Does any of the old heads out there remember Dan Quayle, the lightweight who couldn’t spell potato? Well, that’s what political geeks around the web are calling that Shady McCain’s VP pick. When Palin was asked about the VP spot recently, she said the following:

But as for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does everyday? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.

It looks more like he was thinking about tapping that or exploiting the Hillary/Obama beef more than finding the best person for the country.

    ..

  • justmoi

    His choice seems quite transparent.

  • Vee-TGIF/ long weekend!!

This is bull-ish! What the f— does she knowabout all of the OTHER states, bein from Alaska???? I wouldnt be surprised if she & McCain had an uh… arrangement.

“Does any of the old heads out there remember Dan Quayle, the lightweight who couldn’t spell potato? Well, that’s what political geeks around the web are calling that Shady McCain’s VP pick.”

Dang!! Now y didn’t I make that comparison?

  • Mrs. D’angelo

I can’t believe he is trying to play on the Hillary supporters what a dirt doppler he is ugh!

  • Aziajs

    1. I agree, Justmoi, his choice is very transparent.

    2. I’m with her. What does the VP do? Nothing. If she is being honest she could probably accomplish more in her current position than being a token for McCain to exploit.

  • HF

My question is a simple 1:

If a MAN had Palin’s political resume, would Jurassic John have picked HIM 2 b his running mate?

    Let that simmer 4 a min…

  • jj

Obama can suck face with Biden’s wife, no prob. McCain chooses a female VP and he’s f-ing her? Yeah, that makes ALOT of sense. Morons

Okay Im kinda confused…how can McCain pick a female candidate when he needs to get support from Conservative Republicans…also, his VP is not guaranteed to clench the “Hilary” vote…is this not a conundrum?

    @ Nikki

Ostensibly he picked her because she’s a pro-life supporting, gun-toting, god-fearing, life-long member of the NRA who loves her country unquestionably.

Realistically, he desperately needed 2 court bitter Hillary supporters -even if it meant throwing his strongest argument against Obama under the bus -because he knows he’s going 2 otherwise lose.

I kinda expected this 2 b honest with u. Here’s another prediction: the McSame camp has 1 more card 2 play in desperation… the race-baiting card.

    Don’t think it won’t happen… just watch.

As a woman I am truly insulted by McCain’s VP selection. Women everywhere especially Hillary supporters should be OUTRAGED! McCain had FAR better candidates to choose from! As a woman I would LOVE to see another woman sworn in as President or VP… but not like this! The woman is a shameful token for the Republican Party’s political machine. And anyone who can’t see through this BLEEP’in sham of “change” should have their voting rights REVOKED for being mentally challenged!

    I am disgusted!

  • Sydney

I’m still a little incoherent from my late night (the Obama speech was phenomenal, just phenomenal, and it’s getting rave reviews). I’m going to start first with this, which I’m re-posting from another blog:

“‘With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished. I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America. And again, with all due respect to Richmond, Virginia, it’s smaller than Chula Vista, California; Aurora, Colorado; Mesa or Gilbert, Arizona; north Las Vegas or Henderson, Nevada. It’s not a big town.’

–Karl Rove, August 10, ‘Face the Nation’

Tim Kaine’s service as governor: three years

Sarah Palin’s service as governor: twenty months

    Population, Richmond, VA: 200,123

    Population, Wasilla, AK: 9,780″

  • Grippa

McInsane picks a woman who was mayor of a town of 8000 and less than 2 years as Governor of Alaska with 700 thousand people. She is an NRA member, hunter, fisherwoman, pro-life, pro-oil companies, under investigation for corruption,no experience on the federal stage. WTF !!! McInsane is truly senile.

    Picture him winning the presidency.

McInsane wins this election ,starts a war with Russia and Iran while V.P. Palin is fascinated by all the fancy cars in the big city.

    Obama/Biden 08 or DIE !!!

  • Shavon Denise

LOL!! OMG their backs are really agaisnt the wall and its obvious that they are willing to do anything to win. All the reporters last night said that this woman was not any where near qualified like the other candidates. If people fall for this! If those people who are for Hillary vote for McCain is now solidified because of this VP pick, than its nothing BUT a race thing.

