IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.
“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said.“I have no problem with him doing a show,” Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. “I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

As a former athlete, I have to agree in part with the IOC. Its great to celebrate your achievement, but show good sportsmanship while you celebrate. Its not about black or white, its about showing some class. The other black athletes who have won gold have not behaved like him. Granted, others have more international experience than he does and know how to act. Hopefully, as he races more, he will learn to be more diplomatic.

The IOC needs to fall back, especially in track and field in the name of Tommie Smith and John Carlos. The boy did shake hands, and is actually quite friendly and liked by the other competitors, especially the Americans. One even came and picked him up while he was doing an interview after the 200. He was asked if he thought he would break the record he said no, he said he thought it would be there forever. Not cocky, not arrogant. No, he did not run over as soon as he won and shook everyone’s hand.First of all, he hit the ground. Then he looked for his family,found a flag, went around the track, took pics by the new record before it was erased for the next race, then interviews which the IOC would have really go on him if he did not do. They did not plan for this, did not hype it, did not capitalize on it (see Phelps) therefore are outdone. I think all of the track and field stars have shown great sportsmanship and have really brought excitement to the sports.

I’m saying that if you look up and down this board you keep seeing “let him celebrate however he wants.” That sentiment is found in today’s music, magazines and treatment of one-another overall.

You can be happy for him, his achievement in both races was amazing, but he did act like an idiot after he won. But, from a marketing standpoint it was incredibly stupid. There’s not a lot of money in track, so he needs to make it in advertising and sponsorhip, and his actions to the majority of viewers, were viewed negatively. It’s not because he’s black or Jamaican, it’s because he came across as classless. And the Michael Phelps comparisons are not even relevant. Phelps congratulated the other players even though he showed how excited he was and Bolt could have done a better job from a sportsmanship angle. And like I said before, considering the drug scandals that have predominated in track and field, he could have elevated his sport but he chose to elevate himself.

I gotta say here in the States where I am, there’s definitely an electricity in the air among the Jamaican community.
