Racism In Hollyweird? NYLON Should Know… Zoe Saldana Is The First Brown Cover Girl In Seven Years

NYLON Magazine thinks they’re slick… They put Hollyweird’s current fave Zoe Saldana on the front of their upcoming issue and have the nerve to act like they’re not guilty of the same shizz she’s talking about in the interview. Pop the hood to see what we mean.

Zoe speaks on being rejected in Hollyweird:

“When they say ‘We want to go white,’ they have a very smooth way of saying it, and the recent one is the word traditional. [I've heard] ‘Oh, you know, you’re just not what we were looking for, your skin is a little darker.’ Compared to what?! My skin is just my skin. It’s dark if you compare it to someone who’s lighter.”

We hear ya Zoe… Even though you said pretty much the same thing in your last interview.

Meanwhile NYLON hasn’t had a brown face on a cover since Lil’ Kim was hot (sorta hot anyway…it was 2003). We also found it ironic that the caption they put to put under their token Dominicana reads: “Stunningly Smart” which kinda strikes you the same way as all those well meaning folks who say things like “Obama speaks so well.”

    I’ve never even heard of Nylon Magazine. I’m not sure why they wuold name themselves after a synthetic fabric anyway.

    “Mainstream” glamour/fashion rags are famous for this kind of covert racism. Then when they finally put a black woman on the cover, they yell it from the highest rooftops as if they deserve a cookie or something. SMH.

  • Who Cares?!

    Who cares! I mean, I love Zoe She’s gorgeous and mad talented. Can Hollyweird for once get a beautiful African American woman to actually play, a beautiful African American woman, PLEASE?!?!

  • Powderpuff

    shes so pretty and smart :>

  • Sticky-n-Sweet

    Gimmeabreak78- They do act like they deserve a cookie. Like when White people act like voting for Obama makes everything “even steven”. Ummm, you voted for the guy with the sane plan to save the country, instead of Ms. Moose for Brains and the Creepy Old Guy with no plan at all. Nobody is turning cartwheels for you because you made the smart choice, especially if you previously screwed everyone over by making the worst choice possible- Bush. If you voted for him twice, the only way you can re-pay the nation is harakiri (honor suicide, Japanese samurai style).

    I’ll try to look at this in another way: Nylon is a pop culture magazine that puts out 10 issues a year. The last time I checked black people made up about 12%-13% of the U.S. population. If their goal was be representative of the individuals who follow pop culture, it would stand to reason that of the 70 or so issues they have put out in the last year, 8 or 9 (or 12%) covers would have featured black people. Since only one cover in 70 features a black person (1.4%), I think they deserve a giant “Ho sit down” for self-righteously pontificating on the color line in Hollywood.

    For all the ignorant folks on here who say Zoe Saldana is not African American. She is black. Dominican’s are mixed with black,so that makes her black. Whether she claims it or not, that is her business, but she is. A lot of Latinos are mixed with black, some more than others. They can deny the fact that they are mixed with black all they want to but if you know your history, you will know that the body of the first man was found in Africa so that means that every race has black in them. • AnonymousGal

    No matter how many times you try to educate some people, they still don’t get it. I think their mothers either did drugs when they were pregnant or they just have a deficiency. For you Negros who don’t get it, for the ten millionth time, THERE ARE BLACK LATINOS, AKA AFRO-LATINOS. WTF are you talking about, “your average Negro?” There is no “average” Negro. We vary in color and nationalities. Pick up a book and educate yourselves will ya!

  • gb

    black and African-American are not necessarily the same. An African-American person is ALWAYS black, while a black person MAY NOT BE African-American. However, this does not make the NON AFRICAN AMERICAN black person ANY LESS BLACK. African-Americans don’t have the sole right to call themselves black and it would be laughable if it wasn’t so sad that African-Americans act as “gatekeepers” of what being black is. Again, since you’re NO MORE BLACK than non African-American blacks, what gives you any type of authority on what’s black and what isn’t. In summary, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO BE BLACK.

    i read nylon, it’s a cool magazine if you’re into altenative or “hipster” things, which tend to be their target audience ;)

    i think it’s funny that some people refer to zoe as a “sellout” just because she doesn’t fall in their narrow, ignorant view of what it means to be black.

  • AsiaA

    First off, Nylon is not a pop culture mag. It’s a bit more on the sub culture side. That’s why many of you have not heard it.

    Someone mentioned Fefe Dobson, Santigold, and Solange. Yes. Those are the black girls I wouldn’t be surprised to see on the cover. Kerry Washington, even Zoe. They make sense to be on the cover. Most of the events they go to are more or less with that crowd.

