Re:Cindy McCain- My grandmother and I were talking about this last night. My grandmother thinks it’s something more severe because Cindy has had a stroke in the past, and it’s also been revealed (some time back), she has problems writing as a result of the stroke. So maybe it’s something from the stroke that didn’t go too well.

I really don’t care for the pic (which some may interpret as intimidating) or headline on this article on Michelle – along with the recent New Yorker cover and other depictions of this prospective First Lady have fed into some disturbing stereotypes of African-American women that I find deeply offensive. No matter how educated, polished, and accomplished Mrs. Obama is, she is perceived by some to be “aggressive,” “angry,” and to exhibit other negative characteristics. The Pew Center conducted an interesting study recently on public perceptions of Michelle and Cindy McCain and the results weren’t surprising.
Coincidentally, last night on another blog, I came across a link to a new article on the Obamas in New York magazine that also makes an attempt to dissect Michelle’s persona. I haven’t read the article in its entirety, but here’s an excerpt. The title — which made me cringe at first glance — is “Black & Blacker”:
“A prospective First Lady carries a heavy symbolic burden, but the notions that have coalesced to tongue-tie Michelle Obama are particularly dense. She’s a type we’ve rarely seen in the public eye, a well-educated woman who is a dedicated mother, successful in her career, and happens to be black. This has created confusion for some people, who seem desperate to find a negative quality in her: She’s too big, too masculine, too much like a drag queen. While Obama may be able to play with urban tropes, like dusting off his jacket à la Jay-Z or speaking in a black patois when the time calls for it, Michelle has been increasingly forced to curtail her personality during the campaign, lest she attract rumors of uttering a verboten, anachronistic word like “whitey” or find herself labeled a “baby mama.” As much as any political campaign is an extended meditation on authenticity, the question of just how black the Obamas are has become particularly loaded. 3. I think that Obama needs to dress better while on vacay. In his suits he looks great, presidential even. Here he looks bland. I think that he could take some cues from Mr. Sarkozy of France, who really is pretty fashion-forward though so many French are. As for the “strong African features” comment. I’ve seen African sisters with dark chocolately skin with full lips and wides noses who do not have that mean look Michelle Obama has. She is just not an attractive lady (most 1st wives are unattractive or plain like Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan. Jackie Kennedy was the only pretty 1st lady. Not fine, but pretty.). Michelle Obama is not a very attractive lady, she looks like a rodent and a tranny. I give credit to Barack Obama for being able to look past the face and seeing her inner beauty. She is an educated and successful woman, and seems like an overall nice person who’s been demonized by the media based on racist stereotypes that black women are angry, full of attitude, and masculine. Men criticize womens’ looks. Women criticize men’s looks. It is not that it is shallow, but apart of natural human behavior. We all notice looks before a person’s character and values. However, when you do find out more about person aside from their looks, it is up to the admirer when to pursue a mate, solely based on their looks and/or personality. Some people maybe good upstanding individuals, but if the attraction is not there then it is not there. However, all people have different standards of beauty. Some people can see past their own standards of beauty and find someone they would usually find unattractive, attractive.
Al Roker seems like a nice guy with a good personality. How many women want to ***** him (besides his wife)? Whoopi Goldberg is a very cool down to earth and intriguing lady, but not too many dudes could get hard off of her. When you’re a celebrity, you usually have to go through type of thing. It may seem shallow, sometimes it is, sometime it isn’t.
As for Michelle Obama, she is a celebrity, and all celebrities go through this (critique of someone’s appearance). You may not like but it is apart of life and normal human behavior.

Phoenix, I’ve lived on this planet a long time – maybe longer than you (I’m 45 years old). I’m well aware of society and its “norms” and understand the looks obsessed society we live in. My point is whether or not someone thinks Michelle is or is not attractive is mute b/c Barack thinks she is. She definitely has qualities far more important than her outward appearance (great wife, mother, etc.) that would make a wonderful First Lady. That’s what’s going to matter. Now, I realize that’s my opinion.
Oh, and by the way, Phoenix, I do not believe everyone subscribes to the looks thing. I think it depends on one’s maturity level. I know plenty of women that date and have married no too attractive men b/c they had to ability to see beyond the surface and realize that in the long run, looks are the least one should consider if you want a long, healthy, loving relationship. Trust and believe that if Al’s (Rokers) wife wanted him, I’m sure there were others.

