Quote Of The Day: M.I.A. Says Jay-Z “Sold Out” And Nas Was “About The Knowledge”

M.I.A. Jay-Z Nas

Lil Miss Controversy, M.I.A. shares her thoughts on Camel and Nas:

“Jay became the biggest representation of rap music who’s still alive, started dating Beyoncé, everything was so much bigger and better with Jay-Z. I hope people don’t think that that wins.

“The fact that Nas didn’t become all this sort of stuff changes people’s perception about the music and the work he achieved in his lifetime. I don’t wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but I just feel like we have to wait another 10 years to see what happens.

“Jay-Z’s ambition was to become like Frank Sinatra, a household name all over the planet, and own a casino in Vegas and stuff like that. And I think Nas was really sticking to knowledge. I still think the biggest point about hip-hop is in there somewhere, what happens to those two artists.”

She makes some valid points. Discuss…

I don’t wanna say that Jay-Z sold out, but I will say that the man rally likes to do a lot of business deals.

  • ladyinblue

    *really

  • Jaytee

I’ll never understand why the comments of these ‘small fish’ garners any attention from the media. This chick couldn’t afford a doghouse on Jay Z’s property. When you reach his level of status and income, maybe I’ll be interested in what you have to say.

  • http://www..myspace.com/gazfnest YoMama

I always have this same discussion with hip hop heads and I do agree with her and Imma keep it 1000 like always I’m not really a fan of Jay’s music or his wife its all 2 packaged for my liking!
The only songs of his that I like are all with features he just doesnt’ do it for tha girl!

  • LYRICS

this is gonna be a battle that i DO NOT want 2 participate in!!!!

    Jaytee
    )))))))

so u have to be paid to have an opinion? *smh* It is fair 2 ask does his music lack substance!

  • Matix B

Yup agree 100%. Jay-z changed after he got bigger; Nas has always been about the “art” regardless of money. Jay-Z is an over saturated biter just like his wife; I lost total respect for him after he retired than came back for the money.

  • OOOKay!!!!

Here goes another “one hit wonder” trying to stay relevant. I guess since she has had her baby; it’s time for her to start bringing in some mulahh!!lol…

  • Matix B

Money won’t mean shyt in the coming years….status won’t mean shyt in the coming years, the only thing that will matter is survival.

  • mz. factz

i dont trust jay he seem shady n a cradle robber. dis dude look like garboo n bey wouldnt give him a double take if he wasnt paid. money make anyone look like a dime

  • Dwayne

    M.I. Who??????? Oh yeah, her!

  • Cobbito

What a bozo M.I.A is for letting that come out of her mouth, though i kind of agree with her comment in regards to Nas being about knowledge, the bigger thing with NAS is he doesn’t care about the glitter and gold, he’s cool doing him, as for the “i don’t want to say Jay sold out” comment dude makes great music, first and foremost, everything he’s become is because of his MUSIC, which is hip hop….bozo’s stay ishing on Jay but dude came from poverty, single mother household, hustling the block and look what he’s become…..hating a** people should fall back…

  • BACK2BLACK

    BEEN SAID IT ALL ALONG.

IF YOU ARE EDUCATED OR ABOUT SOMETHING YOU UNDERSTAND.

THE JAY-Z AND BEYONCE SOLD OUT OR CULTURE IN ORDER FOR THEM TO CROSSOVER. WHEN ARTIST ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH THE MONEY AND CROSSING OVER OUR HIP/HOP RAP IS SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER!!

CAN’T WAIT UNTIL OPRAH STARTS “OWN” A REAL BLACK NETWORK!!

CROSSING OVER IS WHAT KILLED OUR RAP-

IN GUINESS WORLD BOOKS RECORDS EMINEM IS THE GREATEST.( A CROSS OVER ARTIST= THANX DRE”)WTF

    RAP IS DEAD!!!!

  • LaDiva

    Love Nas.
He’s a very deep and thoughtful rapper.
Sad to see that rap is so watered down with trash and stupid lyrics nowadays.

  • OOOKay!!!!

    @ Lovelybubbly

    I couldnt agree more!!!

  • AMAZING!

I personally don’t think Jay-z sold out and I will tell you why.

Who is to say what Jay-z really wanted – did he ever say he wanted to bring knowledge? The fact is Jay-z’s ambition in life was probably getting his rap game started and making a lot of money.

While Nas (who is my personal favorite) didn’t care about money to begin with or worldwide fame, but just to make some contribution to music.

