We each have seen both sides of this issue. And we came to a conclusion: People need to get the hell over it! Marry who the hell you want to marry and just do you! Well Black Beauty I’m happy for you. I’m what you called a mut. I also have a wonderful black man we have three sons one is dark chocolate, two are very light like me. I just don’t live in color boundaries. I have Cambodian, Italian, Black, German and Indian in my family. We represent love and what God intended the world to be.

If you look at we all are muts. I know most of you bloggers have a white grandfather or great-grandfather on both sides of my family. I know I do. I also have an Indian grandmother. I consider myself black, but I am a mut. No offense is taken by someone calling a mut a mut. We all are muts. With that being said, there is a problem with black men and the type of women they find attractive. The white man and television has brain-washed a big number of black men into believing bright-light and damn near white, or white attractive, and the darker your skin tone, the uglier you appear. At the same time, I also feel if they make you happy then that’s all that really matter.

My thing is sistas have a problem with standards of beauty as well. Let’s take Usher marrying Tamika for an example. Black women were in a uproar calling Tamika ugly knowing most of them are close to her complexion. Black women was expecting Usher to marry a high yellow chick. I am proud of Usher for marrying a lady whose complexion is close to his mom’s complexion.

It is time to turn the TVs off, and stop subjecting ourselves to the Whiteman’s standard of beauty. Black women stop putting in those color contacts. Stop dying your hair blonde. Be satisfied with your appearance. When you start to feel good about yourself, there will be nothing anyone can tell you except you are so beautiful.

They are steered by coaches and other handlers into “certain circles” (sad to say but they do not lead the lives of typical Black men in America), where Back women are scarce. “Certain women” are trained to “smoothly go for money, regardless of the color of the person holding or soon to be holding it. Those women will put up with things (because they have a goal), whereas the few sistas that the athletes are exposed to are still adhering to certain relationship standards, such as honesty,basic respect, etc. Many times the few black women that remain in these “circles” exclude themselves by failing to do what the “other women” are doing for these now spoiled rotten athletes, and when you add it the negative stuff associated with some black women(see my earlier post) it becomes a no brainer for the athlete. Now this is the TRUTH, like it or not.

Hmm. . . Ray Allen seems like kind of a slender step for those who want to get on the anti-interracial-dating soapbox. But whatever.

I imagine that the decision to marry a white woman comes down to personal characteristics in the end. A black athlete coming from a sheltered, or isolated, background might be taken in initially by novelty and myth (that exotic glamour that some white women exude as icons of a cruel but alluring system).

And in a way, it probably is novelty and exoticism that helps the men decide, but it’s not the exoticism and novelty of their appearance, but of their approach to life. They can be gentle and warm, amiable and loyal in a way that’s black men don’t see very much in personal relations. Black life being what it is, harshness is often the dominant tone in our relationships. Not to mention suspicion, vindictiveness, and aggression.

Everybody has these failings to some degree, of course. But as a rule, white women are raised to be a bit more . . . domesticated: loving, sweet, uncomplaining partners. Just opining, here, but I imagine that’s still a niche option in the lives of black women.

I’m sure there’s a minority of black men who reject black women. For most, I believe the decision to marry outside their race isn’t made with any rejections a priori. I think they find themselves in an unusual situation where they’re in the company of a wider, richer range of personalities and character types. They themselves may be moving from a cruder to a more finished personality or mentality. New needs emerge, perceptions become more supple. They simply find what they need in the new environment.

The harder question is what’s lacking in the black environment that the more developed type (of woman) is slower to emerge or does so in meager numbers?

@ Nina, I know it’s not fair, or right, but there are double standards for men and women in society. The points appear to have been raised as to, “WHY black athletes appear to favor white women versus sistas?” (SO THERE ARE SOME SISTAS WHO STILL OBVIOUSLY WANT ATHLETES FOR WHATEVER REASON.) It seems that people are simply giving their views on the phenomenon. “GENERALLY” speaking, athletes are spoiled and surrounded by “yes” people from the time they are identified as having pro-potential. This becomes the way through which they relate to the world. So when there’s women who will do and put up with “whateva” and women who won’t, these men will, as many non-athletes will, take the path of least resistance. (Note: I am in no way condoning or validating this type of behavior/mentality by the way, but simply trying to explain it.)

as far as black men and their IR relationships, I think its only offensive when the black man has been brain washed to find light/nonblack women attrative and dark/black women less attractive. Since I’ve heard many black men say they do feel light is better than dark, I cant help but think many of the black men in IR relationships feel this way. But you cant assume they are all color-struck, they may just be love struck and the woman happens to be nonblack… and if they are color-struck, its their loss.