    If they stuck Taraji P. Henson on the cover, it would be like, “Umm….okay…”. Not because she’s black, but because it would be random as hell.

    we call her sellout because she’s f’ck with white men like wh0re…..u dig?!

  • I HATE WHEN BLACK CELEBS COMPLAIN ABOUT RACISM, THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND DATE A WHITE PERSON

    I’m sick of this woman, she can go to hell. Her opinions lack credibility when you consider her actions.This bytch is complaining about racism, and being targeted by white entrepreneurs and agents that discriminate against her for being black, then she turns around and sleeps with the very thing that is harboring so more animosity against her.

    This bytch reminds me of super model iman, she use to complain about racism also. Then she turned around and had a child by a white man.

    Sanaa lathan does the same exact shyt.

    We can’t forget henry louis gates either. Even though he isn’t much of a “celeb”

    I’m sick and tired of these sellouts bytching and complaining about white people. If you lay down in the bed with them, then be prepared to deal with the racism that their race is historically down for. stop complaining about it because it makes you look like a idiot.

    IF these black hollywierd actors/models were so against racism they would be building strong black family units instead of selling out.

  • http://deleted CriticXtreme

    If you’re half and half of something and semi-good looking, you’ll get on the cover! That’s the real but you know everyone will deny the truth.

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @I hate when black celebs…

    Forgive me, but you logic doesn’t seem to make sense. I say this respectfully–how does a black person complaining about racism make hera sellout if she dates/marries a white person? Do you think their union means that the black person believes that racism no longer exists or do you think that even if the black person still thinks it exists, she forfeits her right to say anything about it?

    To me, (again I say this respectfully) your logic is akin to saying that if you complain about black-on-black crime for example, you lose your right to speak credibly on the topic if you marry a black man because black men are the biggest perpetrators of black on black violence. Of course if you marry a black criminal, your credibility on the subject, but if you marry a black law-abiding citizen, you don’t.

    By the same token, if you date/marry a white racist you do lose credibility on racism, but if you date/marry a white person who isn’t racist, I don’t think you should.

  • http://www.bossip.com the realest

    LMAO black people complain when they dont get magazine covers…then they complain once they do.they complain about not being considered by white people…then complain when they actually are.they complain about being separated according to skin shade…then turn around and call lightskinned people “not real blacks” what the H.E.L.L do you people want????????????????

  • Gimmeabreak78

    “Of course if you marry a black criminal, YOU KEEP your credibility on the subject, but if you marry a black law-abiding citizen, you don’t.”

Maybe you wanna check out or- tell your friends.

  • I HATE WHEN BLACK CELEBS COMPLAIN ABOUT RACISM, THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND DATE A WHITE PERSON

    @Gimmeabreak78

    IF black people complain about experiencing racism from white people then they should not be engaging in relationships with white people. It is very simple to comprehend.

    Racism is extremely prevalent in interracial couples as well. What makes you think your non black partner wouldn’t call you a “n_gger” or a “monkey”? I have seen it happen, I have acquaintances involved in interracial relationships tell me stories about how their partner used racial slurs against them in a argument.

    That is like me eating shrimps even though I realize It would make me catch a allergic reaction. Then I complain about my throat swelling up. It makes absolutely no sense.

    This bytch reminds me of Henry Louis Gates. He is in his house with a white woman, but then when cops apprehend him he wants to complain about white people.

    And your analogy of black on black crimes makes no sense ( with all do respect ). There is white on white crime as well but we aren’t talking about that. We are talking about relationships of various races in this multiculturalism society we live in.

  • real black is chocolate

    Gimmeabreak78

    you is wack ma lol

  • Zoe de la Negra

    I think it is great that Nylon put Tracy Morgan in drag on their cover!

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @I hate when black celebs…

    My question to you is this–do you think ALL white people are racist?

    I used the example of black on black crime because, just like I don’t think all black men are criminals, yet black on black crime is still a problem–all white people aren’t racists, though racism is still a problem.

    I think we do ourselves a disservice when we all people of a particular race or nationality into a specific box.

    For example, how does the fact that Henry Louis Gates being married to a white woman make his arrest any less racially-motivated?

  • Amil

    Good for her.

  • princedonte

    yall dumb nylon is not the only one so be glad they finally got a black on there

  • I HATE WHEN BLACK CELEBS COMPLAIN ABOUT RACISM, THEN THEY TURN AROUND AND DATE A WHITE PERSON

    @Gimmeabreak78

    Your missing the point. Of course Dr. Henry louis gates apprehension by the police could of been racially motivated. With the rise of police brutality the argument is very plausible. I never eliminated that fact, however I did eliminate his right to complain.

