They say ain’t no fury like a woman scorned, but who needs fury when you can take it to the jury instead? A North Carolina woman sued her husband’s mistress for $9 million dollars worth of “severe emotional distress” and she won. Details on the flippy.

Cynthia Shackelford, 60, used a little-known law in her native state of North Carolina to bring a suit against Anne Lundquist, the lover whom she claims wrecked her 33-year marriage to husband Allan.

Lundquist was charged with “alienation of affections” – or interfering in a marriage – in one of the few American states that allow someone to sue over such a clause.

She was ordered to pay the $9 million in damages to Shackelford by a court in Greensboro, N.C., last week.

“I had not a clue that Allan would wander,” Shackelford told local newspaper the Greensboro News & Record. “He kept telling me ‘Oh, she’s just a friend. There’s no affair. I love you.’”

The spurned spouse, who gave up her teaching career to look after her former husband and their two children, said she hoped the ruling would deter other would-be mistresses of married men.

“We would like for people to respect the sanctity of marriage,” Shackelford said.

“We wanted a number high enough that it would keep other people from … going after other married spouses.”

This is the same law that folks were saying Fantasia better watch her back about… Too bad Sandra Bullock and Elin Woods aren’t North Carolina residents, even if it didn’t prevent them from opening their legs it might have kept those skanks from running their mouths.

Do you think this law should be enacted in more states? But do you think it would it prevent adultery or just create more lawsuits?
