his charity.

  • jt

haha all the blacks they just rip you off and you blame the white man lol.

  • tell it like it is…

    Wh0re.

  • Nic

    @ B3 Fearless

You make a good point that this happened 2 years ago. This must be the incident he already apologized for. Makes you wonder why something that happened 2 years ago is just coming out today???

Don’t agree with you though on his shady business practices in the PAST. Pay the jump offs with your own cash. But it is clear that no PROOF was presented that he swindled anyone out of that Yele money.

People have to keep in mind that there is intense competetion from these “charitable” organizations to get that donation money. I’m sure the Red Cross is pissed that balcks donated so heavily to Yele because had it not been for Wyclef that money would have gone to them.

  • Mrs. Rance

Clearly he could have put more money toward the actual charity, but it’s not like the organization is a fraud overall. I’ve read of many good things they have done in Haiti when no one else was doing anything. As for his wife she has been accepting his cheating for at least 10 years that we know of. Don’t cry for her.

  • GET REAL

Anybody who gave this fool a dime in charity money was crazy. I never like his entire vibe his entire career. This story does not surprise me.

  • DarthH8ter

Wow, if only there was someone to warn us about this fraudulent sob.

  • yeahhuh

I sent money to yele..I thought I was doing a good thing. I just KNEW wyclef would do it right. I was wrong. never again.

  • http://. maggie234q

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. We met online at an age gap dating site- A_ge_m_in_gle @ c.o.m a nice and free place for Younger- Women and Older Men, or Older Women and Younger Men, to- interact with each other. Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

  • white male

Wow this is a really big story.

Right when the quake happened I said I wouldn’t donate money to a guy who raps about “having 50 Bentley’s”.

BTW a charitable organization I am involved in pays its employees like 30k a year but I wouldn’t even consider Yele a charitable org now.

  • EQ

This is some BULLSHILTZ! Why Are You Not POSTING How RED CROSS COLLECTED 255 MILLION IN HAITI RELIEF MONEY AND ONLY DONATED 80 MILLION. WHAT WYCLEF DID 2 YEARS AGO IS PENNIES A MERE DROP IN THE BUCKET COMPARED TO WHAT RED CROSS HAS DONE IN THE PAST AND CONTINUE TO DO EVERYDAY! REALIZE WHY ALL THE ATTENTION IS BEING PLACED ON WHAT WYCLEF DID 2 YEARS AGO. ITS TO PROVIDE A SMOKESCREEN FOR RED “SEND YOUR CASH NOT BLANKETS OR SUPPLIES” CROSS.

  • Taj

SMH. I have learned that even when I give people the benefit of the doubt, I doubt they will benefit from it.

I am not surprised at all. It’s a wrap for his organization.

  • whiteberry

    source??
    man… y’all can make up some $h!t

  • lol lol

Now that aint that some shit! What a disgrace he should write himself off!I always new there were underlying issues why Lauren would never team up with him again… Because he stole her money and sold his soul. Being from the hood meant nothing to him anymore.

    @Keep It Real

Just because you disagree with my comment does not mean that you have to resort to name calling.

I believe in having respectful conversations with ppl. Your response shows that you have no knowledge of finance at all so please don’t direspectfully call some one stupid when you are clearly ignorant of the subject.

Now I don’t know what you do for a living but I’m actually an accountant so I know of what I’m talking about so I will stick with my position.

Now I just finished looking at their most recent 2008 tax return. Non-profits are required to file a Form 990. And their 2008 tax return would have been prepared for the organization’s fiscal year ending in 2009. As of this period Yele had received contributions and grants in the amount of $1,896,946 so that was their total revenue, which is actually small for a non-profit. Out of that amount $1,175,325 (or 62%) was spent on grants to organization and governments which was spent to implement various services such as their food distribution program, emergency relief, Yele Student Outreach (which involves college students rallying in support of Haiti), Yele Education Alliance (A group of non-governmental organizations which pool their resources to improve education) and Gonaives Cleanup (employs local people to remove mud from streets and canals).

In addition I tallied all of the expenses that would relate to the general operations of their business (ie. depreciation, office expense, occupancy, equipment rental, etc.) and professional fees such as accounting & legal fees which altogether totaled $180,093 which brings the total % of legitimate expenditures up to 71%.

