This is where a lot of people get into trouble, a house is NOT an investment; it is a consumer item just like a car, especially for African Americans.

These things determine appreciation for home prices in a particular neighborhood

• Access to Jobs

• Access to Good Education

• Proximity to Whites

• Access to Major Transportation

Most African Americans neighborhoods (except the very wealthy) have any of these attributes.

When you subtract out all of the maintenance costs, taxes, interest and labor costs into a house, most African Americans lose money when they sell their houses. They just haven’t done the arithmetic.

Houses do provide you with a place to stay and everyone needs that, but it is not an investment. A car provides you with transportation, but it is not an investment.

We may all beg to disagree, but I think that “thinking” that a house is an investment is what got millions of people in trouble with their mortgages.

By no means am I a label ho, but I purchased a hat Marshalls……on the clearance rack, and it was Dereon. I would have gotten it even if it weren’t, just because it’s so cute. But I also saw a few shirts from Dereon near the rack that were NOT on clearance and they should have been. Flimsy as all hell, with that big dumb logo in the front. And the funny thing is, the logo was off center.

when people live outside their means(which is usualy the case in America) or usuallly dont do their research on the diff kinds of mortgages then yes it can become a liability.

but usually real estate is an ASSET because even though the value can go up and down it usually will not fall under the initial price you paid

I think Carolee is trying to jump on the Black bandwagon. Michelle Obama wears a lot of their jewelry. Their line of pears is really popular for the bridal industry. They actually make quality jewelry.

I’m not hater, but House of Dereon stuff is not appealing to me. I did see a jacket I liked, but I thought it was too expensive for the craftmanship. It had odd colored thread, and I didn’t think it was a design, it was just the wrong color. Her shirts are too thin for what she charges.

And honestly, they make their money off retailers purchasing the clothing.

It’s just like the J-Lo line. I didn’t see any reason to pay so much for her clothes. I bought a cute little skirt to go over my swimsuit, but that was colorfast, and it was supposed to be made for the pool.

There’s nothing wrong with celebrities being designers, just make sure you approve the right items. The dresses Beyonce wears in their ads are pretty, but when you actually find one, it’s TOTALLY different than the one in the ad, which is common, but the dress in person is usually so wrong. Straps are not right for the bodice, skirt doesn’t flair out. And with that hips on her, you think she’d actually approve some curvaceous designs, not make clothes for the size 0 set.

i dont agree, i think the mortgage crisis happened when people were buying homes thinking they could fix them up (flip) and sell them. I remember reading an article saying that people were buyin two and three houses at once, but never were able to sell them, so they lagged on payments. Americans black/white/latino/etc..are always trying to live bigger than thay can afford, and that’s why there are so many houses in foreclosure. Now my grandparents bought a three bedroom split level house in Daly City, Ca. in the sixties for around twenty thousand…five years ago they sold it for almost a million. Hardly any whites in the neighborhood, blacks and asians mostly, but it was prime location right off the freeway on a bluff overlooking the westlake district. so i would def call that an investment. they were able to buy a bigger house in French Camp which is an hour away from San Francisco and a brand new car and pay in cash, and have some left over. And why does everyone want beyonce to have a baby? if she wants to she will, if she doesn’t she won’t. But beyonce girl i wouldn’t do it have you seen your huband? it’s not guarenteed that your genes will be dominant. ha ha just kidding

I’m happy to see black people giving us options to spend our money with our own people, that’s the way to grow and obtain economic and finacial power within our race. Just think if we had more black owned car dealerships, department stores, grocery stores, drug stores, etc. Black people spend a lot of money, but we mostly spend it with someone else.

Preach! I have to say that I agree with you. I can’t tell you how many times I have gave that exact speech to my clients who get their tax refunds and immediately go out to buy a house. Yes, all of the people will tell you all of the time that buying a house is better/smarter than renting because you can own the home. But the reality for so many @no name required is that most run into trouble too many times to count before they can say they OWN the house full and clear. Like Al-Anon says, there are many factors involved in owning a home and you do not own it until it is paid off, and if you don’t or can’t pay you will lose your home the same way you lose it if you rent. I tell all of my clients not to buy a home unless you have PLENTY of dough to cover any and damn near everything that could come up, because it’s not yours until it is paid in full. Lots of folks own homes that they can’t even maintain, needs a new paint job, roof is a mess, basement has C.H.U.D., needs new doors and windows, etc. I think that the percentage of people who have situations similar to @no name required is in the minority compared to the numbers of working class folks who think they “own” their home when they are just “renting” from the bank and are a paycheck away from being evicted.

I don’t dislike Beyonce, I just think the media has overexposed her just like they do with most young celebrities! Beyonce is talented, but the clothing line is not on point. I think the jewelery will be sold on QVC. I love that she and her mother work together. It’s good to see a good mother daughter relationship.

I know this is late but I had to weigh in: I work in a mortgage company and a car can be an asset if that vehicle is OWNED by the borrower as well as real estate, stocks & bonds and any funds in a bank, S&L or credit union. This information can be found on your universal residential loan application. Meaning, depending on the situation the two aboved mentioned items can be looked upon as both assets.
