Young Money’s picks of the litter Nicki Minaj and Drake posed for the cover of the May issue of XXL looking like a streetwalker and a G.I., but we have to admit the caption NICKI & DRAKE DOMINATION: The Rebirth of Rap Royalty caught our attention. Pop the hood for a good old fashioned hip-hop debate — we need to know if you think Nicki and Drake are deserving of these so-called crowns.
Neither Nicki nor Drake has dropped a full length album, but they’ve done features with artists ranging from Jay-Z (“Off That”), Mariah Carey (“Up Out My Face”), Robin Thicke (“Shake It For Daddy“), Usher (“Lil Freak”) and Timbaland (“Say Something“) just to name a few, both have won coveted magazine space (don’t forget the Complex and Fader covers) and Drake is already stuntin’ for Sprite. On the flip side — there are plenty of naysayers on the other side who aren’t convinced either of these two is worthy of all this praise.
With all that said, are these two worthy of being called Rap Royalty without the platinum ALBUM sales — or is the fact that their mixtape claims to fame have made them notorious, reason enough to crown them now? And how many folks feel these two are already doing too much? They’re everywhere, on every song, video, party, concert, commercial, magazine — is it possible they’ll burn out before they even get started? Or will they peak before they even see a release? Some folks are saying they’re sick of these two already!
