Our “Divorce of the Year” has come to settlement:
Giants great Michael Strahan and his ex-wife, Jean, have settled their legal battle over how big a slice of his fortune she should get. But a fight over how much child support he must pay will continue after an appeals court decided the $214,745 a year ordered by a trial judge is too high. The Strahans’ agreement on division of assets was sealed by the court, and their lawyers refused to divulge the details.
The retired football star was ordered in January to fork over $15.3 million to his ex-wife – but he only coughed up about half and filed an appeal on the rest. Jean Strahan’s lawyer, Ellen Marshall, said her client was pleased with the outcome. “I feel happy that the Strahans were able to resolve their difference and focus on their children,” Marshall said. “I think they set an example for other couples.”
The agreement, though, isn’t the end of a dispute full of bitter accusations of physical abuse, infidelity, wild spending and even charges that Strahan used a hidden camera to peep on one of Jean’s sisters.
A New Jersey appeals court reversed a lower court ruling that ordered Strahan to pay almost 20% of his annual income in child support for their 4-year-old twins. The panel questioned some of the expenses Jean Strahan listed, including $27,000 a year for clothes, $36,000 a year for “equipment and furnishings” and $3,000 for audio-visual expenses. The court also felt the amount should be lower because Jean Strahan is capable of getting a job and told the trial judge to reconsider the figure. “Mr. Strahan was gratified with the result and feels his legal position has been vindicated,” said his lawyer Angelo Genova.

Maybe its just me or the way I was raised but I have never been one to put so much value on money or material things. thats not life. MOney would not have any power over whether i love you and if i want to spend the rest of my life with you. I would marry for love and hope my partner marries me for love. All money does is give some ppl a reason to feel purpose with their life. Something to strive for…but at the end of the day…its just a distraction. In 2008 the vast majority of families have two sources of income so shouldn’t “stay at home parents” not be worth addressing? If someone agrees to be a “stay at home parent,” that is a “risk” they should fully understand.

Yes, I know of Brittney and K-Fed. Brittney has to pay Child Support because K-Fed (rightfully) has custody of the children. Even you must admit that Brittney is/was crazy. So basically Brittney deservedly lost CHILD SUPPORT and Jessica gambled and lost. The two cases presented are out of 100’s I can give for men that have to pay alimony and child support.
I am also aware that some women do pay alimony/child support etc. That is the overwhelmingly minority situation though.
The point remains for most men marriage isn’t financially feasible. It just too big a risk for a system structured and biased against them.

If TWO people have sex and get pregnant the man is bound by the decision of the female because the pregnancy is HIS “fault” (even though women have more contraceptive options).

Well actually, I don’t think we are in agreement. What I believe in is “personal responsibility” and “clear understanding of consequences.”
“The pen is mightier than the sword.” That’s why “stay at home parents” should have in writing the agreement with their spouse specifically detailing how much income (if any) they are “entitled” to. With something like that in writing it would quickly resolve a lot of divorce disputes and breadwinners would rethink a lot of these situations that can get ugly.
Courts have supported people for making risky decisions and in the end we all pay for it. Those benefits you mentioned are subsidized with either your tax dollars or from your dollars contributed to retirement plans.
If people realized the consequences of their decisions they would make better decisions. As it stands now, people are taking their chances one way or another in court. A required do*****ent would force people to view things from a “worst case” scenario and plan accordingly.
My mother knew and understood the risk she was taking. Therefore she prepared herself for a “what if” scenario. Something a lot of people choose not to do by convincing themselves, falsly, they are “entitled” to something.

I think each divorce settlement should be taken on case by case basis. Yeah IF you love them you will help each other get your ***** right, so you have all these issues, but people are selfish even when they are in love…they are just running off the fumes of love, when you tell them that marriage requires you to work as a team even BEFORE your marriage, their like “HUH? I clean shop, mine and his. I spend a lot of time at his place and he’s normally gone from morning til night and i’ve been known to pick up at his place, wash his clothes, cook dinner. Sometimes, i will run his errands. That shyt was HARD as hell at first, for real though! It took me a minute to get to that point, but i’m here now. At first it was like a slap in the face, cause i’m you know “Ms Independent” i do my own damn thing and i couldnt understand for the life of me how my mom and sis cater to their husbands…now i get it.
And honestly, i do have his back financially if he needs me. It hasnt come to that, but i know if i needed him i would have NO problem, so i wouldnt have a problem returning the favor.

I’m not his personal *****istant, i do have my own job to go to daily but mine allows me the flexibility to help him out when he needs it. Thats the point of being in a relationship, its give and take. I give, but trust, i take also. Like i said earlier, its still a learning process but this is not just ANY man and it damn sure aint EVERY man since this is the second serious relationship i’ve ever had (i do long term, first one lasted 7 years, this one is going on 4). I know him and i love him enough to be there for him. If i cant count on you to run my errands, if you have time, when you have time, then Y am i with you. Shyt, i gotta eat too, so he will have a home cooked meal. I’m prepared for the role of a wife when that time comes, my momma raised me well baby girl. At the same time, trust me i hold down my own! The joy in catering to a man 24/7 is that it gets reciprocated. We get our evenings together, late mornings when possible and always Sundays, cause you know, we gotta go to Church. He’s also off on Mondays. And he does his share of c*****s girl. He aint handicapped, i’m just there to lend a hand. I dont do lazy men! As far as the diseases, girl, i dont worry about that shyt! Gone are the days when i worry if my man is out cheating…if he dont already know what he got at home, then i’m not fina try to convince him. That boy aint crazy, we talk very many times a day. And i do condoms, just in case. He aint bringing home nothin to me! After four years, no kids, no diseases, we got that covered! So, i appreciate your concern, but i’m good!

yes and yes to both questions..I am a firm believer in whatever you came in a marriage with is what you will leave it if things go sour. But it shouldn’t go sour if you do all that you can to keep it sweet. Slide the best advice I could give to someone who is single and looking to marry, is question everything, and if your still not sure then you’re not ready. I think a lot of us get so caught up in the dress, the flowers and we get so excited about the details of the “wedding”, we somehow lose sight of the actual unity, and what it entails. I’ve only been married for 3 yrs and in those 3 yrs my husband and I have separted twice…thats some sad *****! Don’t rush it, and just be ready.

More like I should have made him sign one! Ummm, I guess it doesn’t really matter to me all that much, I mean if the shoe was on the other foot and he had a lot of money, I wouldn’t be offended if he asked for a pre-nup. We came into this marriage very financially sound. He has money I have a little more (hahaha!), but ultimately I just never thought about it because outside of our personal issues we are having in our marriage, we have a strong financial foundation. Kids in private school, bills paid on time, savings, etc. No problem with the pre nup.
