The other day, a friend of mine visited me in the lobby of my dorm just to chat while her

laundry was drying. As we were chatting, two young freshmen came by. One of the boys wanted to ‘talk’ to my friend (as in date). She asked him how old they were, and both of the boys replied 18. My friend and I both laughed hysterically because we are both 22 years old. After my friend left, the young men were still hanging around and one wanted to know how he could gain her

interest.

The first thing I told him to do was to pull up his pants! He asked why, and then said he liked saggin’ his pants. I told him to come over to my computer and spell the word saggin’. Then I told him to write the word saggin’ backwards.

I told him the origin of that look was from centuries ago. It was the intent of slave owners to demoralize the field workers by forbidding them to wear a belt as they worked in the fields or at

any other rigorous job. In addition, men in prison wore their pants low when they were ‘spoken for’. The other reason their pants looked like that was they were not allowed to have belts because prisoners were likely to try to commit suicide. And, saggin’ pants prevents you from running.

We as young Black people have to be the ones to effect change. We are dying. The media has made a mockery of the Black American. Even our brothers and sisters from Africa don’t take us seriously. Something as simple as pulling up your pants and standing with your head held high could make the biggest difference in the world’s perception of us. It is time to do right by ourselves. We need to love and embrace each other. No one is going to do that for us.

It all comes down to perception. What people perceive is what reality to them is. We have to change not only the media’s perception of us, but we need to change our perception of ourselves.

Remember all eyes are on you Black Man. All eyes are on you Black Woman. All eyes are on your Black Child. People point the finger at us and expect us to engage in negative and illegal activities, to manifest loud, boisterous behavior, to spend our hard earned money in their stores, buying goods we don’t need, or really want. We have allowed not only the media, but the government and the world to portray us as a ‘sub-culture.’ They have stripped our culture down to the point where the image of Black people is perpetuated as rappers, athletes, drug users, and consumers of junk food, expensive tennis shoes, expensive cars, expensive TVs, cell phones and not investing in homes for our families.

We are so much more!!!!!!!

To all our Black Men: It’s time to stand up. There are billions of Black Women who want to do nothing more than worship the ground that you walk on. We are so in love with your potential. We want to have your back, we want to love, support and cherish every ounce of your being. But with that you have to show that you are willing to be the head of our households. You have to prove yourselves worthy of our submission. We need you to be hard working…Not a hustler. We need you to seek higher education, to seek spirituality. We need you to stand! And trust us; we will have your back. We know that it gets hard. We know you get weary. Trust and believe that there is nothing that a Black Man and a Black Woman can’t handle with GOD on their side.

To all our Black Women: It is also time for you to stand up. It is time for you to stop using our bodies as our primary form of communication. It is time to be that virtuous woman that Proverbs spoke of. You cannot sit by the wayside while our men are dying by the masses. You are the epitome of Black Love. It starts within you. You need to speak with conviction to let not only our Black Men know, but the world, that you are the Mothers of this world. You are so powerful. You are so beautiful. You need to love and embrace every blessing God has given us physically, emotionally and spiritually.

For all our Black Children: We need to love them. We need to teach them. We need to stand up for them. We need to protect them. We need to show them that there are no ‘get rich quick’ schemes. We need to tell them that they WILL die trying if they submit to a life of crime and deceit. We need to teach our children that no one will love them the way we can. And being a basketball player, a rapper, or a drug dealer is not reality. It’s not realistic and only a small percentage of people ever make it as a rapper or professional athlete. We need to teach our children that we can be more than rappers and athletes. We can be the owners of these sports teams. We can be the CEO’s of OUR fortune 500 companies. We need to believe in literacy. I am almost certain if we were to look back to the 1930′s and 40′s, the literacy rates for Black American Children are probably still the same.

Once the child support gets in the rears the father has to pay that amount or get locked up! That is how its going down in chicago. First they intercept his tax returns, then if that isn’t enough they will suspend his drivers liscense, then finally there is jail where all DEADBEATS belong. The system works you just gotta stop crying ladies, stand up and take action! Do your part and make him do his. Simple!

