"American Apparel is racist"

Fu*k American Apparel and their overpriced leggings!!! While their advertising campaigns and hiring policies have been raising eyebrows and red flags for some time now, the latest news has us handing them a “Ho Sit Down!” Pop the hood for details

Gawker just released internal documents from American Apparel detailing their fu*ked up hiring process that includes details about what they are and aren’t looking for. Naturally we were most offended when we read the following recollection from a former American Apparel manager about instructions she received regarding what kind of black girls she should try to hire during the company’s open calls:

“none of the trashy kind that come in, we don’t want that. we’re not trying to sell our clothes to them. try to find some of these classy black girls, with nice hair, you know?”

i will remember that forever, especially the “nice hair” part. he was instructing another manager and i on who to look for during an upcoming open call, and i sat there dumbfounded, listening to him speak while the other manager made “uh huh, got it” sounds on her end of the phone. the other manager on the call with me later became a district manager, and at one point instructed me to tell two of my employees (both of whom happened to be black females) to stop straightening their hair. i refused to do this, but wondered if the mentality behind her request was related to what dov had said.

BTW, if you don’t already know, Dov is Dov Charney — CEO of the company and the perv behind all the nasty skeezy ads that are constantly getting trashed… Oh and clearly Todos Los Colores is not the case!!! We couldn’t even find an American Apparel ad that featured a recognizably African-American model to feature as the photo to run with this post.

It’s about time to boycott these beyatches…

  • LaDiva

    Discrimination sux…
But regardless of color, no-body needs to apply to a job looking like they just woke up.

  • Yuupp

Really? That’s really sad…Trashy comes in all colors! When will the discrimination stop?

  • Gimmeabreak78

The irony of the whole thing is their notion of the word “trashy”. An anorexic model with feet like flippers lying spread-eagle on a bed is the epitome of cla.ss, apparently.

  • smh

well i understand why he wouldn’t want some ghetto broads selling his stuff but um good hair???and news flash white girls can be just as ghetto and trashy
instead of specifically referring to black women he shoulda just said i dont want no trashy WOMEN selling my stuff period

f u c k him and whatever he sales i never even heard of his line and i will never be giving a penny to this clown

  • LYRICS

NEVER LIKE AA AND NEVER FU**IN’ WILL!!!!!!!!!

  • Mizz Lisa

    @ smh I 1000% agree with you……

  • koko clark

Black people are still going to buy their clothes, that’s what we are about, supporting the racist who hate us. Cristal, tommy hilfiger, timbaland(the shoe and producer)

  • b

none of the models are going to be recognizable because they usually hire people who aren’t in the industry and have little modeling experience. the black girl in that pic has natural hair, which i’m sure is what meant by nice hair. it’s still offensive though. i’ve applied at american apparel many times and never gotten a call back and it just so happens i’m a black girl. they take a pic of you in the interview, not even abercrombie does that.

  • LuvN_Life

their clothes aren’t stylish anyways, they are rather blah,it’s a high end Old Navy.way over priced

  • Rainbow Clothes

Maybe they meant “nice hair” as in not Kool-aid colored weaves or something. Why did they want the girls to “stop” straightening their hair?

  • champhf

this is the problem why do we always just want to be accepted by them???

  • YankeeFanGurl860

That’s weird because I went to an American Apparel in Harlem last summer and ended up in a lengthy conversation with the one black female salesperson about her hair (it was naturally wavy). She said she’d never straightened her hair before. So, I guess they really are only checking for black girls with natural hair. SMH…

  • SMDH!!!

if sasha and malia try to apply for a job there they would get turn down because they dont have good hair…SMDH

  • http://peaceloveandfreckles.wordpress.com Jordan

AA is a brand. So they are specifically working their brand. I’ve seen all types in AA of all colors. Sure there aren’t very many dark skinned models in their campaigns but how many dark skinned models can one name?

It’s also interesting that “nice hair” is natural (ie curly/afro textured) black hair. That’s refreshing honestly. Of course all healthy and cared for hair is good hair.

  • Niasia

    I don’t shop there anyhow.

  • http://Bossip.com Eddy

These statements should make blacks open their own apparel stores. What’s wrong with not straightening our hair. Black women would be able to grow their hair longer if they would stop putting chemicals in their hair. They should be proud of their natural hair anyway.