  • Sydney

Then let’s review some details about Gov. Palin. First, she happens to be under an ethics investigation in Alaska. Then there’s the little matter of her lack of experience, which becomes a major matter when you consider McCain’s age (he turns 72 today) and his health. Is a woman who is a first-term governor and was the major of a small Alaskan town really qualified to be president of this nation?

Even Texas Gov. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a prominent Republican, admitted to CNN that she knows little about Palin. This choice is a smack in the face to those who admire and respect Hillary and others like her who champion the causes of women.

More about the ethics probe: “An issue for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that is already drawing attention in the opening moments of her debut as the Republican vice presidential pick is an ongoing state ethics probe that was launched just a few weeks ago. An independent investigator appointed by a panel of state legislators earlier this month is looking into whether Mrs. Palin dismissed a top law enforcement official in her administration because he failed to fire a state trooper, Mike Wooten, who went through a messy divorce with Mrs. Palin’s sister. The investigation follows on the heels of Mrs. Palin’s abrupt decision in mid-July to dismiss Walt Monegan, her Public Safety Commissioner. Mrs. Palin said she wanted to take the department in a different direction, but questions emerged after Mr. Monegan said he felt pressured to fire Mr. Wooten.”

  • http://deleted BadNewsBrown

i am sorry to say this does not look good.

the conservatives that hate mccain now have an easy reason to vote for him. the fact that Barack did not choose a woman (or Richardson, the LatinAmerican choice) gave mccain an easy choice here.

She got real conservative street cred, and she’s a former beauty queen. That corruption case? wait till u hear the details. She tried to get her ex bro-in-law fired after he tasered his own 11 yo son. and he was only susupended-still working (a cop)

and she’s a former beauty queen oh wait alread said that.

last nights speech gave me a little hope (i’ve had a bed feeling for a while now) but now? shiiiiiiit….

Whats up NIKKI U have a great weekend! I’m cutting down on the posting time to make that cheeese!

  • tscombo

It was a smart move, seriously. She is very conservative and republicans that weren’t supportive of McCain will like this alot. She is a succesful woman, married, 5 kids (one going to Iraq), and an outsider of Washington. Not to mention being easy on the eyes and few years younger than Obama. It’s completely out of left field.

If the other side keeps calling her a ‘ho’ it won’t help get the female vote.

  • ugottalisen

You do realize 2012 is almost upon us, right? The end of the world and all that. Just happens to be an election year too. Think about it… LOL. But seriously she’s really hot looking if that is her. She might even sway some young voters to vote Republican just to see that piece of ass on the news all day.

Unfortunately, it was shrewd. It is a direct rebuttal to Obama’s claim that a McCain administration will be a third Bush term. He (McCain) clearly has a lot of guts.

Let’s see how she stands up over the next 60 days.

And no, calling her a “ho” is not in the spirit of the Obama candidacy.

  • me

Funny how barack is now bringing up her experience.. like the pot calling the kettle black.. no that’s not meant to offend..

Her 730 days leading an actual state is a bunch more than barry’s 177 days doing nothing, especially voting, in the senate. She is more qualified than barry to be president.

  • Certain

Hmmm. Seems McCain thought Hilary was going to get the nod and this was his counter. But I tell you, I think this my hurt the Dems. I mean, there are going to be a lot of women that were upset about the whole primary race and then upset that Hilary didn’t get the VP nod. I guess I should say it could be detrimental. I don’t know if the people that were upset about Hilary not getting the nod will be upset enough to vote for the Republican ticket.

  • nicaw

I’m not going to discount her political record. Evidently she has a strong following in Alaska and that’s great. It’s a smart and very strategic move for the Republican party to sway the votes of Hillary Clinton supporters who are on the fence.

Plus the Republicans needed to set a precedence in history as well. She is the first woman on the Republican national ticket.

  • Sydney

The decision may play well with conservatives, and even with some Clinton supporters who want to see a woman have a shot at the White House, but for anyone who takes the causes of women seriously, reproductive rights being among them, it’s a slap in the face. Dee Dee Myers called Palin the “Double-X Dan Quayle” in a commentary today on vanityfair(dot)com.

