Cullen Jones and the US Olympic Swim Team won the Gold yesterday in the 4×100 Freestyle relay:
Swimmer Cullen Jones is still reeling from winning Olympic gold in a relay that is already being called one of the most exciting races in sports history. And now he is just starting to digest the longer-reaching impact his victory could have on a sport that is lacking in diversity.
“I was told, ‘You could change the face of swimming by getting more African-Americans into swimming,’ ” Jones, 24, said. “At first I was like, ‘Really, me?’ I never got into it thinking I could do something like that, you never do. I just liked to swim.”
But years of training have led Jones to the top of the Olympic podium — and he is ready to use his new position in the public spotlight to spread his love for swimming to minority youths when he returns home to the States. Jones is just the third African-American swimmer to medal in an Olympic Games, and today, as the third leg of the relay that anchor Jason Lezak brought home in a dramatic finish, he became just the second to win gold.

Firstly, the 100m is NOT his race (he is a 50m swimmer).
Secondly, he is one of the fastest in this race, NO ONE ELSE COULD HAVE SWAM HIS LEG BETTER.
Thirdly, he swam an AMAZING split. He did not “almost lose the race for them.” He did EXACTLY what they needed him to do. Everyone swam World Record times.

Many modern sports like basketball and football are based on ancient games played by people such as the Aztecs and Mayans. All cultures have sports…stop giving the white man credit inventing when they just copied or modified a sport.

Some interesting info on Cullen from the New York Times:
Jones is the third black swimmer to make a United States Olympic squad, after Anthony Ervin in 2000 and Maritza Correia in 2004. Since he burst onto the international scene with a 10th-place world ranking in the 50 freestyle in 2005, Jones has promoted water safety.
He would rather teach minorities to swim than preach about what it takes to make an Olympic team. “I’m not trying to get the next Michael Phelps,” Jones said. “I’m not trying to get someone to fill my shoes.”
Noting that minorities are three times more susceptible to drowning, he added: “At the age of 5 I was almost a statistic by drowning myself. So I think it’s very important just to get the word out.”
The incident Jones was referring to occurred at a Pennsylvania water park during a family vacation. Jones became separated from his inner tube at the end of a ride down a slide and passed out. He said he had to be given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the scene.
Within days of that incident, his mother, Debra, enrolled him in swimming lessons in Newark, near their home in Irvington, N.J.

Puerto Rico, nicknamed the “Island of Enchantment” was, for Blacks and Indians an “Island of Disenchantment” or an everyday living hell during the colonial period. As in other western region nations, the Amerinidians mostly were either worked to death or died from diseases caught from the conquistadors. Puerto Rico, which translates into “rich port”, became the new home for many Africans as they were forcefully brought over to take the place of the declining Tainos to produce coffee, tobacco and most importantly sugar. From the day they set step through the port around the year 1560, Afro-Puerto Ricans were seen as inhuman, strange, exotic and suspicious. Slavery was an expensive business to be engaged in so White slavemasters began branding the foreheads of slaves to distinguish legal slaves from the illegal ones and keep them from being kidnapped by rivals. Just like the U.S.A. during slavery time, Puerto Rico had what is known as “house negros” and “field negros”. Like I stated earlier, Blacks were primarily used to grow sugar cane; they usually were the field negros and were much more rebellious. House Negros, namely Black women, were used as servants in the house and not only served food and clean houses; they were used to provide sexual pleasure to the masters and their sons. Black people all over the world have historically been viewed as “sexual beings” even to this day. For the conquistadors in Page Ranking, they felt the only purpose for Black people on Earth was to serve them with sex not to mention give birth to more slaves, perform culinary arts, and make the masters rich by harvesting the aforementioned crops. If it wasn`t for Ramon Betances and the rest of the Puerto Rican Abolistionist movement, slavery came to an end after over 350 years. It was definitely a business decision on behalf of the Spanish National Assembly as they were compensated with 35 million pesetas per slave and Blacks had to work three (3) more years before totally losing the shackles. The abolition of slavery on the island did have another cost. Just as in Mexico, Puerto Rico according to many scholars suffers from “African Amnesia”. Take into fact that in 1820, Blacks made up 56% of the nation and then in 1950 it was down to 23%. In the 2002 census, 8% out of 3 million plus people identified as Black while 80% said they were White. It is without a doubt that Puerto Rico is “the lightest country in the West Indies” but one can`t only determine race by only skin color as is done on the island. Truthfully speaking, Puerto Ricans are more Mulatto than Mestizo plus there also is a small surviving Amerindian Taino population even today. Blackness is acknowledged, though, but rarely in a positive light. The ones who do acknowledged it are mostly Black or dark-Mulatto and have been seen as less “Puerto Rican” due to the racial policies still practiced in Page Ranking and the relationship with the U.S.A. has played a huge part in the denial of Blackness. Even though native Boriquas like Ricky Martin and Mark Anthony have embraced the African element in Salsa music, Black history in Puerto Rico exists but it does not exist. However, thanks to some, Puerto Rico is starting to regain its memory letting the world know that there was an African past therefore influencing the present. Maybe one day, Puerto Rico can truly be the “Island of Enchantment”.