  • london girl

i understand what she is trying to say. i was never a huge fan of jayz but glad that his status has changed, can’t knock a brother down as long as he remembers his roots.

always loved nas but even he let me down with the whole im a n/ig/g/e/r quotes but the guy is talented and hate that his ex is bleeding him dry.

Isn’t the goal of every music artist to be household names, or “mainstream?” If you’re not, how will you continue to be able to put out music? If this is what you do for a career, you need to market yourself as much as possible to earn as much money as you can. All yall hating Jay-Z, if given the chance, would do the same thing he’s doing right now – which is grinding as hard as possible to achieve your dreams. The Greatest to ever pick up a mic

  • DeShawn

Ooochie Wally? K-I-S-S-I-N-G? The Flyest? C’mon son! Knowledge? Knowledge?

When the last time MIA was in the subways rapping/singing or whatever she does for free? Anybody trying to get a record deal (MIA/Nas/Jay)… Anybody with marketing plans (MIA/Nas/Jay)… done sold out.

Only difference is… some run it (Jay)… some do it well in a different way and keep it moving (Nas)… others is hungry and talk about selling out (MIA) while giving interviews to MTV.

  • Matix B

HIP HOP IS NOT A PRODUCT it is modern African culture that has been diluted by many and respected by few.

  • 4mxperience

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, and they have the right to express it. I’m not mad at that. Neither Jay-Z nor Nas puts food on MY table, so I’m not about to play guard dog for them. I don’t think she disrespected them anyway.

  • NUFFSAID

LOOOOVE LOOOOVE LOOOOOOOOOVE AND WILL ALWAYS RESPECT NAS. Big ups to M.I.A for speakin TRUTH.

  • Butter Pecan

Its so sad how black people stay on JayZ’s
d i c k. He doesnt give a rats a s s about any of us. All he talks about is cars and clothes and vacation spots that 98% of people will never be able to afford ever.I have lost all respect for him because he has lost he soul for the love of money. But when you die you don’t ntake the money and fame with you. All you are left with is you messed up soul.

But Jaz isn’t done…And this is just the United States, where everything is bull caca.

  • sara

as a true hip hop head to begin with i was never really into jay-z from years back and never got the hype he was always mainstream and most who didnt like real hip hop liked him, however i did have some of his stuff in my collection but to date gave it away. However hip hop always consists of various artists and no two people should be the same. They are boastfull people they are resevered people, they are people who dont give a damn and others who do, however at present we have a full circle of ignorance with no variety of good bad nor middle. Just like no one has the same personality all music should not be the same context or theme or it will become as brainwashing or worship

  • sara

now i have left hip hop alone and got into a who lot of other stuff which has balance

  • bumpy

Don’t start dissin’ M.I.A.cuz she has a an OPINION on those two iconic M.C.s. Fact is when you start dealing with Billion dollars companies, having breakfast with billionaires, and shmoozing with people so far removed from hip hop then it is easy for one to say that he has SOLD OUT! Just ask Dash and Beanie and them. And further more, this piece was from a magazine interview and the question was asked of her about the 2. Ya’ll acting like she’s just talking greasy for no reason!

  • http:chokolatemilk.blogspot.com Choco

I don’t know if Jay Z sold out maybe he changed directions in life I’m not really a fan but I don’t dislike him either-do I think he and Bey are a product marriage yes but that’s their business I don’t care-Jay also mentioned he was retiring from HIP HOP and then he didn’t just like BEY did I don’t follow either one of them to closely but I just think calling a man who because more interested in investing his money to make more money isn’t considered a sell out but a business man

  • Bopa

Who really cares what M.I.A thinks. I supported Nas during his beef with Jay but her comments aren’t relevant. What’s wrong with a black man getting married and creating businesses that hire other people?

  • name

SHE IS TELLING THE TRUTH. JAY IS ONE OF THE BEST RAPPERS BUT HE WENT THE ROUTE THAT WOULD SELL HIS RECORDS. I STILL HAVE MAD REPSECT FOR NAS. MOST RAPPERS THAT “STICK WITH THEIR KNOWLEDGE” LIKE NAS, THE ROOTS, EVEN COMMON, DONT GET MUCH AIR PLAY AS THEY SHOULD BECAUSE ITS NOT WHAT THESE IDIOTS WANT TO HEAR. THEY RATHER LISTEN TO GUCCI MAN AND WOCKA FLOCKA ON A TRACK TALKING ABOUT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

  • mj007

I LOVE M.I.A …. she is real and herself….she never denies who she is, where she comes from and nor does she try to please anyone!!!! She is entitled to her opinion and by all mean has a right too!!! She may not be the big thing in the States but elsewhere she is HUGE!!!!

