Don’t get it twisted though I love my city and for the most part the killing really is relegated to the gangs here, besides that Chicago is one of if not the most beautiful city in the country really only NY, and LA can compare to us.

And a major part of the reason that the violence is spiking the way it has in recent years is because they are tearing down the projects on the southside and you have people who don’t get along moving next door to each other. They have torn down most of Cabrini and Robert Taylor homes which used to be the biggest project in the country and you had 75,000 + residents getting scatered about the city, it not good right now but eventually things will settle down. There trying to gentrify the city so it’s safe to come and all of the southside is not bad either for you visitors the further south you go the rougher it gets don’t go any further than hyde park if you are not familiar with the city.

I’ve only been living in da chi for about 10 months and I already to move back where I came from. Too much drama and its not worth it!

So the police were manhandling this lady when they were arresting her and do you know how the residents in Cabrini Green reacted = they started shooting at the police from their apartment windows!!! LOL, I ain’t lying – I’ve NEVER heard of no sh*t like that… It was kinda funny though because the police had to run for cover and they couldn’t do a damn thing because shots were coming from all over the place and they couldn’t tell and they couldn’t fire back… It was caught on tape and shown on the nightly news… How you gonna have a gun sh

Yeah I’m a bit upset because my husband and I were just up in the Chi and GI in February and I was at my mom’s place in Gary and I told them that we had a pizza dinner date with my husband’s cousin in Chi to get some pizza. So they were like, we can order you all some pizza from Uno’s in Merrillville. But I was like no we have a prior engagement with his cousin. So they invited us to “Connie’s pizza” and I must admit I’d never been there before and I was disappointed. It was nothing like Uno’s or Giordano’s. I was kicking myself for turning down the Uno’s pizza in Indiana. If it wasn’t for the Garrett’s Popcorn and the Harold’s chicken we got the next day I would have been too upset with that visit back home

True, true… but more than psych treatment, I’d start with jobs and education. Until they address the poverty, all the “stop the violence” marches in the world won’t change a thing.

Personally, I find the situation itself deplorable. And the reaction is wholly racist. I guarantee you if suburban, white folks were catching bullets, there’d be hell to pay. There would be “trouble in the heartland.”

But when it comes to communities of color, politicians and police are all too willing to CONTAIN the problem. Let them nigyas kill each other as long as it doesn’t spill over into the nice, gentrified areas.

There needs to be an influx of jobs and the city could probably use a Rudolph Guiliani-type mayor as well. There shoudn’t be any area of the city where this kind of behavior is tolerated or police are scared to roam.

This situation is the afterbirth of years of political, economic and social neglect. It’s going to take medicine (in the form of jobs) and disinfectant (in the form of zero-tolerance policing) to get it under control.

I used to live not far from there and there is always some sort of violence there, and i had to leave because i have a child and her safety is my top priority… However violence is everywhere… it doesn’t matter if you live in the nicest suburb or the worst part of the hood it still exists, maybe not to this degree, but it still exists. Nor does it matter what color you are…Yes chicago does need to do better but guaranteed this sort of thing happens everywhere….if they dont fix this soon they will probably have the military patrolling our streets since CPD can’t come up with a solution… We need to do better

I don’t totally understand the Chicago Gang Culture but I was out there and I talked to a lot of different people who kept it real with me & they told me what was up…

In general kids need something to do to keep them busy and off the streets and so open gyms & recreation centers are ABSOLUTELY needed in the Hood across America & Chicago… When I was there they informed me that the rec. center was ONE of the places where there was “peace” between the rival gangs and that was because that’s where their children were and so as a result the rec. center was OFF LIMITS for foolishness minus the niglets shooting dice in the bathroom…

Anything to keep the youth busy and out of trouble or else they are bound to get into something they ain’t got no business getting into or doing dumb sh*t just because…

Im from the Southside of Chicago. We are one of the most segregrated cities in this country. Because of that the gang culture is ramapnt. Often you do not joins here, they are apart of your blueprint. Here there are sets that are basically neighborhoods, like Killer Ward, Motown, Sirkon City etc….and if you live within those boundaries that becomes your identity. Even if you defy the odds you still will have brothers, sisters, uncles, neighbors that are attached to that lifestyle. Everyone is then affected.

The projects were torn down and as mentioned above those people have moved into those terrotories and they have enemies there or they simply attempt a takeover. There is no longer any organazion amongst the gangs. So there is no law within the neighborhoods. No one respects any one or any thing. They simply dont give a $%^!