Yeah, you’ve been here longer than me, I’m 28yrs. old. I think from your last post you and I do have similar points and concepts when it comes to understanding beauty and personality.
You believe her looks are irrelevant because of Michelle’s accomplishments and position in life. I myself also believe her looks are irrelevant due to her own personal success and her husband’s love. However, people here were critiquing the photo as to whether the magazine’s editor made her look unattractive or that Michelle Obama, herself, is just unattractive to many people. I personally find her unattractive, too masculine looking with rodent like features and a consistent mean look, even when she’s happy. In a grander scheme of things, my opinion of her looks is obsolete when it comes to her husband’s politics and potential White House victory. Because I do prefer an Obama White House compared to what John McCain has in store (I actually prefer Ralph Nader because the Democratic Party is the least of two evils and Nader has solutions that Obama won’t consider or the DNC doesn’t want Obama to consider. But that’s another discussion). But remember that this is a celebrity gossip site, so we are going to talk about things as trivial as Michelle Obama’s beauty.
Look closely. That picture was very obviously photoshopped. The head/face has been tampered with. A cut out of her face was place over another photo of her with folded arms. The two together makes her seem mean. But I’d bet separately, the two photos would suggest entirely different pictures of her.

Phoenix, with all due respect, I agree, we do have similar ideals, however, I don’t think the article was addressing Mrs. Obama’s looks per se (that might be included, but since I haven’t read the article, I don’t know). I’ve been on Bossip long enough to know that the conversations aren’t going to get very be deep. Every once in a while, there might be some intellectual discussions, but that’s few a far between. Bossip is a fun, entertaining website, so I realize how someone looks is going to be the main topic. However, the “What’s So Scary about Michelle Obama” probably has to do more with societies intimidation and stereotypes of black women as the “angry, black, and in your words, masculine, woman.” Let’s face it, if she looked like, let’s say Beyonce or Halle, I doubt people would have much of a problem w/Michelle and she wouldn’t be pulled apart like she has been ever since she arrived on the scene. You are entitled to your opinion regarding how you believe she looks. Phoenix, I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else for that matter to think Michelle is attractive. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I ain’t sweatin’ it.

I adore this woman. I think she is fine as hell, and anyone with negative comments about her looks can post THEIR 40+ y.o. picture! Good grief, she’s not a candidate for Miss America! I’ve never heard anyone rag on Laura Bush, Nancy Reagan or Roz Carter, but all of a sudden it’s necessay to discuss looks when Michelle obama’s in contention for First Lady! Why is that? Some of y’all need a life…
(Sigh). I don’t know what it is exactly, but the constant fawning over Obama like he’s the 2nd coming of JFK…I gotta admit this worries me to some degree. I wouldn’t tell him to abandon his campaign (not that he’d listen to what I’D say anyway), but I just…I just don’t think that the same country that took out the Kennedys are ready for this guy to lead them. To each his or her won I adore Michelle. But to each his or her own. I think one thing to keep in mind is that alot of these mags have something called photo shop and air brushing….Hello!! In an effort to maintain the “angry black women” sterotype they [white audience mags] often photo shop Michelle to look harder or use unflattering pics. I’ve seen her live and she looks amazing to me. Just like the night she was with Barack as he excepted the nomination and many others she looked fantastic. I find it intresting the ones with the most negative things to say have no pic up at all. Get behind a computer screen and keyboard, to talk ‘ish about someone to feel better about yourself. Besides Barack is hittin’ those bisquits regularly, so who give a rats ***** what you have to say or think? Last but not least. Shame on those who even have somethng negative to say about thier kids! What’s scary about her is exactly what was scary about Hillary Clinton: she projects as a monster of ambition, seething with thinly papered over resentment, and domineering in a marriage to a charming but not especially masculine male.
If Mr. Obama should win the election, look for her to seek a policy-making role (hopelessly social-welfare-oriented at that)by year two of his administration.

A lot of men want a woman that will sit and their feet and shut up and can’t stand women like Michelle (or Hillary, since you mentioned her). Oh, regarding your “knowledge” of their marriages and policy making future, who gave you that inside information. I guess you are personal friends with them, right?
OH, and let me add, “the whole black thing” is a big part of it. She’s a standard looking, brown skinned black female and that always gets people’s dander up. I’m sure if she looked like Vanessa Williams, this would be a mute point. I know how society is (black and white) that feel more “comfortable” with a female that doesn’t look afrocentric. We haven’t progressed much, have we?