  • kool

@Jaytee – STICK TO THE FACTS??? M.I.A. is married to and has a son with a BILLIONAIRE so do your reasearch???
Peaople always get petty and tey to make it about material things and how much money someone has or made?
I’m sure you see ANOTHER caption that says nba baller Curry is BROKE???? It’s not about what you make – it’s not even about how you spend it – it’s about who you are homes and what you represent. ANd if you’re an Artist it “should” be about your legacy…
NAS and Jay Z – hmmmmmmmm??

  • http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll200/sinistaviclove/Other%20pics/Bobfrommarketing.jpg sinista

Does it matter! Hip Hop is dead! No matter how they try to revive it, it keeps going into cardiac arrest. Grand Master Caz, Melle Mel to KRS-One, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Tupac, Biggie, Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, Eminem, DMX and da list goes on come to an apex because the industry put hip hop up for sale. There was even a time when Nas tried to go commercial but realized it wasn’t him. Now you have Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane and everyones mom thinks they can get in the music biz. There are more rappers than listeners! Its pathetic..At first, I thought she was wrong but after I took a overall view, its not just about Jay Z or Naz but the death of a culture.

  • KENNEDY

Sad but true. I remember a few years ago Heineken offered Nas an endorsement, to be their spokesperson and appear in the commercial. Nas told them he could not have his name attached to a liquor brand because he has a child. JayZ jumped right on it, he’d probably sell his mama for world domination.

  • Ms Natural

@Jaytee Sorry hun come again she married money also had a baby.

  • LovelyLisa

Jay-Z said himself that he dumbed down his music to sell more records.

If that isn’t the truest definition of a sellout, I don’t know what is.

Never was a Jay-Z fan, never will be. Anyone who will do ANYTHING for money is not worthy of respect from anyone, especially not me.

  • ReALiSt AKA ReALeSt (YoUr HiStOrY iS tOo CoMpLeX & RiGiD fOr SoMe WeStErN cRiTiCs)

This ain’t news – I’ve been saying this since I’ve been tiddy f*cking @buttacupp… My SN is from Nas’s lyrics in his new album “Distant Relatives!”.. The best Hip-hop album this year so far by a mile!!

  • Matix B

Realest your girl is blowing you up on the Kim K thread.

  • flawda

LOL at Jay selling out, Jays first single off his first album is called DEAD PRESIDENT. Som of you idiots need to check dudes earlier career because he has always been on the successful path, the problem is, he became too successful and you broke nigglets can’t stand it.

I respect Jay-z i’m gonna make it no matter what mentality more than the so call “knowledge” bs. All that knowledge crap is is pandering to black folks, black folks love hearing about how life is hard blah blah blah.

  • ReALiSt AKA ReALeSt (YoUr HiStOrY iS tOo CoMpLeX & RiGiD fOr SoMe WeStErN cRiTiCs)

    @Matix B
I feel like giving you some “ochie wally” experience – I don’t hate girls like Jayz but you can’t blame JayZ because he was called “ugly” by girls as a kid…

What’s your measurement??? I wanna buy you some underwear ya dun noe..

  • chaka1

Money does not always equal success. At the end of the day you have respect yourself and what you did to earn that money. Entertainers have been selling out for decades. You see them in their mansions and driving luxury cars, yet they are miserable because they have no integrity. That is something you can’t purchase.

Jay Z seems more level headed, but I hate his use of the N-word and some of the crap he spews in interviews. The secret marriage with Beyonce is just strange.

You knew hip hop was a downward spiral when nearly every successful rapper, male or female, started going to jail. It’s basically hip pop now.

  • flawda

When Jay said “he dumbed down his music”, he meant he used less double entandres and wordplay. Reasonable Doubt went over most of you simpletons heads, so don’t act like he wasn’t right in what he said. Tupac dumbed down his lyrics too, dude was a pretty simple lyricist and never really said anything witty or criptic.

Keep getting money Jay, half of these mfs, talking Nas is kicking knowledge didn’t even buy DISTANT RELATIVES and that’s why the album is flopping right now (50 thousand sold in the first week).

  • IceColdBunny

Lets not forget, Nas sold out too back when he was on that Nas Escobar, mafioso type steez. That was probably when he was the most popular. But, nas has come full circle to where the essence of hip hop is still true to him, but he kinda lost me on the whole n**ger thing. Jay-z is a brand and shawn carter is about makin doe which makes it hard for me to be a jay-z fan. Anyway, didn’t nas and jay already squash this beef

  • jswang

What is she talking about? What’s wrong with someone wanting to be a household name? People are retarded. You should dream and think bigger than the block or rap.

