Looks like Jay-Z was onto something when he decided to promote all-black everything. A 33-year-old designer out of Paris came up big time this weekend when her “Blackface Collection” won the prize decided on by the public at a fashion festival in Southern France, but the tactics that caught everyone’s attention have some folks feeling perturbed. Pop the hood for a better look.

Every year the town of Hyères in Southern France hosts a fashion and photography festival to showcase emerging talents. Stunning avant-garde things are routinely discovered at Hyères, one of the first events to recognize Viktor & Rolf. This year’s just wrapped and the winner of the prize voted on by the public was Tsolmandakh Munkhuu, a 33-year-old Paris-based Mongolian designer. She painted her models completely black for the show.

The effects of the black paint are incredibly stunning — but considering the history that goes along with blackface, some folks are wondering whether the term is being used just to stir up controversy or if it’s appropriate for the situation. What do you think?
