We recently learned of a certain casting situation going on over in Hollyweird with Marvel’s new Captain America film. The new director has a 300K budget for their leading man and it’s looking like so far they are only considering white actors for the part. After seeing newcomer Gabourey Sidibe’s career take off, we’re definitely pulling for some creative casting on this film. Pop the hood for details.
TheWrap.com writer Jeff Sneider explored the situation recently on his blog:
It’s been a month since “Captain America” director Joe Johnston promised casting news within “a couple of weeks,” and besides a disappointing (and ever-growing) list of actors I’d never dream of installing as the title character, we’re no closer to anything firm.
What’s more, the choices thus far send all kinds of mixed signals as to where they’re going with the character — except for the fact that they’re definitely keeping Steve Rogers white. To wit:
The newest names floating out there are all over the place: “Stop-Loss” co-stars Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe. Preceding them were John Krasinski (pictured right), Garret Hedlund, Chris Evans, Chace Crawford, Scott Porter, Dane Cook (huh?), Michael Cassidy (“Smallville”) and Wilson Bethel (“Generation Kill”).
Rogers was always a noble character, a straight-laced, selfless idealist who always went by the book and did the right thing while standing for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. (And unlike Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark or even Tobey McGuire’s Peter Parker, he actually can resist a good wisecrack.)
…How is there not one non-white actor on this list? To have 10 actors reportedly in the running, with not a single one of them African American, Latino or otherwise, isn’t exactly representative of the American population these days. Why pass on a great opportunity for Marvel to think outside the box. After all, isn’t America a melting pot?
Personally, I think Anthony Mackie (in photo illustration, left), Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez or Elijah Kelley (George Lucas’ upcoming “Red Tails”) would all make a better Captain America than John Krasinski.
We think Anthony Mackie would make a great Captain America too! We loved him in The Hurt Locker, Laz Alonso also did a great job in Avatar and Tyrese is always a great leading man, just ask BeyBey and Gaga. Captain America was an intentionally patriotic creation who was often depicted fighting the Axis powers of World War II. I don’t think a black actor would really fit in for the role. You can’t just cast a black actor in any kind of role…especially in a 1950s setting like from Cap. America…they would have to do a lot more explainin’

As far as white actors I would love to see Channing Tatum. I doubt Ryan Phillipe would do it because he seems to prefer darker roles.
As far as African American actors playing Captain American that would be cool to see Columbus Short. And I would be all for Jay Hernandez to rep the Latinos.
At $300K there are plenty of actors they could give that opportunity to because that price is too low for the big names.

Well actually, about 10 or so years ago, M.a.r.v.e.l. released a 5 part comic series chronicling the origins of The Super Soldier Experiment/Serum which led to the creation of Captain America during WW2…Now the first soldiers the Scientist tested the serum on was a group of black soldiers/volunteers as a way of working out the bugs before administering a proven product on a white soldier – Steve Rodgers. This was M.a.r.v.e.l.’s way of acknowledging America’s racist past by way of drawing a not so subtle parallel with the Tuskeegee experiments during the same time period…All but one of the black soldiers died during the tria and error period, so technically the original Captain America was black, and a few years ago he made an appearance in the current C. C. comic. I’m not familiar with that particular storyline, but i’m sure Wickapedia probably has a chapter to explain it in detail, if anyone is interested in pursuin’ it.

Just know that most black people think Channing Tatum is black anyway, so when he gets the job he will be representing both blacks/whites (all races).

This might be his break through performance for some people to see. I already think he can act.