After reviewing the return the only things that stood out to me was that there were only 3 board members (1 of whom being Wyclef) and 12 volunteers for the organization. What gives me comfort about this is the fact that the majority of the funds are spent to other organizations to implement the services and the fact that none of the board members received any form of compensation whether through a W-2 or 1099-MISC. Add into the fact that Travel expenses amounted to $192,905 which shows me that he probably does travel extensively to Haiti as he claims.

The other item that stood out to me was their Schedule F where they report the amount of grants that was provided to organizations outside of the U.S. and they check off that they maintain records for the grants that they issue. I gained comfort about this claim because in their schedule O and in their Statement of Program Service Accomplishments they were able to provide detailed descirptions of the services Yele helps to implement.

I suggest you read this article in the Washington Post to be a little more informed on this subject and you can also see the organization Form 990s for 2006, 2007, & 2008.

  • Lisa (with a Big L)

This is a non-issue. This happened 2 years-ago. And yes, I agree that Wyclef’s finances concerning this nonprofit is questionable, but people, trust and believe, big white charities do a lot of backhanded dirty stuff too.

White folks have been trying to smear Wyclef’s nonprofit since the earthquake because they knew that most people who would donate would be Blacks and that we would send our donations to his charity. Read between the lines people. Why bring up a 2 year-old story for no other reason? Who’s looking into the Red Cross and these charities. Just like churches, these charities skim and do all kinds of crazy stuff.

Wyclef’s a snake and should be crying more tears. SHAMEFUL!!! black white yellow whatever, your skin color doesn’t make it any different (as someone above suggested). Thank God I didn’t donate to his charity! Save the Children got my donation.

  • beautychicknyc

@ B3 Fearless: if Wyclef paid $105,000 to his mistress for b.s. work & getting laid basically, what makes you think that all that travel to Haiti was actually for charity? That $105,000 in a country like Haiti could have done WONDERS!

  • eyesrthesoul

I figured out Wyclef had a few screws loose right around the time The Fugees broke up. I’d be more likely to trust that man who stands outside the dry-cleaners talking to himself if he said he needed some money to give to Hati, than I would Wyclef. It’s great when celebs raise awareness about disasters and the need to send money. I silently thank their crazy behinds, and head right on over to the Red-Cross.

    4. Those issues happened 2 years ago. Very few white collar crimes are discovered the year that the crime is committed.

  • http://bossip Keep it Real

    @B3 Fearless

    1. 62% spent on grants to organizations and governments. This goes to the heart of Yele’s ability to work as a major Non for profit. Wycleff is (supposedly) taking the funds and giving to other outside entities and non for profits. How is he ensuring that these funds are used properly? Yele does not have the ability to directly help the people of Haiti ie build homes, disburse food, Treat the injured ect..

  • B3 Fearless

    @beautychicknyc

I agree with you that the $105K is a significant amount of money that would have extremely helped Haiti 2 year ago when this occurred and when they were apparently together.

  • jay

Why would I give money to a guy who had his house repossessed and has a car worth more than 1.5 million? That shows you that he may be in financial trouble and has his priorities all messed up. That’s why I told my friends not to tell me to text Sh*t to yele. I sent the little money that I had directly to someone that was affected by the disaster. It’s crazy that some of you are still sticking up for him.

Look, fact of the matter is every one of us that posted a comment on this sad story has done SOMETHING we aren’t proud of in the past! In case any of you are struggling with the math, 2008 was long before the earthquake! I’m not knockin’ the hustle or condoning the alleged actions either.

WHAT I’M SAYING is that when we needed to get 200 tents to help people in Haiti, YELE picked up the $5,000 TAB!

You can’t change the past, but the future is what you make it!

  • Lizzy

Where there is smoke, there is usually fire! Although I am NOT happy to hear about this, especially since I donated to the organization, there are MANY non-profits that are run by crooked executives. If we are going to scrutinize Yele Foundation, then let’s also scrutinize the Susan G. Komen Foundation, UNICEF, United Way, etc.

  • kissofdanger

I have been hopping around a million sites and still aint seen no damn proof! Please stop the rumor mill.