  • ELLA

I don’t think it’s about “good hair” they mean having natural hair. They want more of the afrocentric hippie chic look than the straightened weave look. More Erykah badu and less lil kim. Not saying they’re not discriminating or racist though.

  • zombiegirl

Lol I don’t even wear that crap, i went in the store and immediately turned around lol. this story is bull they just wanna talk about us. I am sure he would not have hired some rosanne looking b*tch. and newsflash ppl all white ppl do not have “good hair” I grew up in the burbs and i know alot of white ppl and see alot of white ppl and most of them do not have good weave quality hair lol and they start to bald like men

  • Yun Dun Know

    What’s American Apparel??????

    Who shops there????

  • DOMINION

So they don’t have a prevalence for freakishly large back-sided n.i.g.g.r.e.s.s.e.s, with either a whole horse’s a.s.s sown onto their heads, or the regular run of the mill nappy headed n.i.g.g.r.e.s.s.e.s.
    Can you really blame them?

  • lilbabiphat2004

this is my 1st time even hearing of this clothing company

  • that damn sh#$ disturber

american apparel?? sounds like a walmart brand.

  • My2cents

    100% co-sign @ fresh prespective!

  • myHusbandMonitorsMyInternetActivity

Black women … stop straightening your hair. They want a more natural look… It looks better than that fake relaxed crap.

  • imjustsayin

    @ DOMINION
b i t c h shut the hell the up with those played out exaggerated stereotypes
    you on some ignorant type s h i t

i can say the same thing with ugly a s s white broads who either got a million piercings and tattoos with gothic make up or the skanky overly tanned white chicks

trash comes in all colors and the only thing people are getting mad about is the fact that he is only referring to black women as if were the only ones they need to be checking

  • http://perryone779@yahoo,com rose by any other name # 9304026339482056536 ™

I wouldnt want to look like no other race but my own .. fu-k a latin, white , asian or any othe rMf-ing race. racist azz bas-ards!!

  • VanGogh

I read somewhere that AA is going broke. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • Ameejo

    I KNOW Y’ALL AIN’T SURPRISED!!!!!!!!!
WAKE UP, THE CLOCK HAS BEEN TURNED BACK!
I’m AA and frankly some of our young “ladies” do not know how to conduct themselves in public.
Maybe, if these mothers would raise their daughter’s with a “little” respect and dignity for themselves “maybe” these folks tongues won’t have room to wag!

  • http://perryone779@yahoo,com rose by any other name # 9304026339482056536 ™

trashy azz white girls rep a lot of trashy!

  • imjustsayin

and as in good hair i highly doubt he means a afro which is the natural hair of most black women he most likely means those mix girls hair with the loser curl

    its a clear difference

i don get what the problem is when it comes to black women straitening their hair as long as it looks clean and kept up it looks good to me

  • Jenene

My friend used to work at AA. Trust, he wanted the girls to stop straightening their hair so he could have an excuse to fire them. They only want a certain type of natural hair. If it’s curly, then fine. Nappy is not.

  • a girl

the above seems to be describing an incident involving specific individuals. it doesn’t describe the hiring practices of the company as a whole. there are racist people that do hiring at all kinds of companies. i don’t shop there or like their clothes, but the way the article is being presented is sensationalism.

  • Somali Ninga

Damn I like American Apparel so this is a shock. But I think they want models with natural hair. It’s more chic.

  • Virginia News

That looks straight out of a Roman Polaski pedofile shoot. That young woman deserves better.

  • Somali Ninga

I remember going to AA a couple a weeks ago and the first time ever I saw a coloured girl working their. She looked mix black/white; lightskin, blond, curly hair. DANG! I’ll still buy their clothes.

  • Eula

I worked at American Apparel for almost a year and left on my own accord when I moved out of my hometown. I returned once to work for Christmas and had no problems because my boss hadn’t officially let me go. When I tried to return this past holiday season my boss was delighted and put me on the schedule but was then asked by corporate to send pictures of me. She picked out the clothes for my pictures and made me remove my earrings saying that a friend of hers wasn’t hired over a heart locket she wore.
She sent the pictures in and I wasn’t hired back. I had all the experience and was needed (so many people had gone home for the holiday).

in terms of looks I’m light with light eyes and natural hair that I more often then not choose to wear straight. I’m 5’9 and a size 6.

