I actually got blindsided at lunch not too long ago by a colleague who’s having an affair with a married man. I tried to have empathy, but what I really wanted to say was, “Girl, the man has a wife. I live in Brooklyn too, and there is a lot of interracial dating. My husband is Puerto Rican-some people consider that interracial, others don’t, I don’t care. Short answer-I knew I wanted to make a lifelong commitment to him after about 9 months. It was not “Love at first site”. I’m not a super romantic like that. It was such a strange feeling that I had never experienced before, because, like so many others, I had been so hurt so many times before, to the point that I didn’t recognize at first that he possessed the qualities I dreamed about in my ideal man. I was too busy waiting for the shoe to drop. He told me not to, because it wasn’t going to happen. And it hasn’t, knock wood. So saying yes, when he proposed after several years was a no-brainer. But yes, I didn’t expect it-he definitely surprised me!

Anyone who knows White people know that white men cheat at a way higher rate than Black men because their women have been raised to accept their husband’s indiscretions, seek therapy and move on. It’s extraordinarily rare for a White woman to leave her husband, especially if they have kids. They will do anything to keep the marriage together. Also, White men are more likely to be the bread winners of their households and are used to calling the shots. Once they date Black women, all their cultural programming doesn’t just vaporize and become replaced by some higher moral standing.
I personally know some very good Brothas who never cheated on their woman through many years together or only did so at the end of the relationship when they already had a foot out of the door. But Brothas know what side their bread is buttered on and are often reliant upon their significant other to help maintain their lifestyle. If he is living a comfortable lifestyle it’s more likely to be due to the resources that both parties contribute to the household because Black men can rarely carry an entire household (sorry fellas, my observation). I say all that to say, I still encourage Sistas to date outside the race because there aren’t enough good Brothas to go around. I have a hard working, blue collar man that loves me to death and I love him to pieces, but I’m saddened by the fact that sooo many really quality Sistas are without a man due to the disparity in the ratio of Black men to women, especially in urban areas. Yet I cannot even quantify the number of white women I’ve encountered who are in long-term marriages but possess extremely unappealing characteristics such as: trifling, stupid, crazy, btichy, catty, unattractive, lazy, sense of entitlement, etc. It’s obviously not Black women’s character traits pushing our men away since the alternatives are not anything better. The only ones they’re more likely to have than us are low self-esteem and more amenable to being walked on and pushed over.
Sistas need to keep in mind that White men are used to the privilege of cheating with impunity and approach a dating situation with that in mind. But the bottom line is you need to “Go for Yours”. And don’t sweat the haters!
