Wake Up Haitian President Rene Preval!!! Please Keep Earthquake Survivors Safe From Rapist Attacks!!!

After all they’ve already been through, women and children in Haiti are in serious danger of being raped — even gang raped — because there is little to no protection in the dangerous tent camps. Details on the flipside.

Women and children as young as 2, already traumatized by the loss of homes and loved ones in the Jan. 12 catastrophe, are now falling victim to rapists in the sprawling tent cities that have become home to hundreds of thousands of people. With no lighting and no security, they are menacing places after sunset. Sexual assaults are daily occurrences in the biggest camps, aid workers say — and most attacks go unreported because of the shame, social stigma and fear of reprisals from attackers.

Rape was a big problem in Haiti even before the earthquake and frequently was used as a political weapon in times of upheaval. Both times the first democratically elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, was ousted, his enemies assassinated his male supporters and raped their wives and daughters.

But the quake that killed an estimated 200,000 people has made women and girls ever more vulnerable. They have lost their homes and are forced to sleep in flimsy tents or tarp-covered lean-tos. They’ve lost male protection with the deaths of husbands, brothers and sons. And they are living in close quarters with strangers.

In one camp, some 47,000 people live crowded into what used to be a sports ground in a neighborhood that always has been dangerous. Residents include a dozen escaped prisoners, among them a man accused of a notorious murder, according to Fritznel Pierre, a human rights advocate who lives at the camp.

“But nobody says anything because they’re scared, scared of the criminals and scared of the police,” he said. Pierre complained that the U.N. patrols are ineffective. “They only drive their cars down the one road that covers only a small portion of the camp. They never get out of their cars,” he said.

“For me it seems completely bizarre that for this one camp that everyone knows is unsafe, it’s taken them three weeks to get a patrol going,” said Liesl Gerntholtz, executive director of the agency’s women’s rights division. “It’s unrealistic to expect patrols in camps all the time, but I think they can identify hotspots and provide security to those spots.”

In the hilltop suburb of Petionville, where plush mansions look out over slums on hillsides and in ravines, a 7-year-old rape victim was being treated Monday in the hospital of a tent camp set up on a golf course. Another child, a 2-year-old, had been raped in the same camp two weeks earlier.

The toddler is taking antibiotics for a gonorrhea infection of the mouth, according to Alison Thompson, who is the volunteer medical coordinator for a Haitian relief group created by Sean Penn. She helped treat both children.

“Women aren’t being protected,” Thompson said. “So when the lights go down is when the rapes increase, and it’s happening daily in all the camps in Port-au-Prince.”

Besides sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, victims face possible HIV infection. Haiti has the highest infection rate for the virus that causes AIDS in the Western hemisphere, with one in 50 people infected.

Few rapes are reported because women often face humiliating scrutiny from police officers who suggest they invited the attacks and even nurses who contend young girls were “too hot” in their dress style, according to Delva Marie Eramithe, a leader of KOFAVIV, a group of Haitian women who survived political rapes in 2004.

Eramithe said, “One policeman said they had received reports of nothing but raping, thefts and domestic beatings all day and there’s nothing they can do. The other police officer said the only person who can do anything is President (Rene) Preval.”

“We are aware of problem … but it’s not a priority,” Information Minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said last month.

What kind of fu*kery is this??? Seriously!!! If you aren’t irate about this issue there is seriously something wrong. Children as young as two being raped??? Infected with sexually transmitted diseases before they are even out of diapers??? Teenage virgins gang raped by three men at a time??? What has happened to humanity? And how dare the Information Minister say this isn’t a priority! This is a damned shame.

  • Gimmeabreak78

The problem of re-establishing security more than two months after the quake is definitely a big one, but it’s definitely exacerbated by the fact that protective shelter (with locks and keys) is so hard to come by. God bless Haiti.

Sometimes men act more like animals than human beings. How sad for these women and children. God bless and protect them.

For those who are looking for credible charities to donate to, there is a site called Charity Navigator that evaluates the financial documents of non-profits, including those providing relief to Haiti. There are also organizations that are accepting non-monetary donations (for example, in D.C., the Haitian E-m-b-a-s-s-y has been putting together boxes of toiletries and other necessities to send to the country).