  • I’m Not Lying

well if it’s for trashy black girls?, that’s a good 80 percent of them….

  • Asia21

Well I dint see this as being a races comment ….(nice hair) doesn’t have to be a bad comment …. nice hair could be the thickest or the thinnest ….it deoends on how women take care of there selves and some people’s hair looks crazy when they go in for interviews and some people look ghetto…..I don’t see why we are taking this over boared!!!!

  • jj

    @ I’m Not Lying

80% of black girls are ghetto….really?

  • TrutheHurts

    American Apparel is broke.

    http://articles.latimes.com/2010/may/20/business/la-fi-american-apparel-20100520

So I think that is about square!

  • Dia

glad i never bought anything from there

  • Kris

@1987 Gucci has black models. Rihanna is one of them.
@topic – this is weird to me. Usually its the other way around; they want the black girls with over-processed, straight hair. I’m guessing they wanted more of the Afro-centric natural black girls with that certain style. Black girls that wear that type of clothing. They don’t want the Baby Phat wearin, red and blue weave wearin, Jordan sneaker wearin, acrlyic nail havin, loud, ghetto broads. But they definitely went about it the wrong way.

  • Kris

I agree with just about everyone else, they should have just said no trashy people period. white girls can be just as grimmy and ghetto as black girls. Jeeze when will people learn.

  • Lady Shady

    oh wtf?

  • Sindel

Let me get this straight; AA is being CONDEMNED for encouraging black female employees to LEAVE their hair NATURAL???

Black people complain when they get something and complain when they don’t. Complain complain complain, that’s why y’all never progress as a race.

  • Lucifer

Lets be honest you dumb black women will still buy their cloths and brands. You black heffers are louder than cows when you are angry wit black men but when white males insult you that is when you bow down.

  • 4mxperience

Okay cool. fvck American Apparel. They won’t be getting MY money any more.

  • Uhhh Yeahhh Ok.

I find AA to be for that artsy, weird, quirky, dirty ballet slipper wearing, curly hair having, big black frame wearing, party hardy, coke sniffing, a million different color scarves having, street bum/hobo chic kind of girl..

    Basically Solange..

  • LOL(LAUP)

    Uhhh Yeahhh Ok.

  • jj

    @ lucifer

have you not read the comments IDIOT who is bowing down??

  • Scruff

You can hire whoever you want. i wouldn’t want no shitty attitude hood rat working me either.

  • LameGirl

You all know what type of hair they talking about!!!

The black girls with the loosely curly natural hair,or naturally straight hair, who are usually, but not always, lighter skin, sometimes w/lighter eyes.
The ones who claim black or mixed on the application and managers(regardless of color)choose them because they are the “good” black and look less threatening, plus it satisfies their affirmative action/diversity system.

People Wake Up and stop pretending like yall don’t see this…

  • Xtal

Have you even been to their website? They have several beautiful AA models. For anyone who knows anything about American Apparel, they cater to the hipster crowd. Of course they are going to have boundaries on the look of the people they hire. Sheesh.

  • maymay

I don’t understand people when they say oh they want the light girl with the light hair and eyes with loose curly hair because im light and i bet i have the kinkiest hair than most dark skinned women and i love it i wear my hair natural it’s really kinky. Black people always look at me like omg she is wearing her hair natural and i don’t give a doo doo i love it plus straight doesn’t suit me but i feel as long as a black woman loves who she is underneath the weave and without the realaxer then by all means do what you want weave it straighten it but if you don’t you need to sort out the self-hatred first that’s just my opinion. btw all black women whether your light or dark are beautiful that’s what beautiful about us we come in different shades no other race has that.

  • what!?!

Please…. Don’t n.obody want that ugly a** cheap looking sh*t anyway. Why are we mad they don’t want us to advertise tshirts.. Really!?!

  • http://www.bossip.com Pamela Martha Focker

Who’s the dumb broad that asked “are they gonna fire white girls with dyed blond hair?” You are dumb with a capital D.Blond hair is ONLY meant for white girls and it only looks good on THEM…natural or dyed. What A.A don’t want to see is black girls with ghetto blond weaves because its not natural for the black race.Get it?