She may be “hot,” but can she be president?

McCain wanted to steal the thunder from Obama and make history himself, but I hope people will see through this as a deliberate ploy to pander to women voters, and not a very good one at that. There are much more impressive Republican women whom McCain could have picked.

This is from Catherine A. (Kiki) McLean, Senior adviser to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and a principal with the Dewey Square Group: “Women don’t vote for women because they are women. Women have high expectations — and have always had to meet them. The McCain campaign should not assume that adding Sarah Palin to its ticket will attract female voters in margins large enough to turn the Obama tide. In fact, this choice might be yet another example that he is out of touch.”

Well I been in the White chat rooms all morning and the Democarts see Brack winning for real by a land slide after this news . The very few Hiliary supporters that were in the Chat room., said off the back that MCcain moved pushed them more to vote Barck. They see McCAIN MOVE AS A insult to Hiliary in some many ways. People is taking into considerations that if Mccain gets sick we are leaving our country in the hands of a 1yr experience Governer !! I see this as a gain for Barack ! People want Hiliary not a knock-off-verison. Not to add Biden is going to take it too her during the live Debate. She has nothing to go off! Also if you seen her speech this morning she looks very nervous about something I just couldn’t put my finger on it!She knows she isn’t ready for that tyoe of position !!

I agree — the misogynistic name-calling isn’t necessary. I may not agree with some of Gov. Palin’s positions, but she’s certaintly not a “h*.”

Here’s the official statement from the Obama-Biden campaign on Gov. Palin, by the way: “We send our congratulations to Governor Sarah Palin and her family on her designation as the republican nominee for Vice President. It is yet another encouraging sign that old barriers are falling in our politics. While we obviously have differences over how best to lead this country forward Governor Palin is an admirable person and will add a compelling new voice to this campaign,” said Senator Barack Obama and Senator Joe Biden.

I definitely agree that this seems to exploit the Obama/Hillary beef and seems intended to entice Hillary’s voting base. It was shrewd for sure but that is not what we need right now. Put an “X” in all that applies 2 this woman (that we know of).

[X] Less experience in government than Barack Obama

    [X] Corruption/Possible misuse of power

[X] Likelihood of wide-eyed fascination of this thing called “civilization” while in office.

hanibal. U are hilarious! Are u getting worked up over sarah? lmaooooooooooooooooo

    anyway

this is what I have to say:

It is called a gimmick. McCain is deeply worried about how well Obama is doing and after such a great convention, he decided that he needed a little trick to drum up some fake publicity for himself.

Does he really think that Hillary supporters (women who actually care about other women and their RIGHTS) would be so foolish and idiotic and just jump on his bandwagon now because he picked a woman! He is still the same jack*ss who does not care about the economy, womens rights, our global standing, the environment, etc, etc, etc…………

She is the exact OPPOSITE of Hillary and any woman would be a fool if they switched sides because he picked a Nazi pro-life, anti-climate, pro-oil glorified beauty queen as his running mate!

Nice try McCain. We don’t need the female version of yourself.

And what a joke that he says that Obama has no experience! Yes, I would feel so secure with this woman who has no experience running our country if he should just drop dead (a real possibility at his age) I am glad those years in the local PTA will come in handy, and walking down the beauty queen stage, when she needs to deal with global leaders.

McCain questions Obama’s judgement and he turns around an chooses a person so amazingly unqualified to be his president, and possible commander in chief of the most powerful country in the world……..he is more senile, desperate, and out of the touch then I thought.

Women are not so stupid that all the look at is the gender of the party running!

“Oh, look, a woman VP!! Goody, Goody!!! I am now voting for McCain and going against everything I believe in!”

  • Sydney

    @Nita

“There’s already youtube videos out of McCain checking out Palin’s ass.”

Wow, really? Not surprising, unfortunately. I think Cindy should watch her back — McCain was still married when they started dating, no? Once a philanderer, always a philanderer. . .