YES I FEEL THE SAME WAY. IDK IF MY MONEY IS REALLY GONNA BE SENT OVER THERE. UNLESS I CAN DELIVER IT MYSELF( WHICH I WOULDNT GO OVER THERE TO BECOME A VICTIM) IM NOT SENDING ANYTHING. IF I DO SEND SOMETHING IT WILL BE TOILETRIES BUT THATS IT.

    @ GLOK
MY MORNING IS GOING GOOD. STILL A LIL UPSET ABOUT LOSING A HOUR OF SLEEP BUT IM GOOD. HOWS YOUR MORNING GOING? YEAH THEY SCHAMED ALOT OF PEOPLE OUT OF THERE MONEY. I WORK TO HARD TO JUST GIVE MY MONEY AWAY. NOT ONLY THAT AMERICA HAS ITS OWN PROBLEMS TO DEAL WITH. HOW ARE WE SUPPOSE TO HELP OTHER COUNTRIES WHEN WE CANT EVEN FIX OUR OWN. PEOPLE ARE STILL SUFFERING FROM KATRIANE NOW YALL WANT US TO SEND BILLIONS TO HATI. GTFOH. I FEEL FOR THE WOMAN AND CHILDREN BUT WE NEED TO HELP OURSELVES FIRST AND SAME GOES FOR THEM. THEY BETTER LEARN TO STICK TOGETHER.

  • samech

I’ve always been an advicate for more women carying firearms, they should protect themselves, hook or crook…. in that type of society is must be real easy to get guns (as oppose to here in the US- to many background checks) get a machete or something..damn.

  • Glok.. Da Messiah!

    CHOCALATE!

TIME IZ FLYING FASTER THAN EVER NOW ,..LOSING SLEEP IZ THE PITTS..IM PIZZED OFF ABOUT THIS …WE DO HAVE OUR OWN PROBLEM BUT WE STILL MANAGE TO TAKE CARE OF OTHERS AND NOT OUR SELVES…IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS WE SUBJECT OUR LIVES TO BULLCHIT,…AND NOT THINK ABOUT “OUR PPL” ….THOSE HAITIANS ARE OUR PPL SIS AND WE ACT LIKEDWE WERE DOING SO MUCH BETTER AND LIVIVNG WITH THIS FALSE IMAGINARY HOPE THAT WE ARE EQUAL TO THE SAME PPL THAT OPPRESS US…BUT WAIT ..IT DID HAPPENED HERE ,..KATRINA ..AND THIS SAME COUNRTY …CALLED THEM REFUGEES…AND SHOWED THEM LOOTING AND SAYING THEY WERE RAPING AND KILLING …THE SAME ONES THAT WE TRY TO IMITATE…AND LIVE LIKE … THE THOUGHT OF THE PPL WHO CHILDREN FROM NEW ORLEANS FIGHT IN THEY WARS AND HELP PROTECT THIS COUNTRY WAS TREATED LIKE SECOND HAND CITIZENS!

  • chocalatetunda01

    @ GLOK
I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING THAT YOU ARE SAYING MY BROTHA I REALLY DO. BUT HOW ARE WE SUPPOSE TO HELP OTHERS IF WE CANT HELP OURSELVES. YES THEY ARE OUR PEOPLE BUT WE IN THE SAME BOAT AS THEY ARE. NOBODY CARES ABOUT US. MAJORITY OF US DONT CARE ABOUT US. INSTEAD OF STICKING TOGETHER WE GO AGAINST EACH OTHER. THATS WHAT I DONT UDERSTAND. YES IT WAS TOTALLY WRONG FOR THEM TO CALL KATRINA VICTIMS REFUGEES HOW COULD THEY. SOME PEOPLE MIGHT GET MAD AT ME FOR SAYING THIS BUT THE U.S. IS TREATING HATI VICTIMS BETTER THEN THEY TREATED KATRINA VICTIMS. YOU DONT SEE THEM CALLING THEM REFUGEES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. AS SOON AS IT HAPPENED THEY WERE OVER THER. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR THEM TO GET TO THE PEOPLE WHERE KATRINA HIT? PEOPLE ARE STILL WITHOUT DOWN THERE. THATS WHAT I MEAN BY HELP OUT THE PEOPLE OVER HERE FIRST B4 WE GO GIVING OUR MONEY AWAY TO OTHERS AND STILL SEEING NO RESULTS. I BELIEVE IN HELPING THE NEXT MEN BY ALL MEANS, BUT THEY HAVE TO HELP THEMSELVES FIRST.