  • Sha

LOL I’m good, not missing anything there.

I looked at some of the ads maybe they are using reverse psychology. :D

  • KENNEDY

AA is referring to mixed texture hair NOT India Arie or Erykah Badu

  • lipz

I seen one blk chick working at an AA and she was that natural hippie “white washed” type of chick….but they know black girls will kill for their leggings/tights etc….

  • ATL chick

the American Apparels in the Atlanta area have plenty of black (and not the kind with fair skin and curly hair) employees and the same goes for the models online…but myself being a black female, i mean, if you’re working in retail do you want “hood rats” or black people who enunciate working at our store? and btw they don’t care for trashy looking white women either in there lol

  • Smittyt

Damn that broad in that photo has some big azz feet.

  • American Azzholes

    stop blocking my comments

  • American Azzholes

A bunch of r.a.c.i.s.t.s…applied several times online when I was in college…had retail experience but never made it p.a.s.s.e.d. the first stage because of my “look.” They didn’t want a brown girl, bottom line.

  • Nola bound

Lol, I don’t wear that overpriced bland crap anyways, that goes for aeropostale, hollister, abercrombie, etc. If I want that look honestly I’ll buy it at walmart, cause that’s WTF it looks like. Only ppl I know wear that c r a p, is gay guys.

  • Princess Becky…Black women quit trying to look like me

“Sisters” I know u all are tired of breaking combs, but how about u all start embracing the way God made u. God gave u cooch hair & he gave us silk hair. Ha,ha,ha! Like my signiture says.

  • MochaDreams

    Who buys this shyt anyway???

  • Proud

I agree . We do need to stop calling young ladies ghetto or hoodrats. The way I see. If you have any african american features or characteristics….its immediately ghetto. Automatically there is a negative spin on it. For example, I don’t have acrylic nails, don’t care for them, but if there is a girl who wants to do something different with her nails to express herself, I am not going to automatically say oh she ghetto. Not all updos are ghetto and just because you loud doesn’t mean they are ghetto. My family is loud and it because when we get together we laugh and have a good time. That doesn’t mean we are ignorant and ghetto.

  • Courtney

They will never get any of my money no more.

  • Lucas McKenzie

    @Proud,

I don’t think everyone automatically lumps people into that category simply for wearing nails or being loud…

Ghetto, hoodrattish behavior is very distinct, you know what it is. It’s the way they carry themselves, it’s the total lack of vocabulary and grammar skills, it’s the 3 and 4 and 5 kids trailing behind, it’s the ‘pookies’ and ‘nay nays,’ it’s the “bust-it-baby” stance we like to do in pictures, and the list goes on.

I think if nothing else, this post has forced us to start taking a hard look at ourselves. We want so bad to be left alone to be ourselves, but we are making fools of ourselves. People no longer take us seriously because of how we choose to represent ourselves, and you know this is true.

  • Annelli

Sometimes I wonder if the celebs that endorse certain products are aware of the company hiring pratices as it relates to minorities. I worked for the vacuum maker DYSON and I seen an ad in Oprah’s monthly magazine and I can tell you right now that they do not treat the call center reps with respect, in fact, the field manager could be overheard citing that she didn’t care about the people in the call center (most of the call center reps are black). Most of these companies don’t care–they only want your money..that’s about it.

  • Educated Goon

Black Women do not realize. White people view your permed hair as ghetto & disgusting. Ever notice when you see black women on TV commercials (who are not mixed) they usually have natural hair.

White Folks dont like fakeness & nor do black men.. which is why we gettin latinas & white girls

  • mzgoodi

wack clothing line anyway… goon your excuse makes no sense, white girls and latinas do fake sh*t too with their hairs, dont be fooled, but nice excuse just admit u just want a white or latina girl thats all…

  • mzgoodi

and that picture is disgusting, do u see that skinny butt hiding down there? lmao.

  • elle

PS… I am white, and posted this comment on another blog.

CHARNEY ISN’T INTO BLONDS EITHER… HE’S INTO LATINOS/MIXED-RACE PEOPLE, GET IT?

Not blacks, not whites. Latinos- the future of america.

  • spflygirl

They don’t get any of my money. I pay less than half price for it from the boosters! Lol
