BET Network

The Black Entertainment Television network, AKA BET, is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary — but has the network helped Blacks move forward or has it only succeeded in moving the community backward??? More when you

CNN ran an interesting story on BET today making an argument that the network is evolving, with the acquisition of shows like “The Game” and their new channel Centric as examples. Check out some excerpts below:

“We spent over a year really thinking about the values of the company and what our audience wanted from us,” said Debra Lee, chief executive officer of BET. “We came up with a new strategy where we have put in the forefront the need to respect, reflect and elevate our community and for the past year and a half that’s given us a road map of where we want to go…”

The acquisition of BET by Viacom in 2000 as part of a $3 billion deal brought an infusion of funding, which helped the network play catch-up, Washington Post pop culture reporter Paul Farhi said. The past few years have seen the successful addition of original programming including reality shows like “Tiny and Toya.”

CEO Lee points to such successes as proof that BET is on a path to retaining the positives of its heritage — giving a black audience programming they want — and maintaining relevancy in an age where so much talk about the country being in a “post-racial era” leaves things far from black and white.

“No other network is producing new kinds of product for our community and I’m not really sure it’s true that we are in a post-racial environment,” Lee said. “When you look at the networks you don’t see lead characters that are black, and you don’t have any entirely black casts, so I think we have taken a few steps back in terms of Hollywood.”

Lee pointed to two new scripted comedies coming in the fall and the network’s now global reach as just some of the inroads the network is making to broaden itself.

“The worst thing in the world would be for us to grow comfortable where we are, become stagnant and not grow,” Lee said. “There are new generations of BET viewers who want different things and in the TV business you have to keep changing.”

And for BET, many argue change is LONG overdue:

BET co-founder Sheila Johnson recently told The Daily Beast that she is ashamed of the network she and ex-husband Bob Johnson started. She slammed BET for, in her opinion, promoting promiscuous, irresponsible sexual behavior.

“I just really wish — and not just BET but a lot of television programming — that they would stop lowering the bar so far just so they can get eyeballs to the screen,” she said.

In the late 1990s, cartoonist Aaron McGruder used his strip to criticize BET’s imagery of African-Americans. The spat led to Bob Johnson taking out an ad admonishing McGruder for his lack of respect of him and his pioneering network. Two years ago, a coalition calling itself Enough is Enough protested the BET Honors awards ceremony for what it said was programming that demeaned women and glorified criminal activity.

Still it’s true that the network has grown over the years, and the network is taking steps to show that growth in new ways:

BET’s primary channel reaches more than 90 million households and can be seen in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and sub-Saharan Africa. That means fans in the Middle East can tune into the “Wendy Williams Show” and viewers can catch “The Mo’Nique Show” in Dubai.

“The channel is a general entertainment channel to its core that has a lot of different viewpoints of black culture, many of which we feel haven’t been seen outside of the United States,” said Michael Armstrong, senior vice president and general manager of BET International. “Black culture has done a very good job of expanding internationally through music, but there are a lot of stories that haven’t been told.”

Mickey O’Connor, senior editor for TVGuide.com, said BET is poised to grow its audience the way other networks have.

“For me I think the future of television is cable. I think the future of cable television is the niche network, the niche programming,” he said. “If you look, you see these networks like Bravo, USA and even AMC lately and you see that they are focused on a small segmented audience and it attracts really high-end advertisers. And I think that’s what BET is starting to do, particularly with the launch of Centric.”

O’Connor said BET has also shown that it has clout, as evidenced by its ability to resurrect “The Game,” a CW sitcom that had been canceled. BET noted that the show had a cult following and deftly managed to bring it back, announcing recently that new episodes will be produced for the fall.

“That was a complicated deal, which they had to put together from going to the production to making sure the actors were back on board, and they did it,” O’Connor said. “I think that’s a really strong sign of their health.”

What do you think??? Is BET doing enough to change? Is “The Tiny and Toya Show” really that shining example of positivity they’re trying to make it out to be? How about “The Game”? Does resurrecting a canceled CW favorite redeem BET from years of degradation and misogyny???

BET is garbage. If it’s suppose to be Black entertainment TV why do they only show rap, hip-hop, and R&B. They don’t show any Black artists who do rock and roll, techno, punk, and other genres of music.

Why don’t they show any African music, Black british artist, more Caribbean music, Afro-Latino musicians? There is a growing market for African music.

They should also show more documentaries, better sitcoms and get rid of Terrance and Rocsi.

  • Hotmomma

I don’t hink BET has evolved for our community at all. If I’m not mistaken it’s probably because it is not black owned. I believe it is owned by the same people who own MTV and they know nothing about our community except how to make money off it.

BET is so commercialized it has lost it’s effect and support from the “real” black people.

    HOw did they evolve again???!!!

  • What_am_iDoing

i meant down the drain. lol..i guess “THE DREAM”s wack music helped that

  • Tiedra

BET has not evolved, it has digressed. Its a negative environment full of violence and sexually enticing music that degrades the female gender. They glorify pictures such as Scarface, Menace to Society, and Boyz and the Hood repeatedly. This is not positive, it is a steady progression of negative stereotypes that are laced with venom for our race as well as our culture.

People are always voicing complaints of how we are unfairly targeted and labeled due to our race. This network does not aid us it hinders us. This form of entertainment is poisonous to our youth.

