Little Abby Sunderland Feared Lost At Sea Trying To Be Youngest To Ever Sail Around World: All Points Bulletin!!

Abby Sunderland may have just set the country on fire by being lost at sea. We all know how important it is for an AMERICAN like her to go missing. The 16-yr old is trying to become the youngest to ever sail around the world:

TV satellite trucks were beginning to gather outside the modest Thousand Oaks home…… where teen sailor Abby Sunderland lives with her parents. Occasionally, reporters would knock on the front door of the home covered with ivy and geranium. But no one answered.

Students from nearby Thousand Oaks high school walked down the street wondering why news trucks were here. Gage Guzman, 17, said he hoped that Abby would be found safe. “She’s younger than me and she’s sailing around the world, and by herself, that’s even crazier,” he said. “She’s brave, I don’t even go into the ocean by myself.”

Guzman’s younger brother, Shawn, 15, said he didn’t think her attempt to sail around the world was reckless. “If it’s her dream to sail, and she wants to follow her dream, that’s courageous. “

Sunderland, out of necessity, abandoned her quest to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, nonstop and unassisted. However, the 16-year-old was continuing her mission to become the youngest person to sail around the world.

Sailing experts said the Southern Indian Ocean where Sunderland was sailing when she apparently signaled emergency beacon locating devices on Thursday is known to be a difficult challenge. Charlie Nobles, executive director of the American Sailing Assn., said that winter storms in the Southern Hemisphere are fast approaching, creating rough waves that can reach dozens of feet high. He also said that there are fewer hours of light during the day, which can make navigating the waters difficult.

“There’s just not a lot of land in that part of the world,” Nobles said. “You have to follow certain patterns because you need the trade winds. Where she is right now is in between Australia and South Africa.”

Sailors had criticized Sunderland for leaving so late in the year for her journey. She departed from Marina del Rey on Jan. 23, later than she had wanted to because of equipment issues. She also had to make a stop in Mexico to make repairs, which wasted precious time before the approaching winter southern storms.

Nobles said that sailing around Cape Horn between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula was speculated to be Sunderland’s greatest challenge. But she rounded the cape in April without many issues, he said.

“A lot of people talk about the Horn because that’s what you hear about in National Geographic specials,” Nobles said. “But it wasn’t that big of a deal, fortunately, for her.”

Shortly after setting sail, Sunderland abandoned her quest to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, without any stops or assistance.

“I don’t know enough facts to know whether this is something she necessarily could have avoided or if it was a bad decision,” Nobles said. “My hope was that if she was at a certain point in her journey, she would say, ‘I’m less concerned about a record than to try to make it through safely.’ “

Abby Sunderland’s brother, Zac, last year completed his solo sail around the world at age 17.

Sunderland’s latest entry on her blog Wednesday described hitting rough weather and winds at 45 knots. “Wild Eyes was great through everything, but after a day with over 50 knots at times, I had quite a bit of work to do,” she wrote about her vessel.

Her parents have said in news reports that they had persuaded Abby to get to the nearest port in the event that dangerous conditions arose.

Someone better get Obama on the phone…

  • sholla21

Her parents must be kicking themselves for allowing her to “follow her dreams”…

Abby’s Boat will Not Sink.. she has all The Supplies she needs to Wait for her Rescue.. If she got on the Life Suites.. She will be fine.. Airplanes Go to look at Daylight

    Poor little cracker. :(

  • Just Wondering

First her brother sailed around the world alone at 17 and now she is trying it at 16 to be the youngest person to sail alone around the world. Now that she is lost, the family wants the state department to mount a rescue. I wonder if the family consulted the state department before allowing their daughter to risk such a dangerous feat. Just saying!

Rich or poor black or white, young or old, a person is lost at sea. Say a prayer.

  • Nicole

I hope she lives to tell her story and with that being said ….. I feel the same about this girl as I do with astronauts.. She put herself in that situation and decided to take the risk so I have little sympathy for her; it goes with the territory.
Her parents are fukin idiots for even allowing her to do this stupid shyte. They possibly lost their daughter so she could say she was the “FIRST” at something??? I wonder if it was worth it! BTW this is NOT a racial issue come on conspiracy sister!!