Actually white men do tend to have children out of wedlock…and they tend to do so more than blacks and any other ethnic group do…the largest population of children being born out of wedlock in the US are from white teenage mothers.They are also the largest percentage of people on welfare and foodstamps…which makes a lot of sense when one looks at the ratio of whites to blacks in the Us…how can we have the most kids when we are not even 1/4 of the pop?…Now everyone know that with teenage pregancy comes abandonment…so can we infer that a whole lot of white men leave their kids? You need to stay on topic Africa is still a pretty socially conservative continent. This may not have averted the wars and bloodshed but it has kept the family together. Bare in mind that the “family” in Africa can be a bit different than the nuclear family we are used to here in the West.

Like I said, if you want to talk about the genetic disposition to to murder and mayhem, black Africans arent the worst offenders. Rememder both World Wars? I mean dam, Europeans probably killed half a billion people in the last 500 years. However, most of those deaths were probably a result of famine and diease. The same as in large standing conflicts in Africa.

1) I barely spoke or saw my father after his divorce from my mother. Child support was deducted from his check

2) My father was (before he died) MARRIED to my step-mom (a white woman for whoever above made the comment about not doing it to white women) and my brother prob could not pick him out of a line up. Child support was also deducted from his check…

3) I am not married to my daughter’s dad. She has his last name and he takes EXCELLENT care of her. She loves her daddy

Does he see them? Does he care for them? Does he have RECENT pictures of them? Can he tell you the last time he took them to buy shoes or to the flippin zoo? When you are on the phone can you hear them in the background?

These are not guarantees that he will be a good father if the case aries and you get pregnant but they are excellent indicators.

Ok, this is where we part company. $80,000? Thats above the average median income of any American household. Nobody would be having kids if that was the case. People at that income generally dont have very many kids so there would be zero population growth in this country. Then you might have to increase immigration to replace the population. That causes all kinds of problems. I do understand that people need to be making some money but I emphasize the cohesiveness of the family as opposed to their income. Far more willing to subsidize poor two parent homes than poor single parent homes.

It is in every male/female interest that is paying child support to pay it through the courts (every dime paid). This action will allow them quickly to say. “She needs to take it up with the court,” or if he/she is not paying then the courts will deal with it.

It is very funny how these guys give some much to their kids that is not accounted for and soon as they miss or a problem occurs with the scheduled child support the mother gets on television to complain.

$80,000 might be an income to live comfortably for most but many people make less than that and have wonderful families. It is not about the amount of financial resources but about the time and attention you give to the children. In your theory if someone loses their job and the income falls this means they will no longer be responsible adults.

Besides, in some parts of the country this is WWWAAAAYYY above average. Maybe in the major east and west coast cities $80,000 is necessary but this is not obtainable for many.

I have seen times where guys don’t want to spend time with their kids because of a crazy babymomma. One of my best friends is a male. He has a daughter by a young lady that has been a straight up psycho since they broke up. She has tried to have guys at her house to jump on him when he went to pick up his daughter and many other things. He contacted the Attorney General and put himself on child support. Sometimes a man may want to spend time with his child without having to endure all the drama and violence. Just my opinion.

I did not say all black male that abandon their children are dealing with crazy babymommas! In no way am I making excuses for any man in general that fails to take financial, physical, and mental responsibility for his child. I am proud to say my two children’s black father is a great dad even though we are no longer together(we we’re together for 6 years but never married). He pays his child support on time, we take turns having them on holidays, my children spend the entire summer with him, and he calls me regularly to see if I need a break from them(mommytime). Not all black males that weren’t married to their children’s mothers are deadbeats.

I do atleast 45 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical and another 45 minutes of resistance or weight training.. I also like yoga-laties.. Its pretty relaxing..

Ok, now I am also not trying to be smart, but maybe you should reread your own comment and mines that followed. Again, I already know that these things are not the same as an action (as I stated above).