Also, like you, I’m also wondering if she was vetted because I read today that her own press secretary didn’t know she was in the running until she received an early morning call today. Interesting. . .and some people are peeved that Pawlenty and Romney served as decoys. But I have to give it to McCain — I think this threw a LOT of people off guard and, once again, put the Obama camp in the defensive position of having to respond quickly. This is true politics, and this campaign is historic in so many ways.

    @HF

I agree that referring to Gov. Palin by that offensive term is definitely not in the spirit of the Obama-Biden campaign. We can do better.

  • USC Alum

I can see how selecting Ms. Palin as VP can have any added value to the republican ticket. Not a good move at all! Just my .02 cents

  • Sydney

Here’s some info from Politico on how McCain chose Palin:

John McCain first met Governor Sarah Palin at the National Governors Association meeting in Washington in February of 2008 and came away extraordinarily impressed. John McCain followed her career and admired her tenacity and her many accomplishments. She was scheduled for a high profile speaking role at our convention and included in the VP selection process because of his admiration for her strong reform credentials. Last Sunday, Governor Palin and John McCain had a conversation over the phone. Governor Palin was at the Alaska State Fair, and John McCain was at his home at Phoenix. Previously, Rick Davis, John McCain’s campaign manager, had also been in regular contact with the Governor as part of the on-going selection process. This past week, Governor Palin arrived with Kris Perry in Flagstaff, Arizona, on Wednesday evening. Upon arrival, Governor Palin and her longtime aide Kris Perry met with Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter of the McCain campaign at Mr. Bob Delgado’s home in Flagstaff. Mr. Delgado is the CEO of the Hensley corporation, which is Mrs. Cindy McCain’s family business. On Thursday morning, Governor Palin and staff were joined by Mrs. Cindy McCain and later joined by John McCain at the McCain family home in Sedona, Arizona. At approximately 11:00 a.m. Thursday August 28, 2008, John McCain formally invited Governor Sarah Palin to join the Republican ticket as the vice presidential nominee on the deck of the McCain family home.

  • always knew

McCain’s answer to Hillary, electing a woman, since she could not get nominated, so he can get her voters, to support him…Smart move, I dk know if it’ll work, but smart move…Another thing, if he says “Barack is not ready to lead because of his age and experience, isn’t this contradicing his own argument, by having a vp basically with the same issues….Just food for thought…

  • http://youtube.com/fifitrooper ( The Delicious♥♥♥♥♥) Ms. Sugar Walls

If McCain respects and admires women so much, then why has he engaged in extramarital affairs? Why does he cite the breakup of his first marriage as his greatest failure? Furthermore, why won’t he allow a woman to make her own choice as to what she decides to do with her body?

and would of been better if he would of chose Condalezza rice?

  • Nita

@Sydney, yep. He got caught. It’s funny as hell, to me, because his eyes keep going down, and then they pop back up! finally, the camera moves so that it only focuses on Palin’s face.

    But damn, McCain was blatant.

But the biggest thing that got me is that he’s fiddling with his ring finger of his left hand!

  • http://youtube.com/fifitrooper ( The Delicious♥♥♥♥♥) Ms. Sugar Walls

    I doubt it tony

Btw: obama is leading in the polls

  • Sydney

    @Nita

I think Biden will have to be careful about how he “disarms” Palin. Biden can be an attack dog, but if he goes after Palin in a certain manner, it could make him look like a bully in the eyes of women who believe this campaign has been tinged with sexism all along. It’s going to be a balancing act. All of this factored into McCain’s decision to choose her. Don’t forget, he and Biden are close friends, and he knows Biden’s debating style. He chose someone who will force Biden to think carefully about his words and arguments.

  • Sydney

    @Nita

*shaking my hand* He’s something else, isn’t he? I’m still trying to verify the “c*nt* comment he reportedly made against Cindy a while ago. He’s known for his bad temper.

On a side note, did you hear that Cindy’s half-sister has said that she’s supporting Obama?

    @Ms. Sugar Walls

If Condi had been picked, I think that would have caused an even bigger quagmire for both women and black voters. She can certainly be tied to Bush and his policies, but she also has a proven record of experience and knowledge. There are other well-qualified Republican women as well.