  • chaka1

Who in their right mind would allow their 16 year old daughter to sail around the world by herself. ARE YOU FUDGING KIDDING ME???

  • Lena

This is nothing to polk fun of. I hope she’s ok. She has an unsinkable boat….however, titanic was made to not sink. I hope for her safe return.

  • R_U_Trying_To_Prove_Her_Right?

In 1996, some irresponsible dad was allowing his 7 YEAR OLD to fly a plane across country, and they both died in a crash (Jessica Dubroff).

Sailing across open sea is a challenge for EXPERIENCED sailors, with excellent navigation and other equipment, and this girl was not OLD enough to qualify as an “experienced sailor”.

Maybe the ADULTS in these stunts ought to ACT like adults.

  • The Bear

I would love to sail around the world one day.

Damn when I was 16 I couldn’t even go to the mall alone. Don’t know what kind of boat she’s on, but what about food?

  • Kiki2010

No this isn’t a black or white issue, but it is true that a majority of the black youths that go missing don’t get reported about. I love how people who aren’t minorities act like rascism doesn’t exist.

We have really got to put an end to children risking life and limb to break a sports record… as a society and not just jump on the band-wagon when these stunts go wrong. I don’t know if it started with the Tiger Woods story or what but kids are getting younger and younger and vying for more and more aggressive sports titles and records each day. I just heard about the “youngest to climb Mt. Everest,” the “baby bull fighter,” and now this all in the span of one week! Our children are becoming our gladiators for Godssake! How are we standing for this?

This is a perfect example of the aimless/reckless ambition of average people today. What was the point of this? To be FAMOUS. That’s it. EVERYBODY wants to be a celebrity now. For nothing. Whether they have talent or not. Let’s not even talk about the idiocy happening in the music world. Reality shows have obese people dancing(mostly making fools of themselves), and trying to lose weight on TV. Why? To be FAMOUS. On America’s Got Talent the other night, a guy set his d*ck on fire. Why? To be FAMOUS. This young girl had NO BUSINESS sailing around the world alone. Some parents won’t let their 16 y.o. drive a damn car. It’s sad that her life may be lost, but maybe this is what it takes for folks to start thinking about some of the stupid ish their doing…

  • Laura

What about sharks? I don’t think sharks care what race you are!If anything has happened to her the parants have no one to blame but themselves.Sad but true. What has happened to telling our kids NO!I hope she is found safe, not wanting to try anything like this again.

  • Marlena

I Pray for her safe return. I don’t blame her at all. Her GUARDIANS should not have allowed this. When I was 16, I had to be home before my mother got home from work. So I’m trying to understand why parents would allow this? There needs to be more laws/regulations against parents that allow their children to do things like this.

  • Gimmeabreak78

Wow, this is such a shame. Actually, I am torn on this one. I’m impressed with the drive it takes to sail around the world, climb a mountain, or travel to outer space. All three things are inherently risky, and people die trying to do those things all the time. This young woman certainly has my respect for having this type of drive and ambition, but at 16, it certainly seems unwise to attempt something like this. But that’s what setting records is about–testing the limits of human ability and sanity.

Guess modern technology is not all it’s cracked up to be after all. Being lost at sea is the least of her issues, I am sure she was well aware of all the things that can happen asea, like 50 ft waves and storms that can crack her itty boat to bits. I feel neither joy nor sorrow as she made a conscious decision to go on her great ‘adventure’.

  • liferaft

this would never happen to a black person..….…………………you know because its open water

  • Moreaces

This is a very sad and tragic story, I hope God is with her and she is able to survive whatever ordeal she is going through,, I hope her parents are not blaming themselves, as I am sure they wanted her to follow her dreams..

Hope you dont, or never have kids,, Karma can be a hand full

  • Brady

This girl has a 40ft. sailboat with a keel that weighs as much as a large car. If it capsizes, it is not for long. The survival suit she has can keep her safe until most storms recede. The only fear she needs to worry about is fear itself. Panic in the water can cause rash actions.
I don’t care what kind of record my daughter wanted to challenge, my answer would have been “Not as long as you live in this house.”