  • yall r ignorant black folks..stop believin the hype

How bout yall hop off Jay z’s d I c k. Yall ignorant muhf*ckas act like he’s Jesus himself. Money aint everything!! Yall r brainwashed. PS to u groupies…MIA is internationally paid too and has more than one hit dumb f*cks. Step ur music game up before you go at her! Jay rapped over an MIA sample. Ever heard “Swagger Like Us”? ….I’m out.

  • The Mrs

If Jay’s a sell out, then Nas better become one too, his baby mama is milking him dry!

  • just saying!!!

You all must forgot M.I.A, don’t need this beef to make money! You can hurt Jay more than he can hurt her, she had a baby by a billionaire jewish boy and we all know who runs the record industry? If you said jewish people, your right! so know the whole story before you make comments and we all know jay wants 2 be jewish! Well more like the boy family is billionaires.

  • flawda

LOL at yall who say money aint everything, say that to the people in New Orleans, Sean Bells family, Water for Africa, etc who Jay-z donated money to. Yall would rather get caught up in these empty words these so call knowledge rappers kick, when they don’t give back to anyone. They are all words!

  • LovelyLisa

Jay-Z is a sellout pure and simple.

I don’t begrudge anyone for making a living. but at what cost?

His early music truly suggested that he was shallow, money-hungry and hated women. Maybe it was for show, but the damage is done.

In his later music he makes shallow attempts to sound intelligent, I guess to show “growth” and “pander to black folks”, but he has the depth of a teaspoon, so it had no bite.

    I LOATHE his music. PERIOD.

  • Tigerlily212

I like MIA and think there’s truth to what she’s saying..Jay Z w/o a doubt sold out and Nas has always been more enlightening w/ his lyrics but overall I agree w/ Wifey 06 in that no one is doing hip hop justice right now bc it has been taken over by others with other intentions. What’s popular and in demand is crap while the truth and things of subsistence is hidden or not as readily available.

  • rayna

Hustlers and boosters embrace me/And the music I be making

Actually Jaytee she can definitely buy Jay Zoo a doghouse! Try a billion of them because she and her husband are the heirs to the Seagram’s fortune which is over $3 billion! “A billi, a billi, a billi” you should read up on her! She’s a great rapper and a amazing artist! Her paintings have sold for about $200-$500k!

  • Gabulous

First off, M.I.A. is the truth and she is a really talented artist. Her points were not to diss Jay-Z but to show how these artists can transition into different avenues. Jay-Z is on his business and had to set aside some of his original rap game that he started with. Nas stuck with the old school purpose and style of rap and isn’t as marketable. She’s right.

  • MS.BRILLY

    @flawda

Money is NEVER everything. People in New Orleans who lost thier family homes, lost history, lost sentimental items that can never be replaced would tell you that money can’t get those things back. Money can’t bring Sean Bell back. I guarantee that if Nicole Bell had a choice between money and Sean back, it wouldn’t be the money.

  • Science

Real talk , Jay Z is chasing a ghost, He has a hard time beleiving that as many accolades he gets, he cant erase the Domination of rap by dearly Departed Christopher Wallace. he will never be better than Big, and Big will not spit one more rhyme
as for him and nas, two different styles, so i stopped comparing them long ago but jay caught a bad one rigth to the head, when Nas dropped ETHER

  • wmariah

I’m amazed on the level of stupidity of some commentators. Read it again people….she’s not being negative at all.

  • candace

Jay didn’t sell out, but he simply grew. He’s been in the game over 10 yrs, we can’t expect today’s music to sound like Reasonable Doubt. He also approaches the rap game like a business, and he’s been telling us that all along…how many songs does he have to make for us to understand that he’s about his money – by any means necessary. He is a household name, and if that was his goal then the brother should pat himself on the back for acheiving it.

  • Curtis

People are forgetting that Nas DID sell out, during the Nastradamus era, Oochie Wali Wali and when THAT didn’t work, then he tried to be more “conscious” again.

In fact, then he tried profit off call his album Ni**** and it’s unbelievable that people are forgetting this already.

Jay has been Jay. He has always been commercial and that to me is more real than anything that Nas has ever done.

And BTW, I feel that Nas is a more talented MC than him, always have. But he has always disappointed me because his work never caught up to his potential. At least Jay is consistent in pretty much everything he does.

MIA’s commments are DUMB for these reasons.