  • Nita

@ Sydney, girl, that’s what I’ve been saying all morning, since the Palin news broke, about how careful Biden has to be when it comes to debating Palin. You make me feel not so alone.

The Cunt remark may or may not be real. It depends on whether or not Cliff Schecter was telling the truth, or if he pulled a Jerome Corsi (the asshole who wrote misrepresentations about Obama and his family) on McCain. Wonkette writes that, according to Cliff Schecter in his book, ‘The Real McCain’, back in 1992, the following incident occurred:

” Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain’s intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt.” McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days. “

  • Nita

Sugar Walls, they’re really trying to take the bounce away from Obama.

It’s all gonna come down to the debates. Pretty only goes so far when it comes to the presidency. As long as McCain doesn’t cheat like he did at Saddleback,…… I’m just going to leave it to God, and vote, and make sure everybody I know votes.

  • Sydney

    @Nita

Thanks for that excerpt — I read that recently, and I really don’t want to believe it’s true because it’s just so disgustingly ugly. I think anger may be McCain’s Achilles heel.

On the subject of Palin, it’s so interesting to me that he made the announcement, hours after Obama’s monumental speech and on the third anniversary of Katrina (I saw a statement today from Obama, by the way, but I haven’t seen one from McCain yet — again, no surprise there). I thought he went ballistic during Obama’s overseas trip recently when he put out the Paris Hilton ad and attacked all the attention he was getting. Now this comes out the day after Obama spoke before more than 80,000 people in a beautiful display of unity and purpose. It’s like he couldn’t let him have the spotlight, lol. This morning was all about Obama, and now it’s all about Palin.

    Just some observations. . .

Not a Gimmick or a joke. First to Sydney. The selection is made today 1) because it MC Cain’s birthday & 2) it grabs the media that has been stuck all week in Denver on 3 day holliday weekend. She is non beltway person, a real change maker. As to you Hillary folk, she earned her offices. Hillary instead has rode Bill’s coat tails for 25 years. Palin shures up the GOP base that was luke warm to McCain. She Appeals exactly to the voters Obama has been losing for 5 months. She has the plusses of a Romney, without the baggage. It also plays to the Domestic affairs side of the ticket. Mc Cain’s other choices did not do that.

This is the biggest joke in American history, seriously. This woman has 5 kids, 4 are most likely living at home, living the Suburban Family life, the one that is always the blueprint for t.v. She’s living in Alaska, a state that really has no ties to the U.S. accept for being apart of the Union.

Why would she want to leave the comfort of Alaska for what she will face dealing with those sharks in Washington? They won’t respect her, they won’t like her, and they will disrespect her to her face. Really, when the ol’ boys in Washington are having their power meetings , getting deals made, back talking, and cutting up like men, how will she survive in that environment. She can be conservative and have stauch republican beliefs, but it won’t mean jack because they won’t listen to her, nor respect her. They will treat her like an outsider. I feel sorry for her, why would she want to put her husband a man that works on the oil rigs or something through that? And that environment isn’t for the weak, and listening to her speech and reading her non-existent meaning of what a VP is, the ol boys club will have a field day. The Beauty pageant days are over, she needs to be prepared for men to hate her for leaving her children at home , especially one that isn’t well, Obama and Biden can just sit back and watch her own party destroy her. Alaskan politics isn’t real politics, she just entered into a warzone, and having a Elisabeth Haselback personality, won’t cut it.

BTW: as a woman I’m giving Biden my 100% support to spank that booty during the debates. Please.

She’s woman enough to play a man’s game, she’s woman enough to take the spanking.

  • Supasuzi

It is a shame when other women jump on the bandwagon of hating another woman because she is a woman. Down grading her by saying she must be sleeping with the man above her or calling her a ho…..Have a real reason to put people down other than trying to lift yourself up….

McCain is not the youngest man around. I do NOT think I would want this woman to run the country in the event of his unfortunate demise. They pick at Obama’s experience? Pahleaaazzeeee.