I think most athletes believe they deserve the best. To them that means to date and marry only attractive women. A piece of arm candy to show off to other guys. I guess to them beautiful is a White or Latina women and sometimes a light complexioned, mixed race black woman. I rarely see an actor, musician or athlete with a dark black woman. I think in this society long hair, tan skin, big boobs and butt is the ultimate in beauty. It’s sad because attractive women come in ALL shades. But… with that being said, I’m a light complexioned “black” woman. Mixed race and proud of it. And I’m not weak or a pushover nor do I seek to use a black man for his money. I also think its unfair to assume that the lighter you are the less committed you are to the black community.

years, Ms. Andrews grew up in Wareham,

The women will be coming home ward for

an Oct. 20 performance at The Strand in

Providence, opening for Salt-N-Pepa and

Montell Jordan.

Shades has also have recorded two tracks

for Whoopi Goldberg’s upcoming movie,

“The Associate,” with the soundtrack due to

be released next month.

Preparing to launch their first album (due out

next spring), Shades has been in the studio,

traveling across the country and beyond,

and fulfilling the many requests of

magazines for their highly coveted photo

shoots

The women are busy. Ten hours a day are

devoted to rehearsing and vocal instruction.

In between, their journeys have led to them

appearing on the BET network, presenting

at the Soul Train Awards and meeting Stevie

Wonder, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Martin

Lawrence, New Edition and many other

luminaries of the entertainment world.

Ms. Peoples, 24, said she’s not star-struck,

but, naturally, she enjoys meeting the

celebrities. After all, only a few years ago

she was working as a hairdresser at Regis

Salon in North Dartmouth and singing

karaoke at Lupo’s and the United Social

Club in New Bedford.

Drawing influence from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie

Holiday and Anita Baker, Ms. Peoples is

known for her soulful style, whereas the

other group members are more pop and R&

B oriented. The foursome’s styles — and

personalities –melded from the start, after

they were introduced at Northeastern

University five years ago by Wayne Thomas

of New Bedford. Ms. Williams and Ms.

Cardwell attended the university in Boston.

The group has endured skepticism that

they’re only “pretty faces” and a break-up

with their former record label, Atlantic. The

women believe they have gotten knowledge

and strength from both experiences.

“The first situation wasn’t ideal. It didn’t feel

like it was flowing,” Ms. Peoples said of the

group’s time with Atlantic. “But it was a

learning experience. We were able to go

back home, take that with us, and now we’re

able to do it the right way.”

Ms. Andrews, 25, who grew up in Wareham,

is known for her booming soprano voice.

“They say I’m the powerhouse of the group,

the one that sings loud and hard,” she said.

And she’s been practicing that skill longer

than she can remember. “I’ve been singing

since I could talk — that’s what my Mom

says,” Ms. Andrews said. It’s been a lot of

hard work, but it’s a blessing. It’s a dream

come true.”

Shannon Walker Williams, 21, believes

“destiny” brought the four together, and with

the Lord’s help, even greater successes are

on the horizon, she said.

“God led us in the right direction. This is the

way it’s supposed to be. We all experience

ups and downs, but when one door closes,

God opens another. You can’t rush your

destiny, it’s going to happen. It’s just a matter

of time.

“Longevity definitely is the key,” said Ms.

Williams, who studied classical piano for 12

years. “We don’t want to be one of those

one-album wonders and fall off the face of

the earth. Hopefully we can be that female

group that’s around for 10 years.”

Ms. Cardwell, 23, believes that the women’s

tight friendship will help in keeping them

together. “It’s very important. A lot of groups

don’t last long or break up because they

don’t get along. With us, when we met, it was

like fate. We got along instantly and

developed a friendship. We’re like sisters.

The relationship is really, really tight.”

Still, the young women are keeping an eye

on other possibilities, including producing

other artists, modeling and acting. But they

all realize that their music is the springboard

to greater success.

“God willing, the album will do really well

and allow us to do more with the next

album,” said Ms. Peoples, adding that she

would like to work with noted producers

Babyface and Teddy Riley.

“But right now we want to learn as much as

we can about the music industry so in three

or four years we’ll have the knowledge to go

out, find talent and put them on,” Ms.

Peoples said.

But, for now, the women are taking center

stage and loving every minute of it,

particularly, they said, when thousands of

fans are singing the lyrics right along with

them. Each of the local women is looking

forward to the show at The Strand and

performing in front of the home crowd.

“We plan to put on a complete show,” said

Ms. Peoples. “These days, performances

have a tendency to be one-dimensional.

Singing, dancing, setting the mood on stage

– this is what makes us different. We strive

to be entertainers.” .

LOS ANGELES — LeRoi Moore, saxophone player for the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday of injuries suffered in an accident on an all-terrain vehicle in June. He was 46.

Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles, the band said on its Web site.

He was initially hospitalized in late June after the accident on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va. He had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical rehabilitation when complications forced him back into the hospital Sunday.

It was not immediately clear what the complications were. A message left with Hollywood Presbyterian was not immediately returned.

Ambrosia Healy, the band’s publicist, says the group’s show Tuesday night in Los Angeles has not been canceled.