    A black person should not spew anti white rhetoric when they are wrapped up in the bedsheets with a white individual. Blacks who are involved in interracial relationships do not have the right to complain about the negative treatment they receive from white people, if you lay down in bed with a white person then you should be prepared to take the racial divisive hate mongering bigoted mentality that MOST of them throw at you.

    I didn’t wake up yesterday, I live in a community full of white people. I’m well aware of what I am talking about. Most of them carry a superiority complex, even the so called “white friends” feel that they are above you. They feel the need to dominate you, and cut you off in a discussion when your views differ from theirs.

    Bottom line is black people who get involved in interracial relationships have no right to complain about white racial attacks from white people. It is evident that if they found whites so racist they would stay away from them, not engage in s_x with them.

    I on the other hand and say whatever I want about white people. I’m not a walking contradiction, I don’t sleep with them one moment then cry about experiencing racism from them the next moment. I tend to avoid them as a whole, even though it is such a tedious task since I live in a community surrounded by them. or at least until I move

    My views on the subject matter won’t change.
    Blacks who are involved in IR with white people need stfu and stop complaining about their racism.

  • chuuuch

    It’s proven statistically black people on covers of magazines don’t sell as well as white people on the cover.

    A magazine is a business whose only reason for existence is to make money. Not change the world. Not to be ‘fair’. Not to be politically correct or have everyone win a trophy. To make money.

    Ergo, magazines put white people on the cover.

    A=B=C. It’s not rocket science.

  • Why we gotta keep sayin’ it? Black is a color not a nationality…

    Does anyone remember this scientist about 3 years ago? Are we proving him right or wrong? Why are we so petty sometimes? What degree of blackness does it take to be “black”?
    ——————————————–

    One of the world’s most respected genetic scientists is embroiled in an extraordinary row after claiming that black people are less intelligent than white people.

    James Watson, a Nobel Prize winner for his part in discovering the structure of DNA, provoked outrage with his comments.

    The 79-year-old geneticist said he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really.”. He said he hoped that everyone was equal, but countered that “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”.
    ——————————————
    Tell us how you really feel, James!

  • Gimmeabreak78

    @I hate when

    I think I understand your point clearly.

    You are saying that people who date/member a member of a group of people don’t have the right to complain about mistreatment from other members of that group of people. I hear you loud and clear on that.

    My point is simply that you can extrapolate that to apply to any single member of a larger group, and any problem that group inflicts upon another. In the end, you have to evaluate each person on a case-by-case basis before you draw a conclusion about that person’s general intent (whether it’s racism, black-on-black crime, domestic violence, etc). I mean isn’t it fair to allow an individual’s behavior determine how you view his character rather than his race, gender, etc?

  • Why we gotta keep sayin’ it? Black is a color not a nationality…

    “…I’m not a walking contradiction, …
    …I tend to avoid them as a whole, even though it is such a tedious task since I live in a community surrounded by them.”

I catch it occasionally when I’m in the city @ trendy lil spots. so it’s no surprise that Zoe’s (who’s awesome) is the first piece of cover color in so long. when we have a good magazine that is geared towards us it goes under… we only have ourselves to blame.

    I love Nylon, Great to see someone in the cover that looks more like me! btw Nylon is a little bit eccentric with their fashion tastes, their mags are definitely not mainstream, and a lot of black actresses dont have the shall i say “avant guarde” almost anorexic look that is laced in every Nylon. Not giving an excuse, but they do have to cater to their readers, I do not know a lot of african americans who read Nylon unless they are fashion obsessed, and when I say fashion I mean like different/eccentric/crazy/wierd type issh. So I understand why they wont just plaster a black person in their cover, i doubt it has anything to do with racism. Anyways I would love to see Zoe kravitz on their cover Next!

    I’ve seen Zoe in person, she’s not light skin like in the Nylon magazine cover. She’s so thin, and not that tall! I’m losing weight and I hope to be as small as her! Gorgeous!

    Anyways, sometimes I wish I was mixed. I’m just plain Nigerian American 18 year old gal, with dark brown skin, and a few pounds over weight. Seems like all the black girls who are popular are mixed or light skin. If I only I could be in their skin :) Oh God, bless me in my next life with mix heritage :)

    Maybe Zoe is the first black girl in 7 years COOL ENOUGH to be on the cover of Nylon. Ever thought of that? Nylon is a white hipster/indie rock fashion mag, how many black chicks rock like that? They’re all wannabe divas, hoodrats and project queens. Santigold is the only cool black chick I can think of who’s out right now.

    I think it’s funny that black women never come out of their ghetto comfort zone yet complain when the mainstream doesn’t embrace them.