Oh, I understand completely whey McCain chose Palin, and a campaign ploy, it was brilliant — the afterglow of Obama’s speech was quickly overshadowed by the buzz about this largely unknown governor of Alaska. But although Palin would make history if she and McCain win the election, I believe it would also put our nation at great risk. We are in a time of great crisis — we are at war, the economy is steadily deteriorating, and many people are suffering. McCain turned 72 yesterday, has had cancer, and his health is a serious concern. Should the worst happen, Palin, a first-term governor with no observable foreign policy experience, would be president. She is, as Dee Dee Myers described yesterday, the “X-Chromosome Dan Quayle.” Can we, in this time of great domestic/international turmoil, afford to take such a gamble?

Also, I’m an Obama supporter, but I’ve been an admirer of Hillary for years, and, yes, I see this choice as an insult for everything she stands for. This woman even opposes the choice of abortion for women who have been raped or are the victims of incest. Her views run directly counter to many of Hillary’s positions. Unlike what McCain and other Republicans believe, it takes more than putting someone with breasts on the ticket to garner women’s votes. Most of us are smarter than that. I wouldn’t vote for an African American I thought wasn’t qualified for the job, and I certainly won’t vote for a woman whom I believe is unprepared to lead this nation.

Sarah Palin is no Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Exactly, let’s look at the facts.

McCain released that congratulations commercial to Obama to draw attention to the fact that he is black. (I think Obama should release a commercial wishing McCain Happy Birthday).

McCain picks Palin to pander to Hillary Supporters. Let the chunk yard dog out; Let Hillary go after McCain for this choice.

If Obama and Biden take the bait it will get ugly.

I love Obama, but his style is non confrontational and republicans are desperate.

He can’t get bogged down with the VP choice; He has to keep hitting McCain.

McCain and Rove picked Palin on Thursday night when Obama gave that electrifying speech. Desperate, but they figure at the very least it puts Obama in a quagmire if he attacks her experience or if Biden goes after her to hard they will be called sexist and

    Elitist.

McCain has proven he will do anything to get elected by picking Palin, he’s almost surely going to die before a second term and this is who he picks to take his place?

I can’t wait until November 4th so I can celebrate this victory.

When the economy is the biggest concern with the american public why not pick Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, instead of Mitt Romney, a man who has bailed 4 major companies out of Bankrupcy? Stupid, stupid move on McCain’s part. He just handed the election to Obama.

it is being alleged that Sarah Palin “faked” the pregnancy of her last child, a baby born with Down’s Syndrome. The claim is that it was her teenaged daughter’s child, not hers

  • Sydney

There are also reports that McCain met Palin ONCE before picking her as his vp candidate this week. And there’s speculation about how well she was vetted. I also read about the pregnancy rumor online, but I haven’t been able to find any solid confirmation. I think more will come out soon on Palin, and this may be the worst political misstep McCain has ever made. But who knows? After all, this is the same nation that elected Dubya not once, but twice. Anything’s possible. We have two months and there’s still much work to be done.

And am I the only one who finds it wildly ironic that on the even of the GOP convention in the Twin Cities, Hurricane Gustav. which is now a Category 4, is predicted to hit the Gulf Coast by early next week? People are evacuating New Orleans today. It could be very serious and the region has not rebounded yet from Katrina. People’s lives are still in disarray from three years ago.

  • Sydney

Even journalists in Alaska are second-guessing the selection of Palin as a vp candidate:

A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson, even did an online chat with the Washington Post, in which he revealed that Palin’s approval rating in the state was not the much-touted 80%, but 65% and sinking — and that among journalists who followed her it might be in the “teens.” He added: “I have a hard time seeing how her qualifications stack up against the duties and responsibilities of being president…. I expect her to stick with simple truths. When asked about continued American troop presence in Iraq, she said she knows only one thing about that (I paraphrase): no one has attacked the American homeland since George Bush took the war to Iraq.”

  • Sydney

    @Ms. Sugar Walls

Have you read yesterday’s People magazine interview with her? It’s frightening. If elected, McCain would be the oldest first-term president in history, if I’m not mistaken.

Given her young age and relatively short resume, why is she any more ready to be president than Sen. Barack Obama?