  • 614 Grind

We already know the story. Nas is 10x the emcee that Jay is, Ether showed that. But that don’t mean Jay isn’t a bigger artist. Jay doesn’t care about thought provoking music, he cares about sales (men lie, women lie, blah blah blah). The game needs both because Jay still is a guardian of the art form and he takes it very serious, as does Nas. They are the Yin and Yang of the game.

  • She said it.

I think Jay Z would still be a small fry if it were not for the tragic deaths of Biggie and Tupac.

  • Woooooooowwww

Jay-Z has always been about selling a product. The only difference is he jumped from selling dope, to selling his lyrics, to selling his brand. It’s in his nature so I don’t quite understand how folks can feign disappointment about him going commercial. Money is his primary motivator. Nas is a lyricist and isn’t as concerned with commercial success. Barring a few radio hits, he seems to be making music for the hip-hop heads. He’s marketing himself to a more specific audience, so of course he’s not going to have the monetary success as Jay-Z but no one can deny his talent.

  • loc n grow

THIS GIRL MADE NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER..GIRL WHO R U AGAIN?

  • She said it.

Jay Z’s voice is annoying. He sounds like a whining little boy. Tupac voice was inspirational each line was motivating. Biggie voice was round and boisterous. He had an ease of rapping. You had to know hip hop history to follow his lyrics. “Remember Rappin’ Duke. Da Ha. Da Ha. You never thought that hip hop would make it this far.” My sister asked me who was rappin’ duke. And I had to tell her that back then, old white news anchors who knew nothing about r&b, for some reason took it upon themselves to predict that rap was a fad and wouldn’t last. And they were serious about it like they were betting on sports or something. You could tell rap was a threat to the establishment back then. So Jay Z is doing what all rappers should be doing. I’m just not a fan of his style.

  • champhf

she never dissed jay-z in this artical and the truth as i see it:
Jay-z has always stated he makes music to seel the most records…

NAS Dopest mc still living but he is not going to sell like jay-z because he does not compromise his art.’

im actually listening to DISTANT RELATIVES not the bootleg…how many of you can say that?… bunch of critics…!!

  • Fab.

I see she’s trying as hard as possible to maintain her relevancy while she on maternity leave… first the GaGa diss, now this convo, smh

  • LS

@DeShawn – people like you are the problem. Every artist has his “ochie wally” songs – including Jay – “big pimping” “money over bi%ches” – the MAJOR difference between Nas and Jay is substance. Don’t base your opinion off of what makes it to the radio. I challenge you to pick up a Nas album: “Hip Hop is Dead” “Ni&&er” – and really LISTEN to it. What you will find is Nas ALWAYS has uplifting music regarding what he cares about most: ” The acquistion of knowledge for brown poeple and the need to see true change – for us to be empowered from the inside out. Now dont get me wrong I love Jay but he is completely different – his songs talk more about an individual struggle(s) and his rise above adversity. Nas is trying to get you to see who you are so you will never have to listen to a Jay song to be “empowered”. It will be there from within. There is a lot of thought that is put into most of Nas’ rhymes. I will not say that Jay is a sellout but I will say this: Nas is putting himself on the line by not sugar coating and by bringing this knowledge to light. THERE IS NO OTHER RAPPER OUT RIGHT NOW THAT DOES THIS IN THIS FASHION. He will not put out “bangers” bc those are for mindless people who just want to 2-step in the club. I can say that Jay has not done the same. How many Jay songs have you had to rewind bc it the words were sooooo powerful????? Nas on the other hand????? Think about it. Long story short M.I.A. has a valid point.

I’ll never understand why the comments of these ‘small fish’ garners any attention from the media. This chick couldn’t afford a doghouse on Jay Z’s property. When you reach his level of status and income, maybe I’ll be interested in what you have to say
    ______________________________________________

So because she’s not financially in the same bracket as Jay her comments shouldn’t be paid attention to? Such ignorance. What’s your financal status? I’m sure compared to this young lady, you’re the “small fish”

Nas: illuminati want my mind soul & my body….secret society tryna keep their eye on me. ENOUGH SAID! Nas’ objective is not to prophet off of any and everyone around him. He’s spiritual and a teacher….Jay is the total opposite. Nas makes songs like “I know I can” Jay makes songs like “girls girls girls girls”
The Jews that run the music biz don’t feel like minorities should be uplifted, therefore will stifle any positve message put out there that we can benefit from…..it’s deeper than rap.

Why does everybody get all hurt when people talk about Jay. Truth is Jay got big paper and when his business deals go belly up we just buy his next CD and go pay for him on tour. Kinda like Mayweather as long as he can get in the ring he will never be broke.