I used to see these little black kids on the public rinks in Manhattan: brilliant! I was thinking, Oh, man, if someone would just start a junior hockey league for these kids! Basketball’s fine, but we’re just about overloaded with it in black neighborhoods. Give the kids a chance to play something else. There are so many great, great sports they’d love — tennis, hockey, golf, vollebyall, swimming, fencing (in the last summer Olympiad, the U.S. put up two blacks, a sibling pair, as their top hopefuls), archery, even equestrian events.It’s not like a hockey stick or ice skates or a compound bow deracinate you on contact.
There’s a whole big world out there; do we only feel comfortable in the ghetto?

That race was hot! So happy the US beat the trash talking French team, I love it! Yes, Cullen did have the slowest leg of the race, but he was not “slow.” And he did earn his spot, him and three others earlier in the day competed the relay in the prelims and they all did great, but they had one spot available and the one who did their thing the best, would get to swim the finals. So had it not been him, it could’ve been someone who was slower, who knows? I’m just happy for him, a brother doing his thing in the swimming world, and that USA won that gold!

In Black Enterprise Magazine, they had statistics for swimming.It was most at Risk Swimmers…Here it is: Whites were 31% at risk.
Hispanic and/or Latinos were 56% at risk.
African Americans were 58% at risk.

I hope none of them go on a cruise trip, or anything near water. One of their children falls in and they go in after them both of them are gone. I don’t give a shyt if they’d be embarrassed in a swim class being grown and not knowing how to swim. It could save you and someone you love one day.

Maritza’s parents, Vincent and Anne, from Guyana, moved to San Juan, where Maritza was born and raised. In 1987, when Maritza was seven years old, she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis. Her doctor recommended that Maritza take swimming classes and use swimming as a treatment for her condition. In 1990, her family moved and settled in Tampa, Florida.
Correia attended Tampa Bay Technical High School and joined the school’s swimming team. In 1999, she became the U.S. National Champion in the 50m freestyle in the 18 and under category. She was also a six time Florida High School State Champion in the 5 different events. Correia was a member of the 1997 USA National Junior Team that competed in Sweden and of the 1999 USA Short Course World Championship Team which competed in Hong Kong.
In 1999, Correia joined the University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs Swimming and Diving Team. She aided the team when they won their title in the 400m freestyle relay. She earned a share of the SEC Commissioner’s Trophy for high point honors. First and only swimmer in SEC history to win an SEC title in all Freestyle events. During her college career she was a 27-time All-American, and 11 Time NCAA Champion

Correia hoped to participate at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She went to the Olympic Trials, but she missed making the team. This was one of the lowest points of her career; she suffered depression, became disappointed at the sport of swimming, and needed psychological help. However, a 2000 Team USA member who remains very close friends with her, along with a psychologist, helped her come out of her depression, and re-emerge as a top swimmer.
In 2001, Correia won a gold medal in the 800m freestyle and two bronze medals in the medley and 400m freestyle relay as a member of the U.S. Team at the 2001 World Championship celebrated in Japan.
In 2002, Correia became the national champion in both the 50y and 100y freestyle and was a member of two winning relay teams at the NCAA Championships celebrated in Austin, Texas. She set the NCAA, American and U.S. Open records with a time of 21.69 in the 50 y freestyle, surpassing Amy Van Dyken’s mark of 21.77 set in 1994. She earned seven All-American certificates and she was awarded the Commissioner’s Cup as the high point scorer in the SEC Championships.
In 2003, Correia earned a gold medal swimming on prelim 400 m free relay at the World Championships. In 2004, she won a gold medal swimming prelims at the 400 m free relay at the Short Course World Championships and earned an Olympic silver medal swimming prelims of the 400m free relay at the 2004 Olympic Games celebrated in Athens, Greece.

Great Job Man! But he messed up.. I watched the race live and when Lezak won he was no where to be found when Phelps was jumping around cheering. He might have helped win the gold but no one will remember he was part of the greatest relay in US history because he wasn’t in that clip of the team cheering Lezak to the finish.

Since I’ve cut my hair I try to swim everyday (even when I’m drunk) but when U live in the ‘hood the pool is always close because someone trashed it over the weekend, a baby was swimming in their diaper or someone looked at the pool too hard. Black folks swimming is not new, if you didn’t know that, you need to recognize. We also ski, play ice hockey, beach volleyball, soccer….the list goes on and on.
Black folks need to stop placing limitations on themselves. White folks may not like it but once we’re allowed the OPPORTUNITY to participate, we excel in every thing we do!