JOHN: I don’t think it’s a short resume. She first ran for office back in 1992. I don’t know what Senator Obama was doing then, but the first time she ran was 1992. That’s 16 years. I think that’s a pretty, pretty event-filled and record-filled resume.

SARAH: And I haven’t had too many years other than that to fill up yet.

    JOHN: There you go.

Do you feel ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

SARAH: Absolutely. Yup, yup. Especially with a good team around us.

  • STEFANY

Who is Sarah Palin? Here’s some basic background:

She was elected Alaska ‘s governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2

She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4

She’s doesn’t think humans are the cause of climate change.5

She’s solidly in line with John McCain’s “Big Oil first” energy policy. She’s pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won’t be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6

How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.

  • Imoonah

John McCain looked high and low for someone to fit a profile that his team had in mind 1) someone to be his yes person 2) white female with kids 3) some political background

She does not have to have experience which is very clear just an image on his ticket… One of her sons is in the army also a plus he believes

John wants Hilary’s votes… anything to help get him elected into the office. This is not about the best man/women for the job it is very clear to anyone with some sense that it is about positioning himself before the election. It will probably work with some of the narrow minded people that stood behind Hilary but won’t stand behind Barack simply because he is Black.

  • Sydney

    From Politico:

We knew McCain is a politician who relishes improvisation, and likes to go with his gut. But it is remarkable that someone who has repeatedly emphasized experience in this campaign named an inexperienced governor he barely knew to be his No. 2. Whatever you think of the pick, here are six things it tells us about McCain:

    1. He’s desperate. Let’s stop pretending this race is as close as national polling suggests. The truth is McCain is essentially tied or trailing in every swing state that matters — and too close for comfort in several states like Indiana and Montana the GOP usually wins pretty easily in presidential races. On top of that, voters seem very inclined to elect Democrats in general this election — and very sick of the Bush years.

McCain could easily lose in an electoral landslide. That is the private view of Democrats and Republicans alike.

McCain’s pick shows he is not pretending. Politicians, even “mavericks” like McCain, play it safe when they think they are winning — or see an easy path to winning. They roll the dice only when they know that the risks of conventionality are greater than the risks of boldness.

The Republican brand is a mess. McCain is reasonably concluding that it won’t work to replicate George W. Bush and Karl Rove’s electoral formula, based around national security and a big advantage among Y chromosomes, from 2004.

  • p1tey1

This will either go down as one of the biggest blunders in political history, or a brilliant move on McCain’s part. Only time will tell. But my support of Barack Obama and Joe Biden is UNWAVERING!

  • Somer

Behind the scenes of the Republican party are just as split as the Dems were earlier this week. They are not happy. The GOP is shaking their heads and they say Mitt Romeny is furious. I can’t wait to see the acting job done next week at their convention. Mitt got passed over for a beauty queen with a journalism degree. That is basically the most simple degree given out.

Goes back to what Chris Rock said, “A white man with a C-average can be president of the U.S.” The Obamas spend day one of the convention explaining why they were successful but not elitist. I have never in history heard of such nonsense. No other presidential nominee in history had to do that. Not even John Kerry & his rich ass wife. The GOP respected the Kerry’s wealth but would NOT respect the Obama’s ivy league education.

    ====================

I agree with Sydney’s post. John McCain’s pick of Palin is his version of a “Hail Mary pass.” Picking Palin gives him the opportunity to get more of his base energized instead of staying home on election day. He was going to get a percentage of Hillary voters regardless of who he picked, but I don’t think he increased the numbers. Whether you like HRC or not, she is a brilliant, accomplished woman.

I don’t know Sarah Palin, but running the state of Alaska is no where near the complexity of being a senator from New York or a mayor from a large city like Los Angeles, Chicago, or Houston. Managing resources supporting 700,000 citizens is a tad different than managing the resources supporting 301 million citizens. I am not even factoring the diversity of US citizens, Congress, and international politics.

On March 5th, 2008 Alaska”s Republican Governor, Sarah Palin, announced to the media that she was 7 months pregnant with her 5th child. She is currently 44.