Look I aint hating on Jay but marrying Beyonce made him global because Bey can cross over into other demographics. Look Jay is smooth he is the only rapper who can go on Oprah. Look how she treated Luda.. We all know Luda is active in the black community we see him and we know NAS is dropping history to blacks but what has JAY given brothas the 40-40 club….Thinks about it.

Jay Z has souled the F U C K OUT! His soul is imprisoned by money. He honors on a daily basis at least 3 or 4 of the 7 deadly sins. In my opinion, he’s a psychopath. He’s no role model for youth or adults. His lyrics are garbage, his style is invisible and his message absolutely disgusts me. He’s no role model and doesn’t care to be. What a real freaking hell of a guy that Jay Z. You followers don’t get it. Screaming and yelling get money and praying to that so-called money god. It’s sad when a person will argue with you over something they KNOW is wrong. All in favor of money over righteousness raise your hand so I can spot you idiots and run in the other direction. Love over Money.

YEP YEP THE ONLY REASON Y NAS FELL OFF WAS BECAUSE HE TRIED TO LEAVE AND THEN HE FELL OFF AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN HE JOINED BACK WITH THE ILLMINUATI AND JAY-Z AND THATS WHY KELIS LEFT HIS AZZZ SHE BE SAYING DIS NIGGGA AINT GONNA SACRAFICE ME..

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

    Jay Z getting money.

What is M.I.A. and Nas doing with THEIR lives?

  • loveis

Dear Don, please read the whole thread b4 commenting! We’ve already established that both Nas and especially MIA got that bread! Expand ur mind, put the blunt down, and imagine that jayz’s d\ck isn’t in ur mouth. Now wouldn’t you say that MIA has a valid well-stated point!

  • The Bear

MIA has a good point. She is an intellectual (going to med school) and what she’s talking about is that Nas and JayZ make up an excellent case study of two rappers who took divergent path in their careers and lives.

Head to head Nas is the better rapper and he kept it “realer” but Jay is the better businessman. What Mia is saying is that the jury is still out and time will tell which one choose the better path. If I were a betting man I would put my money on Jayz at this point but life is such that you never can tell what the future will hold. Even Jay’s checks could stop coming in.

And then again should financial worth be the only measure of a man’s success?

  • Nikki Strong

@Matrix B, it’s people like you who will always be left behind because of your idea of what Hip Hop is. Nothing stays the same in life everything evolves. Where you in a bikini all your life or did you become that woman? As far as him coming back for the money, there were tons of male rappers that were out, but they were all wack and ODing with the autotune crap. FYI, a real artist can almost NEVER retire, I haven’t seen LL retire and I don’t want him to. I love Nas, however I think it’s unfortunate he didn’t become a better business man. Glad he stayed to his roots, but Kelis will take all that money for that child she just had. Hip Hop has become an American product and nothing is wrong with that. If you can own what America would never give us as a people why not work hard and achieve it? People hate big business but black people I’m not sure if you know but being the number one Consumer in America we make this country rich! I don’t want no parts of the hood and I’m from it. It’s depressing, people stay dying and on drugs. If that’s keeping it real, I’m real fake!

  • Matix B

Nikki Strong: I respect your opinion but I stand by mine. I used to be a fan and now I have “evolved” into liking other music other than HIP HOP!

  • The Bear

And in JayZ’ defense. I don’t think he flaunts his wealth at all. Lemme give you an example…
Jay drives around in a grey Jeep.

Could you imagine how Dame Dash would be acting if he had the type of money Jay has.

  • I don’t date Black Americans

Garbage like Jay-Z is one of the reasons why I don’t date black Americans.

M.I.A. may seem a bit off but I kind of like her she is ethnic and eccentric, perfect combination.

(in the voice people use when they see a baby or a puppy)
Ohh, the trolls are out… Yes they are! Ah yes they are! And they’ve gotten so plummmmp!

You know what… I think I’ll go to stormfront and post messages about why I don’t like white people… Yeah, yeah that makes sense! I hate them so much, I’ll make sure I go to the one place I’m sure to find them… The people… I hate… I think.

    Sigh.

    Fail.

