Vibe issues a statement on Robin Thicke’s claim that he didn’t get the cover because he was white:

“We have a great deal of respect for Robin Thicke and his music, and we remain flattered by his desire to be on a VIBE cover. A VIBE cover is a huge milestone in any artist’s career—recent cover stars include Young Jeezy, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Usher, Senator Barack Obama, Eminem, Lil Wayne, and Robert De Niro, to say nothing of our 15-year history. We wish Thicke the best, and we’re glad he discusses his thoughts on race and R&B in the new October 2008 issue of VIBE.”

Translation: Robin get to Mariah Carey and Barack Obama’s status and maybe you’ll get some play.  SMH.

I don’t care that they won’t put him on there b/c he’s white, they have that right. I’ve never seen a black man on a country music mag, and we sing county too.

  • NO ONE ON THE CORNER HAS SWAGGER LIKE US(sxyQblondie)

VIBE IS WEAK, WATERED DOWN, AND NOTHING LIKE WHAT THEY USED TO BE. THE 20 QUESTIONS USED TO BE SOMETHING THAT I LOOKED FOWARD TO READING FOR GOOD LAUGHS AND SIMILARITIES. NOW IT SUCKS MAJOR BOOTAY. JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE MAGAZINE. SO WHO CARES WHAT THEY SAY. I HOPE THE EDITOR OF VIBE READS THIS SO THEY CAN STEP THEIR GAME UP. I WOULDNT BUY A VIBE NOW-A DAYS FOR 50 CENT.

  • Lush-Us Lipps

This may very well be true… but nevertheless we still love him anyway.

  • kevwebb (I GOT NOW, I DON’T CARE WHO GOT NEXT)

Yeah…Robin’s a good artist, but nothing he has went Platinum. None of his personal albums have went platinum. Someone can correct me.

    @ Z: What’s Poppin Ma?

  • http://Yahoo intuitivepisces

I love Robin Thicke; however, I think VIBE has every right to remain exclusive regarding this issue. Keep up the good work Robin!

  • NO ONE ON THE CORNER HAS SWAGGER LIKE US(sxyQblondie)

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN VIBE DIDNT HAVE ANY CHOICE BUT TO PUT THE “UP AND COMING ARTIST” ON THEIR COVER. SO WHAT, NOW THAT THEY’VE BEEN IN THE GAME FOR OVER A DECADE, THEIR TOO GOOD TO DO IT? SOME OF THE TRASH THEY PUT ON THEIR MAG MONTH TO MONTH, ARENT EVEN WORTH BUYING AN ALBUM FROM. ROBIN THICKE IS A TALENTED MAN. REGARDLESS OF WHAT COLOR HE IS.

  • mydixiewrecked

Vibe is wack and so is Danyel Smith. Its the Ecko of urban magazines… WHITE-washed and watered down.

  • MIke

Vibe did not dispute what Robin said. If it was not true Vibe would have said it was not true.

  • NO ONE ON THE CORNER HAS SWAGGER LIKE US(sxyQblondie)

    @TANISHA

HELLLOOOO!! THANK YOU!! NOT ONLY ARE THE ADVERTISEMENTS OF SOMETHINGS YOU CANT AFFORD, BUT OF ALOT OF CRAP YOU WOULDNT BUY EVEN IF IT WENT ON CLEARANCE. THE’ F*&K OUTTA HERE!!(LOL) VIBE IS SOME GARBAGE. LIKE I SAID THE OTHER DAY, I DIDNT EVEN BLINK WHEN THEY STOPPED MY “FREE” SUBSCRIPTION. I LAUGHED, THANKING THEM INTERNALLY FOR DOING SO. CAUSE THEY ARE WACK AS HELL. THE INTERVIEW SET UP IS POOR. IT’S JUST GARBAGE.

  • Ms. Philadelphia

it is what it is Robin…just because you have a song out with LIl Wayne don’t automatically make u high profile status…sit down and be patient, in due season little one….in due season

  • Miss Theo

I seriously doubt that being on the cover of Vibe is a huge “milestone” in Barack Obama or Robert De Niro’s career…. Vibe is reaching there.

  • Ms. Philadelphia

Wait a friggin minute! Why in the world was Robert DeNiro on the cover??? SMH….

  • Hardly Working

They did not dispute what he said. Whatever he does in his personal life is not up for debate. Who cares if he does coke (which I don’t believe). It is obvious Vibe was in the wrong or they would have called him a liar. That was a sugar coated statement. If someone lied on my brand, I would blast them out without question like Fox did to Solange. Vibe did not. That is my clear answer right there. Another thing, these mags are to help promote new artists not just celebrate those who have already made it. We need the Robin Thicke’s, Keri Hilson’s, Bilal’s, Rashaan Patterson’s, Estelle’s, etc. to get their shine on as well.

  • Ms. Philadelphia

I seriously doubt that being on the cover of Vibe is a huge “milestone” in Barack Obama or Robert De Niro’s career…. Vibe is reaching there.