  • deschl

I pray for this little girl, and don’t know what to say about her parents, I mean even if there are no rough seas, I would be thinking about the possibility of someone boarding her boat while she is sleep and doing god knows what to her, I think these parents put their dreams on these kids since the brother did it what if we had two kids to do it, I hope and pray she is alright whether she is black or white she is a child of god.

  • Coolness

oh my this girl could be dead from this inncedent i hope shes alive and comes back stronger and the parents go to jail for putting there children at risk like this or call cps on them!!!!

No one has the rite to judge Abbey or her parents. Beyond a doubt, she is brave and extraordinary. She’s an adventurer, and she took to the sea… How many of you critics possess that kind of heroic spirit? You are the ones truly lost.

  • eyesrthesoul

I admire her guts, but as a parent, I just could not cosign the decision to let her attempt this at 16. Her desire to set a world record just wouldn’t mean as much to me as her life. I know life is dangerous, and we risk our lives everyday just getting out of bed in the morning, but this risk seems a bit gratuitous when we’re speaking in terms of a 16 year old child. I hope and pray that she is alright. To me, this seems like a foolish choice, but I hope her parents don’t pay for letting her make it by losing her.

  • chanel

yes shes following her dreams at 16 but this is so dangerous. your sailing around the open sea AROUND THE world ALONE. she could of been kidnapped by “pirates” fell off,got hurt, cought in a storm who knows.

  • WriteLoudly

Not to be heartless but what is it about our society that has to continuously put ourselves and others at risk or perform insane theatrics in an attempt to get attention or our 15 mins of fame.

Why is a 16 year old sailing around the world alone? Seriously, we have pirates now and wars in most waters. But no one thought to intervene putting a little “American” girl in a small boat in the middle on the ocean …… I’m just saying.

  • http://thablackyoutube.com thablackyoutube

Her bravery is to be commended. I hope they find her.

  • seriously?

her parents need to be arrested

Let that soggy cracka drown! One less rich white b!tch to worry about.
Wonder how the parents feel about 16 years of funding down the drain?

  • Go Celtics!!!

    @shark bait
You’re cold, man. But I co-sign. This could have been avoided.

    #### you Shark Bait. You all need to go back to where you came from. Reading newspapers, about all shootings and robberies are commited by blackies. 99@.. What up?

  • Xster

She had a death wish, and it came true. She probably just got shat out by a shark.

  • oh okay

only a White family would lte they damn 16 year old sail across the world alone! i couldnt even go to the pool by myself at 16! smh, IF something happens to her God forbid, i blame the parents. Put your foot down, have some damn discipline! yea she wanna follow her dreams, but at what cost?

  • MissVampireDiaries

She was on 20/20 just last weekend, lol. Stupid parents. Anyone remember Jessica Dubroff? In 1996, she, her father, and a flight instructor were killed in a crash in Cheyenne, Wyo., during her attempt to become the youngest person to fly across the country. She was only SEVEN!!

What’s wrong with white parents? This is what you get with bored privilege white kids: vampires and boat travelers.

  • its the foosa

all in the name of fame.

  • Amirrah

Her 16 year-old AZZ SHOULD BE @ HOME IN HER BED! WHO let’s their CHILD do such FOOLISHNESS? Its a social welfare matter! Endangering a child, recklessness, safety issue, etc!!! WTF? Her parents are straight stupid & crazy & anybody who agrees w/that BS is too!!!! She’s 16!!!!

  • 2dimplzs

It’s hard for me to have sympathy for parents who clearly have no regard for their children’s lives and are willing to risk their children’s lives over some stupid RECORD! It shows you what they value – fame, money, recognition – all the traps of the DEVIL.

I agree with those who say “Only white people would do some ish like this” because it’s TRUE! When is the last time you’ve heard of some black child trying to do some stupid, dangerous ish like this? NEVER!!

I just hope they can live with their conscious if something tragic does happen to one of their kids because of chasing a record. They will definitely have to answer to God just like we all will.