Palin”s daughter Bristol is 16 and attends an Anchorage high school. Students who have attended class with her report that she has been out of school for months, claiming a prolonged case of mono.

Palin does not appear pregnant in any recent photographs. The announcement came as quite a shock to people who had worked closely with her, and have been quoted as saying that she did not appear pregnant whatsoever during the prior 7 months.

And there”s more ” check out the photo above taken with Palin”s daughter having a bulge in her stomach.

And even more. Since these rumors have begun circulating, the Alaska Department of State has taken down ALL PHOTOS of the governor and her family from the state”s website.

I’m not knocking the lady for trying to protect her daughter. But if you have that kind of scandal in your recent past, you really have no business running for vice president. If that”s what she wanted to do, she could have done like Janet and Rebe and just stayed out of the limelight for a minute

The MSM/Press is chicken to report this, this reporter has learned that The National Enquirer is all over this one. Expect the scandal to get bigger

Palin has two sons (Track, 19; and Trig, four months) and three daughters (Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7) [Ages as of August 2008].[91]

“She gave birth to Trig on April 18, 2008, while in office as governor, and returned to the office three days afterward.[92][26] The baby, as prenatal genetic testing had shown, has Down syndrome;[93]”

The National Enquirer is all over the Palin pregnancy rumor? The same National Enquirer that broke the John Edwards scandal? Wow. . .

OK, so we have an ex-beauty pageant runner-up for vp and we have a hurricane that could be worse than Katrina approaching the Gulf Coast this minute while the GOP gets ready to open its convention tomorrow. The Republicans are really making a name for themselves — they truly are out-of-touch.

As Hillary said, No Way, No How, No McCain.

More on Gustav. Please keep the people of the Gulf Coast in your thoughts and prayers:

Warning that Hurricane Gustav is the “mother of all storms,” Mayor Ray Nagin late Saturday ordered a mandatory evacuation of the West Bank of New Orleans for 8 a.m. Sunday and the east bank for noon.

“We want 100 percent evacuation,” Nagin said. “It has the potential to impact every area of this metropolitan area.”

Katrina had a footprint of about 400 miles, he said. Gustav is about 900 miles and growing, Nagin said.

“This is worse than a Betsy, worse than a Katrina,” he said.

  • Sydney

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President George W. Bush will not likely go to the Republican National Convention on Monday because Hurricane Gustav is expected to strike Louisiana that day, the White House said on Sunday.

This should give serious pause to anyone who supports the right of women to choose. The Palin has energized conservatives on the Far, Far Right. If McCain wins, the possibility that Roe v. Wade will be overturned is very real:

“I’ve talked to two prominent social conservative leaders in the past 24 hours who told me they had previously not planned to attend the convention, but were now coming to Minneapolis after the Palin pick,” wrote Ralph Reed, a Christian conservative leader who has tangled with McCain, in an email. “One scrambled to find a hotel room and is coming tomorrow; the other re-arranged his schedule and is flying in Wednesday. I got a call this afternoon from an evangelical business leader who told me he was contacting the McCain campaign and offering to host a fundraiser with his friends for McCain (sans the candidate) before the Thursday deadline [when McCain shifts to the public financing system]. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a veep pick energize the grassroots like this.”

Rush Limbaugh, who exulted on the air this week, summed up the response he’s gotten from his loyal listeners: “Home f***ing run.”

“Palin=Guns, Babies, Jesus,” he wrote in an email. “Contrast that to Obama’s bitter clingers. Obama just lost blue-collar, white Democratic voters in Pennsylvania and other states.”

  • Suckrack Yomama

Obama is just an arrogant dick who thought he was “qualified enough” to run for President after 143 days in Washington. But like Hillary said, “Senator McCain has 25 years of experience with foreign policy, and Barack Obama had a speech he gave in 2006.”

Believe it or not, I was actually pulling for McCain to ask Hillary to be his VP running mate. Although I disagree with her on many issues, she is intelligent enough to reposition herself to the center…and experienced enough to lead as the President.

Obama? He is just wise in his own eyes…and he is still a very arrogant dick.