LOL!! So true! They probably didn’t even know it! Like Robert DeNiro or Barack Obama woul dhave a Cover party or something for VIBE! SMH

  • And…

    One question…

    And if they did?

While he’s at it I bet a lot of good things happened to him too – because he’s White.

They should have just replied with:

“No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service.”

  • http://anonymous@yahoo.com anonymous

THEY ARE LIARS!!! not once did they deny the claim that they said that they didn’t want him on the cover because he was white..they can put r.kelly’s molesting ass on the cover even after the tape was released..thats why I don’t buy or read that magazine

  • And…

I’m so glad nobody has to like me or put me on the cover of the newsletter at work in order for me to get paid….

  • DC DIVA

Nobody even reads VIBE anymore. lol I like Source better 4real, Really when’s the last time any of you brought an issue? lol They dont have much to talk about anymore. All i kno is be crankin to “MAGIC” like the rest of yall, and i kno damn well yall was singin “Lost Without You”. If your a real music fan then u would kno that his last cd was actually really good. He’s the underdog but thats a good thing in his case. That comment was for the young lady who said just cause he came out with the one song with Lil Wayne. Check his resume babes, he was an artist way before he did a song with lil wayne

  • jenndub

I agree with you bird. it was a dumb statement.

  • Lady Shady

Alright Robin, quit playing the race card, you’re white! and your father was always rich, what the hell else you want. You’re cute, but just cuz your wife is a black woman, don’t make you usher.

  • nikki

his last album DID in fact reach platinum status

  • biracial bombshell

That was a nice cover up, Vibe….it’s okay Robin baby…you’ll be bigger than Vibe before you know it…who needs em?

  • azdelish

who cares…… they have a right to put whomever they choose on their magazine.

I think he is a terrible performer (live) I saw one of his performances and did not care for it.

    ——————————————-

Maybe it’s just me, but this sounds a lot more like ” VIBE ” is not only trying to convince everyone else of it’s relevance by overstating it’s appeal, but is also trying to sell more magazines by making the statement he’s supposed to have made even more of an issue.

Which is ” EXTREMELY IRONIC “.

Here it is, ” Someone ” releases the statement he supposedly made (I’m not going to say ” made ” unless I hear it out of his own mouth). Knowing that would get attention. Now you have ” VIBE ” putting out a statement focusing on the fact that he’s discussing the very same issue in their October issue. Hmmmmm !

  • ambitiouschick23

    lmao!!! this is crazy…

I love Robin Thicke…but marrying a black women and singing R&B doesnt make you black. Sorry boo

  • jcc

Well, his comment can not be true because Eminem and Robert De Niro are both “WHITE”.

50cent & Robert Dinero was on the cover a few months ago…

    Robert D is white…so I’m confused.

    :(

    “Oprah filed bankrupcy”

    “Obama got a 3rd nipple”

    “Robert DiNero is Puerto Rican”

  • ??????????????????????

    @ jcc

Well, his comment can not be true because Eminem and Robert De Niro are both “WHITE”.

    —————————————-

That’s another interesting point. If he’s so into VIBE magazine that he wishes he could have been on the cover you would think he already knew that.

So I’m not so willing to believe he actually made the comment, unless I here it coming from his mouth directly.

“Robert DeNiro is Puerto Rican”, LMAO !

  • cutie pie*kindly putting people on blast est.1985* I got good hair…I got African in my family

I retract my earlier comment cause’ come to think of it Robin might just be trippin’ plus lets not forget Robin snorts cocaine he probably was high when he did this interview.

  • cutie pie*kindly putting people on blast est.1985* I got good hair…I got African in my family

if robert deniro is puerto rican then bush is chinese

  • Oshie

Say, that was a joke. De Niro is white and so is Eminem. Now that we’ve cleared that up, did you know that John McCain is Pakistani?

  • What for?

SO VIBE is trying to say that they havent had a new, up and coming , platimum artist in their 15 year history. EVERY PERSON THEY HAVE HAD ON THE COVER HAS BEEN A PHENON. OH PULEEEZZ.

Like someone said its nothing but advertisements anyway I havent bought a VIBE since, since, since, since….zzzz

  • WordtotheWise

Now the last time I checked, Eminem and Robert D. are both white, so why should they have to deny the claim? It’s obvious they’ve had white people on their cover. That’s kinda self-explanatory, isn’t it?

I don’t know where someone got that Robert D. is Puero Rican, but this is what IMDB says: “Although he is commonly referred to as an Italian-American actor, De Niro is actually one-quarter Italian in ancestry. His father was half-Irish and half- Italian. His mother was of French, Dutch and German ancestry. He was, however, quite close to his Italian paternal grandfather, whom Robert visited frequently in Syracuse, NY when he was young. De Niro has stated that he identifies “more with [his] Italian side”.

  • Aziajs

    Vibe is full of it.

  • WordtotheWise

Sorry, I posted b/f I read the other comments. Sorry for the duplicate info.