There are no jobs. High youth pregnancy rates and there you go. What is sad is that the South Suburbs are just as affected. People who attmepted to escape the qaualms of the inner city have been attacked. Those same people are next door with Section 8 vouchers. Unfourtunatley, many of them bring those problems, mentality and culture there. And know the cases have more than quadrupled in the South Suburbs as well.

I feel you but know its not that simple cause a lot of these fools is just that fools and Job, recreation, schools and all that will help a few but without changing the mindset of alot of the youth it ain’t gonna work. The problem with kids from the hood is that more times than not they come from dysfunctional homes and the environments are f*cked up = they see nothing but bad stuff in the home and in their surrounding areas… And guess what the cycle repeats itself generational sometimes

I think it’s a generational thing to tell you the truth…

Among other negative things affecting them i.e., different men coming in & out of their homes (*calling this & that ni@@a “Uncle”), not knowing who their real father is…

These kids are upset because there’s no food in the fridge, they ain’t wearing the freshest gear, etc…

That’s where the job thing comes into play and why I disagree with you on employment… AND at the job if they are fortunate to run into somebody who’ll be a good mentor and/or somebody they can talk to about stuff going on in their life – there’s no telling what kind of impact that’ll have in the direction they go in and the choices they’ll make…

Having grown up during the drug & hustling period of the late 80′s & 90′s I’ve seen what giving kids summer jobs and open gym after school programs can do and help keep kids busy, off of the streets and thankfully out of jail…

The people that initiated these programs have NO IDEA of how man lives they saved and changed because of those things!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a series of shops that were initially hobby and custom bike shops which allowed me to spend time with the youngsters much like those you’ve been in contact with and it became apparent to me that they needed help and my shops went from retail to computer labs and tutor workshops. That became an issue because of all the violence directly outside my doors past the safety I could provide daily so I worked out a program with LAUSD where instead of kids receiving credits for working in the local mall they’d tutor grade schooler’s and they themselves would be mentored by various professional, Attorney, Doctor, Fireman or whichever profession or career course they chose to follow though college…….Then I hit the gutter to work where I think I’m most effective………..

I would totally agree that its a generational thing and unfortunately the heads in these instances are much older, aren’t trying to hear shyt about no programs and since they have ghetto success (The usual trappings of the drug, prostitution trade) they have captured the loyalty of the youngsters who want to travel the easy road to the same. And for those of you reading this that can’t take part in a program you can start at home with your own family, family members (cousins, nephews. nieces) and/or those bad a$$ neighbors’ kids…

Kids are like clay and we can mold them literally into whatever we want…

Some of us just don’t know how lucky we are to have been raised with the parents that we have, the decent neighborhoods, etc… Y’all a$$es could of easily been born in the hood or in Africa with flies flying all up in your faces with bloated bellies wondering when you’re going to get your next meal…

MY HOPE IS THAT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WILL REALIZE HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO IMPLEMENT THE SUMMER JOBS PROGRAM ESPECIALLY NOW !! MY 14 YEAR OLD SAYS HE DOESN’T WANT TO WORK BECAUSE HE JUST WANTS TO HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER, WELL I’M NOT HAVING IT!! HE WILL BE WORKING THIS SUMMER AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED. Something else for real here in the shy – these kids need family’s – It’s time to put on some peer pressure when our cousins or brothers and sisters stop doing good by their kids. Cultural norms can be shaped and we can hold each other up to a better standard.

try raising those babies of yours- not the way you were/weren’t-but the way you wanted to be…
there’s always 2 sides of any given situation; why must one sink to the lowest denominator?!!?
and, too, we all must take personal responsibility for our communities….. we see & don’t see for whatever reason: indifference,
fear, whatever….. we’ll use our cellies to take a picture to post on youtube, but we won’t call 9-1-1…. we want someone to step forward if one of ours is a victim, but we don’t snitch………. we want better, but we don’t want to get involved to make things better…….
so, whose guilty?

The violence will continue because it’s all part of a bigger scheme. Some of these young people have no positive leadership, morals or the ability to learn a trade in order to one day have career. Some have no idea you can earn more money driving a garbage truck. being an electrician, carpenter, computer tech, HVAC tech or bus driver than being some damn $100 a night hustler. These type of neighborhoods need careers and free career learning centers. But they will never come the REAL RULERS of this country can make more money locking ni**ers up than collecting taxes from them.

Its a shame to say it but I don’t ever think to help young people other than my sons, and nephews. These streets are dangerous and I try to keep them isolated from all the B.S. But now I may try to bring some of the neighborhood fatherless children into the mix. I can see some are being taught life’s lessons by 18yr olds. And we all know 18yr olds don’t know shit. I’m going to try to make a difference in someones life. My oldest is 16 I should have been trying to make a difference in my community before he was born.
