Spike Lee sticks up for Barack in regards to some people saying he isn’t black enough:
“First, I go by the ‘one-drop rule,’” he said in Denver, where he has come to see firsthand his man accept the Democratic nomination for President. “One drop [of black blood], and you’re black. The truth is, every African-American is biracial. Go back far enough, and you’ll find the massah was in the slave quarters. You can’t be black and go to Harvard Law School? You can’t be black and be articulate?”
Lee also “respectfully disagrees” with Jesse Jackson, who threatened to castrate Obama for publicly chastising missing black fathers. “You can’t hide that stuff,” Lee told us. “Single-parent households, high-school dropouts. The statistics are there for everybody to see. We have to confront that head-on. Don’t be like the New England Patriots – think that you just have to show up,” he preached. “The Republicans are going to try all kinds of hijinks. Shenanigans. Trickery. Flimflam. They’ll try to hornswoggle us, bamboozle us. It’s not a done deal!”

I agree with some of the things he says as well. There is a difference in what we as African Americans look like oppose to the our brothas and sistas from Africa. My great grandmother recently turned 100 yrs old, and she has kept in contact with a woman descended from her grandfather’s slave master. He use to tell her stories of his days as a slave. I know a lot of times people say that slavery was so long ago, but really it wasn’t. If my great grandmother can tell me stories direct from her grandfather that was a slave, it truly wasn’t that long ago.

I disagree with Scooby Dubious, there is plenty of information supporting the multiracial background of blacks in America. Just look at variance in appearance among family members, I am sure we can all attest to this, don’t tell me this only occurs in the southern region of the United States. I have family members that ALL consider themselves black and range from almost pasty pale to a rich chocolate brown, all with varying features and hair textures. The one drop rule forced blacks in to a general category forcing them to deny all cultural roots, ignoring the individual dimension of cultural identity. What does ignoring those ties really help? Even if those ties are recognized because of slavery’s miscegenation, it only condones the racial discrimination that is slowly destroying our world. Refusal to admit that we have a shared history with native and white Americans is like denying that we all are Americans.

Barack Obama is not an African American. He is however, a self said, black man, and I agree. His father though is from Kenyan. While Harold Ford is an African American, Barack Obama is not. He’s a black man of African descent. I see no problems with that…
Also, as far as his comments. Barack mentioned African American men as not being “responsible”, and used his own father as an example. Barack’s father was NOT AA. He was African, and there are MANY African men who have children here, and leave them here, when they go back. Nothing to do with them being black, and they are NOT African American. The Obama campaign did that to win points with other communities. The same speech would NOT be said to other communities, this was done because the black vote is alreaydy on lock..

Not true at all. Actually, black people especially do not perceive my daughter and nephews as black and openly comment and express resentment about them not being black.
Sad to say, there is a lot of envy and hate among black people against biracial people because they are not black. Black people just want biracial to say they are black as some show of unity to even out black people’s “perception” of an uneven playing field where in which biracial people are more favored and privileged.

We need to get past the stereotypes that BLACK people are fools and dumb and can’t speak proper english. THose days are gone – the only people who hold on to that thought are the ones who ARE actually DUMB. The color of our skin does determine if we are black or white – but it doesn’t determine whether you are smart or dumb – your character, personality and level of education determines that factor in both RACES. I believe geography may have alot to do with it. I’m from St. Louis and things are very black and white there. Literally. There is still alot of racism and segregation in housing practices. You just pick a side. So maybe your experiences have been different. My niece is also bi-racial (black and puerto rican) but she identifies herself as black. So this is just my personal experience within my small sampling of society.

I see and respect where you are coming from and your loved one’s experience. I remember when Bossip put up Usher’s baby boy picture folks said the most hateful stuff about a handsome and precious black baby. One reader said “if his hair ain’t soft they should shave it” as if natural black hair is not beautiful?! This is what I mean biracial people, including my daughter and nephews and your neice and Obama, are not black and even black folks judge them as different. I take care to instill pride in blackness in my biracial daughter and nephews but I don’t lie to them and say they are not different (not better, different.) because they will face some unique challenges with black and white folks because of it. At the end of the day we all need to see the beauty in all people and colors. Don’t hate, celebrate.

The shade of our skins really do not tell us much about ourselves. I have white people’s rhesus A- negative blood running through my veins which shocked me as anyone who meet me would say that physcially i look 100% black. My partner who is West African, many people thinks he is mixed raced, which he is not. The part of Nigeria he is from, the Ibo tribe, many are light skinned and it has been so throughout history. Also all mixed raced people are not light-skinned….some black genes are so strong that no amount of mixing can dilute it.

While I don’t dispute that many black Americans have some European blood or a fraction of Amerindian ancestry somewhere down the line, his claims of all African-Americans being “biracial” or even “multiracial” don’t hold water.

His statement about the “m*****ah” being in slave quarters is offensive, because that is not true of the biracial and multiracial people in today’s world. I’m quite familiar with my personal family history. None of my ancestors were American. As far as I know, there were no rapes resulting in the different phenotypes seen in my family.
This is 2009. People are free to be with whomever they wish. I will be marrying a white man this June. He is kind, loving, and loyal. His family accepts me because they realize that I care about him.
The Obama family is beautiful. I admire Michelle Obama’s poise and sensitivity. She is a very cl*****y woman. Their children are adorable. They seem to have a solid marriage built on mutual love, trust, friendship, and respect. How can you go wrong with that?