  • Oshie

@ jaybird: you obviously missed my humor there. The fact that you took the time to look it up says heaps about your dedication to classifying people via internet search engines. I hope your career as an internet database racial classifications officer takes off soon.

    Bob Barker is Nepalese.

  • tay

    woah that was cold

  • realwoman

Yah okay Robin Thicke is not all that in my eyes and no I do not want to see him on the cover of Vibe or any other ‘urban’ publication right now. He is starting to smell like a Justin Timberlake (using the Black community to make a name for himself)….

  • Ya Boy KJ

And thanks for stating the obvious btw…

  • serene

Robin whether black, whyte pink or blue, is real artist. I can’t say that about 90% of the so called artist out.

I notice they didn’t deny it, so if i ever read any thing about race coming from them, it won’t mean a thing. And vibe……who reads that. Robin don’t bother with that, i don’t read it when it see it sitting aroudn the hair salon for free.

And his last album did go platinum. Being real artist gets u no cover, and no radio play these days. But its all good, cuz we luv robin.

And robin is not justin timberfake. Black folks got fooled into buyin into his ish. i saw rite through way before the janet thing. I don’t get that from robin. I don’t see hiim putti on a front, and i don’t seeing him trying to only sell records.

Noone read Vibe anywayz. They use to send me issues, and then bill me for it, when i did not request it, i let them know about it reallll quiik….lol

  • Lady Shady

    @ departed…why you dissin Mariah?

  • Mrs. Rodriguez

I have to agree with the other posts. Vibe is whack! Have not read it in years. I remember a time when magazines had stories with depth and substance.

  • Redd Tony aka Earth Sign {Its time for a Revolution)

Vibe started to get wack when the mag got smaller. I like the big style mag better, it sorta stood out.

    @kevwebb:

Here’s your correction!! “The Evolution of Robin Thicke” went CERTIFIED PLATINUM in April 2007!

    You now stand corrected!!

  • Norm

    bottom line is:

    No one reads vibe.

He made comment just in time as his article hits.

    Its a publicity stunt

    He will get cover soon

why would he risk pissing them off and not even getting the article in first place, and why would thy not deny saying it. for that matter, why would they every say some racist stuff like that in the first place? it’s all about starting talk which hopefully translates into sales.

Which aint gonna work because of the first premice:

    noone reads Vibe. it’s irrelavent.

Rebert DeNiro –De Niro’s father was of Italian and Irish descent, and his mother was a Presbyterian-raised atheist of English and German descent. His Italian great-grandparents, Giovanni De Niro and Angelina Mercurio, emigrated from Ferrazzano, in the province of Campobasso, Molise and his paternal grandmother, Helen O’Reilly, was the daughter of Edward O’Reilly, an emigrant from Ireland.

Robert DeNiro has a black wife—Grace Hightower (second wife). His first wife was–Diahnne Abbott and he had a long-term relationship with Toukie Smith (remember her from the tv show 227?)

    Robert DeNiro loves BLACK women!!!

  • jcc

I like Vibe’s response- very professional.

May I also say that Robin Thicke’s wife is of a beautiful cinnamon-yellow complexion. My OH my.

  • Darkesthourglass

Vibe is boring. They were mailing me issues when they stopped making Vibe Vixen. I’d read the 20 questions then toss it to the side or chunk it. That mess is as watered down as a McDonald’s Coke. Robin Thicke should wanna be on a magazine that people might buy like People, Blender or at least Complex. Getting on the cover of Vibe ain’t saying much.

  • Child Please

Maybe they’ve seen Robin in concert and realized that he is extremely boring, no stage presence and can’t sing a lick.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing him perform before Jill Scott came and tore it up. After seeing him in concert, I never played his CD and will never want to see him in concert again.

  • Kim

    Pretty much….

  • T-Money

Props to Vibe for keeping it classy with their response.

That’s the answer they SHOULD have given Robin when he originally asked to be on the cover. Did you notice how Vibe’s statement didn’t dispute Robin’s claim?

  • Encyclopedia Brown

    @lala

The truth hurts and that’s exactly what I stated.

  • daughtercreole

Robin Thicke needs to recognize that having a black wife or half black wife and singing R&B doesn’t make him black soo Robin needs to stop thinking he’s on some platinum status

some of those people vibe just said yeah they deserve the cover but what the hell has young jeezy done. Vibe gettin outta pocket. who the hell wanna be on they stank covr anyway!!

  • melissa

some of the racial comments on here are ridiculous. But they are more in support of them being together and negative about black men. It seems to me that interracial relationships between black women and white men are more accepted than vice versa, because people say those relationships are based more on love. black men and white women fall in love aswell. I like robin thicke and think him and his wife make a cute couple. I don’t know for certain if vibe are being prejudice.

  • mizmil

This is interesting—VIBE did NOT deny the issue of race….I feel that it is sad how Blacks embrace everything white women do but NOT white men. Robin has every right to be on VIBE as it [vibe] is NOT a big deal anyway!