Now explain to me again, how is it that we can feel sympathetic for someone taken advantage of in a murder, rape, robbery etc. but we can’t do the same for someone whose child was abandoned by their deadbeat father? Why all of a sudden is this victim not worthy?

Actually it doesn’t really matter what any of us think because the LAW recognizes that when one parent doesn’t take care of their child at least financially THEY ARE WORTHLESS AND THE EQUIVALENT TO A CRIMINAL. This is why parents who do not take care of their children at least financially can be subject to a prison term. I think the law is correct. Don’t you?

I originally used the term “victim” in an attempt to try to understand the logic of the “comparison” posed. People who are murdered, raped and maimed are victims. People who are abandoned are not.

Neither mother nor child are “victims.” The victims above have something taken from them (ie life-physical health). A child that is abandonded has had nothing taken from them, but don’t have access to what society thinks they are entitled to.

Reading this blog post just breaks my heart seeing all of this fighting and the like. I have never posted on this site before but I did feel the need to leave a comment. Let me preface that I have do not have any children of my own, but I am a black male that has children in his life, even though they are not my own. My nephew being one of them and then the two children of my ex-employer here in LA. All three are beautiful kids and I like to think that providing a positive male influence has shaped them in some way.

The truth is, guys like Joc and company who won’t even deal with the responsibility of their actions is sickening. If that number of 65% is accurate, then black people are in worse shape than I ever imagined. You know I have always believed in two to tango, but if a woman has a child and raises the child, there is no excuse for the man to up and disappear.

Everyone has urges, but I personally choose abstinence because I cannot afford to ruin my career with an unwanted pregnancy. It is too bad more people do not at least consider that option or contraception “due to the condom not allowing you to feel stuff.”

The worst thing about this is you can’t even say this is an education thing. Plenty of college educated black men do the same nonsense. I am blessed that the black men I have been around my entire life are good men. All I can say for women is, if you truly believe these men are trifling and the statistics back them up, it’s time to take extra precaution.

Heck, I’d rather get a vasectomy than have a child I was going to abandon. Shaking my head indeed.

I just feel that this is the 21st century. Men will always be deadbeats and it’s up to us as women to make the smart decisions. If you don’t protect yourself, still keep the child, then it is your duty to handle. I know I’m going to get a lot of flack for this but I would rather raise my child on my own than make a fool of myself in front of people.

When my sister had a baby and the father up and left, she made damn sure she finished her degree and got herself a good job. It was hard in the beginning but in turn she has raised a confident, self sufficient woman who is now 19 years old. My sister never doubted that it would be hard, but she didn’t go begging.

If a man doesn’t realise the need to be a man and help raise his children, then that’s on him. His punishment will come 10 fold. I truly believe that.

Personally, I also fell pregnant before I got to know my babydaddy. But he was committed from the get go and we were married before our son was born. Praise God because I know I’m lucky. Had he disappeared like others, I have a good job and would have been just fine on my own. I would never have gone to him to ask him to take care of his responsibilities. The decision was mine whether or not I wanted to have my son, and not knowing what the future held, I chose to give life.

It is our choice as women. There are so many other things we can do to prevent ourselves being in this situation. It is different if he coersed you into having a baby and then bolted.

For the record I have “looked into the eyes” of plenty of children “abandoned” by parents. Including my own and those of my brother and sister. Your assertion that parents leaving a child affects their self esteem is an oxymoron (that is not an insult).

Self esteem is exactly that….SELF ESTEEM. It comes from within, not from an outside source. Self esteem grows with accomplishment and overcoming obstacles.

Right. And the average Black kid has a disadvantage. Black boys and Black girls should not have to overcome that obstacle anymore. Get it. We are FU€KED UP!!!! Gangs, drug dealers, Pimps, prostitutes that is what is glamourised by us in the media because that is how the average inner city, predominately black neighborhoods operate. Asian neighborhoods, Jewish neighborhoods, Eastern Asian neighborhoods….all nice places to live. I guarantee that the average household in those good neighborhoods with children, have 2 parent household. Screaming at a big wall. I understand that you just don’t care. Have a good life.