  • Cory Roberson

It happens all over the third-world. The problem is rapant in several countries, but its nice that you shed light on this issue in Haiti. They need policing badly. Aid and money can’t do anything more.

    Thanks huh

    Glok

Good Morning it is all good but it is very sad when you can no longer believe in your country words and ability to tell the truth… The sad part is that no one or any of the news have covered where the money is going and what about the other countries who gave money we should see some kind of progress but look how they did the Katrina victims and they are on US soil…

  • bluekid

@ GLOK, I understand how you feel, but you have to remember that the jails and prisons where also hit and those criminal are out and about now, and the good black men or few most got killed in the earth quake or by the criminals when they where trying to protect their families.
It’s now up to the government to try and separate the children and woman and families in order to protect them from the hounds, when I said families that in clued the black family man, because he needs protection to. The hounds are the criminals that once where in jails for doing this act in the first place, they once where jailed are in prison now their are running about causing mayhem. Their are still good black men in Haiti they also need protection from the hounds.

  • bluekid

    @ resurrected
So true, but some time we make our selves victims in the United States by being so depended on the system, a lot of the Katrina victim where already had been victimized by the system. Even in California, it is also a big welfare state, if a disaster was to hit there it would be know different then Katrina. The poor in any case will suffer a lot more.

  • bluekid

Their are rich Haitian here in North America, I hope they are planing something to help those back home. It’s sad when so many here that have money and not doing what they should.
I haven’t heard of any of them saying anything, if you guys know of any one setting up a foundation for schools and hospitals that are to be built in Haiti I would love to know.

Please stop thinking I’m talking about blacks, I lived in California and still go back about once a month due to business. I know who and what race live their and I know their are mansions in Compton and gated neighborhoods. I will break it down for ya, In Cali you have a huge amount of people depended on the system be it be white, mexican or black and all that is in-between they are still depended on the system and in case of a deserter out of that group who do you think is the one that will be left to rout? And who do you think will get the help they need? The blacks that have money because they where never depended on the government anyway will survive and move on, but those minorities that where depended on the system will have problems and will be abused by they government and left to rout. I’m trying not to seem insensitive but that’s how it is, the prisons and jails will cause mayhem on the people that are left, if the army do not come in and control the situation. We forget about the jailers and the prisoners that are locked up that may be freed by some strange incident that may cause a great crime wave.

  • bluekid

    @ Glok.. Da Messiah!
I understand, and you are right, I remember they where trying to make out that the people where rioting for food, but they never could prove it.
They also said there was know food in Haiti right after the earth quake, but I saw people with bottled water walking down the streets talking on their cell phones.
I hate the media, because of their lies. The possibilities of you being right on this is great. Strong black men will protect their families and their brothers too and the same with the younger men. This country has gotten rich off of disasters. If is said deserters earlier I meant to say disasters.
Glok, I have much love for ya, you are a strong black brother.

I find it funny that people seem to forget history of the world including america.

When have women and children ever been safe from exploitation of all kinds.

This happen in america and we have so called police.

There is just tv news and internet and other ways of reporting this crime. THIS ISN’T NEW
WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN VICTIMS TO BE EXPLOITED. HUMANITY HASN’T CHANGED…
it just easier to report in 2010.

if you want it to change be part of the solution and not the problem.

all that military presence that showed up there after the quake…where are they now? everyone knows the u.n. just do what the u.s. tells them to do. it’s hard to believe that with the BILLIONS of $’s that have been sent over there there’s not enough resources to place women and children in a safer environment. heartbreaking.

  • Was the water gender bias??? or the govt??

I am starting to believe that the govt was actually behind this…I mean come on, why is there so many men, boys and stuff killed in Haiti? Were the women and men living separate on the island…it just seems really funny to me…alot more going on than the eye can see.

See, people, I’m not calling for a Jean-Claude “baby Doc” Duvalier come back, but if he still reigns these rapists would be killed; let just say they wouldn’t attempt such acts. Also, a great portion of these criminals/gangsters served prison times in the U.S. and were sent to their native land i.e. Haiti, when they came out of jail. Most of them were raised in the U.S. And can’t even speak creole/french, so they started commtting violent crimes in Haiti.