BET should cease thinking of their generated income and look at the youths who are fascinated by the violence depicted on their network. These programs are influential and should take some responsibility for what they are airing on their channel.

  • Be Original

For the more part BET hasn’t evolved, but I will say that the show “My Black Is Beautiful” is a move in the right direction.

  • Tiedra

BET’s weekly depiction of American Gangster was one of the worst era’s of BET. There was no solution to crime plaguing the community. It was just a careless, senseless viewing of a criminal and his destructive path. A life of crime is enticing to a young child who is in poverty and in need of direction. BET should take some responsibility for what they are televising.

BET is not owned by black folks. All you have to know is that BET puts it’s viewers to sleep with hip hop and wakes them up with Gospel. White people want black people to act like hos and thugs or be in church worshipping white people. In between act like a clown.

  • Tiedra

How many times are they going to show Belly, New Jack City, Boyz in the Hood, Menace to Society, and any other predicate felon that they can depict to our youth. BET is a sell out channel.

I do enjoy Sunday Best, and some of the other reality shows that they televised.

  • Be Original

And for some odd reason BET is airing Scarface again…This is an absolute disgrace.

Well I think we need to have more postive shows or programs on BET. For example programs showing how to start your own business or how to get grants to better yourself etc. Black people networth is more than singing and dancing we been doing that since the 1940′s lets spread out and do more for ourselves.

  • MZLADYLUV

I AGREE WITH SHEILA JOHNSON….I REMEMBER WHEN BET FIRST GOT STARTED..IT WAS A BLACK ON PROGRAM THAT GEARED MORE TOWARD THE ACOMPLISHMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS AND BACK THEN THEIR WERE A LOT OF SUCESS STORIES…BUT NOW ALL YOU SEE IS SOMEONE SHAKEING THE BOTTOMS AND A FOOL WITH A BUNCH OF GOLD IN HIS MOUTH AND RAPPING AND DISRESPECTING OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN SISTERS…SO IF THAT IS…THE ONLY THING THAT IS MOVING FORWARD ON BET IS THE SADNESS OF OUR COMMUNITY…

  • nywoman23…killuminati

BET has deteriorated into buffoonery tv and it perpetuates negative stereotypes of black ppl. such squandering of a wonderful opportunity!(SMH!) lets hope they heed their critics and get real responsible programming that will edify black culture! Lets have a network we are proud of that educates and inspires the viewing audience. There is money in doing that also

  • misssexytexas

Wow! So many negative veiws on BET.I’m an eightys baby and grew up on BET. I will say this the station could use some improvements but instead of bad talking the station on a damn blog why not write BET with ideas that u think would make the station for us as viewers. I say let’s perserve one of the very few outlets that we have as black people.

Plain and simple …. The negative effect BET has had on the black community in the last 30 years has been more detrimental to the spread of ignorance than any other media outlet on this planet !!!!…. Thank you Bob Johnson for perpetuating Us people of color as Gangsters Pimps and Hoes … !!!!!

  • soulwoman

Well, it goes to show how much BET has evolved when they have the nerve to use Tiny and Toya as an example. SMH.

  • For real though?

BET is a Viacom owned station just like most of the stations on cable. BET needs to ask why their budget is sooo much less than MTV’s. Just look at College Hill compared to The Real World. The house on The Real World always looks more expensive. Overall, I just loathe BET. Point Blank.

  • tee tee

    BET…negative station..we need positive..

  • http://deleted CriticXtreme

BET is still the White-est network on TV. No change, just change pontifications. And that Bob White should be ashame of himself. He’s the whitest blackman on the planet. Why can’t nigs just run a network that would actually uplift the people that depend on it? I’m going to create the F*CK U Network. Then lets see what happens.

  • SHEENA

@ NE Ne I would rater BET be off the air then to have hoodrats on like Tiny and Toya which BET trys to portray black women as. BET thinks that all black women are like this when this is far from the truth. BET needs to be shut down and excuse me but none of the women on BET represent me. Tiny and Toya dont know proper grammer so how the hell do they represent me? I admit BET is not the only network pushing this negtivity but because its suppose to be a network for African Americans I expected more from them

  • Kenyan

What has become symbolic of the popular lack of interest in today’s youth is that my aforementioned comment will probably go unread because of its length.

  • LadyJNewYork

No, BET has not “evolved”, about 10 years ago I was speaking with a girlfriend and we discussed this very thing, I told her I’d cancel BET from my cable package if I could. She got angry and was upset that I said that, now she’s like “girl, you called it along time ago.” LOL BET is weak, TV1 is better much better programming.

  • Sick and Tired

BET is successful for putting Black Faces on Television 24/7. However it fails to provide a positive image of Black people on a regular basis. I agree with Miss Dominican Republic, BET only plays Rap, Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel (only on SUNDAYS!). The majority of music played on BET is about SEX, DRUGS, AND VIOLENCE. The reality shows on BET portray the lives of wealthy musicians who are: having babies out of wedlock, spending money irresponsibly, and exhibiting poor parenting skills. And don’t forget about COLLEGE HILL, the reality show about college life for a household of young students. The primary focus of this show was to shine light on the negative behaviors students exhibit in college. So is BET successful in promoting positive images of the Black Community, NO!!