I don’t know why John F. Kennedy let these kooks out of mental institutions…

  • Reality

Wow! You can see the intelligent ones use logic, while the ones uninformed use money as success. Firstly all three are rich, but two of the three educate though of at times. One of the educators is a female so pick the other wise MC :)

  • redbonekillbill

Another misleading title she did not say J “sold out” anyway two different artists with different goal sets. I wont say Jay sold out, I mean you can only talk about selling drugs and cakin’ girls for so long before its beyond old. Jay wants to be/is in the same company as Russel a multi-million dollar mogul, not just a rapper. Nas is a artist period. He’s not seeking the route of being a artist, a mogul a “Sinatra” two different people, with two different paths.

  • aaron

    Jay-Z = Opportunist.

He is a ruthless business man that jumps at a business opportunity – by any means necessary.

A simple, more recent example is his relationship with LeBron James.

The NBA team that Jay is a minority owner for, the Nets, won 9 out of 82 games this season. Yet he’s still gonna try and woe over LeBron James to play for that team this summer knowing D.AMN WELL LeBron doesnt stand a chance in hell of winning a championship there. But he doesnt care about LeBron as a friend, he just sees him as dollar signs.

    Some friend.

Thats just ONE simple example of him being a ruthless opportunist. Trust there are MANY MORE examples too, just ask dame, beans and others. And ill even go as far as to say that for the right amount of money – he would sacrifice beyonce too. But thats what happens when you start off eating syrup sandwiches everyday growin up in Marcy Projects – you gain a hunger to escape out of that lifestyle. And theres nothing wrong with that hustler mentality. But it becomes a problem when you make money your God like he has.

  • D.

The world is chanigng right now as we speak, and black people need to stop waitin on another blackman to come and be their savioir. Jay-Z is doing him, and people should do the same. In this day & time it’s more about money than anything. You’ll turn purple in the face trying to educate people who don’t want to educated. Nas is Nas, & Jay-Z is Jay-Z and Rap is a part of entertainment. That’s it.

  • ShaShaPretty

@Jao…couldn’t have said it better myself. Unfortunately in the music industry, especially hip-hop, u have to sell out or have major crossover appeal if your really tryna make any $. You can keep it real and kick knowledge and have all the the official street cred but that’s not gonna get you paid. Yea, you might sell out small arenas full of die hard hip-hop heads from the backwoods of your favorite city, but your not selling out Madison Square Garden…

  • NONO

For her to be so lame and small like some say. He sure did sample her song quick.

  • fool of a tooke!

She’s right & atleast she’s got the b@lls to say it. Although she did do a collabo with him a little while ago… so that’s done! Everyone else in the industry kisses his a$$ like Oprah so it’s nice to hear the truth about Camel.

  • that one girl

As far as rap goes I don’t think Jay-Z sold out. He still raps about sociological issues that still face the black community today he’s just garnered more commerical success than nas.

  • BeckaB

hey, I love NAS too tho….wont forget about him…..JAY, NAS, n BIGGIE.

  • BeckaB

    n M.I.A. is rich anyway..her BD is a billionaire

  • yezzur

Jay-z didn’t sell out all those other fools trying to be like him SOLD OUT. And thats the problem with Hip Hop now a days..its this keeing up with Jones.. what’s the formula for making a hit mentality that has killed this music. None of this stuff is orignal by design its suppose to sound like someone elses record so thats how you get the watered down stuff these labels are putting out.

  • BeckaB

y would u guys put my two little comments, n block my main one?? I didnt say anything wrong….is it wrong to have an opinion?? nope…i didnt think so

  • pk

Funny. We only say someone sold
Out when they make the dough beyond
    Most peoples imagination. Whatever
The case they are all in it for
    Money. This is two different
Franchises. There is a point. Yet
Who is really selling out. The
Rapper or the consumer? But when
I really think about it, who cares.
Does any of this really matter?
They will both tell us all to eat
A d!ck on the very record we
Purchase with our hard earned money

  • Mrs. Sophisticate

    @ Authentic

“Of course he dines with the president. He sold his soul to do so. $ doesn’t make a man. God knew he was going to sale out… that’s why he looks like that”

  • Long hair don’t care

I think jay z capitalised on his fame and was just a business man about it after all if you go from nothing to something you’re going to work hard to stay there, he was wise. Nas on the other hand stuck to what he was good at stayed true to his message and cultivated that skill of his instead, so I guess you could call jay z a sell out for not sticking to his initial intentions for entering the game in terms of being a rapper but who could blame him and at the end of the day it hasn’t ruined his integrity as a rapper he still talks about things that are relevant. They were always different, nas has always been about the struggle so he’d be a sellout to abandon that but jay z always shows progression in his work so hes stilll being real.

  • Lovly Olivia

All I will say is that I love M.I.A! This chick is beyond words…ya’ll really need to start feeling people like Santogold, K’naan, Sigor Ros, etc…I just love music from around the world…you guys really need to open your minds…this chick knows what she is talking about in all ways if we really started listening….I mean really listening…insteat of just hearing words…

  • MrZellz

I agree with her. While I think Jay Z is great at what he does, he did sell out and changed… I don’ t give a fu*k what anyone says..Nas has always been about knowledge and growth… He is always doing him regardless..but skip that.. IM PIssED TO LEARN THAT GUINEss BOOK OF WORLD RECORD has Emenim as the best rapper in the world!!! GET THE FUK OUT OF HERE…ARE YOU serious!! soon as a WHITE BOI GET A LIL REsPECT, HE THE GET THE FUK OUT OF HERE…white folks always trying to take over and claim some shit!

  • Kyshia

    That’s real real talk.

  • ECRAVE

mannn puh-leeze. someone tell m.i.a. to shut the F up please. what the F does this bish think she know? she always saying some random off the wall ish. like who really asked you bish? who is she or anyone to say that he sold out? ppl are just mad that a black man from the hood, is successful and doing things that by typical standards “shouldnt” be. he deserves his success and her comments are so irrelevant and sound realy jealous. nas and jayz are the big & tupac of the new generation and their both great. all this “keeping it real” bullSH– is just that, BULLSH–. ppl growup, wisen up and evolve. the fact that ppl are mad at the man’s progress is ridiculous. STFU m.i.a

  • gulla

    so what else is new?

  • SeanOne

Jay Z is a representation of what can be achieved through hard work, intelligence and making the right moves. At the end of the day, the “rapper” is at the bottom of the food chain (I do not mean this as any disrespect emcees). Jay Z got in at the bottom and learned the music industry game and attained status within the industry beyond being a signed artist (e.g. partial owner of the Nets, owner of 40/40 club chain, former CEO of Def Jam Records etc…). His career and business ventures gives hundreds of people jobs too!

It is easy to dismiss Jay Z as a sellout or becoming a sellout because of the mainstream appeal he has. But the reality is that he is a true role model to anyone that aspires to be something great. If he can go from Marcy to Hollywood (and back again) through grindin’ legitimately in the music industry and coming up in the ranks, then he should serve as an inspiration to anyone willing to strive to be great.

Let’s not forget that the level of success he has reached shows where other artists can hope to be. His success, directly or indirectly, motivates new artists in the culture of hip hop. His CAREER has been about knowledge and growth. Knowledge and growth shouldn’t be limited to lyrics.

…and seriously though…he remains relevant to this day and is still ill as f**k.

  • BLACK THOUGHT

    @SeanOne

WELL SAID, COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER!

  • down_to_earth_chick

I find it laughable that Nas is being held in such high regards by some people. He has not been true to his roots, need I remind you guys of Oochie Wally? KRS-1, Rakim, K’naan, these are the emcees that come to my mind as true hip-hop artists who, no matter what level of fame they have stay stay true to their art.

  • mindbully

I think this perpetual false dichotomy is tired and ignorant. You can appreciate, both Jay and Nas for what they’ve contributed to the world of Hip-Hop. They’re greats. Period. There’s no need to keep pitting them against one another.

  • Marvin

I have never been the type who knocks anybodies hustle. These two men are who they are. Nas is a purists, who is a very knowledgeable man and keeps it 100 from his perspective. His last album ni##a please was ahead of its time with not a lot of commercial success. I see Nas doing a lot of speaking engagements at colleges and different media outlets sometime in the future. Believe me people we need someone who speaks his mind and is a throwback from the 1960s, especially to our younger generation. We need to bridge the gap. Jay on the other hand is at another stage in his life and that stage is a business/man. Believe me he will never forget where he is from and I respect that. He is a born Capitalist, who’s hustle can’t be knocked. Now let’s all throw the diamonds in the sky and repect his vision.

  • thesaneone

she’s right and Jay-Z even knows this: “Id probbably be lyrically Talib Kweli, truthfully i wanna rhyme like Common Sense” Jay-Z is a business man first, artist second. Nas is the opposite but dont think for a second Nas aint about his paper too.

  • Justme

Where’s the so called knowledge within Oochie Wally?? Uhmm yeah, there is none and it completely degrades women. So, don’t get caught up in that bs about NAS. I’ve always liked him but a better example of knowledge would be Mos Def.
And what’s wrong with anyone doing their profession for $$? Do you go to work NOT to get paid, is that now why we work?

  • Vampire Bill Used 2 B Ready Set Go

MIA is so hot. I just love the way she looks.
